The Loyal Steed
The Loud Crowd spread out through Freezington and ask people about Calyrex; unfortunately, pretty much everyone mainly believed him to be a simple fairy tale legend.
"Well, that stinks." said Lola.
"No one really believes Calyrex is real." said Sam.
"What do we do?" asked Clyde.
"We should go tell Calyrex." said Lincoln. "After that, we'll try figuring out what we can do for him."
"Let's go." said Ronnie Anne.
The Loud Crowd head back to the clearing where Calyrex was and tell him what they learned.
"Ah, human children; I trust you were able to speak to the villagers." Calyrex says to the group.
"We did." said Lincoln.
"So, how was it? Did they say anything about me?" asked Calyrex.
"Sorry to say this, but they think you're just a fairy tale." said Lana.
"Hmm... It is as I suspected." said Calyrex. "Nobody truly believes that I am real."
"We're sorry we couldn't give you good news." said Ronnie Anne.
"It seems the people of this land have indeed forgotten the bond they once shared with me." said Calyrex.
"Sorry." said Lucy from behind Calyrex, frightening him.
"How did you do that?" asked Calyrex.
"We don't know." said Lola.
"Anyway, I wasn't grieving! I am the King of Bountiful Harvests after all!" said Calyrex. "I know better than to count on humans to remember me."
"Is there anything else we can do to help you?" asked Lincoln.
"If only my loyal steed were to return to me, I would regain something of what I've lost." said Calyrex.
"Loyal steed?" Lola replied.
"Yes! The four-legged Pokemon that I used to ride all across the land." replied Calyrex. "The very same Pokemon that my statue in the village shows me riding." The Loud Crowd thinks back and recalls the statue of Calyrex riding a horselike Pokemon. "Alas, though in ancient times we spent many days together, dashing through the valleys and over the mountains of the land."
"Cool!" said Lana.
"Unfortunately, my power waned, and I was forced to part ways with it." said Calyrex. "Now, I know not where it may be."
"Do you know where it might be?" asked Lincoln.
"Even if we should succeed in locating my loyal steed, I have my doubts as to whether it had remained, well, loyal." said Calyrex. "I have lost so much power; perhaps the villagers know something about my currently not so loyal steed."
"We can try asking them." said Clyde.
"I would be in your debt if you could speak to the head of the village on my behalf." said Calyrex. "If you are able to find any information at all, I ask that you let me know."
"We will." said Lincoln. He turned towards the rest of the Loud Crowd. "Come on; let's go talk to the mayor." Everyone else nods and begin running towards the village. They arrived at where they usually see the mayor to see he wasn't there.
"Where do you think the mayor is?" asked Leni.
"Are you kids looking for the mayor?" asked an eldery woman nearby.
"Yeah; do you know where he is?" asked Lincoln.
"He went to have a look at the fields in the Giant's Bed." replied the elderly woman.
"Where's that?" asked Clyde.
"If you head south of Freezington, you'll reach a spot called Frostpoint Field; once you get past that, you'll be in the Giant's Bed." said the woman.
"Thank you." said Sam.
"You're quite welcome." said the woman.
"Let's go, everyone." said Lincoln.
"Yeah!" said the rest of the Loud Crowd.
The group begins to make its way through the cold area called Frostpoint Field.
"Wow, it's cold here." said Sam.
"I'll bet Linky wishes that Marnie or Gloria were here; they could huddle together for warmth." said Lola with a grin, making Lincoln blush, and Ronnie Anne frown.
"Let's just keep going." said Lincoln, hoping to change the subject.
Everyone soon enter an area that wasn't as cold as the other places in the Crown Tundra they've been to.
"Not so bad in this area." said Luna.
"We'll keep our winter gear on; just in case." said Clyde. "The weather can be unpredictable in the Galar Region."
"Good call." said Lucy from behind Clyde, startling him.
"Hey, look at those." said Sam as she points toward a couple of quadrupedal Pokemon; one was purple with a long horn coming out of its forehead, while the other one was a light blue one with a smaller horn, and small whiskers coming out of the sides of its face.
"What are they?" asked Luna as she points her Rotom Phone at the purple Pokemon.
"Nidoran, the Poison Pin Pokemon. Small but brave, this Pokémon will hold its ground and even risk its life in battle to protect the female it's friendly with." said Luna's Rotom Phone.
"That is so romantic how it's willing to do anything to protect the one it loves." said Sam.
"This says that's a male Nidoran." said Luna.
"I'll see what my Rotom Phone says about the blue one." said Sam as she points her Rotom Phone at the light blue Pokemon.
"Nidoran, the Poison Pin Pokemon. It uses its hard incisor teeth to crush and eat berries. The tip of a female Nidoran's horn is a bit more rounded than the tip of a male's horn." said Sam's Rotom Phone.
"Oh, look at that." said Leni; everyone looks to see the two Nidoran nuzzling each other.
"That's adorable." said Lola.
"With their colors, they remind me of us, Sam." said Luna, making Sam and herself blush. The two Nidoran turn towards the group and get into defensive positions.
"What's with them?" asked Lana.
"Maybe we're intruding on their alone time?" suggested Lincoln.
"Well, Lori's kind of the same way when we do that with her and Bobby." said Leni.
"Watch out!" said Lincoln, making everyone look to see the male Nidoran charging towards them; everyone leaps out of his path.
"What do we do?" asked Lola.
"Let's catch them, Sam." said Luna.
"Okay." said Sam. "I'll get the female Nidoran."
"I got the other one." said Luna. Sam tosses her pokeball, releasing her Steelix.
"Steelix, use Rock Slide!" said Sam. Her Steelix summons up a bunch of rocks and drops them onto the female Nidoran, dealing damage; the female Nidoran responds by leaping at Steelix and landing two strong kicks to her head, dealing super effective damage.
"That was Double Kick!" said Clyde.
"Steelix, use Dragon Breath!" said Sam. Her Steelix releases a stream of green energy from her mouth that hits the female Nidoran, dealing damage; it starts to twitch.
"Looks like she's paralyzed." said Ronnie Anne. The female Nidoran breaks through her paralysis and stomps down hard on the ground, causing the earth beneath Steelix to explode, dealing super effective damage.
"Wow, the Pokemon here in Crown Tundra really are tough." said Lana.
"Steelix, use Tackle!" said Sam. Her Steelix charges at the female Nidoran and rams her, sending her flying into a rock where it slides to the ground.
With Luna and the male Nidoran, the musical Loud had her Toxtricity out.
"Toxtricity, use Discharge!" said Luna. Her Toxtricity releases a wave of electricity from his body that hits the male Nidoran, dealing damage; it reacts by stomping on the ground, causing the earth beneath Toxtricity to explode, dealing lots of super effective damage to him. "Toxtricity, use Boomburst!" Her Toxtricity releases a powerful blast of sound that shatters the ground in front of him and hits the male Nidoran, dealing damage, and sends it flying until it lands near the female one.
"Catch them!" said Lola.
"On it!" said Sam as she and Luna each take a pokeball out of their backpacks and throw them at their opposing Nidorans; the pokeballs hit them and suck them both in, and after some wiggling, they click.
"Good job, you two!" said Lincoln.
"Thanks, bro." said Luna. As the two pokeballs disappear to storage, they both look up their newly captured Pokemon on their Rotom Phones.
"Well, my Nidoran's a girl like we learned, she knows Leer, Poison Sting, Peck, Focus Energy, Fury Attack, Toxic Spikes, Double Kick, Bite, Helping Hand, Toxic, Flatter, Crunch, and Earth Power; she has the Poison Point ability which could poison an opposing Pokemon that hits her with a physical attack." said Sam.
"My Nidoran's a dude, he knows Leer, Poison Sting, Peck, Focus Energy, Fury Attack, Toxic Spikes, Double Kick, Horn Attack, Helping Hand, Toxic, Flatter, Poison Jab, and Earth Power; she has the Poison Point ability also." said Luna.
"Well, let's get back to searching." said Clyde.
After searching Giant's Bed for almost an hour, they find the mayor, who was looking at a barren garden bed.
"Alas, this field is no good , either." said the mayor. "The soil is barren; no crop could possibly grow here now."
"Excuse us, sir." said Lincoln, getting the mayor's attention.
"Oh, hello, kids." said the mayor. "What brings all of you here?"
"We want to know about the loyal steed of the King of Bountiful Harvests." replied Lincoln.
"This is hardly the place for storytelling." said the mayor, looking around the area they're in. "Come to my home in Freezington; it's better to have a nice chat in the warmth, after all."
"Yeah; it's cold out here." said Lola, wrapping her arms around herself.
Moments later, back in Freezington, the Loud Crowd were with the mayor inside his home.
"What can you tell us about the loyal steed of the King of Bountiful Harvests?" asked Lincoln.
"An old book I read long ago said the king's loyal steed was particularly fond of a certain special vegetable." said the mayor.
"Vegetable; blech!" said Lana. "But unless you add dirt to them, they're not so bad."
"Anyway, my memory isn't what it used to be; I can't recall what exactly the steed so desired." said the mayor. He then turned towards a bookshelf. "It's best if you search the bookshelf over there if you want to find out any more."
Moments later, the group were going through books from the bookshelf.
"Hey, guys; check this out." said Clyde, holding a book called 'Hardy Crops of the Tundra'. He began to read the book. "While carrots can be grown in the Crown Tundra, they have unusual growth habits. When grown beneath the heaped snow, these hardy roots tend to develop into Iceroot Carrots."
"Iceroot Carrots?" said Sam.
"When grown in tracts close to where many souls are laid to rest, Shaderoot Carrots will be your crop." said Clyde.
"Shaderoot Carrots sound like my kind of carrots." said Lucy from beside Clyde, startling him, and almost making him drop the book, but we was able to stay on the page he was reading.
"Shaderoot Carrots are a favorite treat for many ghost types Pokemon while ice type Pokemon seem to delight in eating Iceroot Carrots." said Clyde.
"So, does that book say which carrots the loyal steed likes?" asked Ronnie Anne.
"According to this, the steed the King of Bountiful Harvests rode upon loves both of the varieties, or perhaps one or the other." said Clyde.
"Which do you think it is?" asked Leni.
"Records does seem to contradict one another, with some stories speaking of a white steed delighting in Iceroot Carrots and others mentioning a black steed devouring Shaderoot Carrots." said Clyde. He then closes the book and puts it back on the shelf.
"So, which carrots do you think the loyal steed liked?" asked Luna.
"Maybe we should ask Calyrex." suggested Lincoln. Everyone nods and left the mayor's house. They soon arrived to the clearing; Calyrex was there, waiting for them.
"Were you children able to find something about my loyal steed?" asked Calyrex.
"Yeah; your steed use to like one or both of two carrots; Iceroot Carrots and Shaderoot Carrots." said Lincoln.
"Do you know which one it liked?" asked Lana.
"It has been so long since we rode together that I had completely forgotten." said Calyrex.
"With this information, we may be able to lure my loyal steed to me yet." said Calyrex. "Now that you mentioned carrots, I am starting to remember back when we were together, it would leap at any chance to eat some kind of crop; it took everything I had to restrain crop must've been carrots; thank you, children, I am in your debt."
"We just want to help." said Lincoln.
"What we must do now is clear." said Calyrex. "If we are able to find carrots somewhere, it should be but a trifle to lure my loyal steed back to me. Do the humans of the village grow any carrots? If we could obtain even a single seed, I could grow a carrot from it myself."
"I have some carrot seeds." said Lincoln, reaching into his coat pocket and pulls out the packet of carrot seeds the elderly man gave him the day they arrived in Crown Tundra.
"By the stars, you have carrot seeds?" asked Calyrex. "That strange bag contains the seeds of carrots?"
"That's what the guy who gave me these said." replied Lincoln.
"You humans never stop adapting and evolving; I am constantly amazed by your ingenuity." said Calyrex.
"Well, we hate to brag." said Lola, polishing her fingernails on her parka.
"No you don't." replied Lana. Calyrex looks towards Freezington.
"However, the fields of the village simply won't do; they're not suited for growing carrots." said Calyrex.
"Then where in Crown Tundra is?" asked Luna.
"If we could find rich soil, I could use my powers to grow the crops we need." said Calyrex. "Now, where might we find soil for growing these crops in this tundra of mine?" Calyrex closes his eyes and sees a vision of a garden bed in a snowy field. "I see two spots that might suit our needs."
"Where are they?" asked Lincoln.
"One is a field covered in pristine snow." said Calyrex. He then sees another garden near what appeared to be an old cemetery in his mind. "The other is a field by gravestones, where those who moved on were laid to rest."
"I like the second one." said Lucy; Calyrex opens his eyes.
"Either of those locations should allow me to use my powers and grow the carrots we need." said Calyrex. "Please, I ask that you choose a field and plant those seeds."
"Okay, everyone; lets go find that field." said Lincoln.
"I hope we find the one near the cemetery." said Lucy.
The Loud Crowd are going to find one of the fields to plant the carrot seeds to grow into either Iceroot Carrots or Shaderoot Carrots in hopes of bringing out Calyrex's loyal steed. Will they succeed? Wait and find out.
