"Why did I let you talk me into this? This is horrible. This is actually horrible. Is this how I die? Falling to my doom?"
Briar rolled her eyes. "You have wings, you idiot. Why would you fall to death?"
"To catch you."
Her face ignited with a fierce blush that was definitely due to the cold. Sometimes Faybelle really caught her off guard with her jokes. But when she turned to give a snark reply, Faybelle was looking at her with complete sincerity. Briar's brain shortcircuited. She shoved Faybelle's face away.
"Hey!"
Willing her blush to calm down, she responded, "Stop being so dramatic. Nobody's gonna fall. We are completely safe."
Faybelle gave her a look that screamed skepticism, but Briar just batted her eyelashes. "What? You don't trust me?"
She grimaced. "I don't think I have the right answer to that."
Briar gasped with indignation. The overembellished movement caused them to shake.
"Stop before we die for real!"
She dissolved into giggles, which only made them shake more.
"Briar!"
Faybelle and Briar were currently climbing up Ever After's tallest beanstalk. Faybelle would like to let it be known that she was, quite possibly, bamboozled into being here. If Briar had explained even a little bit more what climbing Ever After's tallest beanstalk meant, she would so not be here right now.
However, Briar had left out those key details, and Faybelle knew it had to have been on purpose.
So here she was, setting up a tent in the freaking sky. Sure, it was tethered to the beanstalk, but barely! If she breathed a little too vigorously, she was cooked. It was goblin shit.
"This isn't a tent, it's a shelf. How are we supposed to eat in this thing?"
"We aren't. That's just for laying down to sleep. We're eating how we did earlier."
Faybelle glared at Briar. "You mean we could have started eating already? Why'd we set this thing up first?"
Briar looked at her like the answer was obvious. And maybe it was obvious to camping people or climbing people or whatever. But Faybelle wasn't one of those people and she did not appreciate that look. She crossed her arms and huffed in exasperation.
"Once you eat, you're going to be really tired. Would you have rather set up the tent tired?"
Faybelle opened her mouth to argue that yes, she would have preferred that, thank you very much, but Briar was right. It was hard enough setting up when she could focus on what she was doing. They would have never been able to set it up after dinner. "Whatever, just get the food out."
Briar reached into her bag and frowned. She pulled the bag in front of her and looked inside. She moved some things around. She unzipped the pockets and glanced in each one.
"Hexes."
"What? What's wrong?"
"I forgot to pack the food."
"What do you mean you forgot to pack the food?"
"I mean what we had for lunch was it. There's no more food in this bag. We'll have to climb back down tomorrow to stock up."
"And what are we supposed to eat tonight?"
Briar dug around in her bag a little more and pulled out a small container. She opened it and inside were graham crackers, chocolate bars, and marshmallows. Faybelle looked at her in confusion. "What are you going to do with those?"
Briar was horrified. "You don't know what s'mores are?"
"No?"
Briar threw the container into Faybelle's arms and pulled out a little stove from the backpack. She made quick work of setting it up. Then, she grabbed two sticks out and handed one to Faybelle. She grabbed one of the marshmallows and pierced it with the stick. She gestured for Faybelle to do the same.
They cooked the marshmallows over the flame and then Briar grabbed two graham crackers and a chocolate bar. She made a little sandwich and slapped the marshmallow in the middle, dragging it off of the stick. Faybelle copied her actions. Then, she took a bite.
She gasped.
"This is magical."
"I knew you'd like it."
Faybelle smiled at her. "This does not change the fact that when we climb back down tomorrow we are not climbing up again."
Briar smiled back. "Maybe you'll change your mind after breakfast."
"We have breakfast food?"
"Yeah. You're eating it."
