A/N: Hi! So, here is a little OS which takes place directly after the movie version of Miraculous. If you haven't seen it yet, go check it out! I laugh at Miraculous all the time and get quite frustrated with it, but the movie was surprisingly good.
Anyway, there is also a French version (if you need it, head to my profile or search "Mon petit chat"), which is the original version, because guess what? I'm French. So, English is my second language, which means you could come across some weird phrasing. I translate my works when asked to or to reach a broader audience, but it doesn't mean I can do it perfectly. Besides, it takes a looooot of time, so to be quite honest I use Google Translate and then change the sentences that sound awfully unnatural.
By the way, if you compare it to the French version, no, it's not the same. I always change some details because… I can :D I'm the writer :p And also because when I write in French, I have tiny bits coming in English and they can't be translated well, so I usually change the phrasing or the action. When I translate, I change them back to match what they were supposed to be. Not sure if that makes sense.
I'll see you at the end to explain some cultural things :)
Enjoy!
They didn't know how long they stood there, basking in each other's presence. Long enough to start shivering from the cold despite the warmth nestled in their chests. Marinette pulled away from their embrace first.
"We should go find the others. You coming?"
She held out her hand for him to take. Her face looked so peaceful and happy. Adrien didn't need to be told twice: his hand naturally grasped hers. But this time, unlike all the other times their hands had found each other, they laced their fingers together. Because this time, they were done dancing around each other. This time, they had found each other. He had found Ladybug.
Still amazed by the discovery, he stared adoringly at the girl who guided him inside, leaving the snow behind. How could he not have seen her?
Even after they found their friends, Adrien didn't take his eyes off Marinette, and she didn't let go of his hand. As she was talking with the others, Adrien took in every detail of her: how the back of her hand went to her mouth when she laughed, how her little freckles moved, how her eyes closed and opened, little dimples appearing here and there with each smile. Adorable. She was adorable.
After a while, Alya started to notice Adrien's dumbstruck look and leaned over to whisper in her friend's ear:
"Girl, what did you do to him for him to look like that?"
Marinette turned to the blonde boy and noticed how he was looking her. She smiled softly.
"We just… talked," she said without taking her eyes off him. "Right, my sweet kitten?"
Adrien blinked, snapping out of his trance. Did she just?…
Alya stared at Marinette and mouthed "my sweet kitten?" but Marinette just shrugged.
The young man didn't notice. He was too busy plotting his next move. She wanted to play? Fine. Her face wore a sweet expression, but her eyes… Her eyes had a mischievous glow in them, one he had seen many times in his lady's. If he wasn't already convinced that Marinette was Ladybug, that look alone would have been enough to convince him.
"You know what they say about cats."
She raised an eyebrow, and he tugged on her hand to pull her closer. She let him, placing a hand on his hip as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders. She tried to appear unimpressed. Oh, he was going to enjoy making that look disappear.
"Even if they are very pawesome…"
She rolled her eyes.
"They have claws," he finished.
With that, he trailed a fingernail down her neck. He felt her shiver in his arms. In another context, he might have thought that she was angry by the way she was looking at him. But it wasn't anger, although it was just as fiery. He held her gaze, trying not to be distracted by a new source of wonder: he could touch her neck—her skin—and there was no suit to stop him.
"We can leave if we bother you, you know," Alya said.
"Actually…" Marinette began, "I think you owe me a dance, Adrien."
"Do I, now?"
"Yes. You refused to come to the ball with me, after all."
He leaned down and whispered in her ear:
"You broke my heart first, my lady."
When he pulled back, she looked slightly surprised. The surprise quickly softened, and tenderness took over her features. It made his chest swell.
"Come on," she said gently.
"You know what? I think we should all go and dance," Alya said. "What's the point of a masked ball if no one dances! Nino, are you coming? Where are both your masks, anyway?"
"We don't need them anymore," Adrien said.
Alya and Nino looked confused, and Marinette laughed lightly.
They made their way to the dance floor. It wasn't yet time to slow dance, but the two superheroes stubbornly refused to let go of each other. When the tempo slowed, they couldn't help but whisper sweet nothings in each other's ears between laughs and blushes. They looked silly, but they were in love, and you always look silly when you're in love.
"You called me 'my sweet kitten'."
"Mmmm… Well, even though you'll always be 'kitty' to me, I'm not sure it's very discreet in civilian clothes, don't you think?"
"But you called me 'my sweet kitten'."
Marinette stopped dancing momentarily and pulled back from Adrien's chest—where her head was resting—to look him in the eyes.
"Adrien?"
"I thought… I thought you could never fall in love with someone like me."
"I…"
She took a deep breath.
"I would have said yes."
"What?"
"When we were on the rooftops of Paris, I… I hesitated. But I was in love with you, well, you Adrien, for so long… I couldn't just give up like that. But that doesn't mean I didn't love Chat Noir with all his trust, his pranks, his loyalty, his kindness… The last thing I wanted was to break your heart, Adrien."
Without warning, he buried his head in her neck and hugged her tightly. She patted his back affectionately, knowing he needed some time.
"I really meant it," she heard vaguely.
When he pulled away, his eyes were misty with tears. He placed his hands on Marinette's cheeks and looked deep into her blue eyes.
"The girl behind the mask saved my heart. I just didn't know how true it was. I always felt so comfortable with you, Marinette… All those times we just hung out, all the times you listened to me and supported me, when… when we talked about my mother and my father… I could never talk to anyone like I talked to you. I fell in love with Ladybug because I finally felt like I existed with her by my side, but it was Marinette who healed my wounds. I love you so much if you only knew."
She smiled, her smile wet but proud. And he kissed her because now he could, because now he knew there was no one he loved more in the whole world. And she kissed him back, because now she knew it too.
"Woo-hoo! You go girl!" Alya shouted, excited.
Marinette giggled, and they broke the kiss.
"What if we save this conversation for when we're in private?" she said, amused.
"Your wish is my command, my lady. Or what do you prefer in civilian clothes? Princess? No. Purrincess?
"Kitty…" she fake-scolded him.
Adrien laughed. His family life may be chaotic, but, at that very moment, he felt like he had never been so happy and hopeful.
A/N: So? Liked it? Disliked it? Be sure to leave a comment or kudos :) It always brightens my day!
As for the cultural bits, it's essentially about the title. I feel like "my sweet kitten" is a bit over the top in English, but "my little cat" (which is the literal translation of the French title) was really weird. Might be me. Anyway, in French, "my little cat" can be used as a pet name for a child (generally a boy, since "cat" is masculine. But it could be a girl). I'm not sure anyone would use it for a lover, or it would become "my cat" to have a more mature vibe to it. I guess, it depends on the relationship you have with your partner. Well, people use "kitty" ("chaton"), so they could use "my little cat" ("mon petit chat")… It's just so damn long. You know what? Maybe I should have left if in French because this fandom looooves to use the French version of Miraculous which I personally haven't even watched because it makes me cringe SO hard.
Enough talking. Thanks for reading!
