Hello Readers! So, I don't know if it's just me, but in 2010s every anime was about "reincarnating into a videogame". And I guess watching enough got me into wanting to write my own. LOL
A quick side-note, while this is Breath of the Wild, I will also be using story plot from Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, because it's in the same universe. So the prequel game, before the main game. Hope that helps.
Also really quick, I am dyslexic, so sorry if I miss any spelling errors, I try my best.
Ok! Hope you enjoy! (^◡^ )
It was late in the evening—a pitch-black sky with heavy rain. Driving down an empty highway, a young woman tapped the steering wheel along to the beat of the music on the radio. Her tiny Chevrolet Sonic was stuffed with boxes—almost everything she owned, all packed in the trunk and back seats.
"~Some nights, I stay up cashing in my bad luck
Some nights, I call it a draw
Some nights, I wish that my lips could build a castle
Some nights, I wish they'd just fall off
But I still wake up, I still see your ghost
Oh Lord, I'm still not sure what I stand for, oh-oh
(Oh-ooh-woah) What do I stand for?
(Oh-ooh-woah) What do I stand for?
Most nights, I don't know anymore!~"
She sang her heart out, laughing that she couldn't hit the high note. But her music was cut short by her phone ringing. Smiling at the familiar number, she switched to a wireless call. "Hey, Mom, you trying to break your record for how many calls in one day?" she joked.
"That is not funny, Fio," came the older woman's voice, who didn't take the joke. "I'm your mother, so I have a right to monitor you!"
"It's also an invasion of privacy," Fio smirked, glancing at herself in the rearview mirror.
"I still can't believe this," her mom replied. "A sudden rainstorm out of nowhere?! Please tell me you're at least in the city now." Fio could hear the worry in her voice.
"Not for another half hour. But it's fine, the roads are clear." The young woman smiled with confidence, keeping her eyes on the dark road.
"Maybe I should have come with you. You have a lot of stuff, and—"
"Mom, will you please relax! The university is only two hours away. If I needed anything, I know you would fight tooth and nail to come." She furrowed her brows together, knowing her mom worried. "You've gotta let me take this next step by myself."
"I know... Your dad and I are very proud of you." There was so much love in her gentle voice that it made Fio's cheeks burn with happiness.
Not wanting the call to get all mushy, she spoke up. "K, I gotta focus now, Mom. I'll call you when I'm at campus."
"I love you, sweet-pea. Be safe!"
"Love you too, Mom." Fio lightly chuckled, ending the call. She breathed out a sigh and slouched down in her seat. Fio loved her mother very much, but also wished she wasn't so overprotective. Although, she was already missing home-cooked meals. "Guess I'll be living off of cup-of-noodles for a while." She chuckled. Taking another glance at herself in the mirror, she smiled with confidence. "Starting tomorrow, I am officially an adult!"
But her positive attitude was halted when her headlights suddenly went off. "What the—" Fio blinked in shock. She tried to flick the high beams on, but they were dead. The heavy rain kept pouring down, and in the middle of the night, she could barely see anything. "Oh crap! I need to get off the—" But as she scrambled to take action, her ears were blasted by the blaring of horns.
Fio turned her head, only to see the side of a large truck coming close to her right side. It didn't see her in time, and the two vehicles collided. Her airbags deployed, making her head hit the side of the window. All she could hear was white noise as her car flipped over.
"Where... am I?" It felt like forever before she finally opened her eyes, only to see... nothing. Fio blinked, turning her head left and right. There was no ground, no sky—nothing but a vast black abyss. She looked down at her feet. She felt no gravity; she was just hovering. "What... happened?" Why was she here? She wasn't supposed to be here; she was going somewhere.
"Is anyone out there?! HELLO?!" Fio tried shouting, but her voice didn't echo. "Hello! Anyone!" Her breathing grew choppy, anxiety creeping up. Why was this happening? Was she having a nightmare? Did she fall asleep in class again?! "PLEASE! I don't... want to be alone..." She pulled her legs up to her chest, curling into a ball.
Suddenly, off in the distance, a light shone through the darkness. Blinking, Fio uncurled, staring at the light. "Hello?!" she called again. "Am I... supposed to go to it?" Not seeing another option, she began to "breaststroke" toward the light.
Swimming in vast nothingness was a lot harder than she'd imagined. The closer she got, the dimmer the light became. Panicking, she swam faster, reaching her hands out. "Don't go out! Don't go out!" With one final lunge, Fio grasped the light, hugging it close to her chest. She panted, catching her breath. The light took on a physical form—it felt heavy, but at the same time, light. Lifting it up, Fio gasped at the glowing object. It shone like the sun, with fragments pointed in every direction. "Wow... it looks like a star."
Suddenly, a chuckle echoed throughout the abyss. Fio yelped, hugging the star close. "It is called a Star Fragment..." The light from the star glowed brighter than before, blinding Fio. She shut her eyes tightly until the light dimmed. Hesitant at first, she slowly opened her eyes again. Fio gasped in shock. Standing before her was a woman the size of a titan. She had long blonde hair, pointed ears, and was wearing a silk-white dress. Large white wings were spread behind her, making her appear angelic.
The woman smiled down at Fio and spoke in a kind voice, "Hello, human." Fio couldn't find her voice, so the titan continued, "My name is Hylia. I am the Goddess of Hyrule." She noticed Fio trying to pinch herself hard. "This is not a dream. I am real, and so are you."
Fio finally found her voice. "Wha—How... Umm... This is a lot for me," she said honestly. Gathering her thoughts, Fio asked, "W-Why am I here?"
"You died," the Goddess said bluntly.
"...Okay...?"
"Do you know why you are here?"
Fio looked down, trying to remember. "I—I was driving at night. I was headed to the university. I was supposed to start classes next week. But on the road... there was a truck..." It was as if her reality had shattered. As she pieced together her last moments alive, Fio's eyes widened. "No... no, no, no, no!" She frantically looked back up at the Goddess. "No! I can't be—! I... I was supposed to call my mom... let her know I made it..." Her shaky hands clutched the star fragment, and she looked down to see her reflection in the light. Tears formed in her eyes. "I was about to begin my next step... going to school for art..." Fat tears ran down her cheeks like two waterfalls. Squeezing her eyes shut, Fio hugged the star close to her chest, shaking like a leaf. "I wanted... to make a difference in life..."
The Goddess watched silently as Fio cried. Her face showed no emotion, but she didn't like seeing a broken soul. "Life never goes as we plan," she said softly. "But yes, your life ended too soon." Reaching her giant hand down, she used the tips of her fingers to gently lift Fio's face. "I offer you this: would you take another chance at life? Be warned, you will not return to your old world, and you will retain memories of your past. Some of those memories may haunt you."
Her eyes were bloodshot as she stared back up at the Goddess. Another chance at life...? She had just died, and now a Goddess was offering her reincarnation? Any sane person would jump at the opportunity, but... to be reborn in a different world? With memories of the person she once was? She would be starting fresh, all alone.
"Why me?" Fio hiccupped, sniffling. "Why am I so special?" There had to be a reason. Why, out of the billions of humans on Earth, was she chosen? What made her so special?
Hylia smiled. "Because you, Fio, can make a difference."
Make a difference—something every human being strived for. Maybe this was her opportunity to do just that. Maybe it wasn't meant to happen on Earth? She could reset, take everything she learned in her 18 years of life, and use it! Besides... what other option did she have?
As Fio looked up at the Goddess, she couldn't help but think, This is like the start of a video game. A character chosen by a god, sent to another world. Wait... is this... destiny? Giving it one more thought, Fio took a deep breath, wiped her eyes, and looked up with determination. "I'll do it!"
Hylia smiled, rising back up. "Then, you have my blessing, Fio. I will smile upon you." Her wings spread wide, white feathers blowing all around. The star fragment in Fio's arms shone once more before it shattered, the glow consuming her. Fio gasped as the light grew brighter. She took one last look at the Goddess before vanishing.
"Good luck, warrior."
"Hey... hey... HEY!" came a loud voice from above. Her eyes snapped open, and she took a sharp breath of air. Fio blinked a few times and looked up to see... a horse? It leaned its head down, sniffing her. "Get out of the road!" its rider shouted. Fio tilted her head to see a very angry man, dressed in medieval clothing. But then she noticed his ears... pointy.
"Are you deaf?! MOVE!"
Blinking again, Fio realized she was lying on her back in the middle of a dirt road. "Oh—ah, sorry!" She quickly scrambled out of the way. The rider grumbled, trotting his horse away.
Her heart was racing again, probably from the shock. But once she calmed her nerves, Fio took in her surroundings: open grassy fields, with a few trees off in the distance. "Did... did it work?" she thought, feeling unsure. Glancing down at her form, she noticed she was wearing an off-white skirt, brown shabby pants, and muddy boots. Very slowly, she reached up to touch her face and felt her ears. "No way..." she murmured. They were pointed.
She didn't have a great view of where she was, but she noticed the road ahead sloped up into a steep hill. Fio quickly scrambled to the top on all fours. Already out of breath, she pushed herself up and gasped at the sight before her: a regal castle, like something out of a fairy tale.
"Wow..." Fio whispered, taking in the view. "This is it... my new beginning... I hope I don't screw it up." She groaned, her confidence already deflating.
Sorry, I know this chapter is short, but it's the stepping stone! See you in the next chapter!
