Blueeyeddevil06, thank you for being my beta!
Mamoru woke up the next morning and smiled at Usagi. She was staring at him with a happy expression on her face. "Good morning, beautiful," he whispered.
She stretched and scooted over, pressing her naked body to his. "Have time for a bit of fun before you go off to work?"
He did.
Yamato chuckled when Mamoru showed up five minutes late. He shook his head good-naturedly and said, "I'm not even going to ask."
Mamoru blushed and fidgeted. "You won't believe me if I say I forgot I had to come in on a Sunday?"
"Is that a lie?"
"Yes, it's just less embarrassing."
His mentor rolled his eyes, "she's beautiful. I don't blame you.
"Now, did you learn anything new?"
Mamoru sighed, "there is another vampire in the mix. Her name is Ami, and she's Zoisite's… mate? It's a werewolf thing. Speaking of werewolves, they are all on our side now; they want to take down Diamond."
Yamato nodded and looked steadily at Mamoru, "there's more."
"There is. It's all so crazy. The new level of weirdness is that Rei can Vision Walk. She witnessed a portion of her past life. She was close with Usagi, Makoto, Ami, and another girl we hadn't met yet. They were all friends with Serenity, a princess, again, and Rei even found an ancient painting of her online. It was from around 1015 A.D."
Sighing out, Yamato said, "next time, tell me to sit down first. That's…" He walked over and sat on his desk chair heavily. "What do you think of it all?"
"That's the easiest part in all of this. I want to buy two one-way plane tickets and get her the hell out of Japan and away from the danger."
Yamato pointed at a briefcase on the ground. "Well, what I can do to help is give you that."
Mamoru picked up the briefcase, set it on the table, and opened it up. There was a silver dagger in a leather sheath. Next, he picked up a book, one he didn't know existed. As he thumbed through it, he realized it was a first-hand account about the metaphysical from over two centuries ago; it was handwritten. He then picked up two plastic boxes full of syringes. He looked at Yamato questioningly.
"The ones in the blue box are full of liquid wolfsbane; that one is obvious. The green box has liquid vervain in it. That works against vampires. I know you mentioned Sapphire was one."
Mamoru looked up at him and said, "thank you. You don't know how much I appreciate this. I can do something now."
While Mamoru was at work, Usagi was sitting at the counter of the arcade sipping from her milkshake. Motoki finished up with a customer and wiped down the counter as he talked to her. "Were you able to compel that guy to stay away from my sister?"
She smiled brightly at him and shook her head. Her pigtails waived wildly. "Nope. Not everything needs a supernatural cure. I texted Kunzite the picture you sent me, and he threatened to rip off the guy's balls if he goes near her again. His words, not mine."
Motoki smiled. "It's probably sick that I'm pleased by that."
She took another sip of her milkshake and shrugged. "It's handy for me. I'm… well, I'm not your conventional woman, am I?"
He laughed at that. "It's funny to me that it took a supernatural being that's over four hundred years old for Mamoru to finally show an interest in a woman. He's…picky."
"Naw, he's not picky. He was made for me. It's more that I don't see him wasting his time on things that don't matter. He's incredibly disciplined." And she mentally added, it would make him good at being a vampire.
"Is he…Is he a good boyfriend?"
"Amazing!" She said without hesitation. "He's so no-nonsense that I get what you're saying. Still, when he says something, it isn't flattery and that means the world to me. He instantly made a space for me in his life and I don't feel shoe-horned in. That's huge for him."
"It is."
"I get him, and I know what an effort he's making. His actions speak so loudly to me. My father was the opposite of him and is the reason I'm a vampire. He sold me for more power."
"Power?"
"Didn't I tell you I was born a princess? My father was king."
Motoki laughed and leaned on the counter. "Nope! You were focused on other things when you talked to me."
"Well, I was a princess and my father was a narcissist—clinically. They didn't have that diagnosis back then but I studied up on it. He checks all the boxes. Words are nice, but I need action."
He then said, "you moved in with him."
"That's quite the change of subject."
"No, this is all me looking out for my friend."
She smiled and said, "eventually, he'll realize he needs to just marry me. I'm letting him adjust. He's had a lot thrown at him, and he's taking it all really well."
"You're sure?" he asked skeptically.
She rolled her eyes, "I can count three prophecies and a vision that puts us together forever. But more importantly than that, yes, I'm sure. I adore him."
"Has he realized he will become a vampire yet?"
"No, but I'm not worried he'll make that decision when the time is right."
Motoki looked at her funny. "You're sure he'll decide to?"
"Absolutely. I would never even ask that of him, and since it's clear in the prophecies that he becomes one, it must mean it's his choice."
"Why wouldn't you ask?"
She took another sip of her milkshake and then said, "it's not my decision to make. He has to want this life. I didn't have a choice and I resented that for a long time. Would you want to be prodded into a decision that big?"
"I couldn't imagine being a vampire."
"Really?" She asked. "Don't you realize I could make you one? If you want it."
He looked at her wide eyed in absolute shock. "I never imagined…"
"And that's my point." She said decisively. "It's a huge reality shift. And an enormous decision. I can't make it for him."
"You were kidding, right?" He asked.
"No, if you want to become a vampire, I'll make you one. But that's completely up to you. You're his best friend. I'd do that for him in a human heartbeat."
Grandpa Hino stood before the Great Fire and sighed. He'd had one vision his whole life and it was the day Rei was born. Mars had visited him in the vision, and he always suspected the reason he was able to have the vision had more to do with her than his actual magical powers.
Mars had been clear, he was keeping her close and Hino was to stay by her side and protect her until the day came when she would have others to come alongside her.
She was going to become a witch of untold strength and become a legend in her lifetime. And that he would live to see that come.
Two days later, he saw his oncologist. The look on the man's face had been comical. When the results came back three weeks later, after testing and even an exploratory surgery due to disbelief, his stage four prostate cancer was completely gone.
From that time, he knew he lived for Rei. He would protect her and guide her the best he could. He also watched out fiercely for her happiness. Something she didn't seem to have a lot of until she met Usagi.
That led to a ton of research on his part and the blissful realization that the time had come when she would have others to stand beside her, and to him, meant she would finally feel like she would belong and that was everything to him.
He frowned. Jadeite had been a struggle for him. Yes, he meant what he said, but still, she was his granddaughter. Yet even his protective side had to admit, he marked her. In his culture, they were bound for the rest of their lives.
She was young, only nineteen, but he had the feeling that Rei, with all her walls, must have seen him in a vision to trust him that much. He would have to ask her about that, he knew.
He turned toward the shrine and smiled when he saw Rei giggling. He hadn't ever seen her giggle. She was sitting with Jadeite, and he was animatedly telling her something.
He was so glad he lived and got to see this, his precious granddaughter looking so happy with someone who adored her.
