The day was just like any other day. Normal. The bright sun encased the grassy hills and plains with light as flowerbeds were by my feet. I had grown accustomed to these sights during my travels and it had brought me over to this land called Miitopia. I had heard only a little bit of it, as my father never truly believed its existence. But then again, he doesn't even believe I can live on my own. But he's wrong. I've gone through twenty days of success living far from home. Anyway, like I said, it was just another normal day. And after sailing through storms across sea, it's nice to see some clear skies for a change. After another morning of journaling my adventures in my Traveler's Log, I put my that book and my pencil in my bag and looked at my surroundings.
"It is such a beautiful day," I said with a sigh. Yes I talk to myself, shut up. "The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and there's even someone's face flying in the sky."
Immediately, I stopped dead in my tracks and looked again. I even rubbed my eyes just to make sure I wasn't hallucinating. That face was still there, as clear as the morning sunlight.
"Wait a minute," I said. "A flying face?!"
The face started to fly further down the path, so I began running after it. I proabbly ran after it for twenty seconds before I stopped. And that's when I saw the face lower to the ground until it was right next to a pink butterfly.
"The heck?" I asked myself.
The face then moved backward and seemed to latch itself on the body of the butterfly. In a flash of ehite light, the serene butterfly had transformed into some kind of abomination. I visibly recoiled as I stepped back.
"Oh my gosh!!!!" I screamed. It was then that the possessed butterfly opened up its wings, like it was taunting me. Scared me half to death. And I don't get scared easily so that made it even more bizarre. I didn't need to think about what to do, my adrenaline kicked in so fast that I ran like a dang coward. I didn't know where I was going, I just needed to get away from the freak of nature that was taunting me, while I was screaming hysterically. I ran for what felt like five minutes before I tripped on a tree stump and fell forward, my elbows hitting the ground. My glasses also happened to fall off my face.
"Dang it." I said as I reached out for them. I began to pick myself up as I put my glasses back and once again looked around me.
"Where am I?" I asked. I looked around until something caught my eye. In the distance, there seemed to be a town. There was only one thing that it could've meant.
"Finally," I exclaimed. "Civilization!"
I began to walk to where the town was located. It was going to be a long walk, that was certain.
I arrived at the town about twenty minutes after I started walking there. As I entered, the first thing I saw was a sign with the words "Welcome to Greenhorne" on it,
So that explains where I am, I thought as I entered. I was then bombarded with the sights of people walking about the streets, the smells of food from booths and open windows, and just the overall happy vibes of the place. As much as I wanted to stay a while, I needed answers for what had happened earlier. Are monsters with faces in them normal around here? Further down the street of the town, I saw a pompous man with a red hat and uniform. I had to figure out who he was.
"Hello there, young traveler!" A voice called out from behind. I turned around and saw a older, mostly bald man wearing an orange shirt and holding a map in his hand. "Welcome to Greenhorne! My name i sRonert and I am your guide to this town. Can I help you with anything?"
"Uh, yes, you can," I responded, still caught off guard by him. "Who's that guy in the red?"
"Oh him?" Rober asked, pointing to the same man I was pointing to. I nodded in response.
"That man is our benevolent mayor, Chad," he told me. "What do you need to see him for?"
"I have to tell him about something weird I came across on my way here," I told him. "You see, on my way here, I came across a face flying in the sky, and this face seemed to fuse itself onto the body of a monster."
"I'm sorry," Robert started. "Monsters with people's faces?! Is that what you're saying?"
I again nodded. And that's when he broke out into laughter. And behind him, people who overheard our conversation were also laughing. I had only been here for less then five minutes and I already looked like I was making a fool of myself. I know when people are laughing about me and this was no exception. Eventually, Robert's laughter died down and he regained composure.
"You are quite the comedian, my friend," Robert said, still chuckling a little. "This right here is a safe and peaceful place. We don't need you to sacre us all with a made up story!"
"But I'm not making it up," I fired back. "This really happened!"
"Oh spare your words," an older woman spoke to me, holding her daughter by her dress. "You're gonna give my child nightmares with that story!
"You think I'm trying to?!" I yelled back at her. I was really starting to get angry.
"What's all this I hear about monsters with faces?!" a lower toned voice yelled out.
Everyone in town turned to the back of town, where a newly familiar man in red made his way to the crowd.
"You must be Mayor Chad." I said to him.
"You're correct," Chad replied. "I am the mayor of this small little town. Who are you?"
"My name is Wyatt," I began. "I am from the land of Carran, and I came here to find out where I belong. I did not mean to offend or harm anyone here but what I am saying is the truth. I know what I saw and I saw it with my two eyes."
"Wyatt," Chad began. "You were very likely hallucinating. Considering you're came from Carran, you might need some rest."
"Mr. Mayor, I haven't missed a days worth of sleep in my three weeks of travel," I said. I would have said more but I was cut off by the sky turning dark. In the distance, I heard an evil, maniacal laugh. Chad and the other citizens looked up to the now black sky.
"What is that?" I asked.
"It's...him!" Chad exclaimed. I turned to look at hum. Unlike the other citizens, who all had confused expressions on their faces, he seemed to know exactly what was happening.
"Him?" I asked, confused. "Who's him?"
"The Dark Lord," Chad said. "Jaidan."
Immediately after he said those words, a massive being came down from the sky. He had necklace shaped like an eye around his neck, large gray hands with fingers, purple clothes, and a shadowy aura around him. He let out an evil laugh.
"WHO ARE YOU," I heard one of the citizens yell out. Jaidan turned his direction to us.
"I am the Dark Lord Jaidan," he exclaimed with a booming voice. "I've come to unleash my fury against this pathetic little world! And I'm starting with you, people of Greenhorne!"
Jaidan began to charge up a some kind of magic between his hands.
"Say goodbye to your faces, weaklings." Jaidan yelled out. And then he cast his spell.
One by one by one, faces began to fly off of their body's. Some of these included Robert, an old Grandma, that Mother's daughter, and two other people. All of these flew over to Jaidan. I couldn't do anything but watch.
"It's horrible," Chad exclaimed. He was practically trembling in fear. "Their faces!"
"These will do nicely for now," Jaidan exclaimed. "But this is far from over. Tell your faceless friends to get used to life of wordless terror, because that's what they're stuck with. And to those of you that have been spared, take a nice long look at your poor little friends...AND DESPAIR!"
Chad let out another evil laugh as he and the five faces he stole fly off to the distance. The sky around Greenhorne was still dark however. I turned to Chad.
"And here I thought I was hallucinating," I said to him. I get it, kind of a jerk move but he kind of deserved it. "Did you know about this?"
"YES," he yelled. "What I said to you earlier was an act! I was fully aware of the Dark Lord's existence, but for the good of the people I had to pretend that he never existed! I thoguht everything would be okay if the citizens of Greenhorne remained blissfully ignorant! I never thought he'd come for this place!"
"So the citizens had no idea?" I asked.
"Yes," Chad answered. "Those were direct orders from the King."
"There's a king?!" I yelled.
"That's not important." Chad replied.
"We have to do something," the mother yelled from behind us. "That fiend has my daughter's face."
"There's nothing we can do, Althea," Chad said, turning around to face her. "Unless someone is stupid enough to go and save them then we can't do anything about."
It was then that a thought had triggered in my brain. And the second it triggered, my voice had a mind of its own. I turned around.
"I'll save your daughter's face!" I exclaimed.
Everyone that still had a face gasped when I said this. It may have only been three people but it felt like three hundred.
"Yeah, I said it," I replied. "I will go after her face! I will get all of the faces that the Dark Lord has taken! I will defeat the Dark Lord! I will save not just the people of Greenhorne, but the people of Miitopia."
"Are you serious?" Chad asked.
"In all my life, I've never gone back on promises," I responded. "And I don't intend on stopping that."
"So it's settled then," Chad yelled out. "The idiot from Carran will save us all."
"Hey!" I yelled at him. I don't really take insults well, if you couldn't tell. "Look I may be stupid but don't make me feel bad about it!"
"Sorry." Chad replied. Althea then walked up to me.
"Before you go," she said, reaching toward her neck. "I have a parting gift."
She removed the necklace and handed it to me. The necklace had a purple orb in the center of it.
"What is this?" I asked her.
"This is an heirloom passed down in my family for generations," Althea answered. "With it, you will be under the protection of the Guardian Spirit."
"Uh, thank you." I responded, trying to be kind. I put it around my neck.
"I should probably get going." I said. And then I started walking to the opposite side of town.
"Wyatt," Chad yelled. " I turned back to face him. "Go kick that Dark Lord's butt!"
"Will do," I said. I turned back around and then exited Greenhorne.
