Rei felt preoccupied as she stood in her shrine maiden outfit with Jadeite and her father standing next to her. She had been unsettled all morning, and if Jadeite had been away, she would have had her grandfather sit with her as she consulted Mars. It was all because she knew Jadeite preferred to find out she had done that "looking dead thing" after the fact. He wasn't being flippant about her abilities. He was just trying to express why he found it so horrible to watch.
She came to regret going against her instincts deeply.
Sapphire, Ami, and a man she didn't know came racing up as fast as they dared while humans were around in the daytime. As soon as she saw them, she knew she had been ignoring something important.
It was Sapphire who spoke to her first, full of desperation. "Ami called me when Naru didn't show up! Please tell me you can find her!"
"What happened?" Jadeite asked. "She'll need more details."
Grandpa Hino ushered them all off the main path and into his home. He knew this would probably be a conversation they needed to have in private.
The man that most of them didn't know spoke up. "I was meeting my daughter and Ami to talk about vampires, and she never showed. Ami called Sapphire, and he panicked and brought us here –very quickly, I might add." He had never known anyone to move so fast before.
"Great. You're the Buffy wanna-be," Rei grumbled.
"Buffy?" Satoru asked.
"American TV show. She kills vampires." She said flippantly.
Jadeite bumped shoulders with her. "Hey, Buffy's friends with a witch and a werewolf."
Rei sighed, "So the example breaks down quickly. I'm sure he'd be happy to kill us both." While she was worried about Naru, she was scared of Satoru.
"What are you?" he asked Rei. He knew Jadeite was a werewolf. Vampires and werewolves could be sensed by some humans. And he was one of them. Witches were impossible to sense, though. You had to catch them in the act to really know what they were. It was why Naru hadn't felt Rei's power sooner. She couldn't before she was a vampire.
"Witch," Sapphire snapped. "And our best damn hope of finding Naru." He turned to Rei, "Please talk to Mars and try to locate her. I'll sit with you."
Rei shook her head. "I'm not leaving my body with him around," she said, pointing at Satoru.
Sapphire immediately objected, "But-" He understood her issue, but his precious Naru was missing.
Cutting him off, Rei yelled, "Mars! Please, I need help." As he appeared, she explained, "I don't have to always go into the ether. And I'd rather bring him here."
"No, but it makes you stronger when you do," Mars chastised, arriving abruptly.
Rei pointed at Satoru. "He's of The Order of the Van Helsings. I'm not leaving my body while he's around. I don't trust him."
Mars focused on the man. "And he's still alive?" He couldn't comprehend why they all wouldn't just kill him on sight.
"He's Naru's stepfather," Rei said, stressing the step part since she didn't feel he had earned being called her father right now. "The conscious has been to leave him be unless he betrays her. It doesn't mean we trust him, though."
"And he will betray her," Mars snapped. "Why are you risking her life?! She's the closest thing you have to a sister." As much as he wasn't a fan of Bastet, he had quickly come to care for Naru. She was the most like Rei of anyone walking on the Earth. They were different in type, but it was their link to war gods that made them unique.
Sapphire liked Mars' reaction, and he found it exciting for Naru, who was an only child, to have someone who could see her as a sister. He pushed on, though. "You mentioned you felt it, Rei. Something is very wrong."
She nodded and looked at Mars. "We weren't killing him. We need help locating Naru. Can you sense her?"
He shook his head, "No. I can't. Bastet! Get down here!"
Smoke rolled in as the Egyptian goddess entered the room. She liked to make an entrance. "You called?"
Again it was Sapphire who said, "Please find Naru. I feel she's in danger. She's disappeared. It's either The Order or Rubeus who's taken her."
Satoru objected, "I didn't tell The Order about her!"
"That doesn't mean they couldn't have discovered her! They might trace you and your family now that you're the president!" Sapphire yelled back. "They hate our kind –surely you know that much!"
Bastet looked at Satoru and his ring and said, "Oh, I hate him. Can I eat him?" She then turned into a lion.
Rei shook her head, "No, you can't." Bastet changed back as she continued, "He's Nar's stepfather. She doesn't want him dead."
Satoru was trying to keep up with everything. It was his panic for his daughter that helped him hold on at all. He was pretty sure he was in the room with an Egyptian goddess, a Greek god, a priest, two vampires, a werewolf, and a shrine maiden/witch.
He ignored all that and looked at Bastet and said, "Please just find my daughter. I get that you hate me. She's important."
She curled her lip at him in obvious disgust and looked at Sapphire. "I'll find her." She wouldn't talk to Satoru. "Inform that killer that she's precious to me, and that's why I'll do any of this."
Rei watched, curious, as Bastet went into a very different trance than she ever had. It made sense, really. She was a goddess, after all. It took two long minutes before she snapped out of her trance in a furry. "Rubeus has her. She's in danger! Hurry!"
"He's going to kill her?!" Satoru asked, horrified.
Bastet shook her head, willing to answer him because now she had found someone she hated more than him. "No, rape her."
Sapphire looked at her in a panic, "He has!?"
"No. But he will if he can't figure out how to make the spell work that Beryl gave him."
Rei didn't even announce what she was doing. She called Usagi and let her know everything that was going on, including Satoru being there.
Sapphire grabbed the phone and said. "I'm going to text you the address to Diamond's backup headquarters. I'm hoping they're there. He's not creative enough to find a different location."
Grandpa Hino stood, his old bones creaking. "Call us when you find her," he said, indicating himself and Satoru. He wanted the man away from his granddaughter.
Rei nodded. "Thanks for watching, Satoru. You're human, so he won't be tempted to kill you."
Satoru objected. "I'm coming!"
Sapphire got in his face and said, "That's a bad idea. All you'll learn is to hate Naru. If you think we're going soft on anyone, you're an idiot. If you came, you'd see us all at our most monster-like."
"No matter what you all say, she's my daughter! I'm coming," objected strongly.
It was Jadeite who said, "Let him. The tension will be over sooner this way. He'll be forced to make a decision about us all."
"Fuck-it!" Sapphire then grabbed Satoru as he led them all to the hidden base, making the decision for everyone.
Usagi raised an eyebrow when she saw who had arrived at the location Sapphire had indicated. She could easily guess who he was. "Well, this will be interesting. We'll do introductions after we rescue her."
She then looked at Rei. "Open, please," she said sweetly. Satoru flinched when the front door was suddenly blown open with a large flash of fire and a lot of noise.
Mamoru kissed the top of Usagi's head and said to the group, "Watch yourselves. Satoru's here."
Every supernatural being in their group had come except for Minako. They were all close and very protective of each other. They stormed into the building only to see guns pointed at all of them.
Kunzite smirked. "Those will only work on him," he said, pointing at Satoru. Only one of the guys reacted and trained his gun on the human. Two seconds later, all six gunmen were screaming because they had broken arms. Their guns had been removed and snapped in half. They let the pieces clatter to the ground.
The group made their way up the stairs. Sapphire knew where Diamond's bedroom was in this building, and he guessed he'd find Rubeus there.
When they burst suddenly through the room, Naru was there naked and tied up bondage style. As Shingo identified Rubeus, he took hold of him quickly.
Sapphire covered Naru and worked to get her loose. He was sick with worry as he looked into her eyes, and all he perceived was her vacant expression. He turned her head towards him, and he didn't see a hint of recognition. In fact, it was like she didn't have any life in her at all. Her stare was vacant and cold.
"What the fuck have you done to her?!" He screamed at Rubeus.
It was apparent Rubeus was refusing to answer. That caused Usagi to get very mad, especially since she knew what he'd used on her. Mamoru was terrified when he felt the objects in the room start to shake. He tried to grab her, but she slipped his grip and took Rubeus by the throat, yanking him out of Shingo's arms.
She shook him and said, "The good news for me is that you don't have to talk. I know what you did, and I know how to undo it!"
He shook his head and mouthed words that wouldn't come. She loosened her grip enough for him to talk. "It can't be undone," he taunted.
"Beryl lied!" Usagi yelled, smiling wickedly. "That bitch didn't want you to know that all I have to do is kill you. Exciting, isn't it?" She then tightened her grip again. It was obvious by her facial expression that she would love to kill him."I want to know one thing. Answer me, and I might let you die quickly. Did you rape her?!" He shook his head, and she scowled. "I can't even compel the fucking truth out of you. I can feel the sick power Beryl infected you with." She didn't even know if she could trust him, and her compulsion was useless against him.
"I'm not lying," he whispered, struggling to breathe.
She loosened her grip more so he could really talk. "And why should I believe you?"
"Beryl said when the spell took hold, she'd have sex with me willingly. I wanted her to come to me."
Usagi sneered at him. "There wouldn't be any willingness about it. She would just do whatever you commanded! It would be akin to using a date rape drug. She wouldn't want you. She just wouldn't fight it!
"Why would Beryl give you that spell for Naru?!"
"She didn't," he admitted. "She gave it to me in case I found Endymion. Not that I even know what he looks like."
Mamoru whispered, "Oh, double shit." He was unsurprised to feel things vibrating in the room again. He yelled, "Kunzite, grab him!" As he obeyed, Mamoru pulled Usagi away and made her focus on him. "Usagi, look at me!" He was relieved when she listened. "He used the spell already, and he's not going to live much longer. Naru is going to be okay. Sapphire will ensure that. Look at me –you can see that I'm safe." He breathed a sigh of relief when the objects in the room grew quiet.
He then looked at Kunzite and said, "Let Sapphire take 'care' of him."
"Thank," Sapphire said, meaning it with all his heart. He walked over and then snapped Rubeus' neck, killing him instantly. He then rushed back to Naru as she surfaced from the spell, not wanting her to come to tied up and without his arms around her.
He caressed her face and kissed her forehead as she blinked up at him from his embrace. "You're safe now. I promise you that," He vowed. He was glad he got her completely untied before she came too. He pulled a blanket from the bed, wrapping it around her like a makeshift dress, and held her close. "I'm so sorry I wasn't there with you to protect you."
"I'm in your arms and safe now. That's all that matters," she replied.
"Can I ask what happened?" Satoru piped up. Naru only then noticed he was there.
She looked over at him and said, "Apparently, he was obsessed with me."
"He used a spell given to him to ensnare her. It was meant for… Someone else." Usagi knew the exact spell and had been warned by the message from the Oracle Miran that Beryl intended to use it on Endymion. She was glad that Satoru wouldn't know who Endymion really was. "He went against the female boss of his organization and used it for his own purposes."
Satoru said, "And the only way to break the spell was to kill him?"
"Sssure," Usagi said, lying. Rei was strong enough to have broken it, but killing him was just as effective. And really, he was their enemy and needed to die anyway.
"Okay," Satoru said, not picking up on her vague answer. He was too focused on his next question. "So, Naru's completely free of that awful spell?"
"Yes, she is," Usagi said, answering honestly this time.
He looked at his daughter wrapped in a blanket and Sapphire's arms. "Are you okay?"
She nodded slowly. "Yeah. I'm just disoriented." She closed her eyes and added, "He ambushed me, pulling me into an alley after immobilizing me with some kind of magic, and then woke up naked with you all here."
Sapphire's face grew stony. He knew that meant Rubeus stripped the clothes off of Naru. He was glad Mamoru understood that he needed to be the one to kill that man. It was the only thing bringing him any comfort right now. He sincerely appreciated his king's insight. Although he admitted to himself, Mamoru probably had just put himself in Sapphire's shoes.
Ami walked over to Naru and put a calming hand on her shoulder. "Soon, I'll tell you the story of how protective Sapphire is of you. It's romantic." Naru smiled at her friend in response.
"Where did all his people go?" Satoru asked. "Wasn't Rubeus one of the guys in charge? Otherwise, he wouldn't have this massive room. Wouldn't his people want to protect him?"
Zoisite laughed and said, "They all ran. If you were human and didn't know vampires existed until you came face to face with one, what would you do?"
"Join The Order of the Van Helsings," Satoru replied. "I know because that's what happened to me."
Makoto said, "Well, they ran like scared rabbits. But if you catch up to them, you could have some new recruits," she sneered. "They like killing. So far, it's all been humans, but you could train them otherwise."
"The whole point is that I don't like the killing of humans, no matter who does it!" Satoru objected.
"Sapphire just killed a human in front of you," Rei taunted.
Satoru said, "Sapphire killed the man who would have forced himself on my essentially drugged daughter. I would have willingly killed him too. He wanted to rape her!"
