The result of the conversation with the whole group, supernaturals and humans alike, was as hard as expected. The idea that the Generals had been forced to kill the women they loved had been devastating to discover. On top of that, Usagi and Mamoru had discovered their own sad ending.
When the information was first disseminated amongst the group, Naru cried. She was still coming to terms with what had happened to her and what had been coming next. Sapphire held her closely in his arms and stressed how it was against her will, and it had been against all of theirs too.
He continued to press that they had all accepted him after he was forced into obedience and wasn't able to stop the bombing. Pointing out that they should be able to forgive themselves, too, for what had happened to them.
Usagi stressed that Beryl was the one at fault, not them.
Jadeite was amused by the fact that even Satoru was stressing to them all that it wasn't their fault and that they needed to direct their anger in the proper direction.
Still, even if he could make himself fully believe it was just Beryl's fault, the truth remained that they had lost a child. Something that stung all the more when he looked into Rei's eyes and saw the loss there.
Luna grabbed Rei into a big hug unexpectedly as she was working at the shrine. She wrapped her in her arms and rubbed her back.
Rei rested in her arms and said, "Yes, Great-great-grandma, what is it?"
"You're hurting, and honestly, the wonderful men in your life have no idea how to help you. They're worried."
Rei nodded slightly and, sighing, said, "I had just found out I had been pregnant. I was so excited to feel the new life in me, and then immediately, I found out the baby had died before I held him or her. I'm adjusting, I guess is the right way to put it."
Luna pulled back and rested her hand on her stomach. "I understand the feeling of excitement. That had to be more than just an adjustment."
"But it's all so weird! It was the past me pregnant with a child, that had it lived, would have died of old age centuries ago. How do I wrap my head around it all?"
Luna smiled at her. "I had an idea. A hope, really. The baby existed, even though it didn't make it to birth. What if your child was reincarnated too?"
Rei cocked her head and looked at Luna. "Is it possible?"
"Is any of this possible? I mean, you're a powerful witch that created the first-ever werewolf/vampire hybrid. Think of everything that's been happening, even down to Artemis and I being reincarnated grandparents of Grandpa Hino."
Rei grabbed Luna's hand and pulled her toward her house. "I'm just going to call him to come here."
Once they were in private, Rei called Mars, who showed up quickly. "You called?" He asked. He was glad to see her looking better than the last time they talked. She looked like she had a goal.
"Luna had an idea. Can my child have been reincarnated?"
Mars let a slow smile spread across his face. "It's possible. But if I can't find anything-"
Rei cut him off. "Then nothing changes. I get it. I just need to know. Please."
He nodded and bowed his head a bit in thought. "This could take…" he looked at her and shrugged. "I don't know how long this could take. It's a big world." He then closed his eyes again and held up his hands.
Mars searched Japan first. He hoped not only had the child been reincarnated but that Rei would be able to meet him or her. He had a feeling it would go a long way in setting her obviously troubled mind.
While that was going on, Luna had texted Jadeite surreptitiously. She knew he needed to be there for the answer either way.
When Jadeite arrived, he gave Luna a grateful look and then held Rei. As they waited for the answer, he wanted her to feel comfort in his embrace.
Mayumi blinked back tears as soon as she saw Naru walk into their home hand in hand with Sapphire. She knew she hadn't invited them, which could only mean one thing –Satoru had. It wasn't that she didn't want to invite them. It was that she hadn't been sure that place would remain her home anyway.
Satoru had asked her to come to talk. A request she had felt wary about until she saw Naru arrive smiling.
She embraced her daughter. "You're here. He invited you in?"
"Yes, Mom, he did. He listened to you and discovered he was wrong. He's working with me and my new friends now."
As Mayumi pulled back, smiling from the embrace, she looked at Naru's necklace. "Did Sapphire get you that? It's a really amazing piece of jade." She knew her jewelry well after owning a jewelry store for so long.
The whole story came out then of who had actually killed Satoru's sister, how the monster took the necklace, and how Usagi returned it. By the end of Satoru's recital of what happened, even Sapphire was more convinced that the man really was on their side. And, of course, it helped that he invited them into his home. It showed he wasn't afraid of being murdered by them in his sleep.
Mayumi embraced Satoru crying. "I'm just so happy. The idea of losing either of you killed me. I got everything that I wanted! I'm so happy."
He held her and kissed the crown of her head. "You were right, by the way. It is a cult."
There was a knock on the door, and Naru and Sapphire knew exactly who it was on the other side. They could sense them. As Satoru stood, it was Naru who said to him, "It's Rei and Jadeite." She then looked at her mother and said, "They are friends of ours."
As soon as the door opened, Rei came running in, and Naru found herself in a big hug. She hugged Rei back as she heard her father welcome Jadeite in. Despite not needing to be invited in to be able to physically enter, she knew Jadeite would wait to be polite.
"Are you a vampire too?" Mayumi asked.
He smiled and shook his head. "No. I'm a werewolf with manners. That said, Rei is a witch with normally very good manners. She just needs Naru right now."
Mayumi instantly liked the newcomers. Jadeite had charmed her, and Rei was obviously close with her daughter. She still felt the need to ask, "And you met my husband?"
Jadeite smiled kindly. "We did."
It was Rei that looked up at Naru and turned the conversation. "Luna had an idea. She wondered if our child could have been reincarnated." With happy tears in her eyes, she said, "He was."
Naru teared up. "It was a boy?"
"Yes," Rei said, eyes shining with joy.
Mayumi looked at Satoru in confusion. "She lost a child. That's so sad."
He said, "It's complicated, but yes. It's really sad."
Everyone paused and looked at Mayumi. There was a lot she didn't know, and some of it would be very disturbing for her to find out.
Still, Rei was impatient, and so was Jadeite. He said, "We both lived a thousand years ago, and we were in love then. There is more to the story, it's complicated, and I'm sticking to the relevant facts. There was an evil woman then, a dark witch, that caused the death of our unborn child. We found out that not only were we reincarnated, but so was he."
Naru grabbed Rei's hand and squeezed it with joy. "That's amazing! Who?"
Rei blushed and stood up next to Jadeite. "See, that's the thing," he said, putting his arm around her. "Ma- our source." He thought about just how much there was to explain to Mayumi, and talking about Mars would just delay what Rei wanted to say. "He located him here in Japan. He's older than us too."
"He is?" Satoru asked.
Rei nodded, smiling. "Yes, you are."
Dead silence filled the room for a full minute.
Mayumi was the first to speak. "My husband is your reincarnated unborn son?"
Jadeite nodded, and wanting to break the tension, he said, "Yup, sonny boy." That got everyone to chuckle.
Really Jadeite was terrified that Satoru would reject it all. Especially since they were both supernatural, he felt Rei trembling and saw the looks passed between Naru and Sapphire. Everyone was waiting for his response.
Satoru looked at his wife first and asked, "Would it be weird for you if I hugged Rei? She is my mom."
"No," was all she got out before Rei rushed to hug him, and then she was crying all over him.
