"Ha-ha, I bet you kids are gonna love it! A tour around the Dandy Candy Store!" declared a brown-haired woman with a peach complexion, she wore a purple and orange shirt with the female symbol on it, with blue jeans and a blue headband. Her pink lips were stretched in a large smile, each word flashing all her teeth as if she was throwing every word out of her mouth.
"I'm sure they will dear," Howard said, he had the same light complexion as his wife, his hair was a vibrant blue and looked a bit older than she did, and he wore a light red shirt with purple pants. It made him feel warm that his choice of clothing made them look more like a couple.
Howard craned his neck to look into the back of the minivan that Betty, his wife, was driving. The back seats were filled with car seats housing their children and the children of their neighbours. He wasn't too sure about taking them all out themselves but surely it would be fine, after all, how much trouble could a bunch of babies be?
In the middle of the first row of seats was their son, Phil, he wore a pink undershirt with black pinstripes with a turquoise overall dress with a handkerchief on the left side and a duck on the right and had a little tuff of brown hair. Not that Betty would openly admit it to their friends but she loved styling that little tuff. Next to Phil was their daughter, Lil, she was wearing a pink shirt with black pinstripes; a dress that matched her brother's overalls, with a white handkerchief on the left side and a yellow duck on the right. Like her brother she had a small amount of brown hair, Betty had combed her hair down and tied it with her signature pink bow. It was adorable how alike they looked.
And in the back row, or the back back as Angelica liked to call it, were another two car seats. The first cushioned Tommy; unlike the other babies he hadn't grown any hair which kinda made his eyes look bigger than they should, he wore a powder turquoise shirt which was a little snug showing off his belly button, then again babies did grow ridiculously fast and a baggy diaper with yellow straps on it. At least people didn't really ask questions when it came to how much a baby was wearing. The remaining car seat, next to Tommy, housed the red-haired freckled wonder, Chuckie, he was fair-skinned with messy hair, and purple square glasses, and he wore a white sleeveless undershirt beneath a cerulean blue shirt with a picture of Saturn on it.
At least they didn't have to bring Angelica. Just the thought gave Howard a headache. He much rather the adorable sounds of the babies in the back gurgling and making small random words at each other. It was almost like they were actually having a conversation.
"Where are we going, Tommy?" Chuckie asked, there was a slight lisp to his tone as if he was still struggling with his growing teeth.
"My mom said we're going to a magic place with lotsa candy!" Tommy cheered, raising his pudgy arms into the air.
"I wonder if they'll have gummy worms," Lil said, looking at her brother.
"It'd be better if they have actual worms mmm they wriggle more," Phil hummed, thinking back to the many times he and Lil were in the garden and found a wriggly worm.
"Mmm those are good but I like redgular worms better," Lil said.
The van took a tight turn and the babies erupted into a cacophony of wees and giggles as their tummies filled with happy butterflies.
"Ah, here it is!" Betty yelled as she stuck another sharp turn into a car park, the air of the van filling with the beautiful sound of baby laughter. She spun the wheel manically between her hands making the vehicle veer sharply to one side and slide neatly into the first available parking spot.
Howard was gripping the door and the side of his chair tightly, his heart pounding like a freight train, he looked back at the children and was relieved to see them still laughing.
"Right, let's get the little tykes out and in!" Betty said, indicating with her thumb to a brightly coloured store across the street from the car park.
…
"Welcome! Welcome! You must be our lucky contest winners!" declared an overly cheerful man dressed in a vibrant pinstripe red and white suit with a matching top hat, holding a cane between his hands.
"Got it in one!" Betty said.
"Ha-Ha!" the man leaned forward to look over the herd of toddlers in front of the adults, "I bet you little guys can't wait to see what we have in store for you at the Dandy Candy Store! We have, Rainbow Drops, Fudgemallow Delight, Chilly Chocolate Crème, Chocoblasters, Runts, Strawberry Fudgecicles!" he cupped a hand around his mouth as though he were about to tell a secret, "we even have a few samples from the vault that haven't been released yet," he added in a whisper.
The man danced back and tipped his hat making the toddlers laugh at the silly man.
"Sammy's the name and Dandy's Candy's the game!" Sammy finished in a sing-song voice, taking out four brightly coloured chocolate bars from his hat and handing each to one of the kids.
"Err…are we sure that these…" Howard began, his voice quiet and trembling slightly from lack of use as he raised a hand to punctuate his coming point.
"Are you quite sure these candies are suitable for the kids?" Betty finished.
A chorus of mmms filled the room as the children crammed the creamy chocolates into their mouths, chewing it up and covering their lips and cheeks in their brown gooey goodness.
"Oh, I assure you, we have plenty of candy perfectly suited to your little ones' taste buds," Sandy answered, doing another little jig on the spot and raising his cane into the air.
"How did he do that?" Lil asked, licking her chocolate-covered fingers.
"I saw a man do that once with a wabbit, he pulled it out hof a hat," Chucky said.
"Ooh maybe he's a wizard," Phil offered.
"A chocolate wizard!" Lil squeaked.
"Oh! I bet he has tons of magic candy!" Tommy said, looking around at the colourful shelves with even more interest than before.
"Really Tommy?" Chucky asked.
"Yeah! I bet chocolate wizards have mountains of magic candy!" Phil said.
"Ooh maybe we should go an finds it," Lil said.
"Yeah," Phil said.
"Err, I don't know about that guys," Chuckie said.
The twins turned and began to walk to the counter, ignoring their shaky-kneed friend like they normally did.
"Look! A little tunnel!" Lil said, pointing to the opening of the counter with a lid over the top that the employees would lift when going behind the counter.
"I bet it leads to the magic candy mountain!" Phil said.
"Hey guys wait for me," Tommy said, waddling after them.
"Hold on, guys don't leave me," Chuckie lisped, chasing after his friends, unnoticed by the adults, still going over the suitability of the offered candy.
The toddler party waddled through the little tunnel.
"Look all the candy is backwards," Lil said, pointing at the display case.
"Maybe this is the other side of the mirror," Phil offered.
"Other side? But I don't wanna be on the other side of the mirror!" Chuckie complained.
"Oh, don't be a baby Chuckie, where's your sense of adventure?" Tommy said, waving his nervous friend forward.
"I think I found where the wizard keeps his candy mountain," Lil called as she stepped through an open doorway into the back room that was filled with boxes, stacked all the way up to the ceiling.
The once-grey concrete dyed a swirl of purple, pink, and blues from spilt candies and running dyes. Combined with the ominous shadows cast by the towers of boxes gave the storeroom a mystical ambience.
"Wow!" Phil and Lil said together as they looked around the room.
"I really don't think we should be back here guys," Chuckie said as he stepped into the room.
"So where's the mountain of candy?" Phil asked.
"Well the wizard probably hiddens it, I bet it's behind one of these boxes…maybe if we climb up we'll be able to see its?" Tommy suggested.
"Yay, climbing!" Lil cheered, turning, and making her way to the closest box that didn't have two or three or more on top of it. "Phil, can you give me a hand?" Lil asked as she grabbed the rim of the box.
"Sure thing," Phil laughed, stepping behind his sister, he grabbed her by her waist and with a great effort pushed her up and Lil pulled herself on top of the box, nearly kicking Phil as her legs lashed out at the air in search of solid ground before she crawled on top of the sealed box.
"Can you see anything?" Tommy asked as Lil stumbled to her feet and looked around.
"Lotsa boxes…wait there's some that's opened, they're full of candy!" Lil cheered.
"You mean all these boxes are full of candy?" Chuckie asked, looking around, his mouth opening in a state of awe.
"Magic candy," Tommy added.
"Then what are we waiting for?" Phil asked, waddling over to one of the smaller boxes as his sister climbed back down from her box and began to try to push it over. The box shifted but not enough to tip over. "Hey, guys a little help," he called, the group came together on one side of the box and began to push, though Chuckie needed a little more encouragement.
THUD
The box tipped and fell to the floor with a flump, the tape already severed during stock check did not restrain the cardboard flaps from opening and an avalanche of glittering red-wrapped chocolate bars spilt onto the floor. Phil dived in and started opening the bars, soon followed by Lil, then Tommy, and then finally Chuckie.
It didn't take long until they were all covered in melted chocolate with the odd bit of foil sticking to their arms or cheeks from the wrappers.
"Hey, what's that?" Lil asked, noticing a small foil-wrapped item a few yards from the pile of spilt chocolate, having fallen off when the box was tipped.
"Hmm? Is it candy?" Phil asked, reaching for the item but his oldertwin was too quick, Lil snatched the small wrapper and looked at it.
"Oh, I know this, it's grown-up candy," Lil said excitedly.
"Grown-up candy?" Chuckie asked.
"Yeah! I saw Taffy eatened some when she was looking after us, when I asked for some she swaid it was grown-up candy," Lil said.
"Candy only for grown-ups?" Chuckie asked.
"But if it's magic candy-" Phil began.
"Maybe it'll make us growned up!" Lil finished, her tiny digits clumsily unwrapping the dark blue strip of gum and shoving it into her chocolate-covered mouth just as a giant shadow eclipsed the group.
"Ah, there you are! So this is where-" Betty's loud, energetic voice suddenly broke off as she watched her baby stuff a strip of gum into her mouth and she froze.
"Uh oh…" Sammy said as he realized what had happened.
"What do you mean uh oh?" Hank asked, his eyes widening as he looked from Sammy to his daughter.
"We need to get her to cough it up before she chokes," Betty stepped forward.
"She won't choke."
All eyes turned back to Sammy.
"It's one of our samples, it was sent to us by mistake, it's still in the trial stage but it lubricates itself enough so it'll slide straight down her throat so she won't choke."
"So, why'd you say uh oh?" Betty snapped, her voice turning from over-enthusiasm to brimming anger.
Lil's little nose began to darken, turning purple, then violet before taking on an identical shade to a blueberry.
"Hey, your nose is turning blue," Chuckie said, pointing at Lil's face, her eyes came together as she tried to look at her own nose.
"Hey! It really is magic candy! Cool!" Phil said.
"It tastes weird…" Lil said, her mouth opening as she thoughtfully chewed the gum.
"Weird how?" Tommy asked.
"It tastes like soup…"
"Soup?" Phil asked, his eyebrows coming together as he frowned.
The colour began to spread out from her nose, painting her chubby cheeks, and catching her mother's eye.
"She's turning blue! She's allergic!" Betty yelled, crossing the room and picking up her little girl, "we need to get her to a hospital."
"It's not an allergy it's just one of the side effects," Sammy said, trying to calm her.
"Side effect!" Betty snapped.
"One of?" Howard asked, his quiet voice holding a firmness that was rarely there.
Sammy took a calming breath.
"It's a sweet made for customers that don't have as much money and want something a bit more substantial…it's basically a three-course meal in a strip of gum."
"What are you talking about?"
'He sounds like Stu,' Howard thought to himself.
"Yeah…first soup, then a roast beef dinner, then blueberry pie…"
"Why is she turning blue!?" Betty snapped.
Sammy flinched.
"It's one of the side effects…normally it doesn't happen until the final course but-"
"Get to the point!" Betty shouted, grabbing the front of Sammy's suit with her free hand. The man's eyes widened and he swallowed.
"It causes their skin to turn blue…then some swelling and-"
"Swelling!"
"We should sue," Hank said, his expression going stern as the supposed candy started to sound more like a bad medication with each word.
The blue colour was creeping down Lil's neck now and her tummy was starting to expand. Lil began to giggle as she felt something moving in her tummy. Her little hands came to her tummy, pressing into the covered skin and feeling something swirl inside her. It was like a bag with some water in it. As she giggled, bubble-filled saliva dribbled down her chin, leaving a dark blue trail. Her mouth filled with the sweet taste of blueberry pie. Lil kicked her little legs happily.
"It's temporary," Sammy rushed to get out, "she's just going to swell with blueberry juice."
"With juice! She might drown!" Betty said, fear replacing the anger again.
"No! No! No! She won't! No one has ever drowned from it."
"Then what has happened?" Hank asked, his tone sending a shiver down Sammy's back.
"We just need to squeeze the juice out, we have the device needed on hand, all branches do to be on the safe side," Sammy said, deliberately not answering Hank's question.
Betty's arm began to droop as her daughter began to take on a round shape, even her fingertips had turned a dark blue now and Betty could feel the juice inside her baby sloshing around. It was like she was holding an oversized water balloon; she didn't even want to put her down for fear she would pop.
"Then go get it!" Hank snapped, for the first time raising his voice, Sammy didn't hesitate, he took his chance and ran deeper into the storage room to retrieve the juicer.
Betty groaned as she finally gave in and lowered Lil, very carefully, back to the floor. The babies gathered around her.
"Are you feeling, okay?" Phil asked.
"Hehe yeah, it's like having a pool inswide my tummy," Lil giggled, flapping her arms to slap her rotund size, she could even touch her tummy now and resembled an oversized blue bowling ball. The sound echoed inside her own tummy and was joined by a splashing sound as waves splattered into each other inside of her making her belly jiggle as the juice sloshed around inside of her.
"Wow you're like a balloon," Chuckie said, timidly poking Lil in the side. The clothing sunk beneath his small finger and Lil giggled as she stumbled to one side then the other, the growing juice inside of her sloshing from one side then the other, pushing Chuckie's finger away.
"That tickles!" Lil laughed; a rumbling sound was heard from her tummy.
**Burp**
The phantom flavour and smell of blueberries filled the air. Lil and Phil both burst into a fit of giggles.
"Good one!" Phil laughed.
"That was a super big **Burp** one," Lil erupted into another burst of laughter, she began to feel a fizz in her tummy as her tummy tried to digest the growing amount of blueberry juice making it fizz like soda.
The sound of squeaky wheels filled the air as Sammy returned wheeling a large contraption.
"I got the squeezer; it'll take a bit of time but we'll get all the juice out of her…"
"If you think I'm putting my little Lil in that-"
"It's perfectly safe," Sammy interrupted, his voice shaking, "we do this all the time."
"If you so much as harm one hair on her head," Hank threatened, glaring at the once flamboyant man.
"I wonder if my pee will be bwue," Lil said looking down at her tummy, her clothes had ridden up and she could see her belly and bellybutton had also changed colour, as she craned her neck to look down she felt a sudden rushing inside of her.
**Slosh**
"Whoa!" Lil fell back as a wave of juice inside her pushed her over, her tummy, legs and arms rippling with the juice inside them, she looked up at the startled adults and started to laugh. This was so much fun.
"Is there any more of that growned up candy?" Phil asked, looking around for another small wrapper.
"I don't know if you should have some too…" Tommy said, looking at the giggling, jiggling Lil.
Sammy reached down and lifted the toddler up and put her in the machine.
"This'll take a couple hours…I suggest you wait in the storefront…you can have anything you like compliments of the store."
"No, I'm staying back here, Betty you take the children through."
Betty hesitated, she hadn't seen her hubby so firm in a long, long time, but in the end, she took the children back to the front of the store where one of the employees met her and almost buried the children in candy.
It took two hours before Lil was juiced and even then, she was still blue when she came back out of the back room but Sammy ensured them her skin should return back to normal in a week when all the remaining nutrients had…passed.
The car ride back was very quiet.
Apart from Lil and Phil talking about the grown-up candy.
"Next time I get to try it first," Phil said.
Lil thought a moment and then agreed. Maybe it would be better to try the magic candy after Phil in future.
