Chapter One: A New Path
The crisp winter air carried the scent of snow and pine through the quiet streets of Aspertia City. A thin layer of frost clung to the rooftops, glittering under the late morning sun, and the distant cry of Wingull echoed over the coast. The town had settled into its usual calm, but for Boe, the stillness felt... strange.
It had been weeks since the Unova League, yet the rush of battle, the deafening cheers of the crowd, and the surge of adrenaline still lingered in his mind. He had come so close. And now, with the League behind him, an unexpected question loomed in its place.
What now?
He glanced at his older brother, Rev, walking beside him up the familiar path to Professor Juniper's lab. Rev had always been a step ahead, the first to leave home on his journey, the first to carve his name into the world of Pokémon. But now, for the first time in years, they stood on the same ground—both searching for their next step.
Rev didn't seem worried, though. He never did. Hands stuffed in his jacket pockets, he looked completely at ease as he pushed open the door to the lab. The warm scent of parchment and polished wood greeted them, mixed with something faintly metallic—Pokéballs being calibrated, no doubt.
At her desk, Professor Juniper glanced up from a stack of papers, her glasses slipping slightly down her nose. As soon as she saw them, her lips curled into a knowing smile.
"Well, if it isn't two of my favorite trainers," she said, setting her pen aside. "I had a feeling I'd be seeing you both soon."
Boe chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. "That obvious, huh?"
Juniper smirked. "A little. Most trainers get restless after the League." She gestured toward the seats across from her desk. "Sit, sit. Tell me what's on your minds."
Rev dropped into the chair with a sigh, leaning back comfortably. "The League was incredible, but it made one thing really clear—we're not done growing. We want to keep training, keep pushing ourselves."
Boe nodded. "Yeah, I mean, I know I've come a long way, but it still feels like there's so much to learn. I don't just want to be good—I want to be great."
Juniper clasped her hands together, eyes twinkling with interest. "That's exactly the kind of mindset that makes a truly remarkable trainer. The journey doesn't end just because you reach one goal. There's always something new out there."
Boe exhaled, exchanging a glance with Rev. That was just it—where was the next step? Unova had been their home, their proving ground, but staying here felt... safe. Comfortable. And he wasn't sure that was what they needed.
Rev leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "We were thinking about traveling again. Maybe even trying a new region, but we don't know where yet."
Juniper hummed in thought, tapping a finger against her desk. "Well, if you're looking for something new, have you considered Johto?"
Boe blinked. "Johto?"
Rev raised an eyebrow. "That's... really far."
Juniper nodded. "It is. But it's also one of the most fascinating regions out there. It has a powerful Pokémon League, strong traditions, and a deep connection to legendary Pokémon. Not to mention…" she smiled, "it's where some of the most exciting Pokémon Egg research is happening right now."
Boe tilted his head. "Egg research?"
Juniper leaned back in her chair. "Professor Elm, the leading expert on Pokémon evolution and hatching, has been conducting a study on how different environments affect Pokémon before they hatch. He's looking for trainers to help raise Pokémon from Eggs as part of their journey."
Rev crossed his arms, considering. "So we'd be starting fresh—with new Pokémon?"
"Exactly," Juniper said. "Johto would be a completely different experience. If you're serious about challenging yourselves, learning from different Pokémon, and training in a whole new way, it could be the perfect opportunity."
Boe hesitated, mulling it over. A new beginning. A fresh challenge. The idea of traveling somewhere completely unfamiliar, leaving behind everything they knew, was daunting—but also exhilarating.
Rev, ever the pragmatic one, was already weighing the logistics. "It's a long way from home, though. A whole new League, different Pokémon... it's not a small decision."
Juniper nodded. "It's not. And I'm not saying you should jump in right away. Just think about it. The journey is yours to decide."
Boe exhaled, running a hand through his hair. "Johto, huh…?"
Rev leaned back in his chair, thoughtful. "We'll talk it over. But it does sound tempting."
Juniper grinned. "That's all I ask."
As they stepped back outside into the chilly air, the sky had shifted into soft hues of gold and violet, the sun beginning its descent over the horizon. The world felt vast and open, full of possibility.
Boe shoved his hands into his pockets, glancing at his brother. "Do you think we should do it?"
Rev smirked. "I think... we'd be crazy not to."
A slow grin spread across Boe's face.
A new journey was about to begin.
The flickering lights of the party illuminated the cozy living room of Boe's home, casting a warm, golden hue over the gathering. The air was filled with the hum of laughter, conversation, and the faint crackling of the fireplace. It was New Year's Eve, and Boe's family had invited friends and neighbors for the occasion. The house was bustling with the sounds of people catching up, exchanging stories, and celebrating the end of the year.
Boe stood by the snack table, absentmindedly nibbling on some chips as he watched the clock on the wall. The seconds seemed to stretch out longer than usual tonight. His gaze drifted over the room, landing on Rev, who was chatting with some friends near the fireplace. Rev had always been the more outgoing one between the two, a natural in social situations. Boe, on the other hand, was more comfortable with quiet moments, thinking things through in solitude. But today, he couldn't stop thinking about what lay ahead.
The conversation earlier that day still lingered in his thoughts, like a question without an answer. Could he really leave his hometown? Johto was so far away, and the idea of exploring such a distant region—especially after everything that had happened—felt daunting. But the more he thought about it, the more the thought of new challenges and new Pokémon began to tug at him.
Boe couldn't shake the memory of Professor Juniper's words.
"You okay, Boe?" a familiar voice pulled him from his thoughts.
He turned to find Zane, leaning against the wall with a drink in hand. His childhood friend had always been a bit quieter, more logical. He thought things through and never rushed into anything. His black hair was buzzed short, and his brown eyes always seemed to hold a spark of curiosity.
"I'm just thinking," Boe said, rubbing the back of his neck. "About the whole Johto thing."
Zane raised an eyebrow. "Johto... isn't that where all the Team Rocket trouble happened a few years back? I mean, wasn't that a big deal?"
Boe nodded, trying to hide the tension in his chest. "It was. Team Rocket was involved in some serious crimes in Johto, but that's all in the past now. The region's doing a lot better. And Johto's full of opportunities." He paused, rubbing his chin. "But it's so far away…"
Zane raised an eyebrow. "So, what's the problem?"
Boe sighed, a cloud of doubt hanging over him. "I don't know... I've been with my Pokémon for so long. The thought of being away from them for that long... it's scary."
Zane chuckled, shaking his head. "Man, it's Johto, not the end of the world. Your Pokémon will be fine. You're just talking about a trip. You'll come back."
Boe hesitated, glancing over at Rev, who was still chatting nearby. Rev had always been the more confident of the two, always looking ahead with that determined spark in his eyes. And Boe? He was still trying to figure it out.
"You're right, I guess," Boe muttered, still unsure. "It's just... I've never been away from them for that long."
Rev overheard the conversation and made his way over, his usual confident smile playing at the corner of his mouth. "Don't worry, Boe. Even if we're far away, they'll be in good hands at the lab. They won't be gone forever. And besides, it'll be an adventure, right?"
Boe met his older brother's gaze, appreciating the support, though still uncertain. "I know, I just... I don't know. I've never been away from them for that long."
Zane, who had been quietly observing the back-and-forth, now stepped forward with an idea. "Hey, what about me? Can I come too?"
Boe blinked, a little surprised. "You? You want to go to Johto?"
Zane shrugged with a grin. "Why not? You two are going, right? Why should I be left out again after you traveled all of Unova without me!"
Rev crossed his arms, eyeing Zane, "You really? Aren't you invaluable at your family restaurant?"
Zane shrugged again, unfazed by Rev's teasing. "Look, I wanted out of that place for forever now. If I leave the country, how can they stop me?"
Boe stared at Zane for a long moment, then glanced at Rev. He didn't want to go alone, and the idea of Zane coming along didn't sound so bad. Besides, Zane always made things more interesting.
"Alright," Boe said with a small smile. "It'll be nice to have you along. I think we could all use a fresh start in Johto."
"Now we're talking!" Zane grinned, slapping Boe on the back. "This is going to be great!"
As the countdown to midnight began, the room erupted in cheers. Boe felt a spark of excitement that hadn't been there before. With Zane, Rev, and his Pokémon by his side, maybe Johto wasn't so far away after all. The New Year was just beginning, and so was the adventure.
The cold winter air nipped at their faces as Boe, Zane, and Rev stood in the Aspertia City Airport terminal, surrounded by the hum of travelers and the soft whispers of flight announcements. Snowflakes drifted outside the windows, adding to the chill of January. The trio stood near the gate, each lost in their own thoughts as the reality of their departure began to settle in.
Boe shifted his weight, his backpack slung over his shoulder. The excitement he'd felt days ago had been replaced with uncertainty. Johto—his destination—felt so distant, and the idea of leaving Unova for an extended period now seemed more daunting than he'd expected.
"Can't believe it's really happening," Rev said, his confident smile never wavering. He had his hands in his jacket pockets, looking as relaxed as ever. "This is the start of something big."
Zane, oddly quiet all morning, shifted his weight. His usual easygoing demeanor was replaced by an air of restraint, though he tried to cover it with a nonchalant shrug. His crumpled jacket suggested he hadn't given much thought to the trip, but his eyes betrayed him—there was something more than excitement in them.
"Hey, Boe," Zane said, his voice softer than usual, "you think your family's gonna be okay with you leaving for so long?"
Boe glanced at him, surprised by the concern. "They're supportive. My mom's a little worried about the distance, but Dad's excited for me. They know I need this."
Zane chuckled, though there was a trace of sadness in his eyes. "My family... they're probably still wondering why I didn't tell them about this trip." He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "I didn't want to tell them. I knew they'd try to stop me. They don't think I'm ready for something like this." His voice trailed off, quiet but full of frustration.
Boe tilted his head, sensing the unease in his friend. "You didn't tell them? Your parents?"
Zane grimaced. "Nah. If I told them, they'd never let me go. I figured if I just slipped out, I wouldn't have to deal with their nagging. I mean, I'm 15. I can make my own decisions, right?" His voice faltered, as if he were unsure of that answer.
"Zane…" Rev spoke up then, his tone gentle but understanding. "You should tell them when you get there. It's gonna be a shock, but it might be better than letting them stew on it." He didn't push the issue, but his words carried weight.
Zane grimaced but nodded. "I'll call when we land. I guess that's all I can do."
Before they could say more, Boe and Rev's parents appeared in the terminal, stepping in with their youngest son, Anon, bundled up in a warm coat. Boe's mom, Lena, smiled brightly, her eyes sparkling with pride. His dad, Arlo, walked over with a firm handshake.
"Ready to go, son?" Arlo asked, giving Boe's hand a firm shake.
Boe returned the handshake. "Yeah, I think so."
Lena wrapped Boe in a tight hug, her eyes a little misty. "I'm so proud of you, Boe. We're going to miss you, but this is what you've been working toward. I'm sure Johto will be everything you hope for."
Boe squeezed his mom's shoulders, feeling the warmth of her embrace. "I'll miss you too, Mom. But I'll send postcards."
Rev stepped forward, hugging his parents. "Thanks for everything, Mom, Dad. Don't worry—I'll keep an eye on these two."
"Stay safe, Rev," Arlo said with a nod. "Make sure he stays out of trouble."
"I'll try my best," Rev grinned with a playful wink.
Zane, still standing off to the side, took a deep breath. Boe noticed the way his posture was stiffer than usual. Zane's parents weren't there to send him off. He'd kept the trip a secret, and now the weight of that decision was clear in his eyes.
Zane gave Boe's parents a brief nod but didn't offer much else. He turned to Boe, his voice low. "I'll call when we land, like I said."
Boe offered a small smile. "You'll be fine, Zane. Don't worry about it."
The overhead announcement echoed through the terminal, signaling that it was time to board. Boe gave his family one last look, feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension.
"Well, here we go," Boe said, adjusting his backpack.
Rev gave him a light shove toward the gate. "No turning back now, buddy."
With one last glance at his parents and little brother, Boe joined Rev and Zane as they headed for the plane. Boe took a deep breath, the cold air filling his lungs. The weight of the new year settled over him. They were about to take their first steps toward Johto, a region full of new possibilities.
And though the journey ahead was uncertain, Boe couldn't help but feel the thrill of it all. The adventure was just beginning.
