Max Goof was with his school mates from Spoonerville High School in a yellow school bus on a very, cold snowy day in January 1996. They were all going to the very high and very strong Spoonerville Mountains, which was a very popular destination for skiing, snowboarding, sledging and snow tubing among the many awesome snow sports during the snowy winters of Spoonerville and that was where the popular and vast Spoonerville Ski Resort was, so this was the perfect destination and time for Spoonerville High School to do their school skiing trip.
And no one was more excited about this skiing trip than Max was because he loved doing snow sports. The only snow sport he wasn't very good at and didn't really care about was ice skating because he was too clumsy and he always kept falling down every time he tried very hard to do it and everyone that kept seeing him fall down always laughed at him. He had already done his favorite snow sports plenty of times this winter ever since Spoonerville first got covered up with snow early in December 1995, but being the snow sports enthusiast and expert he was, he just couldn't get enough of them and he was looking forward to doing them again on this school ski trip and he just knew it was going to be special; he could just feel it in his gut.
During the bus ride, Max sat next to his best friend PJ. Their other best friend Bobby was sitting next to his girlfriend Stacey on the seats behind them. Sitting in the two seats in front of Max and PJ were two of the school's most popular students ever. One of them was the handsome, muscular Chad and the other one was the stunningly beautiful Lisa.
Max always had a crush on Lisa ever since his very first day at Spoonerville High School in September 1994, which was when he first laid eyes on her for the very first time in his life. It was her beautiful long, blonde hair, her gorgeous, tanned skin and everything she wore, especially her cropped black shirt, her ripped blue jeans and her golden earrings, that made him develop a massive crush on her. Every day at school, whenever she would walk around the school, it was like how a model would walk around on a catwalk. Actually, it was more like a supermodel. Every night, Max would always have dreams of dating Lisa and even have a few dreams of marrying her and having kids with her.
"Give it up, Max."
Max quickly snapped out of his dream zone and turned to face PJ. "What, Peej? What did you say?"
"I said, 'Give it up, Max'. You know you don't stand a chance with Lisa."
"Well, I can still dream, can't I?"
Deep down, Max always knew he never had much chance to speak to a girl like Lisa, let alone date her. Due to her very beautiful looks, she was super popular at the school, whereas Max wasn't popular at all, neither with students nor teachers. He was a C student and the only friends he had were PJ, Bobby and Stacey. He couldn't be more unpopular if he tried.
As if Max didn't have enough problems in his life already, with losing his mom when he was only one year old, not doing very well at school, despite his very best efforts, and not having a lot of friends, for some reason he couldn't work out, he was a very easy target for bullying by almost everyone, both at school and outside it. He always had been since he started day care and, even now that he was a teenager, nothing changed that, no matter what he did. He was very grateful to have PJ, Bobby and Stacey as his friends and he did love his dad Goofy, but his lack of being popular, no matter how hard he tried to fit in with everyone and do his very best in everything he did, only made his lack of self-confidence increase more than it needed to and he wondered why he was born in the first place and he wondered if this was what it was going to be for the rest of his life.
Lisa, on the other hand, was super popular with the students, but she certainly wasn't popular with the teachers. While Max was at least a C student, Lisa was known as an E student and this year she had to do the Eleventh Grade again, the grade that was above the one Max was in. Not to mention Lisa was known to be a high school diva and wasn't afraid to be one and that never impressed the teachers at all, especially Principal Mazur, and not even someone like Max who had a massive crush on her could ever deny she was.
As super popular as Lisa was, she wasn't the most popular girl at Spoonerville High School. That honor went to Bobby's girlfriend Stacey. Despite being a nerd with glasses and braces, Stacey was not only the most popular girl in the whole school, to all students, all teachers and the rest of the school staff, but she was the school's student body's president and had been since the Ninth Grade and continued to hold the rank in the Tenth Grade, successfully beating other students in grades above and below her. Stacey was beautiful in her own way, even with her glasses and braces, and she was very smart, funny, social, had great leadership skills and knew how to treat everyone with respect, whether they were popular or not, and hosted awesome parties at her house and would invite every one of her school mates. Max was glad that he had one friend that was high on the school's food chain. If Lisa became the student body's president, she would expect to be treated not like a princess, not like a queen, not like an empress, not even like a goddess, but someone like Gaia, the mother of the Greek Titans that came before Zeus and the other Greek Gods. That was the main difference between Lisa and Stacey. They both knew they were very popular, but whereas Lisa tried to use her popularity to get her way and be worshipped, Stacey would use her popularity to help the whole school be the best school it could be and help everyone, whether they be students, teachers or other members of staff, feel special and feel what they did mattered to the school and themselves.
Despite all of Lisa's flaws, Max never stopped dreaming about her and still wanted a chance to speak with her. The only reason he didn't was because he was too shy to do so and he still would be even if she wasn't the popular high school diva she was. He kept thinking that she wouldn't even want to be his friend at all, let alone his girlfriend, and she would only avoid him like the plague, which a lot of other students did. Max never forgot that Lisa already had a boyfriend and that was Chad, the guy who she was sitting next to. Chad was nothing more than an idiot, whose only two qualities he had was that he was very handsome and very strong. Like his girlfriend Lisa, he was held back in the Eleventh Grade as well. Even a blind person could easily see that these two had great chemistry between each other.
Despite the fact he still never said a single word to her, Max had hoped that Lisa at least noticed him during this school year and the last one before it, such as all the basketball games he played in or when he starred in last year's production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat where he played Joseph's brother Levi and the Butler or when he and the whole school attended Stacey's party in Summer 1995 where they all watched Powerline's iconic concert show in Los Angeles on TV. Max did notice that Lisa attended to watch most of the basketball games he played in and the show the school did last year, but she always came with Chad. Max never knew why. Chad never played in any of the sport teams and Lisa wasn't on the cheerleading team and neither of them acted in any drama production. Maybe it was because some of their friends were on the basketball team or were on the cheerleading team or were acting in the show. During Stacey's party last year, Max did think of trying to talk to Lisa, but he was still too nervous to talk to her and Chad almost always being with her certainly didn't help with his confidence at all. Max was even too shy to speak to any girl at all, except his friend Stacey, and he knew that he was so unpopular that even the unpopular girls at school wouldn't give him a chance, so he never bothered trying to seek a relationship with another girl.
But despite everything, Max still hoped he would be able to start to get her to notice him more, like when he would play more basketball games this year or when he would act in this year's school play, which was Anything Goes and he earned the role of Billy Crocker.
