Chapter One: The First World,
Big Trouble in Little China Part 1
I looked over at the driver who I knew was Jack Burton my CDL instructor, who was getting paid to do this by my parents. I was riding shotgun in the cab as we rolled into San Francisco with my head already pounding due to the new information that I had learned. I mentally tried to recall everything that I knew about this world and the answer was less than I cared for. I did not know where the bad guys were, but I did know who they were as I remembered that Jack would be the one to kill Lo Pan and help with ending the three storms.
My reminiscing was interrupted by the air horn of the Porkchop Express while Jack drove us into the market for our delivery. I had my cash supply in my pocket that I had purchased from the Jumpchain, so I was not too worried about getting some food for myself in this market. I quickly grabbed some food before crawling back into the truck cab to eat before I would catch some shut eye while Jack gambled the night away. I had no plans to get involved in wasting money since I had better things to do like sleep as if I remember correctly the next few days would be long and more than a little annoying. My sleep was decently comfortable in the bunk behind the seats while Jack gambled the night away.
I wake to Jack firing the truck up with Wang climbing into the passenger seat. Sitting up I grown before the pair in the front take notice of me being inside the truck cab. "So I take it this is Wang the restraint owner you are always talking about?" I ask as the pair finally realize I am in the back.
Jack lets out a chuckle before answering my inquiry. "Yeah Lushan this is Wang Chi he owns Dragon of the Black Pool a decent place for Chinese food around here and he owes me one thousand, one hundred and forty-eight dollars, cash times two. I am not letting him out of my sight until I get that money, but before that can happen we need to go pick up his girl from the airport."
With that I let out a sigh as Wang began to wax poetically about his fiancée and her own jade green eyes. Jack, who was coming down from his night of drinking drove the truck as even though I knew how to drive Jack was not one to let me drive unless he had no choice.
It was as the truck neared the airport that my situation finally hit me. I was never going to get to see my family or friends ever again. I closed my eyes and took some calming breaths while trying to keep myself under control. Eventually Jack parked the Porkchop Express in the airport parking garage as I was able to finally bring myself back to an even keel and focus on the here and now. I silently the followed the unusual friends into the arrival area of the airport since I had nothing better to do. I already knew that I was not going to stop the Lord's of Death as I needed them to take Miao Yin so that I did not need to kill Egg Shen in order to leave this world.
I stood back as the thugs came into the waiting area of the airport. I had to hold in my chuckles as Jack tried and failed to flirt with Gracie Law as she waited on the girl she was picking up. Her stepping away almost had me busting my gut as the older woman was clearly interested in what Jack had accidentally offered. Even though I was not going to stop them I did step up when the Lord's of Death started to move.
My lack of true martial arts training showed as I attempted to use the grapples of force control maneuvers that I had learned as a hospital security guard in my last life. As I grabbed one of the thugs while Jack fought with a second Miao Yin was being pulled by the third who had kicked Wang out of his way. My opponent took advantage of me being distracted by checking over my comrades in order to sucker punch me in the face. Let me tell you something if you are not ready for it and experienced with taking hits then getting punched in the face will cause a person a great deal of pain and take them out of a fight temporarily.
Once I was able to see clearly again after the punch to my face I had to chase after Jack and Wang in order to not get left behind at the airport. I was in time to see the muscle car speeding away as I ran to the truck quickly climbing in and I grabbed the spare keys before cranking up the engine. I pulled up allowing Jack and Wang to climb into the cab before slamming the throttle and peeling out of the parking deck. This one time Jack is not complaining about me driving ad I put my new perk in vehicle operation skill to use. I was able to get us closer to the Lord's of Death than Jack was able to in the movies, but the truck is no where as fast or maneuverable as the sports car that the gang bangers are driving.
Once we were back in Chinatown I followed Wang's instructions and found ourselves in the alley as the funeral procession came toward us. I knew that this was too early for me to do anything that would drastically change the plot of the way the movie would have gone. I was looking around afraid that I would not be able to do anything about the battle that was about to happen. I let out a sigh as the three of us in the truck watched the two gangs battle each other until the three storms showed up. I ducked down along with the friends that were in the truck cab with me until Want told me to the gas which I did as I wanted nothing to do with the storms yet.
I don't mind as the storms avoid me I see Lo Pan appear before us and slip under the truck before reforming as I slam on the brakes and come to a stop before I would have plowed into the wall at the turn of the alley. We all poured out of the truck but not before I cut it off and grabbed the keys. As Lo Pan turned towards us as I went to check the front of the truck for damage. Lo Pan started making some noise catching Jack's attention as Wang came around the front of the truck pulling me towards Jack. When we got to him it was extra bright as Lo Pan seemed to be producing some kind of pale blue light. Wang told us not to look only for Jack to respond that it was too late. I grabbed Jack's left arm as Wang grabbed his right arm and led us away from the dark sorcerer. After helping splash some of the runoff rainwater from a puddle in the alley into Jack's face he regained his ability to see once again.
Once we had recovered from the shock of what had happened we started to move in order to get clear of the ongoing battle in the gang war only to run into members of the Lord's of Death. What made running into them worse is that they knew who Wang was and made no secret in that fact as they advanced on us. Knowing that we had no chance to escape even if we beat the group that was in front of us because the noise would draw the attention of the Wing Kong and possibly the three storms which at this point would mean our deaths. Wang led Jack and I back past the Wing Kong decimating the Chang Sing with the help of the Three Storms and into what appeared to be an abandoned basement. I covered Jack's mouth so that Wang did not need to while we once again tried to recover our breaths.
We did not have long as after one of the Chang Sing members came over motioning us to stay quiet we heard the door upstairs being kicked in. A not nearly silent enough curse left Jack's mouth only to be mirrored by Wang and we dove for the two tunnels filled with trash. I was the last one into the tunnels and had to wait for Jack to strip off his fleece jacket before we made it to a tenuously safe location of another alley.
Jack had clearly had enough as he started to rant about everything he had experienced in the last hour. I myself had been expecting something like this to happen due to my outside world knowledge so I was better able to handle everything going on. Even with not remembering my old name now that I have a lifetime of memories as Lushan and that is the name I am going to use as I move on from this world in a few days. With that decision mentally made I allow myself to be led to the Black Dragon the restaurant that Wang owns. Jack continued to complain about his truck being taken from him the whole way we three walked the streets of Chinatown towards the restaurant. Even as I tried to ignore the way he started to blame me for not even trying to make the turn that would have led us to the Lord's of Death. I eventually snarked back by asking how his eyes were as he could not have helped but look into the light that was coming out of another man's mouth. My snark was enough to get the slightly inebriated truck driver to back off of me for the moment even as we both stank to high heaven right now.
Once we made it to the Black Dragon Jack proceeded to hog the phone after taking a shower in order to try to get in contact with his insurance company. Knowing that it was useless I waited until the only white person to finish as he was my trainer and as such had the seniority to get ahead of me for a shower before taking one of my own even though I knew that it would not help me smell any better. After my shower I came down to find that Jack was still on the phone and the maître d had not shown up yet. I decided to just stop and lean on the wall across the room from where Jack was on the phone as I had little to contribute to the conversations that were happening before me. Just listening to Jack rant at the insurance agent made a smile form on my face which lasted until Eddie Lee the maître d showed up being the bearer of bad news at least in Jack's opinion. He told Jack that the Lord's of Death had stolen the truck after we had left what turned out to be a gang war that had been going on for centuries.
