A/N: A random little bit of angst. I'm not sure I've written this scenario before (but it's quite possible). I'm working on some of my ongoing fics, but I keep running out of time to finish a chapter.

"Oh my god, why do people always have to shoot at us!" Deeks groaned, throwing himself behind a butcher block that wasn't nearly big enough to cover him as a spray of bullets rips into the wood. He flinches back, waits a few seconds, then pokes his head out again to return fire. Kensi does the same from behind the chair she's hidden behind.

After a few more exchanges, their opponent gets cocky, and while Deeks distracts him, Kensi shoots the man. As she stands to go check him and secure his weapon, Deeks shouts her name, launching himself across the room. She barely has time to turn her face to the side before Deeks slams her to the floor, a bullet cutting through the space she'd occupied moments before.

Rolling onto his back, Deeks aims and fires, hitting the second man who had appeared from the back of the house squarely in the chest.

"Are you ok?" Deeks asks, getting to his knees. She nods once, a little stunned, from impacting with the ground and another near miss. He holds out his hand, and she takes it, wincing as he helps her sit up.

"Yeah. I think I'm going to have a really big bruise, but I'm ok," she answers. Her hips already aches, but Deeks doesn't need to know that. "Thanks. That was an impressive shot from that angle."

"Well, I didn't want you to hit me again," Deeks says flippantly, his upper lip quirked in a smirk, but Kensi stills. Shaking debris out of his hair, he stands, heading over to check the two gunmen.

She remains on the floor, frozen by a moment she'd all but forgotten. In an instant, she's back to a little over two years ago.

A gun pressed into her shoulder while a man wrapped his arm around her neck. She'd demanded Deeks to shoot the man, but he hadn't. She remembers the rage that had flashed through her when their bag guy escaped and when Deeks insisted he didn't have the shot, that anger had welled over, and she punched him.

With everything that happened after that day, Kensi doesn't know if she's thought of that moment since then. Clearly Deeks has thought for him to bring it up out of the blue.

It wasn't one of her "normal" punches or taps to the arm, that probably hurt, but didn't leave any lasting damage. She'd left him bleeding that day, feeling totally justified in her actions.

"Hey baby, you ok?" Deeks is suddenly in front of her again, brows lowered in concern. "Did you bump your head? You went down pretty hard." He winces apologetically, and Kensi's hit with a wave of guilt at his concern.

"I'm fine," she insists, hastily pushing herself up.

"Ok." He gives her a final look, presumably to assure himself that she's not concealing some life-threatening injury, then grabs his cell. "I'm gonna call this in."

As he dials the number, Kensi's stomach clenches with the knowledge that no matter what she's done, Deeks would never do anything to intentionally hurt her. She can't say the same.

A/N: I know this was a massive issue when "Frozen Lake" first aired. I'm also sure there's many stories that address it which my sieve-like memory has forgotten.
