Saturday, just after Ariana left Max at the dorm.
"Hey, boss. Are you busy?" Ariana said as she had called her boss.
"Not really." Arianas boss said. "Is something wrong?" he asked.
"I called my cousin this morning, you know, Max. She who lives in Arcadia Bay." Ariana said as she kept walking towards her car.
"Oh, yeah, you mentioned that you would. How is she?" he asked again.
"Not too good I'm afraid." Ariana said. "When I called her this morning, she didn't sound good." She continued.
"Did something happen to her?" Her boss asked with concern in his voice since he knew how much Ariana loves her cousin.
"You could say that. She asked me to bring something to collect tests samples with me." Ariana said. "I have collected some samples that will need to be analysed as soon as possible." She continued. "Can I swing by or are your wife super busy?" she asked her boss.
"I'll put her on the phone with you, hang on for a moment." He said with a heavy sigh. "Honey, could you come to the phone. Ariana needs to have a word with you." Ariana could hear her boss yell for his wife. "Here she comes." He said after a moment.
"Hey Ariana, how's my favourite officer doing?" Mrs. Milton said to Ariana as she heard a grunt in the background. "Oh, shush Jeff." She heard Mrs. Milton tell her husband before she focused on Ariana again. "What can I do for you sweety." She continued making Ariana smile at the nickname.
"Are you busy or could you help me with some samples I have collected?" Ariana asked.
"For you, I'm never too busy." Mrs. Milton said before shushing her husband again. "It's very clear who wears the pants between the two." Ariana thought as she listened to her boss and his wife have a quiet argument, which Mrs. Milton won since she invited Ariana to come by whenever she pleased.
After hanging up, Ariana drove off. Just as she left the parking area, Ariana saw a couple making out. When she passed them, she realised that it was the boy who used to hang around her cousin. "Well, he seems to have gotten over the fact that Max had rejected him." Ariana thought as she drove on. "Hopefully he and Max can repair their friendship. It's clear that Max misses her friend." She continued to think.
Arriving at her boss house she was greeted by his wife. Dressed in her usual attire when she and Ariana meet up for various things, today was no exception.
"Do you think they'll let you into the lab dressed like that?" Ariana asked as she gave her friend and mentor a hug.
"If they want to keep their jobs, they will." Mrs. Milton said as they walked back to Arianas car. "So, have you got the goods?" she asked once they were in the car, trying to sound like a thug doing business.
Ariana laughed hard enough to draw a few tears down her cheeks. "It's in the bag in the backseat. But I also need you to take a sample off my shirt, someone spilled something on it." She finally replied once she got herself under control. "You need to stop making me laugh like that. One of these days I'm going to pee myself from laughing so hard." Ariana said as she drove off to the lab. Having a friend that work as a head lab technician at a crime lab sure had its benefits.
Once they got to the lab, Ariana took off her shirt and put on a spare that her friend let her borrow that she always keeps around. They then scrubbed in after getting the proper equipment on. Ariana remembered the first time she came here; she had walked into one of the labs without any safety equipment on or scrubbed in. This had earned her a scolding of a lifetime from her friend. Ariana felt lucky that her friend hadn't banned her from ever entering the lab again.
Taking out the samples Ariana brought, the two of them set to work. Ariana mostly arranging everything her friend need while her friend did the actual testing. Once everything was sorted and had been put into the analyser they sat down and waited for the results.
"So, care to tell me what sort of results I'm to expect from these samples." Arianas friend asked.
"Some kind of drug most likely." Ariana said as she breathed a sigh. "I called my cousin this morning and she didn't sound too good. She's the one who asked me to take the samples." Ariana said. "I just hope it's nothing too serious." She said.
"There were two sets of samples." Mrs. Milton pointed out.
"Yeah, one is from Max and the other is from her teacher Mr. Jefferson." Ariana said and at her friends confused face she quickly added that they had woken up in bed together naked and most likely had sex under the influence of something. "I gave her the pill." Ariana said as she turned to her friend.
"But?" Her friend asked, sensing that there was something else.
"I don't know, I've just got this feeling that the pill won't work. She told me that she had already ovulated just the day or two before having this incident." Ariana said as she scratched her forehead. "I should probably expect her to call me in a few weeks' time." Ariana said as the analyser beeped signalling that the tests are done.
"Well, either way, she can always have it aborted." Mrs. Milton said. "Can't imagine having a kid at such a young age." She continued as she picked up the results before taking them over to her computer to enter them.
"Hm." Mrs. Milton said as she looked at the results on her screen.
"What is it?" Ariana asked.
"That's weird, it says here that the drug found in your cousin's test is a match to another we did earlier this week. But I can't see why that would be." Mrs. Milton said as she showed Ariana the screen.
"Jane Doe." Ariana said. "Have you got any idea of who this woman is?" she asked looking at her friend.
"No and we are still waiting for the dental records. We sent a print of the teeth to the main centre for all dental prints in the state, they should hopefully be with us on Monday." Mrs. Milton said.
"And what about the other test?" Ariana asked.
"Oh, that one contained a mix between GHB and epimedium." Mrs. Milton said. "Poor guy, he must have been like a ravaging beast." She continued. "Did your cousin seem alright when you saw her?" she asked Ariana.
"Mostly. Why do you ask?" Ariana said.
"Well, your cousin must have a lot of stamina or a high pain tolerance." Mrs. Milton said. "Had that been me and I would have been ravaged by someone who was under the influence of this combination, I probably would not have been able to move at all the next day." She continued. "But then again, she too was drugged, so maybe that was a blessing in disguise." She said as she printed the results for Ariana to bring with her, along with the results from the Jane Doe. "And the results from the sample I took off your shirt is the same as what was in Mr. Jeffersons samples." She said as she handed Ariana the last result back.
"So, what are you thinking?" Mrs. Milton said as she observed her.
"Would you think that a student would intentionally drug a teacher?" Ariana asked her friend after a moment of silence.
"It depends, is the teacher hot?" Mrs. Milton asked wiggling her eyebrows.
"Well, he's not bad looking." Ariana said.
"Might be worth for you to look into then." Mrs. Milton said. "How is your search for those missing girls going?" she asked to change to topic.
"Not good, it's like I've been stuck in the same place for ages." Ariana said as they started to make their way out from the lab and building.
"Something will come up sooner or later." Mrs. Milton said. "It always does." She continued and when they said their goodbyes Mrs. Milton said that she would contact Ariana once she had the dental records from the Jane Doe.
