Jolie widened her dark red eyes before asking him. "Isn't she your enemy? Why does it matter that her ashes have been stolen? If I were you, it wouldn't be my concern."
"Easy for you to say!" Inuyasha barked which made Jolie audibly flinch.
Inuyasha turned to the left and said "I-It's complicated alright?"
"Hmph." Jolie turned to the right and crossed her arms.
A sudden realization came to her, and she breathed in and out before closing her eyes. "I concede that if I were you and my past enemy's spirit could potentially be summoned or be revived, I would be worried. I wouldn't want to encounter them again so I would do my best to prevent that from happening."
Inuyasha turned to face her again. "What?! You think Urasue could summon Kikyō's spirit or revive her with her ashes?"
Jolie looked at him. "It's just a theory but my mother is a dark arts practitioner so I'm aware of some of the practices. My mother said reviving the dead is a taboo art and one she wouldn't ever risk using. Necromancy is the practice of communicating with the dead by calling upon their spirit."
Inuyasha furrowed his brows in concern before telling Jolie. "Let's get some rest."
Jolie nodded but as she lay on her side, she was painfully aware that Inuyasha, a man, was in the same proximity as her. She turned in the other direction.
Inuyasha crossed his legs and stuffed his arms in his sleeves as he closed his eyes. It made her wonder how someone could sleep like that? Maybe if someone was sitting in a chair but wouldn't his legs fall asleep? When his eyes were closed, she noted that he had eyelid creases that tended to disappear.
Jolie thought "Goodness, why are his eyelashes so long? I suppose that's part of the reason why he's so handsome."
She blushed at the thought.
Inuyasha opened his eyes. "Can't sleep?"
Jolie's blush darkened, hoping that Inuyasha didn't catch her noticing his sleeping face.
"I… I can't, you're a man and we're sleeping in the same place!"
Inuyasha widened his golden amber eyes. Was she so utterly conscious of the fact that he was male?
"Again, about us being unmarried and being together?!"
Jolie sat up. "Yes! I know you don't care and there aren't others who care but I do!"
She put her hand over her chest. "It's simply indecent!"
"Keh. Says the woman who didn't hesitate to kiss me and insists on marrying a nobleman."
Jolie held her knees as she blushed and averted her gaze. "I'm aware I wasted my first kiss on you out of desperation."
Inuyasha widened his eyes, blushing. He was her first kiss?
"It's true, I always told myself if I were to ever get married, I want to be married to a high-ranking nobleman. Most peasant men are boorish and brainless."
Inuyasha smirked. "Keh. You're so arrogant and act so proper even though I'm sure you're no princess yourself."
Jolie leaned her head forward. "I won't deny I hold myself in high regard. As for my mannerisms, my late father served in a noble's court and my mother was raised as a princess even though my sister and I live as peasants."
Inuyasha raised his brows, surprised by Jolie's noble lineage even though she had no claim to it just as he did with his.
Jolie firmly replied. "I'm aware the villagers back home say I act like the Queen of France instead of the faceless, no account I am, and I care not."
His right dog ear twitched before he scrunched up his brows leaning in closer. "Faceless, no account?"
"Well, back home, I had to wear my hood outside of my house lest the villagers mistake me for a witch or demon because of my red eyes." Jolie demonstrated by wearing her gray hood which covered her crimson eyes before taking it off.
Jolie continued speaking in her casual tone. "Back home, people fear twins as they think they are the spawn of the devil, so they assumed that I was the cursed, ugly twin sister while Belle was beloved for her beauty and kindness."
Inuyasha hunched down, dumbfounded. "What the hell?"
He straightened his back. "How the hell are twins "spawn of the devil"? And they thought you were ugly just cause' you covered your eyes?"
He scoffed. "That's ridiculous."
"Humans are ignoramuses. They assume twins are spawn of the devil because the resemblance is uncanny, I suppose. A woman who carries twins is assumed to be an adulterer or a witch. My mother is a dark arts practitioner but she's no adulterer."
"Were you… Ever jealous of your sister because she was beloved by our village?"
"It's not just our village. Her name, "Belle" means "beauty" so you can tell that Mother preferred her over me for having the same eye color as her whereas my name just means "pretty", not that I resent my name or anything like that nor do I envy her. She's kind and sweet. It's better for one twin to be loved than both be hated. …The first Lunar Bat Immortals were cursed by owl spirit brothers that one sister would put herself first and could never coexist with the other and if I were to envy her, the curse would make me end her, but I love Belle, I have no desire to end my other self."
Inuyasha couldn't help but feel strangely jealous at how much Jolie loved her sister unconditionally.
Jolie looked at the moon wistfully. "But since I washed up here, I'll probably never see her again."
His heart oddly ached when she spoke in a somber tone about never seeing her sister again and looked at the moon with such longing.
Jolie looked down at the ground, surprisingly smiling. "I will concede your point that I am childish. When Belle and I were little and played pretend, she would always be the princess and I would be the knight, the prince."
She softly laughed as she leaned her cheek against a palm. "The story my mother told me had two princes waking up the two princesses with True Love's Kiss. Maybe that's part of why I didn't hesitate to kiss you aside from having foolish hope."
Knowing that fact made her seem more endearing.
"Is there a reason why you're so obsessed with marrying a nobleman aside from believing in fairytales and comfort?"
Jolie hunched down, her cheek still in her palm. "Well…You know my parents have some connections with nobility. Their former lives seemed so grand, so opulent. Noblemen must be refined and of high character and to want for nothing. It must certainly be more than the provincial life I've been living."
Inuyasha chuckled. "I see. So, you can be spoiled and have everything you want. You're such a dreamer, you know that?"
Jolie blinked as she gazed up at the moon. "Even so, a girl can dream, can't she?"
"So, let's say if I was a nobleman, you'd still wanna marry me, wouldn't you?"
Jolie straightened her back. "What do you mean?"
He smirked. "My old man was a demon lord, and my mother was a human princess."
Inuyasha had a stern look at the distance. "Unfortunately for you, my parents died a long time ago and it's not like I could claim a title being a half demon and all."
He bitterly smiled. "It's ironic right? Us having noble backgrounds but we've got nothing to show for it."
Jolie pensively nodded.
"Anyways even if you're uncomfortable with traveling with me cause' we're unmarried and all, it's not smart to be married to a half demon. I don't belong anywhere, and humans and demons alike have tried to kill me. Sticking together is just for your protection." Inuyasha's voice became sterner.
Jolie gave a sad smile. "I don't belong in this country and back in France, I've only ever belonged inside my home with my mother and sister. People will judge me for my red eyes as well. Even if I can't fight like you, I can at least suck their blood."
Inuyasha surprisingly found himself snorting at her quip.
"You're more handsome than any other human man I've laid eyes on. You can at least protect me, even if you are boorish, and those are decent qualities to have in a husband, and you do have noble lineage at least."
Inuyasha scoffed and turned away from her in an attempt to hide his blush before looking back at her. "So, what, qualities you look for in a husband are… Looks, character, being able to protect you, and what?"
Jolie smiled. "I prefer a man with intellect."
Inuyasha had a smug expression with his eyes closed and arms tucked into his sleeves. "I'm no idiot, I'll have you know."
"We'll see about that."
Inuyasha briefly looked annoyed as he hunched up before relaxing and resuming his stern expression. "Yeah, we can discuss that later. For now, try to get some sleep alright?"
Jolie lay on her side then closed her eyes. "Good night Inuyasha."
Soon after, he heard her breathing changed into a certain rhythm.
"Yeah…"
Inuyasha walked closer to her before kneeling to see that her breathing deepened.
"Heh. She made a big deal about sleeping near a man who she's not married to but she's out like a light. She was probably really tired."
He then crossed his legs and stuffed his arms after sitting a distance away from her and fell asleep soon after.
Once again thank to you to my lovely beta xgengen for going over this fic.
pixwritesthething / thathanyouinuyasha on tumblr's characterization for Inuyasha inspired me on how to describe his struggles as a half demon.
Also yeah, more fun animated movie quote references!
Peasant men being "boorish and brainless" is from Belle (Reprise) in Disney's Beauty and the Beast
"Acting like the queen of Sheba instead of the nameless, no account you are" from Anastasia got turned into the villagers thinking that Jolie acts like the Queen of France instead of the faceless, no account she is.
In my oc lore with my coauthor cousin - myruby0414, Jolie's cousins, Talia and Aurora, inspired the tales "Talia, Sun, and Moon" and "Sleeping Beauty" and was the story of the Sleeping Beauties her mother told Jolie about.
