Welcome to the world of Pokémon! This world is filled with fantastical creatures known as Pokémon! Red walked out of his home, visiting his friend Blue, ever since they were kids they competed in everything!

To some, like Daisy, Pokémon are pets, though she's Blue's sister, she has taken on the role of a mother by now. With their parents out of the picture and their grandfather always busy, someone had to step up…

Some train Pokémon professionally, Pokémon have a love of combat, and it's customary to bond with your Pokémon by having them engage in battles, even if you aren't a pro trainer yourself… not every trainer makes it big, but those who do are celebrated worldwide!

Red and Blue watched a recording of an old match, Samuel Oak, Blue's grandfather, vs Agatha. Two rivals, fighting for the position of Champion. Nidorino and Gengar are in a fierce battle, Nidorino is suddenly paralyzed by Gengar's tongue! It looks over when Oak reveals his final Pokémon, a little Jigglypuff, it looks so tiny and weak, but it completely no sells the Gengar's toxic tongue, singing the Gengar to sleep and building up momentum as it spins its round body! It crashes into Gengar just as it wakes up! Samuel Oak wins!

The boys cheer! Blue looks up at a trophy on the shelf "Samuel Oak Indigo League Champion", he smiles at it…

Samuel Oak walks in, now looking much older, no longer does he train for battles, he studies Pokémon! Gaining the prestigious title of Kanto's resident professor, a title only given to the current top researcher in Kanto! "Ah, Red! How nice of you to visit! And convenient too, I was already planning on visiting you later today! I have big news for you and my grandson, now what was his name again?" Blue and Samuel laugh, the professor's grandchildren running up to hug him! "Hang on there! Try not to knock me over you two! I haven't hit dementia yet, but I'm still old!"

"What's the news, Professor?" Red asks him "Are we helping you do field research again?"

"Meet me at the lab and I'll tell you! Try to avoid the tall grass, a Pokémon might get scared seeing you in its territory." Oak wanders back

Red and Blue are so excited they race to the lab! Blue gets there first, taunting Red as he arrives! "Jeez! Planned on keeping me waiting any longer?"

Red stands by Blue, they see Oak reach into his bag and put 3 Pokémon on a table "Here's your surprise boys, I have trained 3 Pokémon to potentially be the start to someone else's adventure. In my old age there is much of the world I can't see personally. These are Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle!" Blue steps forward but Oak puts a hand on his shoulder "Blue… I'm afraid you will be going second, patience is an important skill, and you'll need it on your journey."

Blue pouts "Hmph! Alright, gramps! Red! Go pick your Pokémon!"

Red walks up to the table, he looks at the three… Bulbasaur… that would be easy to raise… some say Squirtle makes adventures go by in a breeze… Charmander… they say though the path with her is tough, that it's worth it, he picks up Charmander's Pokéball "Abby! I'll call you Abby!"

Blue didn't take long to consider his choice, he walked right up to Squirtle's Pokéball "Looks a lot stronger than yours Red! But let's prove it! Let's have a battle!"

"Now now, Blue! My lab is hardly a battlefield! Oak insists "We'll take it outside, I'll referee!"

Red didn't seem to know what to do, randomly altering between the two moves Abby knew, "Growl! Uh, Scratch! No, Growl again! What do I do!?"

Blue just kept using Tackle, trying to end the match immediately! Red began to notice Blue's damage output lower, attributing it to Growl, healing Abby with a Potion!

With Sauirtle's attack dropped! Scratches and Tackles were exchanged! Eventually, with Squirtle's defenses weakened, Red's luck paid off, and Oak announced "Squirtle is unable to battle! Red and Charmander win!"

"Unbelievable!" Blue said as he returned Squirtle "I picked the wrong Pokémon!"

"Now now! There's no such thing!" Oak explains "Any Pokémon can be powerful! You didn't lose the battle, Red won it, by trying things and seeing what worked! Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm afraid I didn't just give you Pokémon. I gave you the tools for a quest." He gave each boy a Pokédex "Red, Blue, this device can scan for the location of any Pokémon you've seen. When I was young, I wanted to use it to capture all Pokémon in Kanto… but now I'm too old."

"Leave it to me! I'll borrow a map from Daisy!" Blue walks home

"Thanks, professor." Red walks home himself

"Red, you were out a long time." His mother said as he came home! "Did you get lost watching old battles again?"

"And having my own! Professor Oak surprised me today! My journey begins with this!" He throws a Pokéball on the table, and in a brilliant flash of light, Abby comes out!

"How adorable!" His mom pet the Charmander on the head "I suppose all boys leave home eventually, but since you just had a battle, would you like to rest here?"

"I would…" Red came up to his bedroom, he let Abby sleep with him on his bed, she controlled her tail well enough to not accidentally burn the bed…

While Red won his first battle, it was against someone who didn't have a chance to train… with Abby by his side, the journey is bound to be difficult, but he felt ready.
