In his room in the Pokémon Center, Red thought back at the gym battle… Raichu was fast… he can't set up… "If offense won't work… maybe we need defense!"
He trains against some trainers in the East side of the city, a few youngsters who like defensive Pokémon like Sandshrew have advice, and some engineers who use Electric-types like Magnemite made for good practice. A trio of Gamblers showed off how their Polywags fight Electric-types: They only need to withstand one blow to use Hypnosis, and by the time their foe wakes up it'll be quite weakened!
Red completes his training and we cut to the gym! Raichu is already out, we hear the announcement "A rematch is set between Lt. Surge, The Lightning American and Red from Pallet Town! Select your first Pokémon!"
"Deowzee! Let's go!" Red sent out the little tapir, who was confident for someone who got literally trashed last time!
Surge laughs! "You know the definition of insanity? Trying the same thing over and over expecting the same result! Mega Punch!"
Red hoped for Drowzee to handle it… and he did! "Hypnosis!" Raichu was quickly put to sleep "Confusion!"
Drowzee hit again and again, but as soon as Raichu woke up "Thunderbolt!" Lt. Surge called! Raichu was dizzy and confused, but managed to hit!
The ref raised a flag "Drowzee is unable to battle! Raichu wins!"
"You're up Jas! Wing Attack!"
"Thunderbolt!" Raichu tried to attack the Pidgeotto as soon as it came out but the lightning summoned ended up hitting Raichu! Jas dashed forward, her wing slamming into Raichu! "Thunderbolt!"
"Quick Attack!" Red says! Jas gets the first hit! Raichu shakes off confusion and downs the bird in one blow! "Return…" he recalls Jas
"Pidgeotto is unable to battle!" The ref announced, "Raichu wins!"
"Jay! Let's go! Use Hyper Fang!" Red sends out his Rattata
"Mega Kick!" Raichu tries to do as Surge ordered, but misses! Immediately punished by the bite! "Alright! Let's see it try to dodge a Thunderbolt!"
"Quick Attack!" Jay stuck first, but Raichu struck harder
"Rattata is unable to battle! The winner is Raichu!" Announced the ref
Red saw it… all this chip damage left Raichu weakened, he considered his next move "I don't have any more Quick Attacks… Dux will go down for sure, but Abby has no counter for Thunderbolt…" he suddenly remembers fighting Brock's Onix "I've got it! None of her attacks will reach Raichu! So I'll use Raichu's!"
Red tosses out a Pokéball "Abby! It's all up to you!" Abby stands in front of Raichu "Bide!"
Surge laughs "That pathetic attack! I'll knock down that thing before it can finish! You know what to do!"
Raichu pummels Abby with Thunderbolts until it can barely stand! Then… glows! The flash of light so bright Surge had flashbacks, remembering being hit by a flash grenade in the war! Suddenly, as everyone's vision returned, a flag was raised…
"Raichu is unable to battle! The winner is Red from Pallet Town!" Announced the ref!
Surge walked over, shaking Red's hand "Nice job kid! You had more spark than I thought!" He pulls out the gym badge "As proof of your victory, this is the official Thunder Badge! Now that you've beaten me, your Pokémon are bound to be lightning-fast! Heck, any bird ya train will be strong enough to carry you across the entire region!"
Red's name is added alongside Blue, one of the challengers who've beaten Surge this year!
