A/N-Hi all. Thank you for your patience. I can't say I didn't enjoy writing this chapter. I like seeing things through the eyes of a child, and sometimes that is what a fairytale is, but as adults, we do dream of fairytales, proving they aren't just for children. So now the drama is beginning and those of you taking this ride with me, thank you. I hope you enjoy. I based the chapter on the song "Today was a Fairytale" by Taylor Swift.
Happy reading. Reviews are welcomed and appreciated.
Chapter 11-Today was a Fairytale
"Today was a fairytale
You were the prince
I used to be a damsel in distress
You took me by the hand and picked me up at six
Today was a fairytale" -Lyrics by Taylor Swift
Olivia bolted out of her sound sleep to the sound of a ringing phone. She glanced over to see the time at 6 am. Who the hell was calling her at this time? She looked at her cell phone which wasn't ringing, and realized it was the burner.
She jumped out of bed and sprinted to the kitchen where the phone was lying on the counter. She looked at the display. No ID, but Olivia recognized the 212-area code. It was Edison, and he thinks it's noon time in Paris, that's why he's calling. He's probably on his way to the office, sitting in the back of his town car.
She took a deep breath and hit the accept button. "This is Olivia Pope." She waited. There was silence for about 20 seconds. "Hello, this is Olivia Pope," she said one more time.
"What's going on Olivia? What is this phone number? Why haven't I heard from you in over a week?"
"Hello Edison, I am fine, how are you? Nothing is going on. I am taking a break from work, and I am visiting my mother in Paris. This is an international phone, and I haven't spoken to anyone in a week, except for my friends who you decided to threaten. What is that?"
"You left me no choice. I knew you'd be in contact once I struck below the belt, and now you're on the other end of the phone. I have to admit, they both own lovely properties. I can do so much with it."
"Edison, knock it off, it's me you're after. Stop harassing them, you have me on the phone, what do you want.?"
"I didn't like how it ended the last time I saw you. I want a do over. When are you coming back from Paris?"
"I haven't decided." Liv closed her eyes. "I gave Mr. Harris a tentative resignation. I could be back in three months, or I could never come back. I just need you to tell me you'll leave Harold and Betty alone."
"Fine, the property isn't that spectacular, what do you mean never come back? Mr. Harris isn't going to accept your resignation, you're too valuable."
"If I resign, I resign. I don't know Edison; I am not happy. I just need some time and I am asking you to respect that."
There was a long pause, complete silence. She heard him breathing. "Fine, take your time, but tell me I will at least hear from you once a week."
"Edison, this isn't going anywhere, I already told you that. I don't want a relationship. I just want…."
"WHAT, what do you want Olivia?" She heard the anger and frustration in his voice.
"For the time being, leave my friends alone, and when I decide I want to call you again, I will call you, now please just respect that." She clicked off the phone. That didn't go as planned and she needed Huck to keep more tabs on him. She didn't need any surprises.
She put Edison on the back burner. Not today. Today was the festival, and Liv couldn't wait to go. She felt like a teenager on prom night, a child on Christmas Eve, and a performer in her first dance recital. She had all this excitement, and she couldn't explain it. She was just happy for Fitz.
Fitz was already at the soccer field. Everything was set up. The stage was ready and decorated with characters from famous fairy tales. Fitz looked around. Food vendors were set up. There was a bouncy house, a ball pit, and small carnival rides for the younger children.
There were bumper cars and a Ferris wheel set up for the older kids. Fitz walked around to the three chance games he had them set up. There were toy light sabers, dolls, and stuffed animals as prizes. These were all donations from various stores Fitz had the planning board reach out to. He was satisfied with everything. He couldn't wait to pick up Olivia and bring her over.
"What's this set up for?" Fitz turned to see Bryce. "Thought I would come over and help out with some finishing touches, besides the girls have been up since 6, they're too excited to sleep." Bryce was pointing at the table Fitz had set up with a sign overhead that said, "Special Guest."
"That you will have to wait and see. That's a surprise for the town compliments of me." Fitz said with a smile.
"What else is new? How will you amaze us this year?" Bryce chuckled.
"I am heading home to get ready. Take one last look around for me, if there are any problems, shoot me a text. Tell the girls and Lara, I'll see them later. Oh, one more thing, any news on the Edison front?"
"No, we've checked out all the workers here from out of town, doesn't look like anyone has a connection, we're still keeping our guard up." He reached out to shake Fitz's hand.
Fitz returned the handshake. "See you later, Bryce."
"Ok, my prince", as he threw kisses in the air.
Fitz shook his head and walked away. His speech was ready, Jordan Lewis was ready, and the field looked great. There was nothing more he could do on his end to make this a success. Now it was up to the people of Rutland. He was sure they wouldn't disappoint.
As Fitz was heading home, his phone rang. He looked down at the display. "Mellie". No way, he said to himself. Not today Mellie. He let it go to voicemail and continued his walk home. He passed Liv's house, but didn't go in. It was like a groom on his wedding day not seeing the bride. He didn't want any "bad luck."
The McClellan's had all their things ready and were ready to head to the field. This was a day the three girls looked forward to as much as Christmas. This year was more exciting because they had written their own fairytale and they couldn't wait for Fitz and Olivia to act it out. They were sure it would win.
"Alyssa, go over the story one more time. I want to make sure we have everything we need."
Alyssa began to read the fairytale her sister Brianna had made up. Alyssa couldn't take any credit this was all Brianna's imagination coming to life. Alyssa was happy to write it for her.
"Once upon a time there was a prince. His name was Prince Thomas. Prince Thomas was very unhappy. His mother, the evil queen was always mad at him. He never listened to her and one day when he wasn't supposed to be out, he got into a fight.
The fight was with Prince Able, their enemies from the next town. Prince Able cut Thomas's face just by his eye. The cut was so bad and went deep, that Thomas lost his eye and had to wear a patch. His mother was mad because Princess Quinn did not want to marry him anymore. He looked terrible and scary with no eye.
So, being sad and mad, the prince always took walks in the woods to be by himself. His mother kept telling him he would always be by himself and would never have a wife. He liked being in the woods where he could cut logs for firewood.
Princess Gabby was a lonely princess. She was from a faraway country, and she came to Thomas's kingdom by accident. She wanted to go where no one knew her. Her stepmother was very mean to her, and one day she pushed Gabby down and Gabby hurt her face.
Gabby had been burned because when she fell, her stepsisters were having a campfire gathering and Gabby got burned from the fire, she fell too close to it. The side of her face was burned, and her stepsisters always laughed at her because now she was "ugly".
Gabby was so beautiful, and all the princes wanted to marry her, but now no one wanted to marry her. Her stepsisters and stepmother liked that, and told Gabby every day she would always be alone.
One night, Gabby ran away. She ran far away and then she met a beautiful unicorn. The unicorn could talk, and it had big wings. "Princess Gabby, I was sent from the Gods to help you. I will take you somewhere far away and you will find happiness."
Gabby didn't believe a unicorn, but she got on and the unicorn left her in the woods. They were the same woods Prince Thomas would go to everyday. She found a tiny woodshed and she cleaned it and made it her little home. Every day she would go for a walk, always with her purple jacket and her hood up, covering her burned face.
One day she heard the chop chop chop of an ax. She followed the sound and she saw the back of a man chopping wood. The man thought he heard something and turned just little. Gabby couldn't see the patch because it was on the other side. "Who's there? These are my woods; you can't be here. Show yourself."
Gabby got scared, but she was brave. "My name is Princess Gabby, I come from far away. I don't want to leave I like it here."
Prince Thomas listened. She had the most beautiful voice. He wanted to see her, but he was afraid his eye would scare her, so he said, "you can stay if you visit me every day and we talk to each other, just like we are doing now."
He couldn't see her, and she couldn't see him. They agreed and after a week of talking to each other, Princess Gabby finally said. "I want to see what you look like." She really did because his voice sounded so nice, and she felt he had a good heart.
"Ok," he said, "but you have to promise not to get scared when you see me."
"I promise", she said, but she didn't know what he meant. Why would she be scared of him?
He stepped closer to her. He saw her hood covering her face. She looked closely at him and saw the patch covering his eye. Under his patch, she saw a large scar from where the knife had cut him.
"Take your hood off", he said as he stepped even closer. Princess Gabby got scared again, she was afraid he would run away when he saw her face.
Soon they were standing so close to each other, and Gabby looked up at Prince Thomas. She reached up and took her hood off, and Prince Thomas saw her whole face." Alyssa stopped her reading.
Bryce and Lara started to clap. "Alyssa, that was great reading. Brianna, that is a wonderful story. But what happens when the prince sees the Princess's face?" Lara asked her young daughters.
"We don't know," Brianna said. "That depends on Fitz and Olivia. Remember, they are the ones that have to make the fairytale have a happily ever after."
"Well, let's head over to the field" Bryce said. "We need to get copies to Fitz and Olivia, so they know what to do." Chloe started clapping. "See, mommy. Pwincess Olivia will mawwy Pwince Fitz on fairytale day."
"Today was a fairytale
I wore a dress
You wore a dark gray t-shirt
You told me I was pretty when I looked like a mess
Today was a fairytale" -Taylor Swift
Olivia heard the scratching at the door and knew Daisy was letting her know it was time to go. She took one last look in the mirror. It wasn't as cold as it should be this time of year in Vermont, but Oliva wore a loose-fitting sweater with a cowlneck. It was long enough, and she had black leggings under, with black knee-high boots. She decided to leave her hair natural.
She stepped out onto the porch and had to catch her breath. Fitz was standing there. A gray button-down shirt with the first two buttons opened. For the first time she could see the hairs on his neck. Oh, she wanted to put her lips on his neck.
He was wearing dark black jeans that fit him perfectly. His hair was gorgeous, with his curls in the back looking a bit curlier today. She just stared at him as he did her. She stood looking up at him. "You look mighty fine, Mister, I am going to be the envy of everyone there today."
"Quite the opposite, Ms. Pope. You look beautiful, comfortable. I love that sweater on you, and your hair, those curls, they are amazing. Olivia blushed. "Thank you." Their eyes locked, and Fitz put his hand on her gripping her face and holding her neck in place.
In the most seductive voice, he said to her "In case I forget to say it later, I had the best time with you today." He leaned down, without the usual hesitation and his lips gently overtook hers. It was such a soft kiss, and he pulled Olivia closer to him.
Olivia was the first to part his lips with her tongue, and Fitz pulled back, gently pushed her neck back and began kissing under her ear. Olivia's body reacted sending goosebumps down her and pulling him closer to feel more of his lips on her neck. She gently pulled at his curls and pulled him back into a deep kiss.
She stopped and rested her head in the crook of his neck. "Fitz", she whispered. "We are going to be late."
"Time slows down
Whenever you're around
Can you feel the magic in the air
It must have been the way your kissed me
Fell in love when I saw you standing there
It must have been the way
Today was a fairytale—Taylor Swift
"The field is a mile up the road. We'll take a nice walk there." Fitz took Olivia's hand as they started in the direction. Olivia took a deep breath and prepared herself for the unknown. Daisy led the way stopping here and there to sniff but kept up with them.
At the entrance to the fair, just before going in he turned to her. "We are going to head to the back of the stage, that's where Jordon is waiting. I am going to introduce him in my opening, and I am going to introduce you as well. Are you alright with that?"
"Of course," she nodded. "But don't leave me in the back too long with Jordan, he may be unable to play in this season." Fitz gave his gleaming smile, and Olivia's breathing grew shallow. She reached up and pulled him to her. She whispered in his ear. "I can't wait until after the festival." She pecked his cheek, and the smile never left.
"Today was a fairytale
You've got a smile
Takes me to another planet
Every move you make everything you say is right.
Today was a fairytale"—Taylor Swift
They didn't know until they began walking towards the stage that all the eyes had noticed their little intimate moment. Chloe came running to them having a small stuffed pink bear in her hand. Fitz lifted her high in the air.
"Look Owivia, I won a pinky" she said proudly holding her bear for Liv to see. "I got the beanbag in the can."
"That's great Chloe."
Chole looked at Fitz and they rubbed noses. "Ok, sweet pea, I have to get on the stage. Can you take Daisy to the kitchen by Sophie, please?"
Chole nodded and when Fitz let her down, Daisy followed Chloe.
They walked behind the stage where a trailer was set up. Fitz led Olivia into the trailer and sitting, reading a sports magazine was Jordon Lewis. He jumped up when he saw Fitz, greeting him with a tight handshake.
"Thanks so much for coming. The town appreciates this. This is going to make them crazy." He turned to Olivia.
Olivia Pope, meet Jordan Lewis, shor….
"Shortstop for the Vermont Lake Monsters. Ended the season last year with a 305-batting average, 43 homeruns, 145 RBI's and 23 stolen bases. Yeah, I know who you are and no I am not a fan."
"Ouch," Jordan said looking at Olivia, "pleased to meet you also."
Olivia laughed. "It truly is an honor. I follow your career, I make sure you don't do too much damage to my Yankees, but I couldn't stop that last year. Welcome and thank you for doing this for Rutland."
"Ah, no big deal, nothing I wouldn't do for my former hometown and for this guy right here.' He patted Fitz on the shoulder.
"Now, you two behave while I go make this speech." He turned to Liv. "Wish me luck." As he leaned down and kissed her softly.
Fitz stepped up onto the stage and Olivia heard the applause of the audience. All eyes were on Fitz, and he took it all in stride. Once he began speaking Olivia could tell he was a natural.
"Welcome to the fifth annual Rutland Fairytale Fall Festival. Please take advantage of all the free events and free food being offered to you. Don't forget to thank Sophie for her amazing entrees, and please visit the vendors food stands also. They are not free, but a proceed goes to the public library, so please patronize them.
You all know the history of the event, so I won't bore you with the details. A big shout out to my buddy Alyssa McClellan who gave us the idea to start this and kept Rutland on it's feet. Alyssa walked up to the stage and gave Fitz a hug. She stood next to him, and she waved at Olivia standing behind out of sight for now.
"So today we have a very special guest. This special guest is here free of charge. However, any proceeds made from this guest will go to a trust fund in Rutland to be distributed as needed to various organizations and businesses. So, without further suspense, welcome your hometown hero, shortstop for the Vermont Lake Monsters, Jordan Lewis."
The crowd erupted and Fitz handed the mic over to Jordan and reached his hand out for Liv to step on the stage. Liv was staring at him, just in awe at how well of a speaker he is. She just couldn't take her eyes off of him. His arm was now around her shoulders and Fitz was listening to Jordan, not knowing the effect his touch was having on her body, and she reached up and interlocked her fingers with his hand around her shoulder.
"Time slows down
Whenever you're around
I can feel my heart
It's beating in my chest
Did you feel it?
I can't put this down."—Taylor Swift
Jordan went over the suggested donations for the various items he would be signing at the table and there was a silent auction for the bat he used to hit his second homerun in the championship game last year. He handed the mic back to Fitz.
Fitz let go of Liv, who suddenly felt awkward standing on the stage. "And this beautiful woman is our newest addition to Rutland. Please meet my neighbor, all the way from NYC, Ms. Olivia Pope."
Olivia waved and stepped closer to Fitz. "Ok, get the festival started, enjoy yourselves, and I will see you back here at six for the performances. You even get a treat. I will be performing. Once again, the crowd clapped."
He pulled Liv by the hand, and he escorted Jordan to the table filled with memorabilia already. There was a long line formed. Jordan picked up a ball, signed in the sweet spot, and tossed it gently at Liv. Liv caught it and looked at it. "That's going next to the Jeter ball Fitz told me about. Enjoy." He turned and began greeting his fans.
As Fitz and Olivia started making their rounds at the festival, Mellie had just pulled onto Main Street in Rutland. She stopped at Sophie's but was surprised to see it closed. She read the sign on the door. "At the festival, come join us at the field."
Ah, yes, the childish festival. Fitz never went to them. She decided to drive to his place. At least there will be some down time there with him and she can explain what was going on with her. She'll decide after that if she would go to the festival and bother some of her haters.
Abby ran up to Liv and Fitz. "You two are the talk of this place. You look amazing. You are definitely a power couple."
They both laughed. Leo called Abby and Abby turned back to Fitz and Liv. "Don't forget to stop by and grab some of Leo's desserts. See you two later."
For the next hour, Liv saw just how much Fitz was respected in town. Everyone knew him, greeted him, and thanked him. They welcomed Olivia and introduced themselves. Liv and Fitz just walked around. It reminded her so much of the date with Tyler. She rested her head on Fitz's shoulder as they walked hand in hand around the festival.
Fitz tried several times to knock all the pins down to try to win Olivia a stuffed bunny. Finally, he gave the reign to Olivia who knocked them all down on her first try. She picked the prize and handed it to Fitz.
They participated in the sack race, but no one would race against them. It was just the two of them and when it became clear Olivia was going to beat Fitz, he had just enough reach to grab her sack. She fell, but grabbed him in the process, and he went down with her. He landed on top of her inches from her lips. "People are watching, Mister."
His lips landed on hers, then he pulled his up. "I don't care", he said with a smile. Liv felt just as she felt when Tyler returned her kiss in front of the whole basketball team. God, she was melting.
After the sack race, they rode the Ferris wheel, and when they stopped at the very top, Olivia closed her eyes. "Oh, come on, Liv, open them, this is fun." Liv looked down at all the people, as Fitz couldn't take his eyes off her. She pulled herself back and met his stare. Sitting at the top of the Ferris wheel with the mountains in view, she leaned into a kiss with Fitz. Their lips locking once again. Liv couldn't remember feeling this special. She really felt like a teenager on her first date.
As the Ferris wheel spun and brought them back down, they exited to a round of applause from the people waiting on line. "Guess they saw the kiss." Fitz laughed. Liv just blushed. Brianna came running over. "Are you two ready? Come to the stage."
Once behind the stage, Fitz and Olivia were parted, grabbed by little girls excited to get their story told. Fitz went with Alyssa and Bryce and Liv went with Brianna and Lara. They were both handed copies of the stories and while they were getting their make up ready, both of them began reading the story.
Back at Fitz's house, Mellie knocked first, seeing Fitz's car in the driveway. When there was no answer, or seemed to be no movement from within, she twisted the knob. No one ever kept their doors locked in this town. Mellie took it upon herself to make herself at home.
She began walking around the house. Surely Fitz wasn't at that festival. He did not like big crowds. As she walked through the living room, the picture on the fireplace caught her eye. Who was this woman with Fitz? He looked…..happy, very happy. She couldn't remember seeing Fitz with such a big smile.
She continued, curiously through the house, and froze when she saw her picture in his bedroom. Who is she? She didn't see any signs of her living there with him, maybe she was a guest, a friend he had come to know. Feeling angered, even a bit jealous, Mellie headed out the door towards the festival.
The two couples before Fitz and Olivia had already performed their fairytale. The crowd laughed when the "Repunzel" story was a flop. The prince got tangled in the string that should have been her hair, and fell off the stage.
The next couple who tried to reenact the Little Mermaid didn't fair too well either. "Ariel" tried to walk with her mermaid bottom and toppled into her prince as they both fell.
Olivia had read the story, three time and couldn't believe what she was reading. It was so eerily close to how she feels. What if Fitz was her Prince and he did see her true scars? How would he react? She was so surprised how real life Brianna got when she made up this story.
Across the stage, Fitz was feeling the same way. He was reading the story again, and thought of his own scars. His character had no eye, a disfigurement of the body and Liv was going to react. Would it be a true reaction or would this all continue to be an act?
The two had no more time to think as Bryce introduced Alyssa as the reader and Brianna as the author. He then announced Fitz and Olivia to take the stage. Liv took one last look in the mirror. Lara had done an amazing job on her makeup, making the scar look very realistic.
Fitz took one look in his mirror. He had the patch in his hand and he tried on for show before going out there. He would put it on midway through the reading.
While Alyssa read beautifully and clearly, there wasn't a sound besides her voice. She didn't have one little hint of nervousness and it came time for "Gabby to meet Thomas." As they came close together on the stage, Fitz reached for the hood and pulled it back revealing the made up scar.
Liv swallowed hard and even though it wasn't in the story she said "I understand if you're afraid of what I look like. I can go away."
Fitz looked at her. "The way you look? Look at me. I have no eye, he said with a smirk. I wish I did so I can see more of you. That scar means nothing you are beautiful with or without it."
Forgetting there was a town full of people watching them, they both interlocked their hands at one another's side and dove in to a passionate kiss. It was their deepest kiss thus far, and Fitz heard a soft moan come from the back of Olivia's throat.
Olivia's thoughts were lost in that moment. She wanted this life, she wanted their daughter's pink bike in the driveway, she wanted Fitz to take their son to the baseball games, she wanted him. It's only been a week, but she's felt more in a week than she has in a lifetime. They pulled back from the kiss, and you could hear the silence from the crowd, the smiling crowd, as they both blushed.
At one point, Fitz let go of her hand and caressed the part of her face where the scar was to show he was not the least bit fazed by it.
Liv took her thumb and rubbed under the patch where the scar was. She too did it in a way that showed Fitz it didn't matter that it was there. Suddenly, they heard Alyssa's voice sounding a bit confused. They just looked at each other as the people did the only thing they could do, clap. "And then Thomas fell in love with Gabby and Gabby fell in love with Thomas and they lived happily ever after." Alyssa put the perfect closing to the fairytale, as the two girls went over and stood by Olivia and Fitz.
"But can you feel this magic in the air?
It must have been the way you kissed me
Fell in love when I saw you standing there
It must have been the way
Today was a fairytale
It must have been the way
Today was a fairytale-Taylor Swift
While Alyssa and Brianna were waiting to be announced the winners, no one noticed the woman way back of the crowd watching the act taking place on stage. Mellie was just as surprised as the rest of the townspeople, but she had a surprise of her own. She was still in shock in the way they kissed up on stage, and she too knew it was no act.
While everyone was focused on the announcing of the winner, Mellie made her way behind the stage. She waited for the perfect timing. This town had no idea what she was bringing to them, and Fitz, how dare he, she would show him also. The town will see he isn't the golden boy they think he is.
As Alyssa and Brianna collected their prizes, Lara and Abby talked to Fitz and Olivia. "That definitely wasn't acting", Abby made it clear to the two of them. "You have feelings for each other. It's obvious and the whole town knows it now" Abby stared with her gleaming green eyes at them both.
Olivia couldn't lie. She was feeling something right now. The perfect ending to a fairytale. This could very well be her prince. She turned to Fitz. "Were you just acting when you said you would accept me with the scar?"
"No, I wasn't. Nothing like that would matter to me. It's who you are inside." He stared at her until his eyes said he was speaking the truth. "What about you Olivia? Would you accept someone scarred? Someone disfigured?"
Her stare never left his. "In a heartbeat. You have made me feel so special tonight. I haven't felt this happy, this comfortable since the accident. I am not acting when I am with you." She reached up to kiss him one more time, but a loud sound came over the microphone and all heads turned.
"Well, isn't this cute, a nice little fairytale in Rutland. Look at all the wonderful people of Rutland." Mellie started to clap. She looked in the direction of Fitz and Olivia and Abby ran to the stage to grab the microphone, but then she stopped. "But every fairytale has to have an evil queen and look who's here." Mellie opened her arm introducing herself.
"Yes, take a look Abby, it looks good on me, doesn't it?"
Abby's mouth fell open and she looked over to Fitz with total shock on her face. She noticed though that Fitz was in shock as well. Hell, the whole town was in shock.
"Hello, Olivia", she said through the microphone. "I am Mellie, and it's a pleasure to meet you."
Liv's eyes never left Mellie's right hand that was rubbing her clearly pregnant belly. If Olivia had to guess, she looked four months along. Suddenly Olivia felt the whole town staring at her. She felt the heat rush to her face. She couldn't stop the tears, and she heard Abby's voice from the other day 'haven't heard anything for about four months now."
This wasn't happening. This couldn't be happening. All eyes on Olivia. The girl, now woman to feel sorry for. She couldn't look at anyone, she just turned and ran in the direction of her home, much like the day she ran from the locker room, hoping she would get the right trail through the woods, not realizing how dark it was having been under the lights from the stage. She didn't care, she just needed to get out of there.
Fitz watched her run and was frozen where he stood. Abby finally got to the microphone and grabbed it out of Mellie's hand. As much as she wanted to smack the bitch she wasn't doing so to a pregnant woman, that wouldn't go over too well. There was a complete silence amongst the crowd, as Bryce walked up to the stage beginning to announce the end of the evening and directing his officers to clear the crowd.
Today was a fairytale.
