A/N: Thank you if you're still reading. I figure I will wrap this up on or around Chapter 50, so our Olitz can live their happy life, but first they have to get there, of course. Happy reading and thank you so much for inspiring me to keep going with this story. Never thought I would write a 50 chapter story. Enjoy and I'd love to hear your reviews.
Chapter 43
"Baby Girl, I am sorry, I really am. I wanted so much to be there for your first ultrasound but moving out of this place is more of a hassle than I thought it would be. I won't be able to get there." Maya took a sigh of frustration.
"It's ok, Mom, really it is. Fitz will be there. They'll be other ultrasounds, it's still early in the pregnancy. When do you think you can officially move out?" Liv was disappointed, but she understood. Her mom missed a lot in her life when she moved to Paris. She was happy to have her back soon.
"Give me a month and I will be there for good; I promise you that."
Liv smiled. "I'll talk to you after the ultrasound. I love you."
"Love you more, tell my grand baby I said hello."
Olivia laughed. "I will."
Liv rubbed her eyes. She put her hand on her stomach. "In just a few hours we'll see what you're doing in there. I can't wait."
Fitz came out of the shower. He took one look at Liv and knew. "Your mom isn't going to make it is she?"
"No." Liv said standing up and facing him. "But that's ok, I'll have you there. I originally thought you would be traveling with the team so that's why I wanted her there." She gave him a hug.
"Travel with the team and miss the first look at our baby. No way." He kissed her cheek, pulling away to dry off and get dressed.
"So, since Maya isn't coming, I was thinking." Fitz said.
"Uh-oh. Thinking isn't always so good." Liv pulled some clothes out for the day.
"After the ultrasound, how about we get an early start to our trip to Santa Barbara? My dad isn't expecting us, it would be a nice surprise for him, and we can tell him the news in person."
Liv thought about it. "Sparks and his family still have another week to get there. Are you sure?"
"Positive. What do we have to do here?" Daisy gave a small whimper.
Liv looked down at her trusted companion. "Can we bring her Fitz, please? She's been by my side since we've been back from NY."
Daisy put her chin on Fitz's lap. He gave a her a strong pet smoothing her beautiful golden coat. "You want to come to California? Will you be a good girl on the plane? Huh?"
Daisy's tail was wagging, and she jumped so her front paws were on his lap now and she was licking his chin. "Ok, sold. You're coming with us this time."
As if she won her way, Daisy hopped down and walked back to her bed to listen to her humans finish their talk. Fitz took a washcloth and cleaned Daisy's kisses from his chin.
"Huck isn't coming for another two weeks to begin the summer program at the Academy. Lara is super busy with her mayoral duties, Sophie is…well Sophie, and Abby and Leo are away on a month long vacation to Montreal." Fitz reminded Olivia.
"And Monica and Sam, you think they'll be ok."
"I think they'll be fine." Fitz came and grabbed her from the back, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder. He gave a kiss to her neck which brought chills down her arm.
"Fitz" she whispered. "We have an hour to be at the Drs. office in Randolph." She reached back and rubbed his neck.
"Plenty of time, don't bother getting dressed just yet." He turned her and backed her up to the bed. Kissing her on the way down, as she used the back of his neck for leverage.
"mmm" she groaned. "I can't ever get enough of you." Her lips connected with his, her tongue outlining his mouth as she felt him guide himself inside of her.
Liv closed her eyes and put her nerves to rest, letting the man she loves take over all her feelings. She rubbed his soft, drying curls, pulling his ear to her lips. As he slowly glided in and out of her, she whispered, "I love you Mister", and closed her eyes to feel every inch of him.
On their way to Randolph in the back of the car, Fitz wouldn't let go of her hand. They were interlocked together, and Olivia rested her head on Fitz's shoulder. "Are you nervous?"
Fitz shrugged as Max drove the car, he was too nervous to drive and wouldn't tell Liv that. "Not so much nervous as anxious. So much has happened between us, I just want everything with this pregnancy to go right. I don't want you worrying about anything or to have any added stress."
She kissed his cheek. "We'll be fine. I am excited to go to California to see where you grew up. I can't wait to see where Fitzgerald Grant the Third climbed trees and rode his little tricycle."
"Tricycle?" He poked her, making her giggle. "I began on a bicycle, then moved to higher things than trees, like fighter jets. I can take you to the field where I flew my first plane."
Liv smiled. "How old were you?"
"Promise not to tell, my dad can get in trouble." Fitz smiled.
"Oh really, in trouble, twenty years later?" Liv laughed.
"I was twelve. He had an experienced pilot from the Air Force take me up and Captain Brandon let me fly for about five minutes. It was that moment I knew this was what I wanted to do." Fitz looked away. "I just never thought it would lead to so much heartache."
The car came to a stop. "We're here." Max looked in the rearview and told them they reached the Drs. office.
Liv took a deep breath. "Here we go Mister, the journey to parenting." She held his face in her hand. "I dreamed of this Fitz, becoming a mom, I dreamed of this. I just never thought it would happen so fast with someone I love with all my heart and soul. Let's do this."
Together they walked towards the medical office, ready to face the promise of a beautiful future.
"Are you sure it was him?" It wasn't that Huck didn't believe Lara; he was annoyed he lost track of Edison. Opening the MMA and coming back to Financially Yours had Huck a bit distracted.
"Oh, it was him alright. Liv and Fitz had just left for the ultrasound. I had a deputy sheriff pass the house. It's just force of habit and kind of routine since everything that had happened. He said there was a man in a car in the driveway. He described Edison perfectly. I ran the plates on the car." Lara looked down at the paper in front of her. "the car was reported stolen from Harlem two nights ago." Lara was on top of this.
"Ok, I am going to head up in about an hour. I'll charter a plane, so it won't be that long." Huck was typing things into a computer.
"I thought you said he was in prison." Lara said, talking from the mayor's office in the Rutland Town Hall.
"He was." Huck squinted at the screen. "Son of a bitch found a glitch through his lawyer using a rock-solid alibi and DNA evidence. He was only released three weeks ago. You think the asshole would run and enjoy some independence."
"Well, he isn't getting away with anything here. This is my town now; I'm running the show. He's in for a rude awakening." Lara looked at her phone display. "Huck, Bryce is calling, I'll call you back."
"Hello, is this the beautiful town of Rutland's gorgeous mayor?" Bryce said with a smile.
"Watch it, Sir, you're on the job and I'm your boss. I can have you fired." Lara cracked back.
"Then I'll spend all my time at home staying in the living room and watching meaningless sports all day. You sure you want to fire me?"
Lara laughed. "Touché, Mr. McClellan." She paused. "We have trouble."
"Uh-oh, that's not good, what's up?"
"Seems Edison is in town. He's snooping around on Fitz's property. He was there earlier today about an hour ago."
"Shit." Bryce hooked a U-turn and headed towards Fitz's place. "Was Fitz there?"
"No, they have their ultrasound scheduled, but he thinks Olivia lives next door. And stop heading in that direction. This has to be done by an officer he's not familiar with. I already have Forrester heading there."
Bryce stopped the car. His wife knew him too well. "What about Monica and Sam?"
"I'm about to call them now and give them a heads up to be on the lookout. I'm taking care of this Bryce, I can do this, it's why I'm in the position right?"
He took a deep breath. He wasn't used to his wife having such a powerful town position. Even though she was more than capable of doing the job, he still was in protective mode for her. "Yes dear, you're right. The girls?"
"A and B are at school and C is at Sophie's helping her in the kitchen. Her exact words were if Abby and Weo are away who will make the best cookies? So she went off to Sophie's." Lara laughed.
"I'll head there for lunch, just to be on the lookout. Keep me posted. I don't want Fitz going home and finding Edison there. We have to keep this from them, they don't need this, not with Liv pregnant and Fitz having his PTSD coming back sporadically."
"Huck is on his way up also, so." Lara informed him.
"Perfect. Talk to you later Mayor Beautiful." Bryce hung up and his phone buzzed immediately with Fitz's number on the display.
"Aren't you at a very important Drs. appointment Sir?" Bryce answered as so not to sound alarmed.
"We're just about to go in. I wanted you to take Daisy to your place. We are packed and ready to leave for Santa Barbara, we had a change of plans, and your house is closer than ours to the airport. We won't be back for at least two weeks."
"Oh, that's good, I guess. Everything alright with your father?"
"Yeah, fine. We just wanted to head there earlier than the team, give him the news in person, and I can show Liv around California. Can you also secure the place for us?"
"Not a problem. Give a call when you're on your way to my place. Any thing you need for Daisy?"
"Nah, we'll have everything out there." Fitz took a deep breath. "Bryce, man, my heart is pounding out of my chest." Fitz looked towards the door, Liv waving him in. "I don't know how you did this three times."
Bryce gave a calming laugh. "It didn't get easier that's for sure. Let's hope you get to do it three times also. It's worth all the stress, trust me."
"Ok, Liv's waving me in. I'll call you in a few. I can't believe I'm going to be a dad." With that, he hung up.
Bryce stared at the display. He shook his head in happiness. If anyone deserved to be a father, it was Fitz. There was no doubt he'd be a great one. He also took a sigh of relief. With Fitz and Liv being gone, out of town for two weeks, it would give them plenty of time to deal with Edison.
Before he stopped at Sophie's for lunch, he gave Forrester a call. "I know what Lara has you doing, but I need a favor since I shouldn't be seen by the house."
"What's up?" Forrester was just approaching Fitz's place. No one was there, like before, and the driveway only had Liv's car parked in it.
"Could you get Daisy, bring her over to my place please. Fitz doesn't want her being alone."
"You got it." Forrester hung up the phone and used the code Lara gave him to get into Fitz's place.
Daisy was standing by the back patio door, barking, loudly. Forrester knew Daisy since Fitz had gotten her; he never heard her bark like this. It was a warning bark for sure.
Taking one look outside the patio, he noticed Edison fiddling with door. Seeing Forrester, Edison made a run for it, towards Liv's place. By the time Forrester moved the barking Daisy and got the door opened, Edison was out of sight.
Forrester was patting Daisy on the head. She sat next to Forrester as he told her "Good Girl, let's get you to the McClellan's." Daisy happily went with him, satisfied she protected her humans once again.
While on the way to the McClellan's, Forrester radioed Lara, told him what he saw, and the direction Edison was going. Lara thanked him, told him to just let Daisy in through the back and hung up.
Sam and Monica were at Sam's physical therapy. If Edison tried to get into Liv's place, they wouldn't be home. Forrester was quickly on his way back there, and Bryce had already issued an APB to find Edison.
Rutland was a small town; he wouldn't have many places to hide.
"Ms. Pope, good to see you again." Dr. Webster shook Olivia's hand. "You look a bit more relaxed than the last time we met and more rested." She turned to Fitz. "Hello, you are?"
"Fitz. Fitzgerald Grant, I'm the fa…." Fitz took a hard swallow, finding some saliva. "the father." He continued nervously.
Dr. Webster held her hand out. "Of course, Mr. Grant, I am a big fan of the Lake Monsters. Their road trip is looking good." Dr. Webster smiled. "Well, let's get started."
"A little pressure, Olivia as I put the probe up vaginally, ok." Dr. Webster began moving it around a bit. "How have you been feeling? Any nausea or extreme tiredness?" She was looking at the screen and talking.
Liv had Fitz's hand interlocked with hers. He was standing, unable to sit, and Liv was looking at the screen with the Dr. "No nausea yet, I'm not as tired as I was when I first saw you." Liv stopped talking as she looked at the screen.
"Fitz" Liv whispered.
"I see it." Fitz said, teary eyed. "The little head."
"That's right." Dr. Webster confirmed. "There's the head." She pointed to the screen. "Looks like your little one is awake. Do you see the flutter of movements? All the room in the world to swim around in there now."
Fitz's grip tightened in Liv's hand, as he brought it up and kissed it. They looked at the screen together as Dr. Webster was taking still shots here and there. "And now." Dr. Webster turned a knob. "You may not be able to hear it clearly, but there." She pointed to something that looked like it was bouncing. "There's it's little heart, pumping nice and healthy. Can you see it?"
Liv's hand went over her eyes. She nodded as she cried. "I see it."
Fitz's forehead went down to hers as he gave her the softest kiss on her lips. "Our baby, Livvie."
Her hand left her eyes and caressed his cheek. "Our baby, Mister. How does everything look Dr?"
Dr. Webster pulled the probe out. "You're still early in your pregnancy. Gestational age looks as you will have a December baby. On or around December 15. I'll see you back here in four weeks for a 12 week ultrasound and we can determine the sex of the baby, if you so desire. Do you have any questions?"
"Will I get sick, I mean can I still get sick, vomiting and all?" Liv squished her face.
Dr. Webster nodded. "It wouldn't be unusual to feel a bit nauseous, just as long as the vomiting isn't continual and there isn't any blood in it. You may spot here and there vaginally, again, nothing too heavy and if it is, give me a call immediately." Dr. Webster looked at Fitz. "Dad? Any questions?"
He almost melted with the word dad coming from the doctor. He shook his head. "No, but I plan to pamper and spoil her, is that ok?"
"That's 100% recommended. Having dad around during the pregnancy is crucial also. She's going to need your love and support." She took something from the machine. "Make the 12 week appointment as you leave, see you then. Nice meeting you Fitz and go Lake Monsters." She handed Fitz the pictures that came out from the ultrasound.
Liv rolled her eyes. "Go Yankees." Dr. Webster rolled her eyes. "Bye."
Fitz's hand went over the four pictures. "It looks like a peanut." He stared at the black and white squares.
Liv got up, went to the bathroom, and returned. Fitz was sitting now where the doctor had been, and Liv put her chin on his shoulder from behind. She looked down at the pictures with him. "Looks more like a kidney bean to me." Liv said smiling.
Fitz stood up and wrapped Liv in his arms. "I love you so much Livvie. I couldn't imagine having a child with anyone else in the world. Now, let's go off to California, I can't wait to spoil you and little peanut."
"Before we go Fitz, you sure you're alright with this? Things are good with you and Gerry?" Liv didn't want any added stress to him. He hadn't had an episode for two weeks since the cabin.
"I am more than sure. I told you in order to go forward, I have to leave the past in the past. I forgave him in DC. I want him part of our child's life."
"Ok then, California, here we come." Liv squealed as Fitz scooped her up, handing her the sleeve of pictures.
Max was ready with the car, all packed. Daisy the only missing piece and they were off to get her. When Max saw Fitz carrying Liv out of the building he frowned.
"Sir, did everything go ok?" He opened the door. Fitz put Liv down as she climbed into the car.
Fitz put his arm around Max's shoulders. "Max, my boy, everything went great. I'm going to be a dad." He joined Liv in the back seat of the car.
While Max began to drive away, Liv took a picture of the picture of the sonogram. Fitz looked at her. "I want to send it to Huck. Something to make him smile. He doesn't do much of that." Fitz rubbed her hand smiling.
Huck's plane landed in the small private airport outside of Rutland. The deep darkness was in his eyes once again. He didn't like surprises and Edison's arrival in Rutland was a surprise he wasn't ready for, until now.
Liv had called Huck happier than he's ever heard her. She was pregnant, her and Fitz expecting a baby. This is why Liv moved to a town like Rutland, she wanted to be a mother, to be married, to have a normal life. Edison was a dead man for even thinking about coming between Liv and Fitz's happiness.
As he drove his rental car towards Rutland, he thought back to the dark cell Fitz was living in during captivity. The darkness in Huck became darker as he remembered their one conversation. Fitz was sweating, in need of water the captors were with holding. Huck was able to get a bottle and sneak it into the cell.
Fitz drank it in one sip. He sat on the dirt floor and buried his head in his arms. "Mike, you want to be a father?" Fitz didn't look up. He just kept his head down as if this was something he was thinking about in his long alone time.
"I'm not made to be a father, Soldier, I've done too many bad things. What are you thinking?"
Fitz finally looked up. The cell door was opened so the sunlight was coming in. Fitz squinted towards Huck. "I know it's a far cry because of where I am now, but I am thinking of three kids. Small tiny replicas of their mother, maybe one of their father running in a backyard. They are laughing, playing catch, and sliding down slides." Fitz shrugged. "It's what keeps me going some days."
Huck moved closer to Fitz. He sat up next to him against the wall. He gave him a pat on the knee. "Don't give up hope ok. I know it seems impossible now, but it's going to happen, Soldier. You're going to be a dad one day, and the woman you love will be an outstanding mother."
Fitz nodded his head wanting to believe what "Mike" was saying. Right now, lying as a prisoner in an Iraqi desert, it was hard to even believe, but he tried. He was tired now, tired from the heat and tired from talking. He straightened his body out on the dirt floor, ready to fall asleep right there.
"You know, Mike, wouldn't it be funny if by some crazy fate, you were around and you could be a godfather." Fitz sighed a laugh as his sweaty body fell off to sleep.
Huck's phone buzzed. Before he went in the trailer, he looked at the display and opened the message. It was from Liv.
"Huck, it's really happening. I'm going to be a mom; Fitz is going to be a dad. You saved him Huck and because of that, we have this. The attachment that came through was picture of the sonogram. We love you, we're off to California for a few weeks. Hope you're ready to be a godfather. See you when we get back. BEHAVE!"
Huck rubbed his hands over the picture of the little dot inside of Liv, smiling. The darkness not as heavy for the moment. Because of him, Liv had written. Huck felt a wetness in his eyes he hadn't felt in years. He began to wipe an unfamiliar tear away as he looked at what soon would be Liv and Fitz's baby.
Congratulations Liv, that's awesome news. Tell Fitz I am so happy for him. He talked a lot about being a father when he was in captivity. I'm sure it's a dream come true. I know being a godfather will be a dream come true for me. Enjoy California, and don't worry, I'll BEHAVE.
Huck gripped the steering wheel. He never would have thought, in a hundred years, that he would witness the birth of Fitz's baby. He never would have thought the mother of Fitz's baby would be the same woman that saved Huck's life. Huck looked in the rearview mirror. He gave an evil grin into it. The darkness quickly coming back.
"Oh yeah, Edison, you picked the wrong fucking couple to get your revenge on. Big mistake, dumb ass, big mistake." He parked on a dark, small road in a trailer park just outside of Rutland.
The car Edison had stolen had a tracking device. Once Huck pinged the car, he hacked the device so the NYPD looking for the car wouldn't find it. Huck stared at the car parked outside the rusty trailer in the lot. The trailer was dark, and Lara had told Huck Edison was somewhere in Rutland on foot.
Huck went into the trailer. There was an unpacked suitcase of a few clothes sitting on a mattress that was on the floor. Huck went through the clothes and suitcase, finding nothing of interest. He looked around.
In the corner of the room there was a small briefcase. On the briefcase were the initials ED. Huck picked it up. "What do we have here Mr. Davis?" He turned the case upside down and all the contents fell out. Huck took a deep breath; happy he was the one to find this. He was staring down at pictures and clippings. There were dozens of pictures of Fitz and Liv and clippings about when Fitz came forward about being a POW.
One picture of Fitz and Liv at the New Year's gala is the one that sent alarm to Huck, knowing exactly what Edison had planned. The picture was split in two, stopping right at the bottom. A red heart, drawn with permanent marker around Liv's face and Fitz next to her, but now split because of the cut, had a red dot drawn in the middle of his forehead. It resembled a bullet hole to the head.
His face crossed out with an X, Huck got the message clearly. He looked through the newspaper clippings, the town of Rutland circled in most of the articles. Huck picked up one article in particular. "Lake Monster's owner Fitzgerald Grant proposes to Olivia Pope at Yankee Stadium, She Said Yes."
Between the words Monsters and owner was the word DEAD. Huck continued to scatter pictures around looking for any other clues as if he needed them. Edison had one plan, kill Fitz and get to Olivia. "Not happening you fool; hope you planned your funeral."
He picked up the suitcase and threw it against the wall. The contents of it came crashing down, and clothes scattered everywhere.
Huck left now, he had the damaged pictures of Liv and Fitz, making sure they would never see it and he proceeded to drive to the town hall where he was supposed to meet with Lara and Bryce. As he drove, the darkness filled his eyes once again. He didn't think he was going to make that meeting.
Liv slept most of the plane ride, in Fitz's arms, on the soft couch in his private jet. After staring at the ultrasound pictures for eternity, Fitz opened his laptop to do some spreadsheets on the team, letting Liv continue to sleep on his lap.
Daisy was on the floor for now as the plane was in a comfortable cruising speed. Not being able to concentrate one bit, Fitz closed his laptop. He looked down at Liv's face. Her breathing was shallow, her hands under her cheek.
Fitz thought back to the ultrasound. He closed his eyes to see the beating the heart of their baby, Liv crying tears of joy when she saw it. He caressed her hair, moving some away from her forehead, and used his finger to outline her cheek down to her lips.
She stirred a bit but did not wake up. He tilted his head, looking at her. He felt a closure in his throat, not being able to breath for the moment, her beauty just consuming him. He shook his head. "The love I feel for you Olivia," he whispered.
He looked out the plane window. He remembers sweating, an excessive amount of sweat. He remembers being thirsty, as thirsty as he's ever been. He closed his eyes thinking back to the memory of Iraq, the same one Huck thinking of.
They were withholding water from him. Mike brought it in to him and he remembers guzzling it down in one sip. He had been alone for two days and all he had were his thoughts. He tried to stay positive, so he thought of being a father.
Fitz remembers, clear as the daylight he was staring at now, the conversation he had with Huck "Mike". He never thought his words would become a reality. He looked back down at Liv now, still breathing lightly, sleeping peacefully.
"All because I met you." He whispered once again. He wasn't lying to the doctor. He was going to spoil her. He knows how conscious she is about her scars, how scared she is about the pregnancy, and he doesn't want her to have one ounce of worrying.
Liv turned now, her body flat and the back of her head on Fitz's lap. He watched her blink her eyes open and get her bearings. She looked up at him and sat up, quickly.
"Fitz" she whispered. "You alright?" He had a stormy look in his eyes, like he was distant.
His hand reached out and he rubbed her cheek, pulling her to him and kissing her. "Just fine Livvie, go back to sleep. We have about two more hours on the flight."
Liv nodded. She let him lay on the couch and she cuddled up next to him. He gripped her tightly in his arms. He closed his eyes with her as they fell asleep together, not having any idea Edison was planning the ultimate revenge on them, that's how it would stay, and they would never know, thanks to their family in Rutland.
Lara called Huck's phone. Huck picked up. "Lara" he said in a deep voice, "tell me you found him."
She shook her head. "No luck. He'll make a mistake, I'm sure of it. Sophie has all three girls now. It's going to get dark soon, we may call off the search until tomorrow. Thought you were coming for a meeting."
He wasn't about to tell her about the trailer just yet. "Where was his last location?" Huck asked ignoring the question.
Lara stayed quiet; she didn't want to alarm him. "Umm, Huck."
"Where was it, Lara?"
Lara closed her eyes. Liv told her stories about Huck. He would stop at nothing to protect the people he loved. She saw that first hand with DJ. "He was trying to get into Fitz's place and headed towards Liv's house, but there's been no sighting of him since. It's heavily wooded there, you know that he may be lost."
"Good," Huck said. "I'll be in touch."
"Wait, where are you?"
"Don't worry, just keep looking ok."
Huck headed in the direction of Liv's place. There was one place he knew a bankrupt person like Edison would be hiding out, he just hoped Bryce and his team wouldn't get there before him.
Several yards up the road from Liv's place there as a house being built. It had the infrastructure, the walls weren't up yet, but Edison had stayed in worse places. He should've drove back into the town, but he knew his car had already been seen, he couldn't take the chance.
He was now sitting in the corner of the unbuilt house waiting for darkness to come, then he would make his way, along the woods and stream back to his trailer. He could wait, he's waited a long time for his revenge.
He lost all his money on legal fees just to get out of the wrongful murder charge. He had spent six months in a maximum security prison. He was begging for food on the street two weeks ago. No one believed he didn't kill his partner, even after he was released.
Had he claimed Rutland when he had the chance, this wouldn't be happening. Since it was Fitz who ruined it all, Fitz needed to die.
He loved Olivia, more than he's loved anyone in his life. To lose her to him was just a cruel set of circumstances. He was going to win her back, he promised himself that. He closed his eyes waiting for the sun to go down. His thoughts of Olivia having no one to turn to after Fitz was dead. He would be there for her, to comfort her, and those were his thoughts while he waited.
Olivia had told Huck the plans they had for Monica and Sam. Huck didn't know how far along the house was, but with Liv's mother coming back, he would imagine Fitz put a rush on it for an earlier complete date. He was sure Edison was hiding in there.
He wasn't going to spoil Edison's fun of finding a hiding place. Knowing Edison wouldn't take the chance of being seen on the streets, Huck parked his car in a lot about two miles from Liv's place and headed back towards the woods behind her house.
Waiting now by the water, the stream running pure, fresh water separating the mountains from the woodland, Huck reached in and cooled down his sweaty face. He had just walked two miles and it was hot out.
In the not so far distance, he watched the police cruisers go up and down Liv and Fitz's block a few times. He even saw one check around the unbuilt house, but the deputy didn't go in. Huck looked up at the darkening sky.
He turned and saw the sun setting, the same sun setting in the beautiful view Liv had the first night she arrived in Rutland. Liv told him about that night, meeting Fitz. "It was magical, Huck. My heart fluttered in a way I never thought it could and I knew I could never leave his side." Huck nodded as the last of the sun went away to the west.
About an hour later, he heard some footsteps, and heavy breathing. Huck watched from behind a tall bush as Edison made it to the water's edge. He went down to cup some water in his hand. He was thirsty. Edison looked around cautiously sipped water and walked in the direction Huck was waiting.
Just before reaching the bush, Huck stepped out in Edison's path. "Hello Edison Davis." If you asked Huck later, he wouldn't even remember saying those words.
Edison took a deep swallow, looking at Huck's hands for a weapon.
Huck tilted his head towards Edison. "Oh, look all you want, I'll even let you frisk me, this is something I won't need my toolbox for." Huck walked towards Edison, even as Edison began to run at full speed, Huck continued to walk.
The plane landed and Fitz had a car waiting for them. Daisy jumped in after Liv and sat between them. California still had daylight and it would be a few hours before Fitz and Liv would see the sun set like Huck had seen a few moments ago.
They arrived at the ranch, and when Fitz rang the bell, a beautiful Spanish woman answered the door, and jumped into Fitz's embrace. "Lucia" Fitz said hugging her back.
"Mi Amor" she said hugging him tighter.
Lucia turned to Liv. Liv always thought of her as an older woman, more like a grandma looking type, but she was young looking for her age. She put her arms out to Liv. "Hermosa."
Liv gave her a hug. "Nice to meet you, Lucia."
Lucia looked at Daisy. "Perra" She pet Daisy who was wagging her tail and Daisy walked in as if she had been invited.
"Fitz has told me so much about you." She said in the thickest, most elegant Spanish accent, turning back towards Olivia. "Come let's get you settled in."
"Is dad home?"
"Not yet, a few more minutes. He has no idea you are coming, yes?"
"Yes, we're surprising him."
She nodded with a bit of concern; Fitz noticed. Maybe he should have called. Anyway, Lucia led them in.
While Huck had just stepped out in front of Edison, Fitz would soon learn that his father was taking Lucia on a weekend getaway.
Fitz and Liv would have just enough time to talk briefly to Gerry, then the ranch would be theirs for the rest of the weekend.
As Edison ran from a walking Huck, Fitz took Liv's hand and led her through the most elegant rooms she had ever seen, up a spiraling staircase, and just like that, they were standing inside a room filled with pictures of a young Fitz.
Liv's shoulders went up in happiness as she looked all around stopping at one of Fitz with his high school buddies. Fitz came and wrapped his arms around Liv. "You'll learn everything about me here Liv." He kissed her cheek. "First let's go talk to my dad."
They heard the door close, as Gerry entered, and his footsteps walking towards the room. Fitz could just feel something was up, nothing bad, just something, he saw it in Lucia's face.
Back in Rutland the sound of footsteps approaching Edison were much different than the sound of approaching footsteps Liv and Fitz were hearing.
It was going to be a long night.
