Chapter 50
Young Greg had always been his mother's biggest challenge. He wasn't a challenge in a bad way, he wasn't into drugs, or prone to fights at school, it wasn't anything like that. Greg had problems being responsible. Ever since he was able to walk, he did careless things and his mother worried about him.
Greg would take out the garbage as a chore, but forget to close the door, letting the cat out numerous times. Or he would close the door but forget something inside the house that was needed for school or other activities.
Greg's mother would get calls from his teacher saying he forgot to write his name on papers or papers weren't received because he forgot, genuinely forgot to give them to his parents. Yes, Greg needed a bit more guidance than Marcy's other two children, but he was her youngest and she vowed she would get him to where he needed to be one day.
When Marcy's friend Sophie approached her one day while in Sophie's store, they began talking about Greg. "My goodness," Sophie said putting both hands on her cheeks, "I cannot believe your baby is turning 14."
Glancing at the shelf of jarred pickles, Marcy nodded in agreement. "I can't believe it either, seems like yesterday you were driving me to the hospital to have him while Dave was away on conference." Marcy smiled at the memory. "Greg was irresponsible then, coming two weeks earlier than planned, otherwise Dave would never have gone."
Sophie smiled. She knew the hard time Marcy had getting Greg to pay attention to things. It couldn't be brushed off as "he's a boy", Sophie understood it was more than that. "Hey," Sophie gave a pat to Marcy's shoulder, "why doesn't Greg work here for the summer. Abby likes to go away for a few days here and there, I could really use the help around the store."
Marcy's lips curled with concern. "I don't know, Sophie, you know he isn't very responsible when it comes to following directions or following through with tasks." Marcy was shaking her head.
"Oh, come on, give him a chance, just for two hours a day, in the mornings, during summer break. The whole experience may help him a bit when he cuts his first paycheck."
Taking a deep, reluctant breath, Marcy agreed with her lifelong friend. "Ok, Sophie, but only because it's you and I know you will take good care of him."
Sophie gave Marcy a hug. "You won't regret it Marcy, I promise."
Little did Marcy know agreeing to letting her son work a temporary part time job would come to save the life of Ms. Olivia Pope.
Greg had finished loading Liv's trunk with the bags from Sophie's store. On her way to the driver's seat, Liv had dropped her receipt from the store, and it caught Greg's attention. He bent over to get the paper and handed it to Liv.
"Here you go, Ms. Pope, it fell out of your hand. You're good to go." Greg walked around the front of the car and headed back into the store, smiling at being able to get Olivia her receipt before it blew away in the wind. He had no idea he did not close the trunk of the car that was loaded with Liv's bags.
Liv began to pull out of her space, her car's front not being able to quite clear the car in front of her, she needed to reverse. Looking in the mirror, her trunk blocked her view, and she took a deep breath, frustrated breath. "He forgot to close the trunk."
Looking out her driver's side mirror, there wasn't a car in sight, so she put the car in park, leaving the front out ever so slightly, and got out to quickly slam the trunk. The trunk door was too heavy though to do with one hand, and Liv had to move more to the middle of the back of the car and close it.
Within those ten seconds of Liv getting out of the car and going to the back by the trunk, she heard screeching and sirens. Her left hand froze on the top of the trunk, not yet closing it, but looking to see if the sounds were heading in her direction.
She didn't think there would be enough room for the cars to pass with her driver's door being open and her front sticking out. But everything happened so damn fast, Liv blinked and pain shattered her body, a loud crash deafened her ears, and she heard a blood curling scream as she reached for her left arm and fell backwards. She had no recollection if it was her scream or a scream from an onlooker.
Not being too certain what was happening, Liv would see her car flip. She was lying now, grasping her left arm and watching her car, having the driver's side door completely taken off with impact but she was protected behind another parked car, and she just closed her eyes, as her memory brought her back to the day her father died. In the distance, she heard a sound of impact, a loud sound, and her last thought before she lost consciousness was that the driver must be dead.
Fitz jumped from the bed, grabbed a t shirt and bolted out of the bedroom. He grabbed his car key, practically running to the car, and jumped in. A car had blocked his driveway and he couldn't get out, as his tires screeched in reverse.
His mind was a blur, he couldn't think straight. All he kept hearing was Sophie's voice, "there's been a car accident, you want to come quick. Liv was involved."
"Come on, move, FUCKING MOVE!" He screamed at the vehicle blocking he driveway. He was about to reverse right into it, knock the damn car right across the street if he had to.
Lara jumped out of car blocking him in. "FITZ!" She screamed it, holding her hands up and she was grateful the car backing up came to a stop.
"There's been an accident, Lara, I have to get there, it's Liv, I have to…." He stopped holding his head in his hands, "Please just move your car."
"Fitz, get in the car, I'm not letting you drive. Bryce called me, I came right here to get you." Lara held the passenger door open for him and turned off his car.
Lara looked over at him as she sped through the country streets she grew up on. "Fitz, it's going to be ok."
Fitz didn't hear a word she was saying. He was looking out the window, watching the trees speed by. The baby, Livvie, he just kept saying over in his mind. Livvie, her smile, it was all he could see. "Lara, faster."
"Two minutes, Fitz, we'll be there in two minutes." The radio in Lara's car made a sound. It was Bryce on his radio. "Ambulance with paramedics needed on the scene across from Sophies, multiple injuries and one fatality, all units please respond."
Fitz looked down at the radio. "A fatality?" He went to grab it, but Lara grabbed it first. "All available paramedics in the area, please report also." She wasn't going to ask about the fatality, she wasn't even sure. All she knew was Liv's car was in the middle of the street upside down. It could very well be her, but damn if this happened to Fitz, it would break him to pieces.
Lara took a deep breath as she approached the scene. It was a horrific scene and she remembered saying a quick prayer to a God she didn't really go to much. "Oh, dear Lord, let Liv be ok."
Fitz jumped out of the car as it was still moving, moving slowly, but still moving. He looked at the scene, folding his hands on top of head, rubbing them back and forth as he saw Liv's car upside down. The airbag was deployed, so he couldn't see if anyone was inside, he also noticed there was no driver's side door.
"LIVVIE", he screamed as he ran towards the car. Deputy Fisher was about to stop him, but then realized who was involved and he took a step back. "LIVVIE", he went down like he was sliding into second base on a steal and poked his head into the car. She wasn't there.
"Oh, dear God," He began to breathe heavily. He turned and saw a pickup truck smashed to pieces on the brick wall on the opposite sidewalk. Broken glass was everywhere, and Joshua Mackenzie was on the front hood of his car a bloodied, lifeless mess.
Fitz knew he shouldn't have been relieved, but he was. That was the fatality. That body on the top the hood was the fatality, and Bryce said there was one.
"Fitz, over here." He heard Sophie's voice calling to him and he ran towards the store. He was on pure adrenaline, and he hadn't noticed when he slid, he ripped his sweats, and he had a bloody scrape coming from his thigh.
Sophie was kneeling next to Liv, who was barely conscious, her eyes opening and closing and her arm, her left arm a shattered mess. He saw blood on Liv's face, and he went right down by her, rubbing the blood, but noticing she didn't have a scratch on her face.
He began looking around, looking at her head, at her stomach, there was no blood, except on the arm. He took a hard swallow. "Livvie," he whispered. He grabbed her right hand, "Livvie, I'm here." Her head followed the voice she loved so much and turned so she could feel him, her temple resting on his knee as he rubbed her hair.
Jumbo, as he was known in Rutland, was the best paramedic in the town. A skilled paramedic, he's been on the job for many years. He's very well known in Rutland, a senior advisor to every young EMT coming up. Many in Rutland stopped him from retiring, he was too loved.
He raced over when he saw his friend Fitz on the ground next to the woman he loved. He carried a stretcher by himself but called for a wheeling one immediately.
He quickly put Liv's head in a neck brace, sliding the stretcher under her. Fitz grabbed Jumbo's shoulder. "She's pregnant, Jumbo, please, she's pregnant." The tears began to swell up in Fitz's eyes.
"Ok, Fitz, let me take a look ok, you need to just step back, ok, do that for me, just step back." Sophie's arm was around him and she pulled him back a bit.
Looking down at his leg, Sophie pointed. "Fitz, you're bleeding, we need to…."
"I'm fine, Sophie, I'm fine, please, Liv, please." He felt Sophies arm wrap around his waist.
"She's alert Fitz, she escaped the worst of it", Sophie tried to reassure him, but he was a mess.
Jumbo went to lift Liv's shirt, and although she wasn't fully conscious, Liv held the shirt tight. "No" she said loud enough for Jumbo to hear.
"Ms. Pope, I need to cut your shirt, your arm looks broken, I need to free it…"
"No." she said firmly again, and Fitz went above her.
She looked so defeated, so hurt both physically and emotionally. "Livvie, I'm here, it's fine. Let him do what he can, so we can get you to the hospital." He kissed her forehead gently. "Please, baby, just let him…"
"Ok." Liv closed her eyes, as she felt her shirt get removed. Jumbo didn't even flinch at seeing the scars and he continued doing what he needed to do to get Liv's arm secure so she could be lifted onto the stretcher and taken to the hospital.
Jumbo, being as gentle as he could, wiped the blood from the small wound on Liv's arm caused by the scrape of the trunk. He then securely put her in a type of air cast, her arm resting across her chest. Jumbo and his partner, Phil, lifted her onto the stretcher and rolled her into the ambulance with Fitz right behind.
Once situated in the ambulance, Fitz sat next to Phil while Jumbo broke every speed limit law to get to the hospital. Phil took one look at Fitz's leg and said, "Let's get you cleaned up while we have a moment." He began working on cleaning and bandaging Fitz's wound which meant nothing to Fitz, as he caressed Liv's hair, keeping his lips on her forehead.
Sophie stood up next to Greg as they watched the ambulance speed away towards Rutland Medical and Sophie looked up at the young boy. "I left her trunk open, didn't I?" He put his face in his hands.
Sophie pulled his hands down and cupped his face. "You saved her life, she had to get out to close the trunk, you saved her life." She gave him a hug as Greg cried on her shoulder so distraught over the whole scene in front of him.
Dr. Fergueson came out of the small room in the ER where Liv had been taken. Fitz was sitting with his elbows on his knees and his head in his hands. Sophie and Lara had arrived shortly after the ambulance and were both there with him, but Fitz couldn't talk, not until he got news that the baby and Liv were both alright.
Fitz heard a jumble of words coming from the room. He had seen the ultrasound machine be taken in by a nurse and he thought of the appointment they were supposed to have tomorrow for the gender reveal. Now, with his face covered by his hands, he tried to hold back his eyes from filling up with tears.
The whispers coming from Lara and Sophie were clear because they were right beside Fitz. "He was drunk, no doubt about it, there were open bottles of beer in the pickup." Lara was telling Sophie about Josh.
"Dead on impact I would assume." Sophie said. "That pickup pounded that brick wall, there was no chance for any survival."
"He died on impact to the wall, lost control when he took the door of Liv's car…." Lara stopped seeing Fitz look up at them. She cleared her throat. "Sorry, Fitz."
He looked down now at the floor, this was the longest 15 minutes of his life. When the door opened, and the doctor appeared, Fitz jumped up. "Doug." Fitz said. "Fitz had known Doug for a few years. His wife was the realtor Fitz used to buy his current house. "How is Livvie? How is the baby? She didn't lo" He stopped, covering his mouth. He couldn't even ask.
Dr. Fergueson put his hand on Fitz's shoulder. He closed his eyes and opened them as a comfort gesture. "Olivia has a substantial break in her left arm. I'm not looking at surgery just yet, but she's in a splint for now and she will require a cast. It will be painful."
Fitz shook his head. He took a deep breath. "The baby?"
"Fine, Fitz, no problems as far as the ultrasound saw. Dr. Webster will be out shortly. She's taking one more thorough look then you can go in with Olivia."
Looking up to the lights, Fitz covered his eyes with a sigh of relief. He looked back at the doctor. Fitz put his hand out. "Thank you, Doug. "
"Fitz, I think she should be here for two nights, this way we can be certain all is well. Her arm is swollen, and we're not giving her pain medication because of the pregnancy, so she's going to need comfort. We'll go over more later, go to your fiancé." Dr. Fergueson nodded over at Sophie and Lara and left to other patients.
Sophie rested her head on Fitz's shoulder from the back. "She's tough as nails, that Olivia." Sophie closed her eyes with gratitude.
"That she is." Fitz reached back and held Sophie's hand as Dr. Webster called Fitz in.
Liv was sitting up in the bed. She looked a mess, but she was still so beautiful. Her left arm was in a sling fastened tightly to her chest, her diamond ring off on the table next to her, and her eyes glistened and she gave a small, yet sad smile when she saw Fitz walk through the door.
That smile did things to him. He wanted to wrap her up in his arms and just keep her close to him for hours. He couldn't believe she was smiling after all this.
"Hey my Mister." Liv whispered and rubbed his curls when he put his face into the crook of her neck. "I'm ok." She kept gently rubbing, knowing what a wreck he was. Liv didn't really know if she was ok, but figured if she kept telling herself that, she was.
"I thought I lost you." He sobbed the words. "God Livvie, I thought you…" He stopped and just let her hand; her soft touch comforted him. Even though she should be the one getting the comfort, he just needed this for the moment. He lifted his head, cleared his throat and looked at Dr. Webster.
"The baby?" Fitz asked.
Dr. Webster handed them a set of pictures from the ultrasound. "12 weeks along to the day. Strong heartbeat and moving around in there like it's a big swimming pool, the baby is fine. Mom protected the little one well." She smiled. "Now, do you want to know the gender?"
Liv's forehead went to Fitz's. "Do you want to know dad?" Tears beginning to swell in her eyes. "Because I can't wait another minute."
Fitz rubbed her cheek. "Neither can I" Fitz agreed.
Dr. Webster nodded. "Very well. Your baby boy seems to be as strong as his mama in there. No effects or stress at all from the accident. We are going to monitor them for the next two nights. Liv will be able to leave the hospital on Saturday. I want at least 48 hours of monitoring just to be certain. She's going to have a monitor attached to her to hear the baby's heartbeat."
They didn't hear much after Dr. Webster said baby boy as Fitz wrapped his arm around Liv pulling her gently to his shoulder. "A little boy, Livvie." He couldn't hold back the tears now.
Dr. Webster gave them a minute before she repeated herself. "Did you hear, Liv? Two nights here, tonight and tomorrow night, we want to monitor the broken arm and the baby. That strap with the baby's heart monitor will stay around your stomach."
Liv nodded, keeping herself close to Fitz's body, letting herself fall safe in his arm, trying to ignore the pain coming from her left arm. "Yes." Liv said as she pulled back. She too was wiping away some tears that escaped. "I heard, it's fine."
"Ok, how's the arm, are you in much pain?"
"Right now, it's bearable. I'm sure that will change."
"Tylenol will be fine to take, but we don't want much more too powerful for the baby's sake."
"I understand." Liv turned back to Fitz who didn't take his eyes off her.
"I'll leave you two to have some time. You should be moved to a private room within the hour. You've been through an experience, Liv, try to get some rest, ok."
Fitz told her before she left to relay the message to Lara and Sophie that the baby was ok, but not to reveal the gender. Tell them they can go for now and I'll call them when Liv gets moved into the room.
"Good night, Mr. Grant." Dr. Webster left to talk to Sophie and Lara.
Fitz adjusted his body to be in bed with Liv. Half his bottom was over the edge of the bed, but he didn't care. He tucked his shoulder under Liv's neck so she wouldn't have to move much.
Liv tilted her head onto his shoulder feeling him caress her hair. Her right arm reaching his cheek and caressing down. The left arm mobilized against her body. Her head turned now into the crook of his neck.
It was silent for about five seconds, then Liv couldn't hold it in anymore. Why be strong? She was in his arms, the safest place in the world for her, and she blinked a waterfall of tears coming out.
Feeling his head tilt onto hers, he began rubbing the side of her face with his other hand, holding her even closer to his body. "It's ok, Livvie, I'm here. I'm not letting you go." He took a deep breath hearing her cry was crushing his heart, but she had to let it out.
"Don't." Liv stopped and took a sob in. "Don't let my mom know, ok. I want her to get on the plane and be safe here before we tell her anything. She's been crazy with the move back." Liv pulled away from his body and rested her head once again on his chest.
"Whatever you want, Livvie, I won't say anything, what about Huck?" Fitz asked.
Liv nodded. "Yeah, give him a call, tell him what happened. He doesn't have to come right away although I think he'll be on the way here before you stop speaking the sentence." Liv rubbed her eyes, taking some of the tears away and moved back fully to her pillow.
"You must be so uncomfortable; this isn't the biggest of beds." Liv tried to smile, but all she felt was sadness again.
"You don't worry about me." They faced each other now, and he saw Liv's face cringe as she tried to get into a more comfortable position.
"Liv try not to move too much." Between the strap around her stomach, the arm in the sling and air cast, and her emotional state, Fitz wanted so much for her to be resting.
Within a half hour of Dr. Webster leaving, some staff came in to move Liv to her private room. "Mr. Grant, we'll be moving her up to room 573. Give us about a half hour to assess everything, take her vitals, and get her comfortable."
He kissed Liv as she pulled it a bit deeper. "Don't stay away too long, ok." She needed him by her side, this was going to be a long night.
"I promise, I won't. I'm just making some calls." Fitz assured her.
Huck answered on a half ring. "Fitz." He whispered. "You ok, Liv ok?"
"Huck there was an accident, she's fine, the baby is fine."
"See you in a few hours." The line went dead, and Fitz stared at the phone trying to finish his sentence.
"She said not" He looked at the display "to come." He took a deep breath and called Sammy and Monica next.
Assuring everyone he needed to, Fitz asked Bryce to bring some things for him to the hospital and to please take Daisy over to Monica and Sammy or to his house, it didn't matter as long as his furry best friend was taken care of.
Bryce came in shortly after the call, and Fitz saw he had about five minutes left to spare before going up to Liv's room.
Sitting down next to him, Bryce gave him a pat on the back. "You doing ok?"
"I think so." Fitz stared in front of him. "I don't think it totally sank in yet, but hearing they were both alright took a weight off my shoulders."
"I know you don't have your car here; I am available to both of you 24 hours, you hear, don't hesitate to pick up the phone. We are going to tell the girls tomorrow. You think it's ok if they visit. I know Chloe is going to take the news hard."
"Yeah, should be ok, make it later in the afternoon though, Liv needs to get her rest."
"The arm is broken?"
Fitz rubbed his hand down his face. "Yeah, still too swollen to look at, I guess they'll get more pictures when the swelling goes down. What the fuck happened Bryce?" Fitz couldn't hold back anymore.
"Well." Bryce stood up, pacing now. "Joshua Mackenzie spent the night boozing it up at a bar after a fight with is estranged wife. He left telling the bartender he was taking an Uber and he got behind the wheel. I guess he took a wrong turn, and Deputy Andrews saw him doing 70 off the highway exit. He called for backup gave the description and a chase ensued." Bryce stopped.
"What did he do? Turn on to a tiny Main Street? Jesus. He had to be loaded." Fitz grinded his teeth.
"Oh, he was. His alcohol level was off the charts. He turned and by that time four cars were in pursuit of him. Honestly, if it wasn't for Liv's car, he would have kept going onto the country road and had all that open grassland. Thank the Lord Liv was out of the car."
"How the hell did he hit her car, how did her driver's door come off?"
"The kid at Sophie's store, Greg, he left the trunk open after loading all the bags for Liv. I am guessing when Liv tried to pull out, she saw the trunk opened and had to get out, leaving her door open, it's the reason Joshua went across into the brick wall and he nearly decapitated himself." Bryce stopped. "Sorry, didn't mean to get gruesome. But, you'll have to ask Liv, I'm just speculating."
Fitz nodded. He stood up next to Bryce. He gave his friend a hug. "Thank you so much, you and Lara, just." He stopped before he broke down. "I'm heading up to Liv, just don't forget Daisy, ok."
"Got you, Fitz, try to get some rest too, ok. You need any food?"
"No, I'm good." With that his stomach did rumble a bit, he hadn't eaten all day, neither had Liv. He had to change that.
The nurses from the station nodded at Fitz with a small smile. "Just to let you know, Mr. Grant, you won't hear the baby's heartbeat, the monitor sends it out here to us, so don't be concerned. She is sleeping, her vitals are good, blood pressure is a little elevated, nothing to worry about. It's common with the stress her body has been under."
"Thank you. Is it ok if I stay in there for the night."
"Absolutely, there is a reclining chair, not sure how comfortable that will be, but it's fine to stay with her. She may be uncomfortable having limited movement of her body so her arm stays put."
"I understand, thank you." Fitz opened the door to the darkened room. In the middle of a much bigger bed Liv was sleeping peacefully. Her head looked comfortable on the two pillows, the blanket just under her sling, her right arm bent to go above her head, and she was breathing so calmly.
Fitz took a deep breath taking it all in. Just a few hours ago he thought she was dead, thought he lost her and the baby forever. He pulled the recliner closer to her now, not making any sound to wake her. He put his forehead on the bed next to her.
"I wouldn't know what I would've done, Liv." He closed his eyes just being so thankful she came out fine. "That car was a mangled mess." He said softly. She never would have survived, he thought.
He felt her hand rub his head and he looked up at her. "Hey Mister, you can't overthink this."
"I know." He took her hand and kissed it. "Do you want something to eat, you need to eat for you and for the baby."
Liv thought for a moment. He body was just coming down from so much. "Maybe some fruit and some yogurt, a yogurt parfait maybe."
Fitz looked at his phone with a text message. "Handsome, don't let Liv know, I'm on my way there. I want to be there for the ultrasound in the morning. I can uber from the airport."
He looked up at Liv trying not to look so alarmed. "Your mom is here, like in Vermont here."
"What?" Liv cringed as she tried to sit up. "She wasn't due in until tomorrow."
"She's surprising you to be there for the ultrasound."
Liv turned her head. "To make up for not being there for the first one. What are we going to do?"
"I'm going to text her back, I'll have Abby or someone go get her."
"And what bring her to the hospital? Fitz we have to tell her."
"Not over the phone."
"Yes, over the phone. Start with everything is fine."
Liv devoured every ounce of the parfait Fitz got for her from the cafeteria and began to call maya. "Maya, everything is fine, everyone is fine."
"But, handsome, don't beat around the bush, what's going on?"
"There was an accident, Liv broke her arm. We are staying overnight and tomorrow night in the hospital. Bryce is coming, the Sheriff, my best friend."
"I know who Bryce is." She tried to get him through the rest he seemed to be fumbling his words.
"He'll be there to pick you up, in a Sheriff's car. But she doesn't want you to worry Maya."
"Can I talk to her, please?"
"She's afraid of breaking down hearing your voice." Fitz stopped.
"You must be a nervous wreck. I know the feeling Fitz. Hang tight, ok, I'll be there."
"Thank you Maya."
Fitz looked at Liv assuring her Maya took it well. He went next to her on her right side, and she turned her head towards him.
"The impact Fitz, that sound. Fitz, that sound." She began to cry. "I fell backwards because the sound numbed me."
"I understand, Liv, I know what a sound can do."
She blinked down some tears giving a small smile. "You do." She rubbed his cheek. She shook her head. "I thought with the pain in my arm I was hit. I heard glass smashing, and, well…."
He gently took her in his arms, resting her head on his chest as he comforted her. "You're ok though, Livvie."
"I already had a dream about him. About my father and the accident." She raised her right shoulder. "Just stay with me tonight."
"I am, baby, I'm not going anywhere. And when Jumbo had to cut your shirt, I am so proud of how brave you were."
"I looked in your eyes." She looked up at him and his lips came down to hers.
Three small taps on the door and Fitz jumped up to open it. Jumbo, as if he heard himself being spoken about, stood there with a bouquet of pink carnations and a get well balloon.
"Jumbo," Fitz said surprised, "come on in."
"Are you sure, I was just going to leave the flowers and balloon with you."
"No, no, let Liv meet you under better circumstances. You just getting off shift."
"Yeah, that was some scene, I went back after I left Ms. Pope here. I don't know how much more of this I can take." He looked at Olivia.
"Hello Ms. Pope, I'm Jumbo, Peter Reynolds, but since little league a hundred years ago I've been called Jumbo because I was always bigger than all the kids my age. The name just stuck, I guess." He handed her the flowers.
"Thank you, and thank you for taking care of me at the scene." Liv handed the flowers to Fitz. "You kept me calm."
Jumbo blushed, took a hard swallow. "Ma'am, I'm 61 years old, I've seen some things in my life being a paramedic. If I am not being blunt, I can tell how strong you are, because surviving whatever made those scars, well that's bravery and strength."
Liv took Fitz's hand. "Thank you Jumbo, ironically it was a car accident that killed my father, but spared me. My mother helped me through years of physical and emotional pain."
"Strong just like her daughter." Jumbo smiled.
The door swung open and in walked Maya. "Baby girl." Maya cupped Liv's face in her hands, kissing her forehead. "What happened?"
"There was a drunk driver and…"
"The baby is ok." Maya looked at the monitor on Liv.
"HE is fine." Liv smiled and waited for it to register with Maya.
Maya looked at Liv then over to Fitz, back to Liv. "He?" Maya covered her mouth. "You said he?"
"I said he." And Liv began crying all over again. "You were right Mom!"
"As if I'm ever wrong. Broken arm, I see. Are you in pain? Of course you're in pain, you didn't take Tylenol did you? You never take anything for pain, you would rather brave your way through it." Maya still hadn't noticed Liv had a guest.
Wanting to change the subject before she worried Fitz about the pain, Liv introduced Jumbo.
"Speaking of my mother, Jumbo, this is Maya, Maya Pope, my mother."
Maya turned around. She looked up and down at Jumbo and smiled.
"Jumbo was the paramedic on scene that took care of me mom, he got me stable, and calmed me down. They had to take my shirt off to get the arm secure."
"And you were afraid of the damn scars, weren't you?" She never took her eyes off Jumbo.
"Well, yeah, but Jumbo…"
"And, why do they call you Jumbo? I'm hoping it's the answer I'm thinking." Maya put her hand out to greet him and wait for his answer.
"OH MY GOD, MOM! Jumbo I'm..." Liv just stopped and looked at Fitz with her eyebrows raised in shock.
Jumbo laughed. "Well it's a little league name so unless that's what you were looking for."
"Hmm, maybe I'll find out." Maya turned back to Liv. "Baby Girl."
"I know, mom, but seriously I'm ok, I just need some sleep, and Fitz by my side. Go to the house, ok."
"I'll be here first thing in the morning with breakfast, this hospital food will make you sick." Maya kissed her daughter again. "Jumbo, you have a car, want to drive a lost lady home?"
Fitz leaned down to Liv. "I'm going to walk them out, then I'll find out where Huck is. You need to get some rest."
Liv kissed his cheek. "Let Jumbo take mom back to the house." She whispered in Fitz's ear. "I haven't seen her like this. I think there's a spark."
The room finally grew quiet and Liv was left with her thoughts for a short time. She closed her eyes and her father's face appeared. "Dad." She said with a small cry. "I made it through again."
"Of course you did, you're a Pope. You protected my grandson too, he has Pope blood in him."
"I know." Liv smiled. "I'm tired daddy." Liv said it like she was 10 again.
"Baby girl, get your sleep. Fitz will be back soon. You're safe, the baby is safe, and daddy is always here for you."
Liv's eyes remained closed and she was able to fall into a deep sleep, with the quiet of the room and the small beeping sounds of monitors outside her door. She had made it through another obstacle in her life. Her and Fitz coming through stronger as ever. For now she would sleep, and wake up to a new day, thankful for that in a much bigger way tonight.
