Tsuki massaged her forehead. "Iwamoto-sensei, you're a mean teacher." With a heavy sigh, she erased the answers from her math packet. "Why would you give me trigonometry problems if I left before you could teach me."
For the fifth time, Tsuki reread the book's examples, comparing them with her notes. No matter how hard she tried, the correct answer wasn't popping inside her head. Tsuki slumped her shoulders. "Ergh, I have to ask Keiko about this later."
"Good morning, Tsuki," Kurama greeted, entering the living room.
Tsuki closed her notebook and smiled. There was no sight of the bruises and cuts that he endured from Roto. "Good morning, Kurama. How are you feeling today?"
"I'm feeling well. How about yourself?"
"I'm fine, just catching up with homework." Tsuki shifted her stiff neck up and down. "My teachers gave me tons of packets and book reports to do. I'm grateful since I can still graduate on time."
"I understand. My mom wasn't thrilled that I was missing school for a couple of weeks. I was able to convince her with a weekend trip to Ryokan Kurashiki spa," Kurama explained, chuckling. "If you need any assistance, please let me know. I'll be happy to tutor you."
Tsuki's face glowed with her eyes sparkling. "Thanks, Kurama. I appreciate it."
The fox demon walked to the door but suddenly stopped. He turned to face her. "Tsuki, Why don't you accompany me to watch the preliminaries? We can get some breakfast at the cafe on the 1st floor. I was going to ask Hiei, but he's not here at the moment."
"Sure, I'll go with you." Tsuki stood up, gathering her scattered papers and books that were on the table. "Let me just put my things inside my room."
"Great," Kurama walked to the front door. "I'll be waiting outside."
As Tsuki entered the room, Master Genkai sat on the bed, wrapping the rags around her head.
"Good morning, Genkai-sensei," Tsuki acknowledged while she put her books on top of the dresser. She grabbed the white ribbon and put her hair into a long ponytail. "I'll be heading to the stadium to watch the preliminaries with Kurama. Hiei isn't here. And Kuwabara and Yusuke are still sleeping."
Genkai stood up, hands clasped behind her back. "Then I should wait for the dimwit to wake up. I need to have a word with him. That stunt that he pulled with the double spirit gun caused his energy to be blocked."
"I understand. I felt something was off when I was healing his swollen face last night. Hopefully, it's only temporary." Tsuki threw on her boots and checked herself in the mirror. "I'm worried about Hiei too. His arm has gotten worse since Zeru's match."
"I know. The boy may be tough, but he's in critical condition right now. I wouldn't be surprised if he couldn't use his arm anymore." Genkai's tone turned urgent. "Tsuki, keep your eyes open. I know you mean well, but this place is out to get us. Each day doesn't get better. Your grandfather and I learned that a long time ago."
"Ok, I will. I'll see you soon," Tsuki stated before closing the door. Master Genkai didn't need to worry. Grandfather Saito already warned her.
"How's your mother, Kurama?" Tsuki asked as the elevator reached the 1st floor. "I feel like it's been ages since I've last seen her."
Kurama's eyes lit up. "She's doing fine. I talked to her yesterday. Her boyfriend proposed to her not too long ago."
"That's amazing news. Tell her I said congratulations."
"Of course, she asked about you. She wants to know if you, Shizuru, and Keiko wanted to come over for dinner. We can probably do it after this tournament."
"Yes, I would love to." Tsuki imagined Shiori giving her a tight hug like when her mother used to do every time she left the shrine. "I'm sure Keiko and Shizuru would be excited as well."
The Kubikukuri cafe was near the lobby next to the garden. Tsuki smelled the rich aroma of coffee and pastries when they stepped inside. Her eyes glistened at the menu. "Wow, their food sounds tasty. I definitely want to try their milk bread."
"Yes, their pastry is always hot and fresh," Kurama explained. "I look forward to drinking my latte. A fresh cup brightens my morning every time."
Once they ordered, they took a seat next to the open window, displaying a full view of the garden. In the middle of the surrounding flowers, numerous koi fishes swam in the elegant large pond.
"So you said Hiei left a while ago?" Tsuki asked.
"Yes, he must have snuck out after you finished talking to him. When I came back to the room, the window was wide open."
Oh no. Tsuki's eyebrows 's the last thing he should be doing right now. "Is Hiei always so cold and distant? I know he isn't used to people caring for him, but he needs help. His arm isn't getting better."
Kurama glanced at the gardenia being trim by a gardener. "Yes, Hiei is standoffish. Believe me. I've known him for years. He's the type of guy to deal with his problems alone. Our relationship wasn't rainbows and sunshine either. It took him a while to trust me."
"Tsuki and Kurama, your order is ready," the barista woman announced.
Kurama got up from his seat. "I'll get it."
"Thanks," Tsuki smiled. Kurama was such a gentleman. The woman blushed after he thanked her for the food and drinks. He grabbed some napkins and headed back to the table.
"Your lavender matcha tea smells amazing," Kurama complimented as he placed their drinks on the table. "I can tell they put fresh lavender from their garden."
Tsuki eyed his plate. "Your croissant looks tasty. I have to try it before we leave here." She waited for Kurama to settle before sipping her tea. "Yum, you're right. This tea is amazing. It's so creamy and floral. How's your hazelnut latte?"
"Delicious," Kurama answered. "Frankly quite better than the latte that I ordered from the cafe next to my school."
The jazz background music calmed Tsuki's ears while they ate their bread in silence. She tapped her foot and allowed the water flowing from the pond to ease her mind.
"Kurama," Tsuki spoke after she wiped her mouth. "How did you meet Hiei?"
"I met him when I was in elementary. A demon named Yatsude kidnapped my nice classmate. He caused a lot of chaos in my neighborhood. Hiei was searching for Yukina around that time and assumed that Yatsude had her. We worked together to kill him."
"Interesting, I'm surprised you and Hiei have been allies for so long. You guys seem so different back when we first met."
Kurama smiled. "I'm a demon, Tsuki. I have done things in my past that I'm not proud of. We know who to ally with for a common interest."
"Well, I'm just glad we have a common goal to survive the Dark Tournament." Tsuki studied her tea, swishing the liquid around absently. "From what I witnessed yesterday, these opponents are ludicrous and deadly."
"You're right. Hiei might not admit it, but Zeru was a powerful opponent. He used the dark dragon technique as a desperate move." After placing his cup down, Kurama crossed his arms. "I'm afraid Hiei may never use that arm again."
Tsuki shook her head. "There has to be a way to help him. If Hiei was able to survive, then I believe his arm can heal."
"Maybe so. Hiei is the first demon to wield the dark dragon." Kurama's face softened. "Your healing abilities could also aid with his arm. It did wonders on Yusuke and Kuwabara."
"Yes, I'm proud of my progress, but I have lots to learn. Starting from the beginning is tough." Tsuki glanced at the pond. In the corner of her eye, she noticed a fountain spouting water near the lavender bush. "I want to heal people like my great-grandmother did years ago. Reading her journals makes me smile. She did everything in her willpower to make people feel better."
"Hmmm, maybe you can expand your mind on different healing techniques," Kurama recommended. "I have a book that consists of the Demon World's healing remedies. And once we finished watching the preliminaries, we can scavenge the island for some herbs."
Tsuki beamed. "That'll be wonderful." It'll give her plenty of time to get better acquainted with the fox demon. His wisdom was beyond her years living in the Human World.
Kurama checked his phone. "We should get going. I really want to see Team Rengu vs Dr. Ichigaki Team. Whoever wins that match will fight against us tomorrow."
"Alright, let's go." Tsuki helped Kurama place the dishes on top of the counter. They waved goodbye to the barista, exiting out. The stadium was only a few miles away from the hotel.
The peace of the morning soothed Tsuki while they strolled deep into the enchanting forest. The further they went, the more mystical and spellbinding it became.
Tsuki smiled as lidth jays chirped high in the canopy of trees. Nature was at its peak, blending the wild blooms with various shades of green. The forest beauty always comforted her heart.
"This island is so breathtaking," Tsuki complimented, staring at the clear blue sky. "It's a shame they're wasting it on this awful tournament."
"Yes, nothing compares to nature's healing and beauty."
Tsuki frowned when they arrived at the clearing where the trees fell away. The opened blue sky revealed the ominous clouds that surrounded the stadium. God, she wanted to flee from this depressing nightmare.
"Look! It's Kurama and Tsuki!"
"I don't know why they bother! They're going to die by the next round!"
The demons glared daggers at them. They crept closer, giving Tsuki and Kurama a few inches to maneuver.
Tsuki proceeded behind Kurama. A cold chill crept up her spine, raising the hair on the back of her neck. She halted with her chest heaving.
A three-eye demon emerged from the crowd, wrapping his icy fingers around her wrist. "She smells so delicious!"
"Let go of me, demon!" Tsuki jerked her arm, but his grip tightened.
The demon's mouth dripped with saliva, revealing his vampire teeth. "I just want a tast-ACK!"
A rose struck the demon's head. Tsuki broke away from his hand and stepped back. The demon's body crumpled silently to the floor.
Kurama's eyes were dangerous. "Here's my warning to all of you. Touch her, and you'll die." He stood next to the priestess while the crowd shrunk back. "Come on, Tsuki."
Tsuki nodded and strolled side by side. I have to be more careful. She rubbed her wrist as red markings appeared. These crazy demons aren't my allies.
The security guards grunted when they came close, allowing them to pass their stronghold.
Kurama held the door for Tsuki. "I'm sure as a highly attune spiritual woman, you're overwhelmed with this dark and filthy energy."
"Yes, it can be very draining." Tsuki's face broke into a smile. "At least I have people that support me."
"I feel the same way. It's fortunate to have people that you can trust."
They headed upstairs to the last row. Some demons gave them a dirty look while they stood in their spot.
"Are you fine watching from this view?" Kurama asked.
Tsuki nodded, observing the clean-up crew dumping the dead bodies from the last match inside a wheelbarrow. Two of the workers wiped the blood away from inside the ring. "I'll be okay. It'll just be hard to hear."
"Of course. Humans don't have the same hearing range as demons. I'll let you know the important parts of the match."
"Thank you."
The crowd came back to life when Koto stepped into the arena.
"Looks like the fans are ready for more blood, gore, and guts!" The fox lady announced. "Welcome to the last match before our big event! Let's give it up for Team Rengu!"
The demon team appeared from the waiting area. Four of the members' energies weren't spectacular. However, the enormous bull's energy was strong and aggressive.
"Next to come in the ring is Team Dr. Ichigaki!"
What a monstrous man. Tsuki shivered at the doctor's horrendous presence. The ghoulish demon's eyes glinted with malice as he laughed maniacally. Two demons behind him were nothing special, but there was a powerful energy coming from the three humans.
A weird substance was attached to the humans' back. It reminded her of a leech, sucking their prey's blood.
"Is there a problem, Tsuki?" Kurama inquired, observing her scrutinized face.
"It's Dr. Ichigaki's team. I believe those three fighters walking last are human," Tsuki studied the fighters' bloody and soulless eyes. "There's something wrong with them. It's like their soul is locked inside a dark prison."
The fox demon stared at the fighters. "Yes, they seem human to me. And they're the only ones wearing that substance."
Dr. Ichigaki and the one eye bull met in the middle. They nodded to Koto after agreeing on their fighting terms.
"Alright, they're going to have a one-on-one battle! Best out of three will win the match!" Koto declared. "Let's begin the first round!"
The elf demon and the orange hair boy entered the ring.
"Ea Team Rengu and M1 Dr. Ichigaki Team! Fight!" Koto commanded.
Ea lunged with his claws out. M1 jumped away from his strike, generating rings around his arms.
Tsuki focused her eyes on M1's rings as he tossed them. Four disappeared while the remaining two quickly flew at Ea. Interesting, four of them are an illusion.
Ea dodged the first ring, but he didn't have time to duck. The last one sliced his head completely off.
"Amazing!" Koto twirled as the audience applauded. "It's over within seconds! Next round!"
"Oh my," Tsuki's eyes widened. The boy took his opponent's head, dropping in front of the doctor's feet. "That was fast."
"Indeed," Kurama agreed. "It didn't take long at all."
The Rengu Team jaws clenched. While the older human with the long braid came in the ring, the grey demon growled and jumped inside.
Koto gave the signal. "M2 Dr. Ichigaki Team and Baal Team Rengu! Fight!"
Using his spiritual energy, M2 created a long spear and sprinted at Baal.
The demon skirted and soared upwards. His leg aimed for M2's face.
M2 held the spear up to his ear. He stepped forward, thrusting his weapon at Baal.
"Wow! Another fatal blow!" Koto declared as the spear pierced Baal's face. The demon dropped to the ring.
"They're experienced fighters, Kurama," Tsuki informed. She cringed when M2 slit Baal's neck. "Their spiritual powers are amazing."
"Right, I wonder how they got wrapped up with Dr. Ichigaki."
"Let's continue with the round!" Koto announced. The green demon from Rengu's team stepped in. "Will Dr. Ichigaki's team take the next match?! Or will their killer luck run out?!"
The bull demon's veins popped on his neck and arms. He snorted loudly when the human with a scar met his teammate in the middle.
"M3 Dr. Ichigaki Team vs. Niko Team Rengu! Fight!" Koto ordered.
Niko threw punches at M3's gut.
M3 took a few and used his arms to block the rest. The demon retaliated with a sidekick.
M3 grabbed his leg before it could make contact with his stomach. His glowing red hand clamped Niko's throat, delivering a tight squeeze.
Tsuki gasped from the brutality and touched her neck. The demon's head popped out like a balloon.
M3 lifted Niko's head in the air. The crowd roared instantly.
"That's what I called entertainment!"
"Yes! Cut Yusuke's head off tomorrow!"
Koto flicked her hair. "It's over in seconds yet again! And with another decapitation! I must admit! I'm getting attached to the move! No pun intended!" She carried on. "Alright, that's three wins! Dr. Ichigaki Team will advance to the next match!"
"You're right, Tsuki," Kurama spoke. "Something isn't right about those humans. They don't even have names."
Tsuki scowled, watching M3 flung the demon's head in their growing pile. The doctor howled as M3 stood robotically in the middle of his teammates. "Dr. Ichigaki is a maniac. He doesn't care about those fighters. He's using them for their spiritual powers."
"MOOOOOO!" The bull demon kicked his last quivering teammate and advanced in the ring.
Koto shrieked when the bull demon towered over her. "AAAAAAIEEEEAAAAA!"
"Close your mouth, little woman!" The bull demon's voice boomed. "This battle is not over!"
"Sorry, big boy!" Koto's tail wagged up and down. "It actually is! The terms were best out of three!"
He stomped, glowering at Dr. Ichigaki's team. "But I haven't gotten to fight yet! So it's not over!"
Koto avoided his long leg and dashed out of the ring. "AHHHHHHH, have it your way!"
Tsuki's grip tightened on the rail. This fight was going to end horribly.
The bull demon kicked his leg back twice and bolted. "MOOOOOOOO! You have unleashed the fury of the Buru!"
The doctor laughed menacingly while his human fighters jumped in. M1's razor-sharp rings and M3's claw cut the bull's arms like butter.
"AAAAARGHHHH!" Buru kneeled. His blood poured into the ring.
M2 stood in front of him and slashed downward, slicing Buru's head clean off.
The crowd cheered from the fatality. Buru's body tumbled backward with his head toppled out of the ring.
Tsuki's face twisted with disdain. There were no emotions when the fighters attacked. They were human robots undergoing Dr. Ichigaki's sinful bidding.
"Well, that's over!" Koto announced. "Let's have the crew clean up this bloody mess!"
"At least we know what we're up against," Kurama disclosed. "Next is Toguro and the Spirit Warriors."
While the clean-up crew did their job, Tsuki gazed at the audience. Her eyes twinkled as she spotted familiar faces coming from the exit. She pointed across. "There's Yusuke, Kuwabara, Botan, and the masked fighter. I guess they wanted to watch Toguro's match too."
Koto sashay across the ring. "Before we get to the good stuff. Let's see our progress so far." She turned to the large screen. "The advancing team of the first massacre are the Urameshi Team, Dr. Ichigaki Team, Team Mashotsukai, Team Gokai 6, Team Uraotogi, The Gorenja Team, and Team Kaido! There's only one more slot for the second round, and our next two teams are about to fight for it!"
"Toguro! Toguro! Toguro!" The audience chanted.
"That's right, people! So warm up your scream voices because these next fighters are going to have us knee deep in the slaughter!"
Kurama fixed his gaze onto the younger Toguro and the demon woman emerging from the waiting area. "That's odd. Only two of them are fighting in this match."
Tsuki couldn't take her eyes off the demon woman. The royal blue dress and high heel boots complimented her hourglass figure. With her long violet hair and flawless olive skin, the demon woman gracefully strolled to the ring.
"Aw, yes! The team that doesn't need any introduction! The resident badass of the tournament, Toguro! And their latest member, the dark goddess, Kana!"
The crowds' claps amplified the entire stadium that lasted more than a minute.
"Kana, we love you!" a demon yelled. He and other Kana fans had their own large section in the middle row.
A demon girl whistled. "You go, girl! Show those male demons who's boss!"
Kana waved to the audience. When she spotted Tsuki, the demon woman smiled brightly at her.
Tsuki acknowledged her, but she didn't wave back. Kana seemed like a nice girl. And she hadn't done anything to her personally. However, she was on Toguro's team. They were bound to cross paths sooner or later.
Tsuki observed Toguro staring to his right. She followed his eyes and landed on Yusuke's tensed face.
The spirit detective stared fiercely at the grinning Toguro. Tsuki didn't blame him. Toguro forcefully brought all of them into this hellhole.
"But the defending champions may not have an easy time with this team!" Koto announced. "Here are the Spirit Warriors!"
Their spiritual energy glowed, resembling the bright sun. The demon giants loomed the tall Toguro and the average size Kana.
They met in the middle. After the bald demon and younger Toguro exchanged a few words, Tsuki noticed Kana's brown eyes shot an icy glare at the demon captain. Her purple aura swirled as she became sinister by the second.
"What did the captain say, Kurama?" Tsuki asked.
"He asked why Toguro would bring a woman to fight in a 2 vs. 5 battle," Kurama informed. "If he was going to insult them like this, he should've brought a male member at least."
"Are you sure, Toguro?!" Koto questioned. The giants were already in their fighting stance.
Toguro nodded. He and Kana stood tall while the giants circled them.
Koto rushed out of the way and performed a signal. "Spirit Warriors vs. Team Toguro! Begin!"
The sumo demon stomped twice, causing cracks to form around the arena. Tsuki took a step back while the ground quake.
"Interesting, these warriors take advantage of their large bodies to channel greater spiritual energy," Kurama explained. "Even with that, it seems that Toguro and Kana aren't fazed."
Tsuki gasped when Toguro increased his demonic power, transforming into a heavy-weighted man. "What percentage is he using Kurama? His energy is stronger compared to when we first fought him."
"45%," Kurama stated. "Remarkable, though I'm curious to see what that demon woman is going to do."
Kana's hand glowed while the sumo demon lunged at them. She flicked her fingers, causing him to stop midway.
The sumo demon floated in the air until he reached the stadium roof. "Release me at once, you witch!" His arms and legs fluttered.
Kana's lips curled upwards. Her smile betrayed all of her innocence. She balled her fingers, thrusting her arm down with one swift movement.
"AHHHHH!" An invisible force speedily pulled the sumo demon down. In seconds his body busted in the ground, blood and organs splattering everywhere.
Tsuki gripped the rail as the stadium shook. "Ewww." Her hand covered her mouth while the front audience wiped the demons' parts from their faces.
The one horn demon swung his spikes aimed at Kana's head. Toguro caught it, pounding the demon in his stomach. He yowled with his guts splashing out, collapsing to the ground.
The shark and short hair demon sprinted at them. Kana used her demonic energy to create a two-tail whip. Her eyes blazed murderously while her weapon sliced the short hair demon's legs off.
"AUGHHH!" He cried. Before his upper body landed on the ring, Kana proceeded by slashing his arms, and lastly, his head.
"Such sinister power. Her energy is phenomenal," Kurama complimented.
"She's using her emotions to create dark energy," Tsuki explained. Her great-grandmother was right. The darker the wielder is, the more powerful they become.
After Toguro punched the shark's stomach, he and Kana turned to the last demon standing in their way.
Tsuki covered her eyes as the bald demon charged his energy. "Amazing, so he was the one with the powerful rays."
"His energy is strong, but I don't think it'll be enough to kill those two," Kurama stated. "They're on a different level."
The bald demon speedily swung his ax. Kana glided out of the way while Toguro kept dodging his attack.
"I'm destined to win this fight!" The demon roared. He smirked when his ax pierced deep into Toguro's shoulder.
The blade bounced back. Younger Toguro returned the smirk and grabbed the sharp object, shattering it.
The giant trembled, stepping back. "I was supposed to kill Yusuke Ur-UGH!" He tried to break free from the whip, but Kana squeezed his neck tighter.
Toguro muttered something before pounding him. By both forces, the demon's body split three ways.
"Toguro! Toguro! Toguro!" The crowd cheered, giving them a standing ovation.
"Wow, the Toguro Team is the winner!" Koto jumped high and spun. "Five consecutive kills by the big man and dark goddess!"
Tsuki gulped. She had an unpleasant taste in her mouth. "Kurama, what was Toguro's words to the captain?"
The fox demon swallowed hard. "He said that Yusuke was reserved for him."
Toguro and Kana high fived each other, exiting out of the ring. As Kana waved to the audience, Toguro eyed Yusuke.
Kuwabara and Yusuke trembled. Fear and anger flash through them.
Don't worry, guys. I'm frightened too.
Kana's face softened when she glanced at Tsuki again. She waved goodbye while her and Toguro disappeared inside the waiting area.
Kurama balled his fists. "We're in trouble. And it looks like Kana is very interested in you, Tsuki."
"I can see that." Tsuki felt the cold sweat coming from her forehead. "And I don't know how I should feel about it."
"Hey Keiko, it's Tsuki," the priestess announced with a knock. "May I please come in?"
Keiko opened the door. "Hey, Tsuki." Her friend embraced her while smiles lightened their faces.
"Do you have any nail polish?" Tsuki asked, entering the room. "I haven't had time to paint my nails since the whole training session."
"I sure do. It's on the dresser. Botan and I did our toes during our first night here," Keiko placed the school books inside her luggage. "How's your homework coming along?"
"It's ok," Tsuki grabbed the coffee brown polish and settled on the floor next to Keiko's bed. "I'm a little confused on the trigonometry problems, but Kurama offered to tutor me if I have any questions."
Keiko grabbed her nail kit and sat next to Tsuki. "That's great. I'm confused on that part as well. We probably can have a study session together."
"That'll be fun. We can even go to the hotel's cafe," Tsuki proposed, clipping her fingernails. "They have nice pastries that'll melt in your mouth."
"Nice! Do you know this hotel has a spa too? I went downstairs to go in the jacuzzi last night. It was very refreshing."
"What? No way. This hotel is awesome." Tsuki sighed while she filed her nails. "I miss this, Keiko. I miss not worrying about anything. I wish we were on an actual vacation. Not preparing to fight four times in this tournament."
Keiko blinked rapidly. "Four times? That's horrible! How are the guys feeling?"
"The boys have been tense ever since we came from the stadium. Our chances of winning are low. And that's not our only problem." Tsuki's lip tightened as she continued. "Hiei is missing and badly injured. Yusuke can't use his spirit gun. Kuwabara had a sad dream about the human fighters we're fighting tomorrow. And a screwy woman on Toguro's team has taken an interest in me."
"God, this tournament is evil." Keiko stroked Tsuki's back. "Don't worry. You guys aren't alone in this."
"I know." Tsuki grinned. "It feels great having you and Shizuru be our cheerleaders. How come you didn't eat with us last night? We missed your presence, especially Yusuke."
"I didn't want to interrupt him." Keiko pursed her lips in a pout. "He seems to be having a great time fighting those crazy demons."
"Yeah, this tournament showed a different side of Yusuke. I shouldn't be surprised. He's been fighting ever since elementary."
"I'm scared for him, Tsuki." Keiko's eyes water while she hugged her legs. "He's going to get killed if he keeps fighting like this."
"That's the price we have to pay, Keiko." Tsuki checked her nails, opening the polish top. "Being a shrine maiden isn't easy either. I'm going to have to deal with a lot of dark entities even after this tournament."
"I know. And it makes me worried about you too. You're a tough girl, Tsuki."
"Thank you, and you're strong for coming to this island. Yes, Yusuke loves fighting, but he enjoys spending time with you."
"Yeah, I love spending time with him too." Keiko abruptly stood and scowled at the ceiling. "But I'm going to kill him for not answering my calls or texts for two months! Especially after we had our date!"
Tsuki chuckled, remembering she forced Yusuke to say hello to Keiko during their 1st day of training. "Yusuke is lucky to have you. You have a lot of patience to deal with his mess."
"Of course! Relationships aren't easy. It takes a lot of effort and understanding from one another. You'll see when you find a guy that you like."
"Well, when I finally do." Tsuki placed the polish down, waiting for her left hand coat to dry. "You'll be the first one to know."
"You have time. I was just fortunate enough to meet Yusuke early." Keiko beamed, settling back down. "And, I know he'll be lucky to have you. You have a good heart, Tsuki."
"Thanks, Keiko. I'm so glad you're here."
"Tsuki, it's Kurama," the fox demon pounded on their door. "I need to have a word with you."
Tsuki lifted her head and glanced at the clock. It was 5:45 am. How odd. They were supposed to be at the stadium by 9.
She arose and yawned, turning on her lamp. "Just a second." Tsuki gave an awakened Master Genkai a reassuring nod and walked to the door.
Tsuki peeked her head out. "Is something the matter?" She asked, observing his tensed face.
Kurama smiled. "My apologies for waking you, but Hiei still hasn't come back. Will you accompany me to search for him? I don't want the others to worry. We should make it to the stadium before our match."
Tsuki inhaled a sharp breath. She pictured an injured Hiei lying unconsciously on the ground. "Yes, I'll help you. Let me get dressed. I'll be ready in 20 mins."
"Alright, I'll be sitting in the living room."
Tsuki grabbed her clothes from inside the dresser. "We'll meet you and the boys at the stadium," she told Master Genkai. "Kurama and I are going to look for Hiei."
Genkai stretched her arms. "Then you better hurry. The match will start soon," she stated, twisting her body. "I'll make sure the morons don't do anything stupid. Be careful out there."
"Ok, you too." Tsuki headed to the bathroom. After a quick pamper, she strolled to the living room.
"Here, I asked room service to give us some snacks." Kurama gave her an apple, granola bar, and bottle of water.
"Thanks," Tsuki swallowed some of her water. "Do you know where he could be?"
"No, but that shouldn't be a problem. We can start by walking to the beach. That's where I smelled Hiei last time."
The sky was rosy pink while they walked casually to the cliff. There was no sign of Hiei.
Kurama sniffed the air. "He was here, but his smell is fading. I believe he went deep in the forest to avoid everyone." He proceeded to the left. "I appreciate you coming with me. Hiei's condition could be worse than we expected."
"No problem, let's just hope we don't have to walk too far." Tsuki touched her heart, gazing at the sea. I hope you're alright, Hiei.
The sun shine brighter in the forest landscape. After a few turns and dead ends, Kurama sighed in relief.
"He's close. His smell is getting stronger."
A large crow landed on the tree branch and spread its wings. "CAW! CAW! CAW!"
Tsuki halted. The crow's black eyes pierced her soul. She couldn't suppress the body shiver that rattled her spine.
Kurama peered back. "What's wrong, Tsuki?"
Tsuki wrapped her arms around herself. "I have a feeling that something bad is about to happen."
"Don't worry. I'm here to protect you." Kurama reassured, touching her shoulder. "You have nothing to fear."
Tsuki nodded, continuing on their path. Kurama's words soothed her, but she couldn't disregard her sinking gut.
A few steps away, they spotted Hiei wincing as he limped towards their direction.
Tsuki shook her head and frowned. There were dark circles beneath Hiei's tired eyes.
"Ugh," Hiei's moan dreaded her ears. He kneeled and held his withered arm. The bacterial infection was spreading to his hand.
"Is this wise, Hiei?" Kurama inquired in a stern voice, coming closer.
Hiei jerked up and puffed out his chest. "What do you mean?"
"It would be difficult to keep winning without the use of your dominant hand. Perhaps you should withdraw," Kurama suggested.
"Hmph, you heard what Toguro said. We don't have a choice. He'll kill us if we don't make it through this tournament."
Tsuki folded her arms. "If you understand that, then why are you being so selfish? We need you in top shape! Not agonizing in pain!"
"Tsuki," Hiei began, his eyes fixed on hers. "I may be injured, but I can take care of myself. My matters don't concern you."
"There you go being a jerk again! This isn't about your pride! You look horrible! Your arm needs medical at-" Tsuki paused. She heard footsteps crumbling the grass and turned. Two demons appeared near her view.
M4 and M5 from Dr. Ichigaki's team smiled evilly. They stopped walking when Hiei and Kurama stood in front of Tsuki.
Tsuki touched her knotted stomach. M4 and M5's energy was low compared to their human teammates. She shouldn't be trembling by their power.
Kurama revealed his rose, transforming it into a whip. "It seems the doctor team had gotten lost."
"Yes, what a horrible coincidence for all of us," Hiei stated, taking out his sword.
M4 ran with claws and tongue sticking out. "Gsss!"
Tsuki flinched as Kurama and Hiei slashed the leopard multiple times. His body parts disbanded to the ground.
"Hmph, and that was using my left arm, Kurama," Hiei confidently declared.
"I'm sorry," Kurama commented. "Next time, I'll use my left hand to be fair."
M5 eyes widened. "What the hell?!"
"Would you like to try us next?" Hiei extended his sword out.
"Thanks, but I rather not." The tiger demon took out a remote and pressed the button. "Death gives me the shivers."
Tsuki gulped. An enormous robot appeared from the bush. Its body moved forward with jerky movements, knocking the trees out of its way.
"Gatasubal is what we like to call him," M5 informed. "One of the doctor's earlier projects. Part demon, part machine. It has no feelings, no pain, and no fear."
Shock crossed Tsuki's face as M4's body parts wiggled on the ground. One by one, his body was being put back together like a deranged puzzle.
"Kurama! Hiei! Behind you!" Tsuki called.
M4 movements were insanely fast compared to last time. His long tail tripped Hiei, and his bloody hand gripped Kurama's whip.
Hiei lunged, but the demon tugged Kurama forward, clashing them against each other. With one swift kick, M4 pushed them onto a tree.
Tsuki concentrated her spiritual energy. She blinked excessively when her bracelet didn't transform. Tsuki tried again, but all her hand felt was air.
What?! I can't use my powers! She watched helplessly as M4 clawed Kurama's chest and grabbed Hiei's charred arm.
"Argh!" Hiei's sword aimed at his throat, but the demon leaned back and kicked him in the stomach.
"Perfect! They'll be killed within seconds!" M5 vividly stared at Tsuki and pointed. "Go, Gatasubal! Capture the priestess!"
Tsuki stepped back, feeling the blood draining from her face. The robot's arms lunged. She forced herself out of her daze and dashed to the right.
Pushing her arms back and forth, Tsuki jetted while the sting of branches hit her face. The uneven ground made it difficult to run faster. She glanced in all directions, swerving through tree after tree.
The sound of her heartbeat filled her ears. Tsuki gulped and dared to glance back. The arms continued their chase. Without watching her step, Tsuki's boot twisted in the tree root. The sharp, tearing pain grabbed her attention. She instantly fell.
"Ahhh!" Tsuki turned over, clutching her foot. She lifted herself but collapsed.
The priestess's eyes widened when the Gatasubal's hand loomed over her. She tightly closed her eyes, covering her head.
Strong arms wrapped around her body as she rolled on the ground. Tsuki took a deep breath and opened her eyes.
Hiei hovered her. "Are you alright?" He stared at Tsuki, his eyes tight with worry.
"I'm fine." Tsuki moved her feet and winced. The pain shot up in her leg. "My ankle is sprained. I can't walk." She gasped as the robot's arms sprang at them.
Hiei lifted her with his burnt arm and winced. "Hold on tight." After Tsuki wrapped her arms around his neck, Hiei jumped out of the way.
Gatasubal pursued behind. Hiei's quick movement gave them enough distance to escape.
"Hiei! Tsuki!" Kurama ran. He turned left as one of the robot's arms chased him.
Hiei slashed the other arm with his sword. He scowled when he spotted no damage. "Tch, not even a scratch."
M5 laughed from his effort. "Gatasubal whole body is covered with a special formula made out of hybridize metal, combining the hardest steel with the actual living cells. No substance in the world could break it!"
Hiei soared to M5. "Maybe I can't kill the beast, but at least I can kill you!"
"Hiei, behind you!" Tsuki yelled. Gatasubal's arm rushed behind them.
"Augh!" The robot's arm hit Hiei's back, causing his sword to drop. He turned around to catch Tsuki's fall.
Tsuki was paralyzed with shock when they landed on the ground. Hiei's arm loosened from her, rolling over in pain.
"Excellent, Gatasubal! Now, kill the fool!" M5 ordered.
Tsuki felt dizzy from breathing off the top of her lungs. She watched in horror as Gatasunal grabbed Hiei, slamming him against the tree.
"Hiei!" Tsuki gazed desperately at her hand. Her wired and emotional energy concentrated hard on summoning her divine bells. Her efforts were to no avail. Her bracelet wasn't changing.
"Hahahaha! Do you see the genius of the doctor's work?!" M5 stated. "It has no feelings or thoughts to abstract! Its only desired to kill!"
"I can appreciate that." Hiei's hand blaze a dark flame.
"Hiei, don't!" Kurama sprinted towards him, allowing the robot's arms to collide with each other.
While Hiei dropped down from the tree, the arms smashed against Kurama.
"Kurama!" Tsuki and Hiei yelled while dust filled the air.
"Perfect! Now kill the other one so we can deliver the priestess to the doctor!" M5's mouth gaped when the robot didn't move. "What's wrong with you?! I said kill!"
The dust disappeared. A sob of relief escaped from Tsuki's lips. Her demon friend was alright.
Kurama stood between the robot's arms. "You were wrong on two accounts," he stated. His rose whip slithered inside the robot's circuit.
"I'm wrong?! What do you mean?! What just happened?!" M5 questioned, sweat dripping from his face.
Kurama gave him a death stare. "Even the hardest substance can be broken when crushed into itself. And the ability to feel pain is not a weakness. It's a strength," he explained. "Pain tells a creature its vulnerabilities, and not expose them to attacks. Your robot is dead, and so are you."
"I think I'm good." M5 sprinted. "Like I said before, death creeps me out!"
"Finally!" Tsuki smiled when her bracelet transformed. With a shot of her beam, M5 tumbled.
Hiei stood facing M5 in an instant. He roughly grabbed his collar and punched him in the face.
"Now tell me, you imbecile. Why did the doctor attack us?"
"P-please d-don't hurt me! Dr. Ichigaki knew he had a low chance of winning if you and Kurama were in the stadium! He wanted to make sure he would get Yusuke and Tsuki's body!"
Tsuki took off the boot and touched her swollen ankle. "I knew the doctor was a sick and twisted demon! How did he get those human fighters to join his team?"
"I-i'm n-not sure!"
"Wrong answer." Hiei punched him in the nose.
Blood poured out of M5's nostrils. "H-he poisoned their master! Dr. Ichigaki allowed them to think that he had the antidote to heal him! He just needed them to do a simple experiment!"
"In other words, he tricked them." Tsuki glared at M5. "Kuwabara's dream was right. The human fighters are in danger."
"Yes, and with the stakes being high, I assume their master is on this island," Kurama remarked.
Hiei threw more punches at M5's face. "Yes, that's very good. Now tell us where he is?!"
"I-I-I don't remember exactly. In some cave!"
"What cave?" Hiei bared his teeth as he shook him. "Your tail is next if you don't speak up!"
"M-mitamura is in Dr. Ichigaki's secret laboratory. It's only two miles from here!"
"Well, we better start walking." Hiei dragged M5, grabbing his sword. He pointed his weapon at M5's back. "Lead the way."
Kurama kneeled next to Tsuki. "How's your ankle?" He asked in a gentle voice.
Tsuki moved her feet. The agony had faded to a dull throb. "Better, but I still need time to heal it. I can do it after we go to the laboratory."
"Good, the robot will carry us there." Kurama grabbed Tsuki's hand, lifting her. "My whip found a way to move his body."
The cave was near the cliff by the ocean. M5 led them to an open area where a steel door blocked their entrance.
"Open the door, M5," Hiei ordered.
M5 hurriedly pressed the buttons, sliding the door open. "He's in here! I swear, Hiei!"
Hiei grabbed his neck. "I know, and that's why you're not needed anymore," he announced, dropping M5 off the cliff.
"Ahhhh!" M5 screams echoed until it abruptly stopped.
Kurama slashed the alarm system with his whip. "We better hurry. We need to get back to the stadium."
Dr. Ichigaki's laboratory had tons of gadgets and gizmos. Tsuki's feet lifted carefully over the drying breaker, passing a chemistry set. On the long table laid Mitamura.
Tsuki immediately came to his side. There were rashes covering Mitamura's arms and neck. His breath shortened as he moaned.
The priestess touched Mitamura's forehead. "He's burning up." She closed her eyes and allowed her energy to flow through his body. "There's something weird circulating in his blood. Like a piece of lead."
Kurama checked the table. "That vile doctor." He showed a white flower to them. "He used a demon plant to poison him. I'm surprised he's still breathing. These Lilium flowers can be deadly."
Tsuki's hand dropped to her side. Mitamura's breath returned to normal. She gloomed at his sick state. "Is there a way to help him, Kurama?"
"Yes, I can make a quick antidote." Kurama headed to the door. "I'll retrieve the herbs. It won't take too long."
Tsuki finished healing her ankle while they waited. Hiei stood behind her in his trance of thought.
After Tsuki put on her boot, she turned to face him. "Hiei, thank you for rescuing me. That robot would've had me if it wasn't for you."
"Don't worry about it." Hiei looked at her, a penetrating stare that caused her heart to jump. "What happened back there? That wasn't like you to run away."
"My powers stop working. I wasn't able to wield my divine bells until the last minute." She paused, remembering M4's zombie state. "What happened to M4?"
"I burned his body with my flames. It was strange fighting him. His energy was completely different. I thought M5 had something to do with it, but I was wrong. M5 couldn't release that kind of power."
"I thought so. I guess that's another thing we have to worry about." Tsuki sighed, burying her face with her hands. "I should've been prepared. Watching you and Kurama getting attacked made me feel useless."
"Tsuki, don't beat yourself up," Hiei assured. "We all weren't prepared for that."
"But you had to rescue me!" Tsuki argued. "It's bad enough you had to carry me with your injured arm. And I just laid there while the robot captured you. Ergh, this dark tournament is driving me crazy!"
Hiei patted her head. "You're stronger than you realize, Tsuki. You'll survive this hellhole because you were built for it. The darkness may hurt you, but it'll never take your light away."
Heat flushed Tsuki's cheek. Her heart skipped a beat. "Thanks, Hiei." She smiled sweetly at him. "I know I called you a jerk earlier, but I appreciate you as an ally in this tournament."
Hiei remained silent. His eyes varied with curiosity and intensity.
Tsuki's body aching in response to his direct stare and nearness took her by surprise. She inched back, unsure what to say next.
Mitamura's groan interrupted her thoughts. Tsuki quickly came to his side. "Are you alright?"
"Who are you?" His olive green eyes studied hers. "Where's Dr. Ichigaki?"
"I'm Tsuki," the priestess pointed behind. "And this is Hiei. We're here to take you to your students."
"My students?" The master's tone was anxious. "What happened to them? Are they in danger?"
Before she could speak, Kurama came back with herbs in his hands.
"Great, he's awake." He went to the table where the doctor had his chemistry set. "I'll make the preparation right now."
While waiting for the antidote, Tsuki informed the master about Dr. Ichigaki's plan.
"En, Kai, Ryo," Mitamura's tears escaped his eyes. "I can't believe this is happening. They're good boys. They wouldn't have experimented if they knew about Dr. Ichigaki's plan. Their hearts are too pure for that."
Tsuki's heart sank. "Don't worry, we'll stop the doctor's plan," she vowed, squeezing his hand. I'll make sure Dr. Ichigaki never harms anyone again.
Kurama held Mitamura's back. "That should do it." The master sipped his green liquid. "You should be able to walk soon."
"Let's head to the stadium," Tsuki stated. She hoped Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Master Genkai weren't handicapped. They wouldn't have back down without a fight.
Kurama carried Mitamura on his back as they exited. The robot stood in front of the entrance.
"Kurama, you and Hiei can ride the robot. My guardian will carry Mitamura and me." Tsuki closed her eyes. "Inari, let's go."
The fox goddess' physical body formed. She licked Tsuki and wagged her two tails expeditiously.
"Such a beautiful fox," Kurama complimented, rubbing her back. "Hello, Inari."
Inari growled happily and nudged Hiei's side.
"Yes, yes. I remember you," Hiei said. "Hello, fox."
Tsuki climbed on her guardian's back. Kurama helped place the master behind her.
"Go, Inari," Tsuki instructed as the master touched her shoulders, securing himself.
While they proceeded to the stadium, Tsuki couldn't help but feel Hiei observing her closely. She stared at him for a few seconds before focusing her attention straight.
I'll worry about it later. Tsuki thought as his gaze still lingered on her face. We have a round to fight.
AN: For the Dr. Ichigaki's tournament fight, I couldn't find the demon team members name so I named them myself. I know the bull stated his name in the dub, but I couldn't get the correct spelling.
Also, my chapter update will be a little slower. I'm not on hiatus, just need to focus on my private life. Thanks for reading! :)
