"Easy now," Botan comforted Kuwabara as she and Tsuki escorted him to the arena.
Yusuke glowered at their injured friend. "Oh, look." He and the rest of the team stood in the ring. "Dufus is off his sickbed. Now that he's fully recovered, I'm sure he'll be a great help."
After placing Kuwabara down, Tsuki glanced at Team Mashōtsukai. All five opponents wore dark cloaks that enveloped them completely. The team was harnessed and ready for the next round.
"Kuwabara isn't the only one low on his power," Kurama responded.
Tsuki studied the masked fighter's appearance. She fought well, but her special attack drained her energy.
"So it's four against five." Yusuke shrugged. "That still isn't bad."
Kurama shook his head. "No, Yusuke. It's three against five."
Hiei remained quiet as Tsuki eyed him. She couldn't deny his swordsmanship and strength, but Hiei's energy needed time to regenerate.
Team Mashōtsukai's humongous member stepped forward. "Who wants to begin? The first match could be captain."
Gust of wind swirled in the stadium. A cloak drifted away, revealing a red hair and blue eye demon. He smiled brightly. "I'll go and take those humans then."
"Oh wow," Tsuki gasped. "His energy is remarkable."
Kuwabara placed his head on Botan's lap. "If that's the captain, then we're in deep trouble."
"You got that right," Botan confirmed.
"Jin, the wind master," Kurama pronounced. "Well, that explains who this team is."
Yusuke raised his eyebrow. "You know these jokers?"
"Indeed, most demons do. Team Mashōtsukai must be a surname for this tournament. Their actual names are Shinobi of the Spirit World."
"Shinobi? What the hell does that mean?"
"They're stealth fighters. Deadly mercenaries to the highest bid," Kurama explained. "A dispute rises in the Spirit World, and they solve it in secret. You're familiar with their other names, aren't you? The ninja."
"The ninja, the shinobi, who cares?" Yusuke glared at the captain. "I'm still kicking their asses."
The strong breeze brushed Tsuki's cheek as Jin and Yusuke arrived in the middle.
"Team captains, please decide the battle terms!" Koto commanded.
Jin spoke in a calm and unusual accent. "Let's fix these states simple enough. One-to-one-to-one, til I'm a tower on my feet holdin the five."
"Whatever he said," Yusuke stated.
"Jin is asking for a series of one-on-one matches!" Koto announced while the crowd erupted with applause. "With the advancing team taking five wins!"
"Die, Urameshi Team!"
"Yes! We'll eat your hearts today!"
Tsuki caught a glimpse of the darkening sky. "Here we go again." She sighed in exasperation.
The wind blew around the redhead captain as he towered over Yusuke. Within seconds, they began to size each other up.
"A damn near pleasant wind be fillin the air now," Jin spoke.
Yusuke blinked. "Huh?"
Jin's ears wiggled while he beamed. He proceeded to his teammate's side. "Tell a person by the wind, and yours is the kind I like, Urameshi."
"Ok..." Yusuke tilted his head. "That was interesting."
A loud beep blasted out of the speaker. "May I have your attention, please! The tournament committee will be instituting a medical examination before the next round!"
The committee is being very sneaky. Tsuki frowned. First the unexpected round, and now a medical examination. The odds were not in their favor.
Yusuke gritted his teeth, jumping from the ring. "What is this?! Gym class?!"
"According to section 13 index, due to the Urameshi Team fighting without rest, the team must report to the medical tent!"
Tsuki glanced to her right. The cunning committee already set up a tent for them.
Hiei gave out a searing snarl. "This is a waste of time. All we need to do is obliterate Team Mashōtsukai."
"Whatever," Yusuke huffed, rubbing his neck. "As long as they don't grab my balls and make me cough."
The tent curtains open, revealing a stunning nurse. She placed a hand on her hip, strolling seductively towards them.
"Uhhh," Yusuke's eyes glistened. He quickly flipped his hair back. "Scratched that."
Tsuki rolled her eyes. The redhead may be gorgeous, but her instinct screamed to stay alert.
"Hello, everyone," the nurse greeted in a luscious voice. "Please stand right in front of me so I can start the examination."
Tsuki stood between Yusuke and Kurama. Hiei and the masked fighter came last.
The nurse raised her hand, scanning from the right. She stopped between Hiei and the masked fighter. "Yes, you two fighters. Would you please follow me to the medical tent?"
"Don't be ridiculous." Hiei glared at her, swatting his hand in the air. "We need no attention. Go nurse the idiot lying on his back."
"But his wounds don't interest me in the way yours do, Hiei." The nurse advanced, batting her chocolate eyes. "Maybe I can help you."
Tsuki grimaced at the nurse's unprofessional behavior. Ignoring Kuwabara's injuries raised a red flag. And the masked fighter didn't even have a bruise on her.
The nurse whipped her long hair. "Follow me," she ordered, swaying to the tent. "I need to ask you a few questions."
Hiei and the masked fighter side-eyed each other. They nodded and reluctantly followed her.
The audience booed and jeered.
"Hurry up! I didn't come to see them recover!"
"What's the big deal?! They're going to die anyway!"
"I don't trust her, Kurama," Tsuki stated while the nurse probed their teammates. "The committee wants us to lose."
"I know, but at least we have three people. Trust me. We can still win this round," Kurama assured.
After reading her notes, the nurse's hands clasped together. "With all the considerations, it's clear you'll both have to stay with me until your health is improved."
Hiei's jaws tightened. "I don't go where people tell me to, lady." He and the masked fighter dismissed themselves. "You can treat yourself."
The nurse crossed her leg, "Oh, ho, ho, ho," she chimed, electric energy running through her body. "You guys aren't going anywhere."
Tsuki's eyes widened. A crackle of static surrounded the tent.
The masked fighter caught her breath and sprinted. "Hurry! It's a trap!"
"Ahhh!" Static shock abruptly halted Hiei and the masked fighter's quickness. Their faces tensed as their legs and arms jerked wildly.
"Damn it!" Yusuke scowled with his eyes blazing. He drove his shoulders into the unshakable barrier.
"What's happening to them?" Tsuki asked as the electric force pushed Hiei and the masked fighter back.
"It's a force field," Kurama informed. "The nurse is using her energy to create it."
"Well, isn't that convenient!" Yusuke pounded the barrier. "Hey, redhead! Why do I get the feeling that you're not a licensed nurse?!"
The nurse strutted out, revealing yellow electric cords that covered her sensitive parts. "Correct, Yusuke. Enchantress is more like it."
Yusuke dropped his arms, gawking at her attractive body. "Yeah...that was my second guess."
"Ruka is my name," the nurse boasted. "I'm regarded as the most talented creature alive in spell defense and incantations."
This isn't good. Tsuki watched helplessly as Hiei and the masked fighter struggled to move their bodies. They were like wild animals caged against their own free will.
"Spell defense? What is she talking about?" Kuwabara inquired.
"It's a different way to implement energy," Botan explained. "Ruka doesn't have any attack powers, but her defense is so top-notch that nothing can break through her force field."
Ruka winked while her spiritual energy spun. "I couldn't say it better myself."
"Give me my damn team back!" Yusuke demanded.
"Didn't you hear the announcement, Yusuke? They're both very sick and need a little time to recover." Ruka glanced at her captives. "Now, sit down. Sokujucho!"
Thread of electricity settled Hiei and the masked fighter in the chairs. No amount of strength and resistance could straighten them up.
"Why can't they break free?" Tsuki blinked against the sudden electric brightness. "They're stronger than her."
"Ruka's thread uses their spiritual energy against them." Kurama's lips tightened. "The more they struggle, the more powerful the thread becomes."
"As the result of the medical examination, Hiei and the masked fighter have been ruled unfit to fight!" The speaker announced. "They would sit out for the duration of the round while they're suitably treated!"
"Damn, this tournament." Tsuki approached Botan and Kuwabara, glaring at the upper-class section. "Forcing us here wasn't good enough. Now they want to torture us."
Botan frowned. "I thought at least they'll give us a fair round."
"The committee knows we're powerless. That's why they're so confident with their plans." Kuwabara winced as he clutched his side. "This round isn't going to be an easy win for us."
Yusuke turned crimson. He climbed the arena, standing face to face with Koto. "What the hell is this?!" He shouted. "How could you let them lie like that?!"
"I already told you! I don't have anything to do with these decisions!" Koto cried, waving her hands. "Really! I'm completely neutral!"
"Wrong stupid answer!" Yusuke fumed.
Kurama intervened, touching his shoulder. "It's alright."
"Says who?!"
"Obviously, the committee is against us. However, we aren't hurt. Truthfully the masked fighter and Hiei are in no shape to fight anyway. Think, Yusuke. Why would Ruka only count two of them when she had the chance to do more?" Kurama explained, eyeing Team Mashōtsukai. "Perhaps her power is not greater enough to restrict us all. She's more helpless than the committee thinks. The round is still ours."
Tsuki swallowed hard. Handicapped or not, they had to play smart. The evil committee favored Team Mashōtsukai.
She gave a worried glance at Hiei and the masked fighter. They stopped moving but glared daggers at Ruka.
"Hahahahahaha!" The humongous demon laughed and pointed. "Look! It's 3 against 5, Jin! You can destroy them all!"
Jin cleaned his ear and sighed. "Nah, I'm havin to change my mind if it's goin to be a fix like that." He walked away. "I don't give a damn. Somebody else go. I'm sure I rather be the watch now."
The demon blocked Jin's path, touching his shoulder. "It wouldn't be wise to think you can disrupt the set at this time."
Jin grabbed his hand. His eyes blazed murderously as he shoved him. "Grrr, don't you EVER put your gritty hands on me again!" He plopped down by the wall and closed his eyes.
Another teammate took off his cloak and leaped. "No matter." The alien demon stood in the middle, holding two paintbrushes. "The master of the disguise will fight this match."
Tsuki's hair rose from her back. This demon is creepy. And why would he bring brushes to fight in a deathmatch?
Yusuke balled his fists. "You're on."
Kurama stepped forward, preventing the spirit detective from walking. "You must leave this one to me, Yusuke. We're going to have to play this round very carefully. Let me fight them as long as I can and figure out their weaknesses. One of you guys will take over when I fall."
"Fine," Yusuke's face softened as he dropped down from the ring. "Be careful, Kurama."
Kurama nodded, meeting his contender in the middle.
"At least it'll give you plenty of time to rest, Yusuke," Tsuki consoled. "I'm sure you need it after fighting Dr. Ichigaki's round."
"Hell yeah, but the stupid committee got me energized again," Yusuke growled, palming his fist. "Wait until I get my hands on them."
Kuwabara eyed Kurama's opponent and inhaled a sharp breath. "I'm getting a disturbing feeling about this guy. Kurama needs to watch out."
"You may be right, but he can handle himself," Botan reassured. "Kurama and Hiei are the strongest in our team."
Fear crept Tsuki's spine. "True, but I have a feeling Gama is hiding something deadly." She kneeled next to Botan, observing Kuwabara's body. "Kuwabara, tell me. Where does it hurt the most?"
"My chest and head are nothing compared to what I feel in my ribs." Kuwabara let out a groan, touching his stomach. "It hurts when I breathe."
"Ok, I'll start with that first." Tsuki massaged his tender side and grimaced. Half of Kuwabara's ribs were fractured. With the round happening now, it was going to take a while to heal.
"Team Urameshi Kurama vs. Team Mashōtsukai Gama! You may begin!" Koto commanded.
Gama sneered. "Tell me, demon traitor. What does the word makeup bring to mind? Human females no doubt. A little gloss to attract the next mate." His voice rose viciously. "Disgusting, isn't it? The way humans manage to bastardize everything they touch."
Kurama stood silent as Gama painted his eyelids red and lips blue.
"Over centuries, the human influence has infected the Spirit World. Now only a few demons know its original power." Gama resembled a tribal warrior, creating markings around his arms and chest. "Allow me to show you."
"That's strange." Tsuki squinted her eyes while Gama placed the brushes back on his belt. "He's not attacking with his weapon."
"Now, I haven't seen that one before!" Koto sheltered her face. "Gama covered his body in some sort of face paint! And now his spiritual energy is going insane!"
Gama's aura glowed red. He lunged and threw a punch, smashing into the ring as Kurama leaped away.
"Gama's decorations seemed to boost his power!" Koto declared. "Kurama can't even squeeze in a counterattack!"
"Wow, he's fast," Kuwabara commented.
"And strong," Tsuki added.
"Gama uses his paintbrushes for some sort of magic," Botan explained. "It's possible he knows other spells as well."
Kurama remained in defense mode, dodging all of Gama's multiple punches and kicks.
"Kurama, you're playing a dangerous game" Hiei spoke cautiously. "You could at least draw your whip."
"From what I've seen," the masked fighter stated. "Kurama is very good at thinking two steps ahead while rapidly formulating a plan. Maybe he's buying himself time to make a critical hit."
Tsuki's eyebrows furrowed at Kurama's hesitation. Investigating without protection wasn't good. Gama wanted his head.
"I know all about your plan concoction, Kurama!" Gama stated after he punched the ring. "I don't plan to give you time to make them!"
Kurama flipped from Gama's strike. However, his last step took him off balance.
"Let me demonstrate for you!" Using his brush, Gama swiftly painted an infinite symbol on Kurama's leg.
"Oh no," Tsuki muttered, visibly flustered. The paint glowed darkly with Gama's demonic power.
Kurama took one step and kneeled. "If you don't mind me asking. What did you do to me?"
"Hahahaha, your leg feels like a giant block of lead. Doesn't it?" Gama smiled evilly. "You're marked by the makeup of death."
"The makeup of death?" Tsuki fought a rising panic. "Is Gama using dark magic, Botan?"
"I believe so," Botan claimed. "Which means it's taking effect on Kurama's spiritual energy."
"Let me get this straight," Yusuke began. "You can't move any part of your body that gets marked up by that paint?"
Kurama managed to get up. "Apparently," he stated, limping slowly. His movements tensed and stiff.
Gama crept closer, pulling out his brushes. "Hehehehehe, why try to fight the inevitable? The makeup of death has already marked you, Kurama. There's no escape!"
"Aw jeez," Kuwabara groaned. "How's he gonna win with that handicap?"
"Is there anything he can do to stop it himself?" Tsuki asked.
Botan shook her head. "Dark magic is linked to the wielder. Kurama has no choice but to finish Gama."
"Gama's makeup seems to take on a reverse effect when painted on its enemy!" Koto announced. "And with Kurama barely able to walk, Gama is slowly moving in like a tiger stalking its wounded prey!"
The crowd joyously shouted and rumbled.
"Rip him apart!"
"You're done for, traitor!"
"Makeup of chains!" Gama lunged, painting infinite marks all over Kurama's arms and legs. "Yes! The costume is complete! Go ahead and try to limp away now!"
Tsuki stiffened as Kurama remained still. "This is really bad."
"Kurama, get rid of the outfit!" Yusuke advised.
"HA! Don't be naive!" Gama pranced and howled. "HAHAHAHA! Even if he had the strength, it wouldn't change a thing! Nearly 2000 pounds of weight is chained directly in his skin!"
Only Kurama's troubled gaze followed Gama's erratic movements.
"Yes, that's better!" Gama grinned wickedly. "You're finally accepting your faith!"
"Kurama," Tsuki pleaded. "Think of something fast."
"Kurama's arms and legs are completely useless! He can't do nothing but stand and wait for his bloody demise!" Koto declared.
"This is bullcrap!" Yusuke kicked the side of the ring. "Kurama, don't leave us alone with these guys!"
Kuwabara's head snapped up. "If he dies, we're done for."
"Yes," Botan agreed. "If Kurama loses, the chances of us winning are going to be tougher."
Gama lunged with his claws out. "And now you die, demon traitor!"
"Rose whip!" While whipping his long hair, Kurama's weapon gruesomely slashed Gama's body multiple times.
Relief crossed Tsuki's face as Gama stood frozen. "Amazing."
"Yeah, that was a pretty neat trick," Kuwabara admitted.
The audience kept silent as Gama kneeled to the floor.
"An unbelievable 180 people!" Koto proclaimed. "Kurama has somehow taken control of this fight!"
"Way to go, Kurama!" Yusuke gave a whoop. "One down!"
"But…," Gama remained paralyzed while his blood poured in the ring. "The makeup...of chains..."
Kurama's whip slithered in his hair. His gleaming eyes fixed on Gama's face. "Only an amateur depends on arms and legs for victory."
Jin opened his eyes and smiled. Two of his teammates marched closer to the ring.
"Damn you! Don't take...the credit for...this!" Gama jolted up, curling his lips. "I killed myself... today because of the...mistake of not sealing...your energy as well!"
A flicker of annoyance crossed Kurama's face. "Don't waste your breath in conversation, Gama. You can easily heal your energy. Release me, and I'll let you walk away with your life."
"Convincing...aren't you." Gama breathed heavily. "But the battle...isn't over yet."
Tsuki tilted her head. How could he possibly do no more damage?
"Even with my arms and legs bound, you're in no shape to fight me. Don't die pointlessly, Gama," Kurama urged. "You're too intelligent for that."
Gama laughed and threw a punch. "I...appreciate...your confidence."
"What are you doing, Kurama?" Hiei demanded as Kurama dodge Gama's attack. "Kill him. Secure the victory."
"He's being courteous," the masked fighter explained. "He knows Gama can't harm him physically."
Kurama evaded to the side from another weak effort. "You'll bleed to death if you keep trying to fight. Please, be wise."
"Spare me…your morals...demon...traitor!" Gama's fearful blows fell short as Kurama suppressed his aggressive instincts.
"Wow," Kuwabara's eyes transfixed with horror as the demon continued to throw harmless punches. "This is disturbing. It looks like I'm watching a gory film."
Tsuki cringed when Gama's hand fell off. His blood spurted Kurama's clothes until he finally collapsed.
"That was the most beautiful performance that I had ever seen!" Koto pirouetted and spun. "Let's start the count! 1, 2, 3, 4, 5!"
Kurama swung his head back and forth. "You were correct after all. It's your fault that you died in vain." His downcast eyes peered at Gama's misfortune. "I can't pity you."
Gama's eyes popped open. His long finger pointed at Kurama. "The...death...is...yours."
Tsuki heaved. His deadly tone sank her heart.
"What?" Kurama questioned.
"6, 7, 8, 9, 10! Urameshi Team takes the first point!" Koto declared.
A vile grin crept across Gama's face. "You never asked me...what gave my makeup...it's power. What made it different from the makeup…of those other human fools. The difference...is the main ingredient...Kurama. It's made of...my...blood." His dark laughter crawled Tsuki's skin. "Hahahaha! I have given you...the makeup...of the seal! Hahahaha!"
Botan and Kuwabara caught their breath simultaneously.
Tsuki gulped while Gama's gore formed Fū Ju on Kurama's chests.
Yusuke scowled. "I'm definitely not liking the sound of this."
"It's what I should've done...from the start. I sealed...your spirit energy. Your entire power is trapped...inside your body." Pools of Gama's blood spread in the ring. "Even as I fade...the effect will live on. I secured victory... for my team. And so...I die knowing...my match...wasn't in...vain..."
Tsuki cringed when Gama's tongue flickered horribly. He coiled, dying away into stillness.
"Wow, what a phenomenal death!" Koto twirled. "While the crew members remove Gama's body, will the next fighters please approach the ring!"
Light snow began to fall. Team Mashōtsukai's smallest member took off their cloak, revealing a blue hair ninja.
Tsuki's eyebrows shot up. "His energy is outstanding. We're dealing with an efficient set of opponents."
"Yusuke," Hiei called out. "Get him out of there. Kurama is going to have a difficult time with him."
"Yeah, you're right." Yusuke slapped his hands in the ring. "Kurama, get out! I can take it from here!"
"I can't." Kurama stood tall. "Gama's chain spell is still working."
Tsuki shuddered when the young demon stepped in. His icy blue eyes stared fiercely at Kurama.
"Man, that's cold!" Yusuke rubbed his arms. "Who is that guy, Hiei?"
"It's Toya." Hiei's jaws tightened. "The master of ice."
"This is awful," Botan remarked.
Tsuki's shoulders slump. "Kurama can't even defend himself. How's he going to fight a master?"
"Ergh!" Yusuke ruffled his head. "Kurama, try to move now!"
"I have to fight this round," Kurama retorted. "I already made a promise to this team."
"No, Kurama," Kuwabara pleaded. "We can't both be sacrificial today."
"Kurama still has time," the masked fighter informed. "The first curse should wear off soon. And he'll be able to move. If Kurama can stall Toya long enough, he can regain his energy too."
"That's nice, but I'd rather stay realistic." Hiei folded his arms, sitting on the table. "Toya isn't going to wait on that. The stubborn fox is in deep trouble."
Tsuki bit her lip. Her hopeful gaze focused on the ring. She needed to remain positive, but Kurama was defenseless without his powers.
"You fought bravely, Gama." The blue-haired ninja saluted his teammate while the crew carried his body out of the arena. "I assure you. Your death will be honored. Kurama will pay."
"Alright, people! Time's up!" Koto announced. "By the rules, I must consider those now in the ring as the next opponents! That means it's Kurama vs. Toya!"
"Darn it!" Kuwabara became restless as he tossed and turned. "If I was stronger, I could help out! I messed up my team, and now he's going to die!" He moaned, making an ear-splitting bone crack.
Tsuki's head traveled in a downward spiral. "Relax, Kuwabara! You have to hold still!" She took a deep breath and pressed harder on his ribs. "We all have to remain calm."
Botan stroked his hair. "Yes, if Kurama wants to fight, we need to rely on him."
"Prepare yourself. I'll make this quick." Toya relaxed his stance, steadying his gaze.
"Please, answer me one thing first," Kurama stated. "Why expose yourselves now? The shinobi have always dealt with their affairs in secret."
"For light."
"Explain."
Toya sighed. "It's simple. Even the strongest tree will die if left in the dark. For centuries we shinobis have done our jobs well. But in recent years, we've caught glimpses of the Human World and asked why not us? Have we not earned the privilege that humans take for granted?"
"Take for granted?" Tsuki's face twisted. "I'm already not liking his philosophy."
"Typical demon," Kuwabara remarked. "Always stereotyping humans."
"We're entering a new era." Toya expressed. "And we'll begin with the land of our own. It's already been arranged that if we win this tournament, Hanging Neck island will be our prize. We'll cover the Human World with our light."
Tsuki's stomach dropped. No wonder Gama sacrificed himself. Team Mashōtsukai already signed a contract with the devil.
"Huh," Hiei began in a mockery tone. "The ninjas are revolting."
The masked fighter shook her head. Disappointment in her voice became clear. "The shinobi have survived for centuries by each master passing their knowledge to one apprentice before he dies. The previous master must have made poor selections. These fighters don't know their place."
Hiei shrugged. "I don't give a damn about their internal disputes. The important thing is how strong they are." His eyes fixed on the ice demon. "But if there's any true master that knows the art of ice, it's Toya."
A deep frown warped Tsuki's features. If Team Mashōtsuka won by mingling with the corruption and greed of the committee, the Human World could be in danger.
"Let's seize the conversation," Toya effused. "I know you're simply trying to buy time for that seal to wear off."
Kurama broke out a smile. "I admit. You caught me."
"You boys are having way too much fun!" Koto gave the signal. "Begin!"
"Gama made the mistake of giving you too much time to think. You won't be so lucky with me. Frozen hell!" Frost spread around the ring as Toya's energy increased. "Kurama, you'll die quickly!"
Tsuki shivered like she stepped into a cold night. Toya generated a glacial wall that reached the high sky.
"Cold! Cold! Cold!" Koto's legs trembled. "I wish I wore my tights today! Toya's power is transforming a wave of freezing air!"
"Your own climate control. That's very impressive," Kurama complimented.
"In addition to improving my attacks, it'll serve as a barrier, giving you a few options for an escape." Toya's hands glowed green. " I admit. I'm somewhat hesitant to get near you. Even with your energy sealed. Your little rose whip maneuver is quite intimidating. I would rather kill you long distance."
"This is bad," Tsuki spoke. "Toya is a powerful and cautious fighter."
Yusuke paced back and forth. "Damn, if only I had the chance to pulverize the ice prick."
Toya blew out a breath. "Shards of winter!"
Kurama gasped, eyes bulging. He bolted back as the ice bullets blasted his way.
"Seems Kurama can finally move his arms and legs again! But it may not be in time to dodge this assault!" Koto announced.
Shards sliced Kurama's skin. He winced and launched himself sideways in a desperate sprint of cover.
Toya smiled, trailing him across the ring. "Nice try."
Tsuki's heart accelerated. "Kurama needs his spiritual power. It's impossible to beat Toya with wits and luck."
"Yeah," Botan agreed slowly. "And we don't know how long Kurama can stall him."
"You better think of something quickly, Kurama." Toya blew his ice bullets. "You can't dodge these forever."
Kurama flipped and ran. The icy floor couldn't stop him from swerving most of Toya's attacks.
"Nice moves, Kurama." Kuwabara beamed. "He may have a chance after all."
"Surrender!" Toya's blast of ice flew.
"Despite awesome acrobatics, Kurama can't avoid all of these razor-sharp blades of ice!" Koto announced.
Panic seized Tsuki's brain. The multiple shards knocked Kurama back, slumping him to the ground.
"And Kurama hits the deck!" Koto declared as the crowd grew wilder.
"Kill the traitor!"
"What are you waiting for, Touya?! Ripped out his spine!"
Tsuki scowled. "This is so frustrating. Gama's creepy magic needs to wear off."
"This isn't right." Kuwabara wiped the sweat from his forehead. "I should be the one fighting out there!"
"This might be Kurama's time to lose." Botan touched her heart. "He already gave our team a point."
Yusuke growled. "Just stay down! We'll take it from here!"
Kurama stood up, heaving. His eyes filled with determination.
"That hit was not enough to beat you." Toya gave a condescending smirk. "I know that you stayed down intentionally to buy yourself time. I don't suggest you try it again."
Tsuki furrowed her eyebrows at Kurama's sudden movements. He wiped his chest with his blood, smearing Gama's markings away.
Toya chuckled at his effort. "Now, now. Don't underestimate Gama's abilities. It takes much more than smearing to get rid of that seal."
Kurama held his rose. "Rose whi-ugh!" He cried, kneeling as his body shook uncontrollably.
"I see," Toya noticed. "You realized your energy is hiding inside of your blood. Only one problem. To release enough to beat me, you had to bleed yourself dry."
"Kurama met his match," Tsuki informed. "Toya is a good observer."
"I can see Kurama is frustrated about it," Kuwabara stated. "If he had his energy, he wouldn't be in this predicament."
Toya's hands glowed. "Gama's seal won't wear off anytime soon. Admit it, Kurama. I'm holding the end of your life in my hands." He launched his compelling hail.
"Kurama!" Tsuki cringed as icy shards impaled him.
"Augh!" Kurama plunged into the ring with a gasp of pain. Blood leaked from his body as he struggled to get up.
"I sure know that facial expression! Pure lovely and excruciating agony!" Koto announced. "And yet, Kurama is back on his feet! He's determined to take some more!"
"This doesn't make sense. No one can survive all of those direct hits from my ice attack. Not unless." Sudden realization appeared on Toya's face. "You really are dangerous, aren't you? I haven't been making direct hits. You've been blocking your vital points with your own body. You must be very old. Experienced. Perhaps as I am."
"We're more alike than you know." Kurama made strong eye contact. "Now, tell me. This new life on the outside. What are you truly planning to do with it?"
Tsuki listened attentively with her mind already made up. His answer wasn't going to justify their sinister plan.
Toya created an ice-crafted sword around his right hand. "The Human World will know just as soon as we get there." He wielded his weapon in the air. "I can't allow this to continue. It's time to die, Kurama."
"Wow! Get ready, people!" Koto declared. "It's the barbaric finish we've been waiting for!"
"Damn, that fox." Hiei arose and checked his arm.
"Kurama still has a chance," the masked fighter claimed. "I'm sure he's thinking of something."
Tsuki's body tensed while Toya charged, swinging his sword wildly. He didn't give Kurama time to retaliate.
"Kurama!" Yusuke screamed when the fox demon leaped backward.
"Ooooo! That head just nearly flew off!" Koto declared as Toya sliced some strands of Kurama's hair.
Tsuki watched in horror as Kurama ducked and flipped. The slightest mistake and he could be fatally wounded.
"Lucky moves, my friend," Toya smirked, continuing his aggression. "Let's see how long you can keep that up."
Kurama had fallen into an exhausted state. He skirted back, huffing.
Yusuke stomped his foot. "Kurama! Tell the fox girl you'll give up! I swear we'll take it from here!"
"Urameshi knows that two people will have a hard time fighting four guys in a row. If Kurama loses, we're dead meat," Kuwabara explained.
Botan covered her watery eyes. "Just tell me when it's over."
Kurama deflected Toya's first few blows, but the last strike sliced his arm.
"Ah!" Kurama cried as he toppled to the ground.
"Kurama!" Tsuki's tone turned desperate. "Please, stay down!"
"What the hell is wrong with you, Kurama?! Are you trying to get yourself killed?!" Yusuke fumed. "Don't get up! Let me take him!"
Kurama held his arm and smiled at his team. "Let me do what I must, guys. I intend on winning this round."
"Strange," Hiei lifted his chin. "It's like Kurama is taking this fight personally."
Yusuke relaxed his shoulders and smiled. "Fine, go ahead and win."
"If you're determined to fight," Tsuki stated, eyes glistening. "Then we believe in you, Kurama,"
The crowd screamed in excitement.
"Die! You human lover!"
"Toya, slice him to pieces!"
Tsuki's keen eye focused on Kurama's arms. Something subtle was happening inside. Wait, I've seen these energy roots before. Kurama, are you mad?!
"I'm going to end your life with one blow. Prepare yourself." Toya raised his sword and smiled. "I like you, Kurama. It was great getting to know you. Let's not have this slain ruined our friendship."
Kurama returned the smile. "My thoughts exactly." He broke into a sprint.
Toya hurtled, eyes burning with bloodlust. "Now, you shouldn't have run. I can't guarantee a painless kill that way."
But would it work? Tsuki asked herself. Will it grow ready in time? Oh God, she prayed her friend didn't meet the same fate as Roto.
Toya lunged. "Kurama, farewell!" He drew back his sword for the mightiest strike he could give.
Kurama stepped forward and to the outside. His plants pierced Toya's chest and held his sword, blocking the fatal blow.
"Is it over yet?" Botan peeked at the ring.
A sob of relief escaped Tsuki's lips. "Yes, and Kurama won."
Blood oozed from Toya's stomach. "How could you manipulate your death plant? Your energy is lock inside of you." His eyes widened as he glanced at Kurama's arms. "Insane. You actually embedded the death plant seed inside your body."
"It was my only option." Kurama panted hard. Sweat covered his face. "By inserting the seed into my open wound, the plant could enter my bloodstream and take root in my imprisoned energy."
Toya's glacial wall vanished as he dropped to his knees. "Phenomenal, you really are something," he stated, crumbling to the floor.
"What an unbelievable turnaround!" Koto skipped. "I'll take a ten count! 1, 2, 3, 4, 5!"
Yusuke thrust his fists in the air. "Yes! Now it's my turn!"
"He did it." Kuwabara's body relaxed as he beamed. "What a smart guy."
Tsuki's face suffused with joy. "He is. Crazy move, but brave."
The crowd was in an uproar.
"Get your ass off the floor, Toya!"
"This is ridiculous! I thought you guys were real shinobi!"
"6, 7, 8, 9!"
Please, don't get up. Tsuki crossed her fingers while Toya lifted his head. After his shaky arms gave in, he finally collapsed.
"10! Kurama wins! Please update the scoreboard!" Koto announced. The large screen displayed two circles on the Team Urameshi's side.
"I admit, Kurama." Toya rose to his feet, clutching his arm. "You have won the match. Now kill me."
"I will not," Kurama glanced at Toya's shocked face. "You never answered. What do you plan to do with this island if you get it?"
"Who cares?!" Toya let out a harsh breath. "It doesn't matter!"
"Interesting," Kurama pressed his lips together. "I also have spent years in the shadows. I only wanted to know if this plan could make your life better, nobler than mine has been."
"Oh, Kurama," Tsuki whispered, crushed that the fox demon's past still haunted him.
"Nobler than Kurama?" Kuwabara pondered.
"What does he mean?" Botan inquired.
Kurama's arm dropped, eyes closing "That's why….I wanted to fight…. to the fullest…. so I can prove...myself of my….existence." He murmured as his head dropped.
"Kurama!" Yusuke wailed.
"Please be alright." Tsuki had butterflies in her stomach as Koto put her ears next to Kurama's chest.
The crowd waited in anticipation.
"About time you killed one!"
"I wanted the traitor's head sliced off, but at least he's dead!"
"Wait, people!" Koto announced to the rowdy crowd. "Kurama still has a faint heartbeat! It appears he slipped into unconsciousness while still on his feet!"
"Well, that's a relief," Botan expressed.
"Definitely," Tsuki agreed.
Koto flipped her hair while the audience heckled. "Now, people. I know you want agonizing death, but we need to get ready for the next match! Will the next fighters proceed to the arena!"
Toya dropped down, lying next to a grinning Jin.
"Alright, we're getting somewhere!" Yusuke began to climb into the ring. "Now it's my turn!"
Team Masho's giant teammate took off his cloak, revealing a dark-skinned demon with numerous scars on his body. He glowered at the Urameshi Team. "Not so fast," He stated, emerging towards Kurama.
"What are you doing?" Yusuke demanded with his eyes blazing.
Tsuki abruptly stood up. Pure evil lingered on the demon.
The giant looked at Kurama up and down. "You forgot something. He's standing in the ring." He leaned closer with a mischievous grin. "Yes, it looks to me like he's volunteering to fight."
Yusuke balled his fist. "Oh, give me a break! Kurama isn't even conscious anymore! I'm taking this fight!"
Koto glanced back and forth. "Um, alright! With the team captain's decision, it's Yusuke vs. Bakken!"
Before Yusuke could get in, the speaker buzzed loudly. "Correction! The next fight will be Kurama vs. Bakken!"
"What?!" Botan, Kuwabara, and Yusuke yelled.
"A fighter standing in the ring can't be removed against his will! As will can't be determined here, the fighter remains!" The speaker announced.
"This is madness!" Tsuki ranted. The committee was making too many unfair and strict decisions against their team.
"To hell with the committee." Hiei advanced to the force field. "It's my turn to fight."
"Uh, uh, uh," Ruka stood in front of him, wiggling her finger like he was a naughty child. "Don't think about it, Hiei. Unless you want to try another encounter with my energy thread."
Tsuki glared at the witch. The temptation to shoot her and the committee bubbled inside of her. They all had no shame.
"Hey! Let g-AAAIEEEE!" Koto shrilled as Bakken lifted her by the shirt.
The jerk threw her out of the ring. "Look like you're not needed anymore, foxy!"
Tsuki's mouth gaped as Bakken grabbed Kurama's collar. No, please tell me this is a sick joke.
Bakken punches thudded Kurama's face with numbing force. "Now the ref is out of the picture. We can really have some fun!" He tossed the fox demon like a piece of trash.
"What a punk!" Kuwabara professed when Kurama thumped heavily on the ring. "He's hitting someone who's completely defenseless! A real man will never do that!"
Botan gave Bakken a dirty look. "He's clearly not the honor code type."
Tsuki's heart bounced in her ribcage. She came closer. "No, stop."
Bakken loomed over the unresponsive Kurama. His tone became bloodthirsty. "Hahahaha! You look so peaceful with your little flowers!" He kicked his ribs.
Kurama flopped over, facing away from his team.
"Stop!" Tsuki stated firmly. "You're going to kill him!"
"Damn it!" Yusuke barked. "Fox girl, start the count!"
Koto stood up, brushing her shoulder. "Kurama is certainly down, Bakken! Step away so I can start the count!"
"You again?!" Bakken stared icily at her. "Didn't I tell you to back off?!"
Koto flinched. "I-I'm j-just going to do my job, okay?!" She proceeded with the count. "1, 2, 3, 4, 5!"
Bakken smirked, licking his lips. "You must think I'm stupid. Nobody humiliates my team and gets to slip away from a 10 count!"
"6, 7, 8, 9, 1-!" The last count was on the tip of her tongue as Bakken held Kurama up.
"Say 10!" Yusuke urged.
"Oh, look! He's on his feet again! I guess that means he wants more!" Bakken dove his fist deep into Kurama's gut. "I'll make sure he can't move by the time he's out of the ring!"
"STOP IT!" Whistles and claps rang Tsuki's ears while angry tears spilled down her face.
"You bastard!" Yusuke's muscles tensed. "Don't you dare touch him again!"
Bakken cluttered Kurama, landing every punch. "Not much of a challenge for me. I like that." He nodded in satisfaction like he'd achieve a big victory.
Tsuki shook like a leaf as Bakken tossed Kurama on the floor. Blood dribbled off her friend's swollen face.
Koto's face twisted with a grimace. She stood in front of Bakken with her hands up. "Stop! You disgusting horse! I'm all for extreme pain and torture, but this guy is not even awake to enjoy it! I'm taking a ten count!"
"Count yourself out then!" Bakken smacked her face. "We're making the rules now! Not you!"
What kind of sick coward hurts two defenseless people?! Tsuki's bracelet transformed as Koto flew out of the ring.
"Bakken is a low-life punk," Kuwabara commented. "He actually hit a female."
"He's not the gentleman type either," Botan added.
Tsuki heard the slight rasp of material ripping as Bakken pulled Kurama to his feet.
"This game was fun, but it's time to end this." Bakken began to launch his overhand punch. "I'll start by breaking your face!"
"That piece of trash!" Yusuke pointed his index finger at Bakken's back.
Tsuki aimed for his head. Their desperate pleas went in one ear and out the other. Now it's time to act.
Team Mashōtsukai's last hidden teammate immediately stepped forward. "Bakken, stop." His command halted the giant's assault.
"But why, Risho?!" Bakken demanded. "I can kill him right now!"
"Take him outside of the ring," Risho ordered. "You have won the fight."
"But he killed Gama and injured Toya!" Bakken protested. "It's best to exchange a life for our lost!"
"Yes, and if you had landed that punch, you would've died as well."
"What?" Bakken turned around, gasping as Tsuki and Yusuke had their attacks ready.
"Or do you think you would have survived two major attacks from the back?" Risho continued. "It's clear that the Urameshi Team cares more about that demon's life than this tournament. They're ready to fight every apparition in this stadium if they must. We need to win. Not be involved in a revolt."
"Huh, you're getting soft, Risho." Bakken's irritation flared. "You'll end up like Gama and Toya if you keep this up. We shouldn't be making concessions for this lousy team."
"Try me." Yusuke's spiritual energy glowed. "I dare you, punk."
Tsuki remained silent, gripping her divine bells tightly.
Bakken sneered while he sweated. He tossed Kurama out of the ring. "Fine, take your precious buddy."
Tsuki and Yusuke rushed to Kurama's aid as he sprawled on the floor.
The priestess touched Kurama's chest. "He's breathing but wounded severely," she explained, unable to take her eyes off his broken and battered features.
Yusuke and Tsuki glared daggers at Ruka when she giggled.
"Your friend got a lucky reprieve," Ruka mentioned. "One more hit and he would've died."
Hiei's eyes darkened. "So did you, witch." His teeth bared while he balled his fist. "And everyone else in this stadium."
The masked fighter nodded. "They weren't the only ones about to fight. So was Hiei. And their combined powers wouldn't be contained in the ring."
"That's very funny," Ruka struck a sexy pose. "Have you forgotten you're trapped inside my sturdy force field?"
"Drop the act, Ruka." The masked fighter narrowed her eyes. "You already realize you can't keep us here for much longer. Our powers are returning. And yours will stay as mediocre as always."
Tsuki beamed from the good news. At least the witch healed their teammates.
Yusuke cradled Kurama in his arms. "Don't worry, Kurama. You're going to be alright." His face softened into a smile as he carried the fox demon to the stadium's wall.
Koto climbed the arena. "Well, I think we can all agree Kurama will be staying outside the ring!" She glowered at the screen. "Just change the blasted board already!"
A circle appeared on Team Mashōtsukai's side. The audience jeered and hissed.
"Why Bakken?! You had the perfect chance to kill him!"
"We want their heads sliced off now!"
"Don't worry, the punk just got lucky," Bakken boasted. "I'm sure my next opponent will be as good as dead."
Tsuki's fury boiled beneath her skin. She stared fiercely at Bakken.
Bakken dramatically jittered. "Ooo, what a scary look. Am I supposed to be shivering my bootstraps now? Or should I be running for my life?"
Tsuki bounced in the ring. Her eyes never left his ugly face. "You should be doing both, coward."
"Wait, Tsuki!" Yusuke hollered. "Let me take him!"
Tsuki strolled to the middle. "I got him, Yusuke. He may be big, but his energy is the lowest of the low."
"You got this, Tsuki!" Botan cheered.
"Yeah!" Kuwabara yelled. "He ain't nobody!"
Bakken laughed, puffing out his chest. "Really, tiny? You think you can hurt me?"
"I'm not going to hurt you." Tsuki's white aura glowed brightly. The bitterness laced her every word. "I'm going to purify you. Your disgusting presence is a waste of space."
Bakken leered. His veins formed between his arms and neck. "Why, you little brat."
The crowd erupted with applause.
"Easy win! The priestess will be the first sacrifice!"
"Yes! Her body will be a great feast for tonight!"
"Tsuki!" Keiko called out. "Don't let these stinky demons get to you! Kick his butt!"
"Get him, girl!" Shizuru shouted. "Show him what you got!"
Tsuki wanted to smile but remained expressionless. Despite the demon's hateful words, her friends' sincere voices made her calm.
"And the third match, Bakken vs. Tsuki!" Koto performed the signal. "You may begin!"
Tension showed in Bakken's shoulder muscles. He faced Tsuki head on. "I'm sure one punch will knock you out cold!"
Tsuki stood ready in her fighting stance. When he came close, her aura grew fast, expanding high towards Bakken's body.
"AAAAHHHHH!" Bakken toppled backward, covering his sizzling face. "AAAAHHHHHHH!"
Tsuki's face relaxed as her lips curled into a fond smile. His pure agony soothed her soul.
"Amazing! I love cries of excruciating pain!" Koto beamed to the silent audience. "By using her spiritual energy, Tsuki burned Bakken's skin! His face looks like been plunged into a 700F deep fryer!"
"Woo hoo!" Yusuke praised. "Nice one, Tsuki!"
"AAAAHHHHH!" Bakken rolled back and forth, scalding. Large blisters formed on his face and neck. "AAAHHHHHH!"
"Get up, demon." Tsuki's voice turned cold. "We're not done yet."
Bakken trembled, as he snarled. He stood up with his burns still steaming. "You're going to regret that!" He roared, flexing. "Mystical power of shinobi, white mist!"
Tsuki almost gagged. What a strange power. As the sweat poured out of him, the musty smell reached up and stuffed her nose.
The mist rose and spread around the arena. Bakken, Koto, and the watchers began to disappear in a white-milk haze.
"Pure insanity!" Koto announced. "The ring is being devoured by a giant layer of mist!"
Where did that coward go? Tsuki gazed around, careful not to make sudden movements. His energy was close, but the foul smell and mist confused her.
"Tsuki has absolutely no idea where Bakken's first attack will come from!" Koto declared. "In fact, neither do I! I can't even see my microphone in front of me!"
"Don't let this mist fool ya!" Yusuke exclaimed. "His scary ass is just hiding!"
I can't stay here. Tsuki listened hard, shifting around the ring. And I can't be defenseless either.
"Sacred shield!" She chanted. Pure light surrounded her left hand, transforming into a light and sturdy shield.
The wind pierced Tsuki's ears as it swept over the arena. She held the shield close to her chest.
A vast whirlwind spiraled with an exceptional velocity towards Tsuki. With inches to spare, she stepped out of range.
Tsuki heard a patter of feet behind her and turned.
Bakken's leg lifted high, directing at her upper body. "Take this!"
Tsuki's shield quickly blocked the direct kick, but his force flew her back. She reeled hard on the ring.
"Hahaha! How was that tiny?" Bakken taunted. "You definitely didn't see that coming!"
Tsuki rose, ignoring the stinging sensations on her stomach and arm. "Believe me, Bakken. I felt more pain than this. Your special attack says a lot about your wimpy character."
"Whatever!" He jumped, vanishing under the mantle of thick mist. "See if you can take another hit!"
Tsuki rolled her eyes. If he thinks I'm falling for this stupid trick again, he's got another thing coming. This time, Tsuki held her shield high and stayed still.
The whirlwind wreathed to her right. Tsuki dodged it and glanced up.
Bakken soared downwards, clenching his fist. "Take this!"
It's time to get rid of this damn mist. Tsuki fired her cannon beam at the stadium's wall.
"Ha!" Bakken chuckled in delight. "You completely shot it in the wro-!" A powerful breeze swept over him. He flew and tumbled in the ring.
Tsuki squinted her nose as the mist disappeared. The audience groaned from the dank odor.
"Ugh! This stinks!"
"What a lousy power!"
"A brilliant strategy by Tsuki!" Koto declared. "She used the force of her spirit beam to blow the mist right out of the stadium!"
"Damn, that pipsqueak. She completely destroyed my mist." Bakken got up, rubbing his head. "Where did she go?"
"Behind you, coward." Tsuki's divine bells glowed as he swung around. "I'm done toying with you. It's time to end this."
Bakken jerked and landed on his knees. "No, please!" He begged, voice twitching. "Don't hurt me! I swear I didn't mean to hurt your friend!"
"Spare me your distasteful lie! I watched you torment my teammate!" Tsuki's cold gaze fixed on his frightened face. "Kurama didn't kill Gama. Gama sacrificed himself. He spared Toya, even when he told Kurama to kill him. But you don't care about morals because on the inside, Bakken. You're just a scaredy-cat."
"Fine, tiny!" Bakken snapped. He grabbed a large rock and tossed it. "I hope this stone squash you like a bug!"
Tsuki's eyebrow twitched while her barrier blocked the rock inches from her face. She extended her divine bells. "Holy light!"
Bakken reeled away with a screech as projectiles of light launched everywhere in his body. Seconds later, he crashed into the stadium's wall.
"And Bakken is out of the ring! Let's take a ten count!" Koto declared to the silent crowd. "1, 2, 3, 4, 5!"
"Wow!" Jin's face brightened. His ears wiggled as he lifted himself. "That's a pretty good fight!"
Tsuki walked away once Bakken didn't move from his spot. Alive or dead, it didn't matter to her.
"6, 7, 8, 9, 10! And the winner is Tsuki!" Koto's voice became confused. "Huh?!"
Damn, this tournament! Tsuki's face burned. She already dropped down as soon as Koto said 10. It's nothing but chaos here! If I could purify this island, I would!
"Woohoo! That's my girl!" Keiko applauded. She and Shizuru stood up and waved. "You showed that bucko who's boss!"
Tsuki's eyes crinkled. She waved back, unbothered by the demons' death glare.
"Good job, Tsuki," Hiei stated inside her mind. "You handled that quite nicely."
Tsuki's eyes suddenly landed on the tent. The masked fighter gave her a thumbs up. Hiei nodded, a smile slowly working its way across his face.
Thanks, Hiei. Tsuki noticed Ruka quivering while she stared at Hiei. His energy was coming back, and it was deadlier than ever.
"Bravo, Tsuki!" Botan complimented as the priestess came closer. "You taught that demon a lesson."
"Yeah," Kuwabara grinned. "You definitely showed him."
"Thanks, guys." Tsuki glanced at Kurama, who held his arm tightly. "I'll be right back to heal you, Kuwabara. I need to check on Kurama."
"No worries. I can breathe better now, thanks to you." Kuwabara's eyes twinkled. "You're a great healer."
Yusuke came forward and winked. "Leave these other two for me. They're going to be fish meat soon."
"You can do this, Yusuke," Tsuki said with a smile. "We still have a chance to win this round."
"You damn right." Yusuke cracked his fists, proceeding to the ring. "We're going to survive this tournament together."
Tsuki kneeled and touched her friend's shoulder. "How are you doing, Kurama?"
Kurama raised his chin, leaning his head against the wall. "I'll survive. Sorry I couldn't finish the other three as I planned."
"It doesn't matter. You're still alive. And we couldn't have the upper hand if it wasn't for you." Tsuki studied his arms. The death plant continued to sprout leaves. "How are your wounds?"
"My injuries from Team Mashōtsukai are nothing compared to this death plant. It'll take a great deal of energy and concentration to remove." Kurama's smile blossomed like a sun-touched flower. "I suppose we do reap what we sow, right?"
"Well, you don't have to reap alone." Tsuki sat next to him. While avoiding the leaves, she touched his right arm. "I'm here to help, Kurama. You already suffer enough for today."
"I suppose you're right." Kurama sighed in relief, relaxing his body. "Thanks, Tsuki."
"No problem."
While her hand glowed, Tsuki met Hiei's intense gaze. He continued to stare at her while speaking to the masked fighter.
Tsuki's breath shortened. Her body burned with strong emotions. She did her best to control her calm expression as a red flush crept across her cheeks.
Kurama winced, interrupting their silent moment of intimacy. "Yusuke needs to be cautious. Whatever plans Team Mashōtsukai has for this island, they want it very badly. These last two members are without a doubt, the strongest."
Tsuki exhaled. Her attention shifted to the ring. "Yes, and he's about to fight the toughest one right now."
