"Why don't you write a book?"
Kimi's words kept echoing on Takeru's mind for a while. It was one thing to tell stories about his days at the Digital World to both his and Hikari's children, another one was to write a book with their memories.
"Are you awake?" Kimi lifted her head and rested her chin on Takeru's forearm.
"I am." He rolled over a little to look at her. "I couldn't really sleep."
"Are you worried about something?"
"As a matter of fact, I am." He took a deep breath and looked at the ceiling. "I was thinking about what you said about writing a book."
"Well, what about it?"
"I'm thinking of doing it."
"Really?" She sat up and looked at him.
"Yeah, I think it can be a good idea."
"I'm so happy for you." Kimi leaned over and hugged him. "So when are you going to start?"
"I'm not sure yet, but I think I know how."
.
"I was pretty surprised when I read your message." Taichi said after he greeted Takeru and both men were heading to his car. "You sounded strange. Maybe worried."
"I'm sorry." Takeru replied after he got into the car. "I still don't know how to do it properly."
"So you said you wanted to write a book."
"Yes, about our memories from the Digital World."
"How do the others feel about it?"
"I don't know, I haven't told them yet. I came to you first because… well, you were our leader."
"I'm still not sure why you all gave me that title, as we were a team." Taichi turned on the engine. "But okay. So what do you need?"
"Well, I would like to interview you and hear what you have to say about your experience with the Digital World."
"Okay, I can do that. So how about dinner?"
"That sounds perfect to me."
Takeru was very surprised to see the amount of food on Taichi's plate when he sat across him at the table.
"I really don't get why you're so surprised." Taichi stated after he saw the look on his friend's face. "You already know I like to eat."
"I know, I'm just feeling sorry for Akiko."
"Hey!" He rolled his napkin and whipped Takeru in the hand.
"Ouch!"
"You deserved that for making fun of me."
"I didn't say anything other than the truth." Takeru laughed and Taichi joined him right away.
"So do you know what questions you want to ask me?" Taichi asked as soon as the waiter left with their orders.
"Actually, I do." He picked up a piece of paper and unfolded it on the table.
"You have a whole questionnaire for me?" Taichi asked with his eyebrows raised, as he looked at the paper.
"I'm not gonna ask you all of them. I want to interview the other ones as well."
"Oh, okay."
"So…" Takeru grabbed his phone and set up the audio recorder.
"Are you gonna record that?"
"Yeah, so I won't forget your answers. Don't worry, I'll delete them later."
"I'm not worried at all." Taichi stretched his arms and hands when the waiter came back with their dishes and Takeru was really embarrassed by that.
"Alright. What's your favorite memory from the Digital World?"
"Hmm…" He let go of his fork and knife and thought for a moment. "It's impossible to choose just one. But I think the first time Greymon evolved to MetalGreymon was a special moment to me. To see my crest shining for the first time was incredible."
"Oh yeah, that was a good moment. And then you got dragged into that hole and went back to Japan."
"That's right. But like I said, it's impossible to choose just one. Our whole journey was very meaningful to me."
"I can relate to that. It made me a better person and I found the best friends in the world."
"Of course you did. You found me."
Takeru threw his napkin at Taichi's face and laughed.
"Ow! I don't know why you're so violent today."
"Because your ego is way up the clouds today."
"Let's just go, okay?"
.
Yamato walked into the living room and placed a tea pot on the table, next to the small sandwiches and desserts Sora had made and then sat down next to her.
"So you want to include the moment I confessed to Yamato in your book?"
"That's right." Takeru confirmed. "Only if it's okay to both of you."
"I don't mind it." Yamato poured some tea to all of them and then looked at his wife. "Do you?"
"I don't know. I mean, I'm flattered that you want to include such a special moment for us, but it doesn't really have anything to do with the Digital World."
"You have a point, but I would still like to include it. You said it yourself, it is a special moment. I think you were pretty brave to confess to my brother, Sora."
"Indeed she was." He kissed her on the cheek. "I thank you for that everyday."
"Me too." She touched his hand softly and then turned to Takeru. "I'm not exactly sure about that. Hundreds, no, thousands of people will read about it and that makes me feel a little intimidated."
"I'll let you think about it." Takeru drank a sip of his tea. "I don't want you to feel pressured to accept it. I'll completely understand if you don't want me to include it."
"I promise I'll think about it."
"Don't worry. I can convince her." Yamato winked at his brother, who blushed heavily.
"I don't even want to know what you're going to do for that." He pressed his palm against his face.
"You don't have to."
"Okay, this is embarrassing." Sora had to intervene, completely flustered with the turn the conversation took. "I'm right here."
"I'm sorry, baby."
"I have another question to ask you, though."
"Okay, ask away."
"What's it like to be a Chosen Child?"
"What's it like to be a Chosen Child?" Sora repeated, trying to come up with her answer.
"Best thing that happened to me." Yamato replied, causing his brother and wife to look at him with smiles on their faces. "Having met Gabumon changed me deeply. I know this probably sounds cliché because we all feel this way, but it's true. I also got to meet the love of my life, my wife, the best partner I could ask for."
"Hmm, I don't know if you noticed that, but the question was about being a Chosen Child, not to make a declaration of love."
"After Gabumon, of course."
"Hey!" She playfully hit him in the arm.
"You heard my brother, this is about us being Chosen Children."
"Leave me out if it, please."
"You're still my number one though."
"I don't mind coming after Gabumon. You're certainly after Piyomon in my list."
"So this is a payback?"
"Oh God, I caused a fight between you two." Takeru said jokingly, he was really amused by the whole situation.
"Payback? I don't know what you are talking about." She stuck her tongue out at him. Then she turned her attention back to her brother-in-law. "So, for me being a Chosen Child was about learning about myself. I also learned how to handle my relationship with my mother. All my relationships got way better after I met Piyomon and all of you."
"That's so sweet, Sora."
"It really is." Yamato agreed. "I'm glad it had such an important impact for you. I got to witness some of it and I can say I'm really proud of the woman you've become."
"Aww, thank you, baby." She smiled at him. Then she turned to Takeru. "So do you have any other questions for us?"
"I do, actually."
.
"Hmm." Koushiro mumbled as he continued typing frantically on his laptop.
"Koushiro, could you please pay some attention to Takeru?" Tentomon begged. "He's trying to talk to you."
"Huh? I'm sorry, Takeru." He finally looked away from the screen. "I have some work to do and got carried away. What was the question anyway?"
"What's the scariest moment you went through as a Chosen Child?" Takeru repeated with a smile, thinking old habits died hard.
"Hmm the scariest moment?" Koushiro placed a finger under his chin and looked at the ceiling, a clear sign he was thinking about his answer.
"Maybe when we fell into that hole when we were looking for Gennai and you gave up your tag and crest. And your curious mind too."
"Oh yeah, that was scary indeed. But I'm not sure it was the scariest one."
"Oh I remember that." Takeru said, thoughtfully. "Yamato and I found you lying down. It was on the day Kabuterimon evolved to AtlurKabutermimon for the first time, wasn't it?"
"It was." Koushiro confirmed. "It was pretty awful down there. If it wasn't for Pabumon, I think it would have taken me longer to break that spell and find you all again."
"You're welcome." Tentomon said and the two men started laughing.
"So you decided to write a book with our memories, huh?"
"That's right." The blonde pressed the stop button on the audio recorder and put his phone away. "I was unsure at first, but now I think it will be a way to keep our memories alive somewhere else other than in our heads."
"I think it's a great idea. If there is anything else I can contribute with, let me know."
"I will definitely take you up on that. Thank you."
"Of course."
.
"I think we have all the ingredients we need." Mimi took a couple of steps back and looked at the sink with her hands on her hips.
"What are you going to make?" Palmon asked with curiosity beside her.
"An orange cake, but we need to wait for our guest first."
"Hideaki?"
"No." The mere mention of her boyfriend made Mimi blush heavily and swoon for some minutes. "Takeru is coming over. He said he wanted my help to impress Kimi. So I thought a cake would be nice."
"You're not gonna put anything weird or unusual in it, right?"
"Of course not. Those days are long gone. He's here." She glanced towards her living room when the doorbell rang and went to open her door. "Hello!"
"Hi, Mimi." He replied in the same cheerful tone and was slightly surprised when she threw her arms and pulled him into a hug. But he should have seen it coming.
"Come on in." She stepped aside to give him some space.
"Thank you." Takeru gave her a smile as he walked in.
"I have to confess I was very surprised and intrigued when you said you wanted my help to impress Kimi."
"Hmm, about that…"
"That's a lie, isn't it?" Mimi glanced at him over her shoulder.
"Well, yeah." He felt embarrassed to admit that. "I'm sorry."
"It's okay." She reassured him with a smile. "Not everyone can take Mimi's unique taste in food!"
"Mimi!"
"Oops, I may have gotten ahead of myself again." She gave an awkward laugh and was soon joined by her partner and her friend.
"So, why did you want to meet me?" Mimi asked as she gathered the ingredients to make the cake.
"Well..." Takeru grabbed his phone and placed it on the table after setting up the audio recorder. "I'm going to write a book."
"A book?" She turned around and looked at him, holding a cup full of flour. "As in a novel?"
"No, a book of memories from our days in the Digital World."
"That's such a cool idea, Takeru!" She pressed her palms together and smiled widely. "When are you going to publish it?"
"I have no idea. There are other things I need to do first."
"Of course." Mimi turned her back on him and continued to work on the cake. "So, a book abou tour memories in the Digital World, huh?"
"That's right."
"So, how did you come up with this idea?"
"Well, it was Kimi's idea actually. She said it was a great way to keep our memories alive forever and it can be a way for our kids to read them whenever they want to."
"That's awesome!" She said as she filled the baking dish with the dough. "I have no doubt they'd love that."
"I think they will too. It's what led me here today."
"Huh?" She looked at him with her eyebrows raised in confusion.
"I'm interviewing all the Chosen Children about their experience in the Digital World. I want to include that in the book too."
"That's amazing, Takeru!" She joined her hands and had a wide smile on her face. "I assume the questions are in this paper."
"That's right." Takeru unfolded it and then pressed the record button on his phone. "Ready?"
"Ready. Bring it on."
"Okay." He couldn't help but smile at her answer for a moment. "What's the moment that impacted you the most as a Chosen Child?"
"Hmm..." Mimi took a few minutes to think. "I think when I was turned into a child again. The second time Around. It was hard to see Taichi and Yamato having to fight Menoa and us alone at the same time."
"I can imagine. I don't know if it's a good thing that I was unconscious or not."
"I think it is." She took the pan out of the oven after the timer alarm went off and placed it on the stove. "Honestly, I would have preferred it that way."
"I suppose it was a difficult moment for all of you."
"It was." She handed him a slice of the warm cake. "I hope you like eating cakes while they're hot."
"I do, thank you."
"You're welcome."
.
Takeru casually checked his phone while leaning against the wall outside the hospital waiting for Jou to walk out after finishing his shift.
"Hey, Jou!"
"Takeru, what are you doing here?"
"I wanted to talk to you."
"Is everything alright? Is someone hurt?"
"No, no one is hurt and everything is fine." Takeru couldn't help but smile at how many times he had to explain his reasons. He didn't mind though, he enjoyed seeing everyone's reaction everytime he told them about the book. "Would you like to go somewhere, so we can talk?"
"Sure." Jou replied with his eyebrows raised, still trying to understand what was going on. "I know a good restaurant we can go to."
"That sounds perfect to me."
"So, I want to talk to you about the Digital World." Takeru said after he and Jou sat at a table.
"What about it?" Jou had the same alarmed tone in his voice as before. "Is there a new menace there?"
"No." He assured his friend with a smile. He was glad there wasn't any new evil forces for many years. "The Digital World is as peaceful as it's ever been."
"That's great." The blue haired man sighed. "So what's wrong with it? I'm confused."
"Nothing. I want to talk about it because I'm going to write a book about our adventures in the Digital World."
"A book? That's amazing, Takeru! So how can I help you with it?"
"Well..." Takeru unfolded the paper with the questions and set up the audio recorder on his phone. "There are a few questions I want to ask you."
"Alright."
"Great." He pressed the record button and put it on the table, face down. "If you could go back in time and change any moment you went through in the Digital World, what would you change and why?"
"That's an interesting question." He intertwined his fingers together. "I know that sounds cliché, but I don't think I would change anything. However, I would be more confident about things there."
"That's exactly what I thought you'd say." Takeru stated with a smile.
"Is that so?"
"It is." He nodded. "We all got stronger during our adventures."
"That's true. I'm happy and proud to see what each one of you has become and how far you've come."
"I know what you mean. I think the same."
"So when are you going to publish the book?"
"I'm not sure yet. I need to put everything together first."
"You aren't sure about publishing it, are you?"
"Is that so obvious?"
"Yes. What's the problem?"
"I don't know. It won't be our story anymore, once it gets published. People will read it."
"You have a good point. But that's what books are for."
"That's true. Do you want anything else?"
"No, I'm good. If you are too, I'm going to ask for the bill."
"That sounds perfect to me."
.
A smile appeared on Takeru's lips as soon as his feet touched the familiar ground of the Digital World. Hikari stopped beside him with the same expression. She put her hair behind her ear and closed her eyes.
"It's always a peaceful feeling coming here."
"I know what you mean. I love coming here to relax and reflect."
"So what do you have to tell me?"
"What makes you think I have something to tell you? Maybe I just wanted to hang out with my best friend."
"Please." She tried to sound as serious as she could, but the smile on her face gave her away. "Over two decades of friendship and you pull that on me? I know you well enough to know you have something to tell me. Something big, I even dare to say."
"That's such a low move..." Takeru couldn't help but laugh. "I hate that you can read me so well."
"I know, I love it too." Hikari teased back. "So what is it that you have to tell me? It's about your book, isn't it?"
"It is... wait a moment, how did you know about it?"
"One thing you should know about Taichi: he loves gossiping."
"I should have known."
"You really should. So tell me about this book."
"It's a book about our memories here. Kimi suggested that idea after she saw me telling our kids stories about our adventures."
"That was very nice and sweet of her. I'm glad you found such an amazing and asupportive woman. It makes me really happy."
"And it makes me happy to know that." Takeru said genuinely. "I'm glad I found her too, I'm a really lucky man."
"I can see that." Hikari smiled softly. "So, a book about our memories in the Digital World, huh?"
"That's right."
"It will be nice to read what I missed from another point of view. I'm excited about that."
"I hope you'll enjoy it."
"I'm sure I will. So what question are you going to ask me?"
"Oh. Of course Taichi told you about this as well. Why am I even surprised?" He chuckled for a moment. "Would you change anything in your Journey as a Chosen Child? If so, why?"
"Hmm..." Hikari placed her index finger under her chin and thought for a moment. "I really like my journey the way it is, I just regret making Tailmon wait for me such a long time. I'll never be able to understand how she felt and Vamdemon would never have taken her to the dark side."
"I know it was a tough moment for you." The blonde said reassuringly and placed his hand on her shoulder. "But you two found your way to each Other eventually, like any true partners would."
"That's true."
"Did I ever tell you about when Patamon died?"
"Only briefly. I know it was a sensitive subject for you, so I understand that you never really wanted to talk about it."
"Yeah, it wasn't easy at first and it lasted a few years. He died the first time he evolved to Angemon."
"I'm sorry you had to go through that."
"It's okay, I'm glad I wasn't alone. Yamato and the others were very supportive."
"I'm glad too." Hikari paused for few seconds. "So what happened next?"
.
Kimi slowly opened her eyes and blinked a few times to adjust to the darkness of the room. Then she rolled over and saw that Takeru's side of the bed was empty. She stood up, wrapped herself in a robe and then went to find her husband.
"There you are." She said when she walked in the kitchen, where Takeru was sitting at the table. It was rather dark, the only light coming from a lamp he placed on it.
"Did I wake you?" He looked at her briefly and returned his focus to the amount of paper spread all over the table. "I tried to be as quiet as I could. I hope I didn't wake Kenichi up as well."
"You didn't. I'm sure Kenichi is still asleep." She assured him and then stood behind his chair, wrapping her arms around his neck and bending down towards his ear. "Isn't it late to be working on your book?"
"It is, but I've been so focused on it I lost track of time."
"I know. I love how dedicated you are about things you are passionate about."
"I'm glad you love it so much." He smiled when she kissed him on the cheek tenderly. Then he watched her pull out a chair beside him. "What are you doing?"
"I'm sitting here and keeping you some company."
"You don't have to. I don't want you to give up on sleeping because of me."
"I'm not. I really want to be here with you. It's an important moment for you."
"You're unreal, do you know that?"
"So I was told." Kimi bragged with a large smile on her lips. "So can I help you with something?"
"I don't think there's much to be done. I'm just writing down the answers, so they can be fully accurate."
"Ah, I see. And they are on your phone."
"That's right."
"So you can actually do it any time you want." She commented and glanced at him from the corner of her eyes.
"I got it." Takeru gathered his paper and piled it up. "You won."
"I didn't know we were competing."
"Very funny." He teased her and stood up, stretching his arms and neck. "Oh, I really needed this."
"You've been sitting for a few hours."
"Most definitely."
"So does that mean you're going to sleep?" Kimi asked over her shoulder as she made her way towards their bedroom.
"It does, but first…" He reached for her left hand and she turned around to face him. She took a quick glance at their hands for some seconds. "I want to thank you for encouraging me to do this and being so supportive of me. It means the world to me."
"You're welcome. But really, the credit is all yours. You're the one who has put on the hard work. I'm really proud of you."
"I love you." He took one step closer to her and let go of one of her hands to caress her cheek softly.
The intensity of the look in his eyes made her heart beat faster, but she still managed to smile warmly at him.
"I love you too." She closed the distance between them and pressed her lips against his.
