Chapter 373 Hale and No

"

David Hale sat on one side of the table in an interview room at Charming PD. Josh Kohn sat across from him. Hale didn't bother hiding his distaste for the man.

"Jax Teller threw me through a window at Floyd's Barber Shop," Josh Kohn complained. He had plain nonSpongeBob Band-Aids on a couple of cuts on his face.

"OK," Hale said calmly. "What do you expect me to do about it?"

"Your job," Kohn said sarcastically.

"If Teller files an assault complaint, I will do my job and arrest you."

"He files a complaint?" Kohn raised his voice so loud he was almost shouting. He couldn't believe he'd heard Hale right.

"I have two witnesses that said you attacked him with a knife. If he threw you through a window, it's looking like self-defense from where I sit," Hale said.

He wasn't feeling sympathy for Kohn. He shouldn't have attacked Scarlett. He warned him. He should have cleared out of town.

When he talked with Scarlett, she had agreed not to tell Jax about what happened with Kohn. He wondered if she changed her mind. Tara might have said something to Jax. It didn't matter now. Jax must know or he wouldn't have thrown him through the window.

"Well sit somewhere else then," Kohn said with heavy sarcasm. "The man attacked me while I was having a hot shave."

"Floyd gave the knife you tried to use on Teller to the patrol officer who responded. We've got it in evidence."

"He attacked me," Kohn said indignantly.

"I've got witnesses to the contrary. Floyd's a reliable witness and if he says you attacked Teller, that's pretty much it," Hale said.

He knew that Josh Kohn of the mighty ATF believed himself to be above him in law enforcement hierarchy. Feds always believed they were superior to local or state law enforcement. They might be on the same side, but it didn't mean they always liked each other.

All things considered, Hale thought Kohn was lucky Jax hadn't done more damage to him. If Kohn tried to hurt Scarlett again, there was no doubt in Hale's mind that Jax might kill Kohn.

"I'm a Federal agent and you are going to take the word of a small town barber over mine?"

"I've known Floyd my whole life. You are a Federal agent who has been conducting an unauthorized investigation and are facing some serious repercussions when you get back to Chicago. Floyd is more credible."

"Over a Federal agent?" Kohn asked incredulously.

"When that Federal agent is you," Hale said with a smile. "I'll tell you what I will do, I'll bring in Teller and ask him if he assaulted you or if he were acting in self-defense. Want to take a guess on what he'll say?"

Kohn's face reddened angrily.

"You're just as corrupt as your chief of police."

"Get out," Hale said getting to his feet. "Don't waste my time unless a real crime has been committed."

"I'm getting the hell out of this incestuous dump of a town today," Kohn said getting to his feet.

"Best news I've heard all day," Hale said holding the interview room door open so Kohn could exit.

Hale hoped for Kohn's sake that he was really leaving town before he got himself killed.
