Little Toy Bikers and a Woman on the Run
"
Chapter 377 Helping Out the Police
"
When Jax got the text from Sack, he was furious. He told Clay he was leaving to pay Hale a visit. Jax rode his bike to the PD. It was the first time he'd been on it since he'd gotten shot. His leg and ass were already throbbing from assisting Kohn through the window at Floyd's barber shop, but he was so angry he didn't even feel the pain.
Hale had already incurred his wrath when he'd gone to Scarlett behind his back and convinced her not to tell him that Kohn attacked her. The fact that Kohn was still in town after Hale told Scarlett Kohn was leaving proved that Hale was too gullible when it came to his law enforcement buddy. Who the hell knows what he would have done to Scarlett if she hadn't had Sack with her?
Jax stormed into the police station.
"Where's Hale?" he demanded.
Hale came out of the department's breakroom with a cup of coffee in his hand.
"Are you here to press charges against Kohn for assault?" Hale asked in his calm professional law enforcement voice.
Hale was lucky that Jax's self-control kicked in or he would have taken a swing at him or grabbed him by the shirt and bounced him off a wall. Jax knew he'd get locked up and he couldn't protect Scarlett from behind bars. That was the only reason he was able to restrain himself.
"You really can't figure out that answer for yourself?" Jax asked sarcastically.
"Let's go in here," Hale said walking into an interview room.
"Kohn's still in town," Jax said. "He's watching Scarlett. I've got a prospect with her to protect her or who the hell knows what he would have done to her."
Hale shut the door carefully.
"Have a seat. I need to get you on the record about what happened at Floyd's."
"He pulled a knife, there was a scuffle and he went through the window."
"Even without hearing that, I knew that was going to be your story," Hale said drily. "I told him that it looked like self-defense to me. Floyd and Sack both said that he pulled a knife and that started the fight. That's the official record."
"That's my official story."
"I warned him to leave Scarlett alone before you threw him through the window."
"You also told her not to tell me that he attacked her yesterday. Sack saw the attack. If I hadn't known about the attack, she wouldn't have had protection today."
"When he came here, he told me he was leaving town today."
"You believe him?"
Hale thought about that for several moments.
"I did at the time, but I'm not so sure now. He's got to report to work on Monday. He's going to have to catch a plane and go back or he's going to lose his job."
"If they are ordering him back to work, he's already in trouble. Let me guess, this investigation of the Sons was his own private vendetta."
"Of the record, it was and he's in trouble for some other things. I think he may have been behind the attack on your guy Chucky."
"Makes sense. If he's in trouble at work and he thinks it's hopeless, that makes him very dangerous," Jax said.
"Yeah, that could be true. He still seemed rational when I talked to him about the window incident."
"I've got Sack with Scarlett during the day and I'll handle evenings and nights. I've got Steve who does security for Oswald watching over Tara. The hospital can keep her safe at work and he'll escort her to and from work and stay with her when she isn't at work. Oswald is fine with giving Steve flexible hours while we deal with this. I'm protecting the girls until I know that he's back in Chicago. That's the only way short of killing him that will keep the girls safe."
"Jax, it isn't that I don't want to keep them safe. There's no way I can legally."
"I guess it's a good thing that I'm an outlaw and I don't have that problem."
"If he tries to hurt them . . ."
"You still can't do much. Even if you arrested him, he'd get out on bail."
"I'm doing everything I can," Hale said.
"So am I. That's why I've got protection for both of them."
For a second, Jax felt sorry for Hale. He knew that he wanted to help Scarlett and Tara, but the law tied his hands. That was why outlaws would always be needed.
"I'll let you know when Kohn's back in Chicago."
"I'll protect Scarlett and Tara."
"Very off the record, I'm glad you are watching over them. Thanks."
"SAMCRO always tries to help out law enforcement when we can," Jax drawled.
He and Hale laughed.
Jax returned to SAMCRO with a couple of boxes of ice cream sandwiches. The guys loved a little afternoon break with an ice cream sandwich.
The entire time he worked, laughed and joked with the guys, his mind was on Scarlett. His mind seemed to be on her all the time. He didn't know what he used to thing about before he met her—maybe chasing girls or SAMCRO. He liked thinking about her. It made him happy.
He shook his head with disgust. He was getting to be as bad as Juice.
