Chapter 372 Scarlett Rescue
"
Scarlett hurried down the hall in the direction of Tara's voice. Each step she took pulled the muscles in her back. Taking longer steps trying to walk faster sent even more pain through her body. She ignored it.
When she walked through the doorway, she saw Josh Kohn clutching a hand towel to his abdomen slumped against one of the bedroom walls. Tara was deathly pale, a gun dangled from her hand.
"What happened?" Scarlett asked.
"He was going to rape and kill me."
"I wasn't going to rape you. You were into it."
Tara looked anxiously at Kohn and Scarlett.
"Maybe you could call Jax," Tara suggested.
"That's a really bad idea," Josh said still on the floor.
"Shut up," Scarlett and Tara said in unison without either bothering to look at him.
"I'm not calling Jax," Scarlett said.
"Good idea," Josh said approvingly.
"This is your decision," Scarlett said. "You have two choices. We can call the police, you tell your story and he'll lie. Maybe he'll get convicted or maybe not. Attempted rape. No visible injuries. A college student raped an unconscious college girl and got probation. You may get that type of outcome if he even gets convicted. It could get pled down to something minor and he would walk with community service. He will come after you again."
"No, I won't. I promise," Josh said.
His words wouldn't have convinced even the most gullible.
"Or you shoot him and it's self defense. You shot him once. You were in shock, you tossed him a towel to stop the blood because you were afraid to go closer to him. He tried for the gun and you were forced to shoot him again. It's self-defense."
"It's murder," Josh said outraged. "The blonde whore is crazy."
"The blonde being me is not a whore," Scarlett said. "And who isn't a little crazy at times? It's not murder. It's preemptive self-defense."
"Preemptive self-defense," Tara spoke the words slowly and thoughtfully.
"It's fucking murder," Kohn said.
"Shut up," the woman told him again in unison.
"Tara to make this self-defense, you don't have much time left to decide."
"She's going to screw you over, Tara," Kohn said. "She'll tell the police she saw you shoot me in cold blood to get you locked up for good."
"You really are stupid," Scarlett said looking at Kohn. "If I ratted Tara out to the police, Jax would dump my dizzy blonde ass in a split second. He and I would be done for good. I love Jax. I'm not doing anything to destroy my relationship with him."
"Oh, fuck," Kohn muttered under his breath.
"Can't we just call Jax for help?" Tara begged.
"Tara, I am not calling Jax to come over here to shoot Kohn for you. You have to take control of this situation. You've got just a minute or two to decide. Either shoot him or not, but if you do shoot him, here's how to get away with it," Scarlett said. She explained about bullet trajectories and how they can determine where she stood when she fired the shot. She suggested that Tara act out the story she was going to tell the police when she shoots him, so when she tell she police the story, she's talking from an actual memory.
"You are one cold blooded crazy bitch," Kohn said to Scarlett. "Listen Tara, just call 911 and I'll tell them I attacked you."
Scarlett knew deep inside her that Kohn would come back maybe for Tara, maybe for her or maybe for both, but she believed he would come back if he lived.
"What would you do?"
"I'd shoot him again," Scarlett replied promptly. "If you shoot him, I'm going to say that I walked in to bring you the scrubs, heard the shot and rushed as fast as I could down the hall. When I come into this room, you tell me a story and that's the story I'm going to give to the cops."
Tara took a deep breath.
"OK. I'll make a decision."
"You've got about 30 seconds. I'm going back to the door," Scarlett said.
She walked back down the hall still clutching the bag the scrubs were in. She stood at the door and began to count loud enough for Tara to hear her.
