Chapter 408 Answer Your Phone

Louise going missing had rattled Jax. As they searched, he got this sinking feeling that someone had taken her and it was a race to find her before she was killed. He didn't want to think about her being dead already. The MC world was violent and dangerous, but they didn't bring women into it. Civilians were off limits. He wasn't used to violence happening to women especially to women in Charming.
Despite there being no church or party, the MC decided to get pizza at the end of the day's search. Old ladies were being included in the pizza party. Gemma was in and Donna was bringing Kenny and Ellie. Jax wanted to call Scarlett and tell her about the plans, but his calls kept going to voice mail. It brought back memories of that day when they found a naked blonde woman on the outskirts of town and he hadn't been able to reach Scarlett then.
She could have left the police department maybe to go to her store or run errands. He cursed softly as his latest call went to voice mail. He left the clubhouse and rode to the police department. She had damned well better be there. He didn't want to think about what it would mean if she weren't at the police department. Her van was parked in the same spot as it had been this morning.
He relaxed a little but just because her van was in the parking lot, it didn't mean that she was safe. He needed to see her with his own eyes. Jax walked into the police department and was then escorted behind the locked door to police operations.
Scarlett was sitting at a desk with a phone to her ear perfectly safe. He felt relief wash over him before the anger hit. He wanted until she put the phone down and made some notes on a piece of paper before walking over to her.
"Do you have a minute?" he asked. He kept his voice level but it was a fight to keep the fury out of his voice.
"Is something wrong?"
"Not here," he said tersely.
They walked outside together standing where they had earlier.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"You haven't been answering your damned phone. That's what the fuck is wrong," Jax said angrily.
Scarlett reached into her pocket and pulled out her cell phone.
"I put it on vibrate because sometimes I get vendor calls. I'm getting a cell just for the business next week."
She checked the settings on her phone.
"I guess I screwed up when I turned the phone ringer off and then I forgot to put it on vibrate or I screwed that up too. I'm sorry."
"You should have been more careful and answered your damned phone."
He knew that he was overreacting but between Kohn coming after her and Louise's disappearance, he was on edge when it came to her safety.
"OK," she agreed. "I'll be more careful. Is that why you came here? To chew me out over my phone?"
"I didn't know where the hell you were."
She reached out and stroked his beard gently.
"It always surprises me that it's so soft and not scratchy like stubble," she said smiling at him. "Have I told you lately how handsome and sexy you are?"
"Scarlett," Jax said shaking his head. She'd expertly defused his anger by not feeding into it.
"You know, I could really use the feel of my old man's arms around me now."
"Old man?" he asked, his lips curving into a smile. "That's the first time you've called me that."
She stroked his upper lip with the tip of her forefinger.
"I'm fine calling you my old man. I still don't like to be called an old lady. It's an age thing."
He wrapped his arms around her. Damn Scarlett was good. He wasn't mad at her anymore.
Author's Note: To the guest reviewer who asked about when Jax and Scarlett were finally going to have sex—SOON. There's one major conversation that they need to have before and you'll know the conversation when you hear it. That's all I'm going to say. Time wise I'd say in the story maybe a week to two weeks. In writing time, depending on what plot points I have to cover between now and then, it's a little harder to say. Two to six weeks depending on how often I post chapters. Obviously the more I post the sooner I'll get there, but I can't post everyday. I've got to wrap my Quarantine story and I am also writing Taming Ava. It's in the "M" listings.
