Eden was a place of beauty. Swaying grasses met trees filled with bountiful fruits as crystal clear rivers were decorated with white sandy beaches. Creatures of all sorts roamed the garden, most Adam had even named, though some remained nameless, their bodies seeming less…refined then those who had one. It was a paradise for all…or it was supposed to be.
Lately, Adam felt it was more like a cage, pining him in with someone that never seemed to love him back, no matter what he did.
He leaned back against the blackened bark of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, feeling a comforting chill rise from the tree. Ripe red fruit hung above him, forbidden for him to eat else he would surely be unmade, or so the angels told him. Closing his eyes, he felt his thoughts drift back towards his argument with Lilith.
They'd been at the river Lilith had named Gihon, having just finished with their tasks. Hands stained with dirt, Adam grinned as he saw wiped his forehead on the back of his arm. Sera had come down to teach them how to till the soil and work the land, saying that one day they would do it for all of Earth and claim dominion over the land.
Adam had enjoyed himself, a grin on his face as he placed the seeds in the ground, covering them up so new life would grow along the barren outer edges of Eden where the garden hadn't finished expanding yet.
But Lilith…
"Why must we do this demeaning work? Are we their pets?" She hissed as soon as Sera had left. "Look at them, so radiant and powerful compared to us! Why could we not be like them?"
"Because they're angels, Lily." He squirmed a little as she stared at him. Was she getting ready to shout at him again. "And we're humans. They're made from God's light, and we're made from dust. They're made to rule over heaven, and we're made to rule over Eden."
"But look at them compared to us! All the might of the heavens were gifted to them, while we were gifted nothing but dirt!" She thew a clump of mud to the side. "Are we not hand crafted by El Elyon, same as them? Yet we are like the lowest of worms while they are like the highest of eagles! We should be like them!"
"Lily," Adam gulped, hoping that none of the angels had heard that. "Don't say th-"
"Or what? You'll just side with the angels again and again, rather than your wife!" Lilith yelled. "Helel was right about you! You are a nothing more than a dog to them!"
Adam felt a deep pain in his chest at her words, but surely, she did not mean them. "Please Lilith, let us not fight about this again. We're doing as we were meant to by the Creator's design, and surely, we shall be rewarded for it." He gave her a soft smile. "Besides, the angels may have their powers, but that will never compare to the love I have for you." Reaching forward, he gently grabbed her by the hand, only for her to yank it back.
"…Your love?" Lilith scoffed. "If you truly loved me, you would stand by my side on this, but clearly you don't." The First Woman's face curled up in a sneer. "Why won't you just go and leave me alone?"
Adam opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out. The pain in his chest had grown and grown with each remark, and he felt himself on the verge of tears. Turning away from her, he slowly walked away.
Lily…Lilith wasn't the only one who wanted to be alone.
"No matter what I do, she always seems angry with me. I bring her fruit, I get yelled at. I try to impress her by doing my tasks, and I get yelled at. I try and make her some clothes, and I get yelled at." His voice broke as he felt the tears start to form in his eyes. "What am I doing wrong?"
He just didn't know what to do anymore. Everything he did seemed to make Lilith angrier, and most of the time, she'd end up screaming at him. Or storm off to be with Helel. Adam's fists balled, tearing the grass up. Adam…didn't know what to think of Helel.
The Daystar was an angel, a creation of God, and a beautiful one at that, even Adam would admit. With his almost painfully bright golden eyes, sky blue cheeks, and long blonde hair, Adam could see why his siblings in heaven had nothing but adoration for him. When Helel had smiled, promising that he was in the garden to help Adam, the First Man had such high hopes that the angel could work miracles just as he did with the stars above.
And at first, Helel had. He'd walked with Adam in the garden, laughed along with his jokes, even taught Adam about the different kinds of stars.
"Did I ever tell you Adam, about how stars work?" They were in their favorite place near the center of the garden, a meadow of bright blue flowers that went as far as they eye could see. Seated on the ground, Adam opened his mouth to reply, but Helel continued before he could. "They start off as nothing but gas and dust."
"Like me?" Adam asked, an eager smile on his face.
"Yes," Helel chuckled. "Just like you. They condense down, getting tighter and hotter, until they begin to burn! In all sorts of colors too! Red, Blue, White, Yellow! It's all very beautiful, I tell you Adam! Some of my finest creations!"
"Wow!" Adam leaned forward. "I can't imagine what a blue sun would look like!"
"Well, once we finish with Tevel, we'll start on all the other Earths! Personally, I'm hoping God will put Tziya around one, and if he does, I'll take you with me to visit!" Helel rubbed his hands together. "Maybe I'll even show you a black hole!"
"What's that?" Adam asked.
"Well, it starts when a massive star's core collapses in on itself, and as the star implodes, going supernova in the process, what remains becomes an inescapable hole of gravity called a black hole! It can even suck in light!" Helel placed a hand on his chest. "Pretty amazing right?"
"Definitely!" Adam said. They talked well into the afternoon, before Sera came to help teach Adam his new task of naming.
But once Adam had started to name things, to create on his own, his friend Helel had become distant. His visits had become rare, then non-existent, and his laughter no longer filled Adam's ears. Instead, he seemed to focus his attention on Lilith, who had nothing but praise for the angel while she'd nothing but scorn for the First Man.
And now, here he lay with neither friend nor wife to comfort him.
Curling his legs against his chest, he stared out into the garden, seeing the animals with their partners. Husbands and wives, so happy to be with each other. Adam yearned for that, the hollow feeling in his chest desperately wishing to be filled.
Shook from his thoughts as something cold touched his arm, he looked down to find…his shadow? He looked around, seeking to find what had touched him, but saw nothing. And then he was touched again, and he saw it.
An oil like darkness crept beneath his shadow, prodding him like that octopus he had named, curious with its soft touches. Adam could see no eyes, yet he could feel this being watching him all the same. Perhaps it was like those blind millipedes that crawled along the ground? Completely blind but making up for it in other ways?
Adam smiled softly, placing his fingers along one of the black tendrils as it curled around his digit. "Well, you are a strange one, aren't you?" He lifted his arm slightly, a trail of blackened ooze dripping from his finger. It felt cold yet…pleasant. Like a cool evening after a hot summer day. "I've never seen something like you before. Do you have a name?"
The tendril stopped, as if questioning what that was. Now, Adam was confused. Sure, his names gave definition to all things, but every being's soul was crafted to bear those words by the angels themselves. Yet this being…didn't.
Well, that wouldn't do.
"Would you like one?" He asked. As the Lord of All Names, it was well within his power to grant them. The creature…well, it could not nod, but Adam felt as if it had, its tendrils slithering up and down his finger with an almost eager anticipation. "You are much like the tree roots, aren't you? Sitting beneath the ground, beneath the shadows of the tall tree. Yes, I have a name for you."
The shadow shuddered as the air grew thick, Adam feeling the words form in his throat as the shadow became more than just a mere shadow, it's tendrils thicker and more like grasping hands while a pair of glowing black orbs appeared within the black mass, seeming to suck in all light like those black holes Helel described.
This creature, Adam thought, was beautiful.
And he'd the perfect name for her.
"Roo."
AN: And there we go! The first chapter of the Adam x Eve (Roo) fanfic! Really liked writing this one, as I have a degree in Theology, so this was quite a fun one to write! Plenty of backstory and foreshadowing for was going to occurs, a little bit of lore for the angels and El Elyon (Means Most High God, a remnant of when Judaism was polytheistic), and some more fun to be had in future chapters :D Plus Asherah (God's Wife/Consort, again, back when Judaism was polytheistic). I'd never seen her in a Hazbin Hotel fic before, but in this, she tends to the Earths and helps spread life (which is what the often forgotten Tree of Life connects to, kind of like a big esoteric Yggdrasil :D).
A bit of the Seven Earths lore in there (Tevel is Earth as we know it) too! Anyway, if you enjoy my fics, you can always read a chapter ahead on my p-a-t-r-e-o-n (Halo3vsloz)!
