Hi, everyone! Welcome to Book II of the Mizuki series. I hope you all enjoy this story as much as I did while writing it. Please feel free to review, I would love to hear your thoughts.
Disclaimer: I don't own My Hero Academia or any of its characters. Mizuki, however, is my own creation.
Let's start with the story, shall we?*
Chapter 12
Mizuki let out a breath as she walked down the hallway, on her way to the infirmary where her brother and Izuku rested. The match against All Might was a tough one that had both of them injured gravely and they were forced to rest.
The entire day was exhausting.
They finished off with the practical exams of all the groups and were confronted with their own weaknesses. Everyone had to face something to grow in each match even if they lost, there was something they took from it.
Mizuki, however, took much more than she bargained for. She looked down at her hand palms and frowned. Of all things to happen to her, she never thought that it would lead to such a turn of events. It was still so surreal.
Mizuki had an unknown type Quirk that resembled Aizawa's in a way. How was it even possible? Moreover, if she had it, did it mean that her brother had it too? He never showed any possible signs of this peculiar Quirk. She seemed to be the only one. Aizawa said that he would explain everything in due time for the training camp but she couldn't help but wonder.
A headache was soon to emerge as her mind filled up with unwanted and unanswered questions. There was no way she could tell her brother about everything now and she didn't even know what she was going to tell her parents.
They would definitely be concerned if they heard that she was given the day off of the exit ceremony only to be informed of the mess. She needed to prepare herself for questions from everyone the moment she saw them all again. Questions she didn't have the answers to.
"This is shit," she cursed aloud and held her arms as she walked on. Maybe it would be better if she forgot about everything for now. She wanted to make sure that Izuku and her brother were both alright. She could worry about her problems later on.
She found a faint smile forming on her lips as she thought about Eijiro. He stuck to her side and offered to keep her company until it was time for her to go home. He was being so supportive and she didn't know what she ever did to have him by her side. She owed him…a lot.
The door of the infirmary slid open as she stepped in front of it, her heart briefly giving a tight squeeze. The murmuring of voices inside stopped the moment she appeared in the doorway, and two pairs of eyes rested on her physique.
"Young Mizuki, what are you doing here this late?" All Might asked the ash blonde teenager. She had her bag by her side and wore her school uniform.
"I'm here to check up on my brother and Izu-kun. I'm not leaving without my brother. Besides, I'm not in a rush or anything," Mizuki said the last part in a hushed tone. She honestly didn't want to go home alone.
"Ah, I see. Well done in your match today, Young Mizuki." All Might gave her a thumbs up, his big grin plastered on his face. Mizuki stared at him, recalling everyone who knew about the secret. He was one of them on the list.
She chuckled dryly and looked away. "Don't patronize me, All Might. You know what happened," Mizuki said and the male twitched at her reply. His thumbs up fell away but he managed to keep his grin.
"Young Mizuki-""Recovery Girl how are these two idiots doing? They took quite a beating," Mizuki changed the subject, ignoring the teacher. She didn't want to hear another inspiring speech about how lucky she was from the number one hero.
"They're going to be just fine. They should wake up soon. I managed to heal Midoriya's back and the injuries your brother sustained," Recovery Girl replied and Mizuki grunted, crimson orbs quivering as she took in the peaceful expression of her unconscious brother. To think such a clam expression held so much rage.
"I'm glad you stopped by, Mizuki." Recovery Girl walked passed the girl and towards her desk. "All the symptom you've experienced until now should fade away. If you have any problems, you can always come to me," she said and Mizuki grunted.
She sat down on one of the chairs next to her brother's bed and a deep frown came onto her lips. All Might watched the girl, a painful ache in his chest. Her usual blazing eyes were glossed over and he could only imagine how she felt.
He wanted to say something. He wanted to motivate her but what could he say? They all knew this would be the result if they told her whether it was sooner or later.
He coughed, his time starting to run out and then cleared his throat. "Then, I'll be off. Thank you for everything, Recovery Girl," All Might gave the older female a wave and he nodded. He gave Mizuki one last glance, almost expecting her to say something but she only stared at her brother's sleeping face.
Young Midoriya, I hope that you will be able to help your best friend to overcome this. If anyone can help her, I know it's you. He thought as he left, leaving Mizuki and Recovery Girl in silence inside the infirmary.
Mizuki's eyes travelled towards Izuku as he slept almost with a pained expression and then had her eyes travel towards her brother's gloved hand. She felt her hand twitch but stopped herself from coming in contact with him.
She already hurt enough. If she had to avoid as much physical contact as possible until she could control it, then so be it. She could feel him through their connection, the calmness making her body want to give into exhaustion.
She was drained mentally and physically. Her body and mind both yearned for sleep and yet she was forcing her eyes to stay open. Unfortunately, her will power wasn't enough to keep her head from slowly lolling.
M-Maybe I should just rest my eyes until they wake up. She thought and lay her head down on her crossed arms. She gave her brother one last look and blinked slowly. It was merely seconds before she was unconscious and her breathing deep.
Recovery Girl barely turned her back for a moment and when she turned towards the two patients, she found Mizuki fast asleep. She smiled softly and shook her head. She left the girl to rest, knowing full well that she needed it.
Later on…
Green eyes slowly fluttered open as his unconsciousness faded. The dark pit that held him captive finally released him from his recovering sleep. He could feel the slight numbness of his body, his back prickling slightly.
He blinked at the ceiling above him and after a few moments of blurry vision, his eyes settled. That's right. He was resting in the infirmary. He had his back injured gravely in the fight against All Might and Recovery Girl healed him.
He slowly pushed himself up in a sitting position, his hand unconsciously rubbing the side of his head as he looked around. Katsuki was still asleep on the bed next to him, Recovery Girl nowhere to be seen.
He blinked, his hand stopping with its movement when he caught sight of Mizuki. She lay asleep on crossed arms, on her brother's infirmary bed. The peaceful expression she wore mimicked the other teen's expression, her face pale and light bags beneath her eyes.
"Mi-chan…" He softly spoke. It was already very late and yet she was in the infirmary. She probably waited for Katsuki and fell asleep not too long after. She must've been incredibly tired after the match she had.
Mizuki stirred, the male paling and freezing up. Oh no. He woke her up. Izuku knew the consequences of anyone who even dared to wake Mizuki up from her sleep. He was as good as dead when her crimson orbs blinked open and all the colour drained from his face.
"Izu-kun?" Mizuki groggily asked as she lazily looked at him, the male sweating bullets. Her voice sounded much too innocent for someone who was about to murder him. Maybe he was destined to go without feeling any pain?
"Looks like I fell asleep, damn." Izuku blinked and stared at Mizuki with a blank expression. She clicked her tongue in irritancy and then looked at him. "How are you feeling?" She asked and he briefly turned white.
This was completely anti-climactic and unexpected. Was she still half asleep? She seemed to be fully aware and awake. Did it mean that she wasn't going to do anything to him? He let out a breath of relief. He was safe.
"Hey, I asked you a question."
He jumped at the dark tone and nodded vigorously. "Y-Yes! I'm great! I-It's all thanks to Recovery Girl! She was the one who healed me up!" He said and laughed nervously. Mizuki chuckled at his behaviour and grunted.
"I see. I'm glad you're feeling better. All Might didn't pull any of his punches, did he? Those were heavy hits," Mizuki spoke and Izuku's nervousness slowly faded away. He smiled in thought and nodded.
"Yeah, I can't believe that we managed to pass…" Izuku trailed off and recalled the last hit he gave the number one hero before he saved Katsuki. He clenched his fist at the memory, his facial expression becoming serious.
"Shut up, Deku," Katsuki's voice rang through the air, their eyes widening. He was scowling angrily as he sat up, Mizuki's entire body filling with waves of relief. He felt his arms, the expected pain nowhere to be felt. The old woman must've healed him up.
"It's about time you woke up, Explodo-kill! Geez, can you not worry your big sister for a little bit?" Mizuki teased the male, crimson orbs looking at his sister. She gave him a smirk but he looked right passed it all.
"You look like shit. What the hell happened to you?" He asked, his tone snappy with a tinge of concern. She was pale and he could see the exhaustion in her eyes. It looked like she hadn't slept in years.
A vein palpitated out of her head and she glared at him. "Those are the first words you tell me after you wake up, you ungrateful asshole?! Here I was, worrying about you and the first thing you say is that I look like shit! You wanna go?!" Mizuki yelled angrily at him, Izuku sweat dropping.
Katsuki huffed and looked away from his fuming sister. "I didn't ask you to wait for me. You could've gone home," he said and Mizuki's eye twitched. If she had the strength, she would've given him a solid punch but refrained from doing so.
"Are you going to tell me why you look like shit?" Katsuki asked, Mizuki's body briefly tensing at the question. He was quick to notice this, something nagging him at the back of his mind. He hit the bull's eye.
Mizuki let out a breath. "You know, constantly running away from factories and pipelines that wants to bury you is kind of exhausting, you know?" Mizuki told the male. No, he didn't know. After all, he didn't watch the match.
She wasn't angry at him in the least bit. Katsuki wanted to concentrate on his match against All Might and she didn't mind that fact at all. He sometimes wanted to cut himself off from everyone and everything before going out and kicking ass. She just didn't want him to always cut her out.
"Ah, that reminds me! Congratulations on passing, Mi-chan! You and Kirishima-kun worked great together!" Izuku complimented the girl happily, bouncing slightly after he climbed off the bed. He grinned widely and Mizuki felt a pang in her chest.
Not only did she look shitty but she also felt shitty too. She couldn't tell him. How the hell was she going to tell that glowing face of happiness that she failed? Not to mention Katsuki… She could her stomach churn at the thought.
Katsuki scoffed and rolled his eyes. "Next time you want to distract me with your stupid symptoms, do it right. You nearly had me wasting my time," Katsuki said and Mizuki's eyes widened.
She felt her mouth run dry and panic clutch her chest. No, he still thought it was her symptoms. He didn't know anything else. Not yet, anyway. What worried her was that he felt it. If he saw what happened, there would've been a lot of complications.
Mizuki calmed herself and then gave her brother a smug look. "You were worried about me, Little Brother?" She watched as the tips of his ears tinted and chuckled in amusement, only adding fuel to the fire.
"S-Shut up! I wasn't worried! Like hell I would care what happened to you!" He yelled at her and Mizuki rolled her eyes. He wasn't being honest with himself and his tinted ears were a clear giveaway of his embarrassment.
"I was worried about you too. Both of you." Her tone fell drastically and the two boys noticed the sombre facial expression that came over her. "You gave me grey hair from watching the match!" She weakly joked and pointed an accusing finger towards them one hand on her hip.
"Your constant bickering nearly cost you the practical exam and caused you to sustain unnecessary injures. You were up against the number one hero and didn't even think of anything beforehand," Mizuki said and frowned deeply.
Izuku's face flashed with guilt and he looked at the ground with a frown. He had Mizuki worry about him instead of showing her that he was capable. He tried to find a way to talk to Katsuki but it was only later that he barely bothered to listen.
Katsuki gritted his teeth as a shadow fell over his eyes. He could feel the surge of anger hit him as he remembered the match in full. What was worse, he recalled the frustration he felt when he lost to All Might.
"I'm glad that you two were able to get an advantage and pass but you were both reckless. You never talk about this broken relationship and you never try to mend it either. When will you learn that it will be better to build each other up instead of breaking each other down?" Mizuki asked.
She wasn't raising her voice and it wasn't her intention of starting a fight. She only wanted them to realize what was right in front of them. She knew broken pieces didn't fit back together but she knew that new pieces could be made.
"It has nothing to do with you, Mizuki," Katsuki said, a snap in his tone as he pushed himself off the bed. Izuku blinked in surprise while Mizuki's brows knitted together. "Whatever it is between me and Deku, it has nothing to do with you so stop meddling already."
Mizuki was dumbstruck at her brother's reply. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. She could feel irritation rush through her.
"Nothing to do with me? Excuse me, but if my brother and my best friend beat each other up and put their future of becoming the best heroes in danger, then it sure as hell has a lot to do with me!" Mizuki shouted at Katsuki, his own anger growing.
"I'm meddling because I want you two to at least try to understand each other! I'm not saying you should become best friends or have a brotherly bond. I just want this fighting to stop already!" Mizuki said and Katsuki clenched his fists.
Izuku had his own fists weakly clenched. The burden that Mizuki carried because of the two of them constantly fighting hung heavy on her. Unfortunately, it wasn't that easy though. It wasn't just one conversation and everything was alright. There was too much bad blood between them.
"Mi-chan-""Stop thinking you can make decisions as you please, Mizuki!" Katsuki yelled at his sister, his anger no longer being able to be held back. Izuku was cut off and shocked but Mizuki was far from standing down from her brother.
"It has nothing to do with you! Why are you always like this? Why do you always think you can make decisions for me? If you don't want it, then stop budding your nose into it! Like hell if I care how you feel! It's your own damn fault for always getting between everything!" Katsuki snapped.
Mizuki could feel the hits against her but her skin was hardened against his aggressive tone. She could feel his anger raging from within. It felt like endless waves that never wanted to stop overflowing.
"If you don't care about my feelings then at least care about your future as a hero, idiot!" Mizuki countered and Katsuki huffed. He let out a dry chuckle and Mizuki's brows knitted together at the emptiness of the sound.
"My future as a hero? That's precious coming from you! You didn't even want to become a hero!" He countered and Mizuki's eyes widened, Izuku dumbstruck at the words. Katsuki glared at his sister, a sneer on his lips.
"Did you forget already? How typical of you! You never wanted to even come to U.A. You wanted to go to that stupid designing school and run away without a care in the world! You want to preach to me about my future?" Katsuki laughed, Mizuki feeling the squeeze in her chest.
"The only reason you decided to go to U.A. is because you knew that you couldn't be on your own! You couldn't make up your mind about what the hell you wanted to be so you decided to hop on the next train and catch a lift to U.A.!" He told her and Mizuki frowned deeply.
"Katsuki, that's not fair."
This fight wasn't about the broken relationship between him and Izuku anymore. There was something more. Everything was starting to burst free and needed somewhere to be directed at or more so, someone.
"It's not fair? What do you know about fairness? Do you know what's unfair, Mizuki? It's unfair that I kept working myself to breaking point and back but everything was always handed to you on a silver platter!" Katsuki's hands trembled as he clenched them tightly.
He couldn't stop himself. He was too angry. Too upset.
"You always took the spotlight when your Quirk emerged and went through everything with ease but having everyone at your fingertips wasn't enough. You needed more! The more you needed, the more you did everything half-heartedly because there would always be someone to pick up after you!" Katsuki snarled, his aggression growing.
It wasn't true. Damn it. It wasn't true.
"Kacchan, that's not-""Shut up, Deku! You're the same! You're both the same! You were both a pebble in the road and always behind me. Now you want to suddenly run ahead? Don't give me that crap!" He glared at Mizuki, his scowl deepening.
"Ever since we came to U.A. you've been messing around. You don't care about being a hero. You never have been. Who the hell do you think you are to want to lecture me about throwing my future away? It has nothing to do with you! It's my choice!" Katsuki bit the inside of his cheek to try and stop himself.
Nothing he was saying was meant to come out. He didn't mean to throw everything in his sister's face. Yet, he couldn't stop. He was uncontrollably angry and frustrated. He bubbled it up from inside him for so long that it burst forth the moment he let his guard down.
Mizuki always worked hard and she was always keeping herself in check with her Quirk. She took in the feelings of others around her, something he could never and never wanted to do.
He knew the decision to come to U.A. was the most difficult thing for her to make. He was selfish and wanted to keep her by his side. She went along with him and decided to stay with him even after he dared to take away her chances of becoming a great designer.
Why? Why did she still stick with him? The more he pushed her, the more she pushed him back. Even if she was tired of dealing with him, she always came back to him. Why? Why did she keep trying?
He was hurt and he was scared. Mizuki knew that much through their connection. He needed an outlet. He needed her. He built up so many frustrations in time and it made her heart ache to think that she didn't know of them all.
She tried her best to be his support system but she failed along the way. She didn't know that he felt that way about her Quirk or any of her accomplishments. It was true that she struggled with her decisions but she knew she made the right choice. She knew that she was here for a reason.
Mizuki's hand twitched and reached out towards her brother. "Katsuki-""Don't touch me!" He slapped the hand away, the sound making Mizuki and Izuku's eyes widen. It wasn't a light slap. It was meant to hurt and keep away.
Izuku could practically feel a tear between the twins at that moment, Katsuki never fought like this with Mizuki. They never had such fights because they knew each other from the inside and out.
Katsuki envied Mizuki and his anger was only making everything worse. It was hard to believe that it wasn't the other way around. Wasn't he aware that Mizuki always chased after him? Wasn't he aware of how much she admired and loved him?
"I don't need your sympathy or your pity. I've had enough of it throughout my life! Stop looking down at me!" It's not that. "Stop trying to make decisions for me!" It's nothing like that. Katsuki had an internal battle as he raged.
Mizuki swallowed thickly, her hand stinging from where he hit it away. It was getting worse and she was starting to worry. "Katsuki, calm down. I don't know what made you think that I'll ever look down on you but it's not true. I'm sorry if I-""I don't want your apology!" He cut her off.
His body trembled as he gritted his teeth, almost chipping a tooth. Why was she apologizing? He was shouting at her! He was insulting her! Why wasn't she fighting back? Why was she only standing there and trying to calm him?
"I don't want anything from you!" Stop it. "You're so irritating and insufferable, always sticking against me." Stop. You don't mean any of this. "It's so frustrating that you're always in the damn way!" Katsuki then looked Mizuki straight in the eye.
"I wish you would disappear already!"
He watched as Mizuki's eyes widened at his words, lips parting as she silently gasped. There was a painful ache that exploded from his chest. He was overwhelmed with the sadness and despair that sprung lose from within him when he realized what happened.
The connection tore.
Mizuki felt the pain from her chest and the emptiness that filled her entire being at his words. He wanted her to disappear? He… He didn't need her? She was only an eyesore? W-Was that how he felt all this time?
Izuku looked at Katsuki in horror at what he said. Of all the things he ever did, this was by far the worst thing he could've ever done and he was well aware of it. Katsuki's eyes were wide at his own words, his anger vanishing from his eyes.
Tears sprung from Mizuki's eyes as everything crashed onto her. She could feel everything that she desperately held together break and the tears fell down the side of her face. The pain was excruciating and only worsening as she looked at her brother.
"Kacchan!" Izuku's shout caused Katsuki's body stir awake from the haze it was frozen in and he choked over his words. What did he…? Did he…? No, what did he just tell his sister? What the hell came out from his mouth? Mizuki let out a sobbing sound that made Katsuki's entire being become cold.
"Mi-chan!" Izuku yelled after the female as she stormed out of the infirmary room. "Mi-chan! Wait!" Izuku went to rush after her, the numbness in his back making it incredibly difficult to do so. He had to stop her from running away. It was a mistake. Katsuki's words were a mistake. It had to be.
"Leave her alone, Deku!" Katsuki told the male. Izuku's meddling would only make it worse. This was between him and Mizuki... He hurt her. He made her cry. He tore it. He tore everything apart because of one single statement.
Izuku stopped dead in his tracks, fists shaking by his side as he grinded his teeth together. Anger soared through his entire body, green sparks appearing all around him. He glared at Katsuki and let out a cry as he punched the male solidly in the face.
"What do you think you're doing?!" Izuku snapped at the ash blonde that staggered back and then fell onto the ground. Katsuki's eyes were hidden, in contrast with the nasty bruise that was starting to form on his cheek.
"Mi-chan has never, not even for one moment, looked down on you! She always cared about you! She admired you! She cared for you! How dare you… How dare you say that to her?!" Izuku yelled at Katsuki, the ash blonde not responding.
"What's going on in here? Why are you yelling? I can hear you all the way in the…" Recovery Girl found her words dying out in her throat as she stepped inside the infirmary. Katsuki on the ground and Izuku seething at him in anger, his fist trembling where he hit him.
Izuku growled when he didn't get a response from Katsuki and ran out of the infirmary, after his best friend. He didn't have anything to tell Katsuki. Nor did he want to say anything to him. He hurt Mizuki and he made her cry.
"What on earth happened here?" Recovery Girl asked the young teen, Mizuki missing and Izuku angry. She didn't expect to ever see the green haired boy that angry and she never expected Katsuki to look this broken as he replied.
"It's my fault."
She needed to get away.
She needed to get air. It was difficult to breathe, her lungs burning and her chest heaving as she ran. Her tears blurred her vision and continued to flow as she clutched her chest, the pain not stopping no matter how much she ran.
Could she run away from the pain? Could she run away from herself? Could she run away from the hurtful words that echoed inside of her? Could she run away from herself? Could she run away from everything that wanted to swallow her whole?
"I wish you would disappear already!"
She ran full force into something sturdy, a voice soon following. "Mizuki?" Shoto's voice reached her ears and her crimson orbs shot open. Shoto was surprised when he felt her run into him and even more so that he didn't look where he was going.
"Sorry, I didn't look where I was going," he said and his face then turned serious. He was relieved to still find her at school. He wanted to talk to her about what happened earlier and what was wrong with her. Now that she was alone, he would be able to-
His eyes widened in shock when she looked up at him with tear filled eyes, her cheeks stained and pain pulsing from the orbs. He felt his heart break in pieces at the expression she wore and choked on his words. Mizuki bit her bottom lip and roughly pushed him away from her before running off.
"W-wait!" Shoto called after the ash blonde as she ran off. His voice came out uncertain and only in a breath. What was that? Was Mizuki crying? Mizuki didn't cry. She didn't make faces like that. She got frustrated, irritated, angry, happy, arrogant but never had he saw her with such pure despair.
"Mi-chan! Mi-chan!" Izuku called after the girl that disappeared at the end of the hallway. Shoto's eyes shot towards the green haired male who hunched over, breathing heavy. Sweat trailed down the side of his face and his hands were on his knees.
"Midoriya? You're still here?" Shoto asked and Izuku's eyes widened at the male's presence. "What's going on? Why was Mizuki crying? Did something happen?" He was confused and disturbed by the expression he received from the girl.
Izuku gritted his teeth and clenched his fists. He wasn't going to be able to catch up to her, knowing that Mizuki was fleeing for her life and his stamina was limited after being healed. She was hurt, broken even, and he couldn't do anything about it. He couldn't even stop it.
"Mi-chan… She's… Kacchan…"
Izuku cursed and wanted to slam his fist into the ground. Shoto didn't get an explanation from the male and yet everything was falling into place inside his head. There was only one-way Mizuki would make such a face and the thought had him boiling.
Mizuki and Katsuki had a fight.
One that was much worse than punches.
