CHAPTER FOUR
(Chapter Title - It's Not About Me)
The following day, a little bit after lunch, Monica and her friends got into one of the two vans that would go into the town that was a couple hours' drive from the camp.
Monica ended up in a van with Ross, Rachel, Phoebe, Barney, Robin, Lily, Savanna and Ted.
"I assume the others are in the other van" Monica said, getting her phone out to play a few games. She put it away when she started feeling carsick.
"Yup" Savanna said.
The eight of them sang along to the radio, played countless games of I Spy and talked to each other.
"So, what song are you guys singing at karaoke?" Monica asked Ted.
"I know Marshall and I are singing The Confrontation from Les Miserables. I'm singing Javert's part and he's singing Valjean's" Ted said, "for our group number, we're still debating."
"What about Nothing Suits Me Like A Suit?" Barney suggested.
"No" Ted and Ross said in unison.
Ted looked at the girls, "what are you guys doing for karaoke?"
"We're doing Ex-Wives from SIX" Monica said, "Rachel is singing Catherine of Aragon's part, Lily is singing Anne Boleyn's part, Robin is singing Jane's part, I'm singing Anna of Cleves' part, Phoebe is singing Catherine Howard's part and Savanna is singing Katherine Parr's part."
"Nice!" Ted said.
Monica nodded and looked out the window at the rolling fields of upstate New York.
A couple hours later, the two vans pulled onto the road that would take them into the town.
The vans pulled into a parking lot of the only restaurant on the main street.
The town was small, consisting of a post office, restaurant, karaoke bar, a gas station, a small park, an ice cream parlor and a handful of stores, none of which looked open.
Everyone groaned as they got out of the vans, stretching their limbs and went to catch up with friends that had ridden in the other van.
Ruby whistled to get everyone's attention, "we'll have dinner at the restaurant, then whoever wants to can head to the karaoke bar for karaoke. After karaoke, there's Broadway trivia for anyone who wants to participate. Ian and I are here to drive whoever doesn't want to stay after dinner back to the camp. Let's have some fun!"
Everyone entered the restaurant and found tables to sit at.
Monica ended up at a table with Lily, Barney, Ted, Ross, Savanna and a boy named Aaron.
"Which cabin are you in?" Monica asked Aaron.
"I'm in the Book of Mormon cabin" Aaron said as a waitress came over to take everyone's drink and dinner orders.
Twenty-five minutes later, the wait staff came out with everyone's orders and drink refills.
Everyone chatted happily with each other and when they were done eating, paid their bills.
"Are you going to karaoke?" Monica asked Aaron.
Aaron nodded, "what about you?"
"Yup. My friends and I are singing Ex-Wives from SIX. I'm gonna sing On My Own from Les Miserables" Monica said, getting an idea, "I think all of us should do One Day More as our final song."
"That's such a great idea!" Aaron said as he and Monica, along with everyone else, entered the karaoke bar.
Monica, Rachel, Lily, Robin, Savanna and Phoebe took the stage first, each grabbing a handheld mic.
"Do you wanna know how we got this far?
Then welcome to the show, to the histo-remix
Switching up the flow as we add the prefix
Everybody knows that we used to be six wives
Get your hands up, get this party buzzing
You want a queen bee?
Well, there's half a dozen
Everybody knows that we used to be six wives
But now we're ex-wives
One, two, three, four, five, six" Monica and her friends sang, receiving a loud burst of applause and a standing ovation.
A different group of girls took to the stage as Monica and her friends headed to the table they claimed. Monica took a sip of her water as the girls preformed Cell Block Tango from Chicago.
After the group of girls left the stage, Barney took his turn singing I'm Too Sexy For My Shirt, which received a round of applause after he was done singing.
Once everyone took their turns, Ruby and Ian got on the stage and sang Love Is An Open Door from Frozen.
After Ruby and Ian took their turn, it was time to head back to the restaurant for theater trivia.
Ian took a handful of campers back to camp while Ruby stayed with the rest of the campers, which included Robin, Barney, Lily, Marshall, Ted, Aaron, Chandler, Savanna, Monica, Rachel, Ross, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe.
"I think the teams should be girls vs boys" Chandler said.
"I second that" Monica said.
"Could I be on the girls' team?" Ruby asked.
"Of course" Savanna said as she and the girls headed to a big table as the boys headed for another table.
The hostess of Broadway Trivia Night - a redheaded woman who introduced herself as Dawn - stood at a mic at a small stage towards the back of the restaurant.
"Good evening everyone and welcome to Broadway Theater Night here at Nadine's. I'm your hostess tonight - Dawn. For those of you who are playing, I'll need you guys to write down your team name on a piece of paper and come get your trivia set, along with a pencil. Make sure you write down how many people are on your team. I'll explain the rules once everyone is ready" Dawn said into the mic before sitting on a stool nearby.
On a table next to her was a mug full of pencils and a small stack of paper.
"I already have the perfect team name for us - Queen Bees" Monica said.
The others agreed in unison as Monica wrote the team name on a piece of paper, along with how many were on their team.
"What should our team name be?" Marshall asked.
"Jersey Boys?" Aaron suggested.
Everyone shook their heads.
"The Full Monty?" Barney suggested.
"I like that" Ted said, writing down their team name on a piece of paper as the others agreed.
Monica and Ted took their pieces of paper up to Dawn and grabbed a stack of paper, along with a pencil each.
Dawn smiled and looked at the pieces of paper on the small table - there were 6 teams competing that night.
"Looks like we have 6 teams tonight. When I call your team name, let out a cheer so I know where you guys are" Dawn said, "first up, we have Queen Bees"
Monica and her friends cheered loudly.
"Next up, The Full Monty, The Schuyler Sisters, Kings of New York, I Love Theater and What A Feeling. At the top of your trivia sheet, you should see a number. That number is for me to keep track of teams. There should be a sheet with the numbers one through ten on it. One is 'I don't know it' and ten is 'I know it'. You will write your answer on the piece of paper, along with your number on the top of your trivia sheet. The team who gets a perfect score will get a prize. We'll take a little break, then head into the second half of trivia. The answers start really easy, then get gradually harder. A few rules before we begin - number one is no phones. Turn them off now or put them on silent. Number two - everyone who isn't playing, do not shout out answers. Number three - I'll read each question twice and you'll have five minutes to answer before I move onto the next question. Number four - have fun!" Dawn said, giving each team time to tear the numbers into squares and put them on the table in front of them, "first question - what musical is the song Seasons of Love from? Again, what musical is the song Seasons of Love from?"
"RENT" Monica said quietly to her teammates.
"That's a 10" Rachel said, handing Monica the piece of paper with the number 10 on it.
Everyone agreed as Monica wrote down the answer and headed up to Dawn. She also made sure to write down the number of their team, which was 7. Marshall and some other people from other teams gave Dawn their pieces of paper before sitting back down.
"Okay, time's up" Dawn said, looking at each piece of paper, "the answer was RENT. And everyone got it right! Good job! Question number two, what musical is based on the September 11th attacks? Again, what musical is based on the September 11th attacks? Five minutes to get your answers in."
"Come From Away" Lily said, "and 9"
Monica nodded and wrote down the answer before heading up to Dawn just as Ted and some people from other teams gave her their pieces of paper before returning to their seats.
"Time's up" Dawn said, looking at each answer, "the answer was Come From Away. Congratulations to Queen Bees, The Schuyler Sisters, Kings of New York and What A Feeling for getting this one right. Sadly, Shrek and I don't know were not correct" she looked at the next question, "next question - in the musical Hamilton, which Schuyler Sister does Alexander Hamilton marry? Again, in the musical Hamilton, which Schuyler Sister does Alexander Hamilton marry? Five minutes."
"Angelica?" Savanna said, unsure.
"No, it's Eliza" Robin said, "let's do 8 this time."
Monica nodded and wrote down the answer before heading to Dawn, handing her the piece of paper and sat down, just as the other teams turned in their pieces of paper.
The Queen Bees ended up winning round one and now they were onto the final question of round two before the prize question.
"Define a Jukebox Musical. Again, define a Jukebox musical. Bonus points for anyone who can give four examples of a jukebox musical" Dawn said, adjusting herself on her stool.
"A jukebox musical is a stage musical or musical film in which a majority of the songs are well-known popular songs, rather than original music" Ruby said.
"I don't have that much room to write, so I'm just gonna summarize" Monica said, "we also need four examples of a jukebox musical."
"Mamma Mia, Jersey Boys, & Juliet and American Idiot" Lily said.
Monica nodded and wrote down those answers before turning in her piece of paper with the answers on it. As she headed back to her seat, she realized she was the only one who had answered the question - no one else was moving from their seats.
"Okay, time's up and looks like I only have one answer" Dawn said, "the correct definition of a jukebox musical is a stage or film in which the majority of the songs are well known or popular songs, rather than original music. The answers you could've given me - & Juliet, Mamma Mia, All Shook Up, Jersey Boys, American Idiot, Jagged Little Pill, Movin' Out or Motown, among many, many others. Congrats to Queen Bees for giving me not only the correct answer, but four wonderful examples.
Alright, ladies and gentleman, we've come down to the final question. Here are the scores, in first place with 70 points Queen Bees, in second place with 66 points The Schuyler Sisters, in third place with 58 points The Full Monty, in fourth place - we have a tie with 48 points I Love Theater and What A Feeling and in last place with 20 points Kings of New York.
This last question is actually a historical one - name all of King Henry the sixth's wives and in the order he married them. Again, name all of Henry sixth's wives and in the order he married them. You have twenty minutes for this one and you may use your phones" Dawn said.
"That's easy - we just sang about them - Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anna of Cleves, Katherine Howard and Catherine Parr. Isn't that the order he married them in or am I wrong?" Savanna asked.
Monica massaged her wrist as she listened.
"Their names are right, I'm just not sure about the order he married them in" Rachel said.
Lily pulled out her phone and began Google searching what she could about Henry the Sixth and his wives.
Exactly twenty minutes later, Dawn looked at the results and smiled.
"We have a winner - congratulations to the Queen Bees! In second place, The Full Monty. In third, we have a tie - Kings of New York and What A Feeling. In fourth place, I Love Theater. And in last place, The Schuyler Sisters. Thanks to everyone who played. Queen Bees, come and claim your prizes!"
Monica and the girls got up from their table, hugging each other as the audience and other teams applauded them.
Dawn indicated to their prizes - T-shirts in various colors with the restaurant's name on it, coffee mugs, glasses or 4 different stuffed animals - a moose, a raccoon, a squirrel or a beaver.
Monica ended up with a T-shirt, as did Lily and Savanna; Ruby ended up with a stuffed animal squirrel, along with Rachel, but she chose the moose; Robin and Phoebe chose stuffed animals as well - Robin went with the squirrel and Phoebe chose the raccoon.
The ride back to the camp was rather quiet - everyone either slept, listened to music on their cell phones, or looked out the window.
Lily was crammed in the back of the van with Marshall, Savanna, Aaron and Robin. She laid her head on Marshall's shoulder, feeling his arm around her shoulders.
Ruby pulled into the driveway of the camp and went to park the van next to the one Ian had driven back hours ago, "okay everyone, go straight to your cabins and get some sleep. You all deserve it."
The friends said 'good night' to everyone before heading to their cabins for some much deserved sleep.
