Chapter 1

Ok, here goes my first Sonic fic. It's a bit different from ones I've done before but, hopefully, that's not a bad thing.

Sir Shadow pushed the enemy knight off his sword before rushing through the next two seeking to block his path. "Dammit!" He snarled as blood sprayed across his face. Rouge failed to mention the number Emperor Scourge was sending.

After downing countless enemies and checking on his allies, Shadow finally reached the throne room. Three figures were already there. In the center of the room Queen Elisabeth knelt in a prayer position to uphold the shield around the room. King Albert looked up in alarm as he burst through the doors and sighed in relief. "Sir Shadow, you made it."

Shadow sheathed his sword and knelt. "Sorry to make you wait, Your Majesty. Emperor Scourge seems to aim to overwhelm us with numbers."

King Albert nodded solemnly, a slight gleam in his silver eyes. "And he will succeed by dawn. Sir Shadow, I have one final order for you."

The knight stood quickly. "I'll defeat him and his commanders before they can reach here. No matter what it takes."

The king shook his head. "No. Your final order is right here." He moved aside to show his daughter, Princess Amy shaking her head.

"Father no! You can't send me away. You and mother will be killed!" The girl protested as tears welled in her green eyes.

Sir Shadow was inclined to agree with the princess. But it was not his place to defy the king. He stood silently as King Albert touched his daughter and cast a sleep spell on her. The king cradled Amy and kissed her brow before relinquishing her to Shadow. "Go now! We don't have long left." As if to demonstrate, they heard the door shake as it was being attacked in an effort to break in.

The queen gave Amy's hand a gentle squeeze and looked up at Shadow. "Please, keep her safe. Her powers are very special."

The knight sighed as a secret escape passage opened. Her Highness will hate me for this. "I'll protect her with my life. I give you my word."

As the entrance closed, Shadow heard the door finally give way. The warrior raced down the dimly lit corridor, carrying the unconscious princess as carefully as he could. A chill raced down Shadow's spine as the sound of a terror filled scream reached him.

The sound caused the girl in his arms to stir. "Wh, What …?" Princess Amy put a hand to her spinning head. As she came fully awake, the girl began to struggle. "Sir Shadow, stop. We must go back!"

The knight didn't respond to her other than tightening his hold as he continued down the passageway. "..."

At the sound of a second scream, the princess began to flail wildly as she attempted to get loose. "Shadow, stop! Please, we must go back!"

Amy sighed in relief as he placed her on her feet. "I apologize, Your Highness. However, your parents made me promise to protect you. That includes from yourself." Pulling her toward him, Shadow punched her in the stomach hard enough to render the princess unconscious so he could carry her the rest of the way out.

Shadow didn't look back as he vanished into a dense forest that was offering the best hope for hiding from any pursuers. I must keep moving. We have to get as far away as possible.

The black hedgehog's ears perked as he heard the sounds of water. Following the noise, Shadow found himself at a large waterfall. "This place …." I remember. Someone told me about a cave hidden behind the falls.

Glancing down at the precious cargo he was entrusted with, the knight approached the possible sanctuary.
