Chapter 11
Rose looked around at the hanging silks and the pillows that were lit. She was attended to by three Chinese maiden. She turned when Sao Feng entered the room.
He stared in admiration at the young woman.
She was dressed in a traditional Chinese gown. The maidens made final adjustments to hehr gown.
"Young willow shoots. Touching, brushing, the water. Of the garden pool." He dismissed the three maidens. He offered her some wine in a goblet.
Rose bit the inside of her cheek as she looked up at Sao Feng. "I admit, this is not how I expected to be treated." She said as she took the goblet from him.
"No other treatment would be worthy of you ... Calypso."
She froze for a moment with the glass to her lips. She lowered it her brows slowly pinching together. "Excuse me?"
"Not the name you fancy, I imagine, out of the many that you have… but it is what we call you."
"We being who?"
"Whom."
"Who."
Sao Feng shrugged his shoulders as he looked at her. "We of the Brethren Court and our predecessors, who concealed you in this form. Your forgiveness. I lied. Who imprisoned you - oh. "Who." You were right."
"Goddess."
"You confirm it?"
"Confirm what? You've told me nothing." Rose said as she carefully put her glass down looking at him with weary eyes.
"The Brethren Court - not I, the first Brethren Court, who ... whom ... whose decision I would have opposed ... they bound you in human form, so that rule of the seas would belong to men, and not …"
"Me."
"But one such as you should never be anything less than what you are."
Rose let out a soft chuckle as she moved forward looking at Sao Feng through her lashes. "Pretty speech from a captor. But words whispered through prison bars lose their charm."
"Can I be blamed for my efforts? All men are drawn to the sea. Perilous though it may be."
"Some men offer desire as justification for their crimes." Rose said simply as she moved back slightly crossing her arms.
"I offer simply my desire." Sao Feng said moving towards her clasping his hands together.
"An item of such small value. And in return?" She questioned looking at him as he got closer to her.
"I would have your gifts, should you choose to give them."
"And if I choose not?"
"Then I will take your fury." He said leaning in kissing her.
Rose pushed him back her eyes blazing with anger. Her lips were only meant for one man and one man alone and that was James.
There was a muffled explosion and a loud crash coming through the room.
Rose ducked down as the cannon balls slam into the hull. She looked through a porthole to make out that the ship was under attack. She moved forward gasping in shock to see Sao Feeng with a long sharp piece of wood through his chest. She kneeled down next to him. "Sao Feng?"
"Here. Please." He said removing the rope knot pendant that he wore. "The Captain's Knot. Take it."
She hesitated for a moment.
"So you'll be free! Take it! I must pass it on to the next Brethren Lord."
"Me?" She gasped out looking at him with wide blue eyes.
"Go in my place to Shipwreck Cove."
She took the pendant with tears in her eyes. Granted he was probably one of the worst men that she dealt with he didn't deserve to die like this.
Tai Huang burst through the door. "Captain! The ship is taken! We cannot -" He stopped short to see what was happening. His captain mortally injured with Rose there above him holding the knot.
"Calypso …" He said softly to her before dying in her arms.
"What did he tell you?"
She held up the pendant that Sao Feng had put around her neck. She looked up with a slightly look of confusion. "He made me Captain." She was still surprised that he had willingly given her the pendant. But she knew that she had to make a chance and try to do right by Sao Feng even if he thought that she was Calypso. She wouldn't allow his death be in vain. She gripped it tightly in her hands as she got up to her feet.
