STAR WARS: DESTINY'S REDEMPTION

EXT. - ACH-TO ISLAND - DAY

Having reached the summit of the planet's main island, Rey sees a man standing by the edge of the cliff. He turns toward her, lowering his cloak. She notices that while his left hand appears natural, his right is mechanical. Removing the silver lightsaber from her pack, she holds it out to him...the mysterious Luke Skywalker. He stares at the object for a long moment, and then his eyes meet hers. Another long moment passes, and he speaks first.

LUKE

"Rey."

REY (confused)

"You know me?"

He nods, slowly. Raising his artificial hand, the saber flies from Rey's grasp, landing in Luke's own. He slowly caresses it with both hands for a moment, as if recalling old memories. Igniting the blade, he stares at its brilliant blue color. Rey can see there's a lot more to Luke than she'd ever imagined; his expression is one of great loss, but also a small degree of hope. Deactivating the saber, he now looks at her again, sighing softly.

LUKE

"I know you very well...or rather, who you used to be."

REY

"I don't understand."

LUKE

"You were born on a distant world, over twenty years ago. Your mother was brave and kind, much like my own. In fact, you were partly named for her...that is, your grandmother."

REY

"Which makes you..."

Luke nods, finishing the rest of her sentence...and giving her a new sense of purpose.

LUKE

"Once, long ago...I was your father. Your given name was Reyna Kenobi Amidala Skywalker. Your grandmother was a former Queen and Senator, from the planet of Naboo."

Hearing all of this is a shock to the young scavenger. Just days earlier, she was a nobody on the pathetic world of Jakku, living a meager life until a stubborn droid crossed her path. She walks slowly toward a nearby rock, and sits down. By her demeanor, Luke can tell she is clearly overwhelmed. Approaching her, he kneels by her side.

LUKE

"I am sorry, Reyna. It was I who insisted you be left on Jakku. Your mother would've done otherwise, but she met a tragic fate. I was not there to help her, and I knew I could not raise you alone. But rest assured, daughter...letting you go was the hardest choice I've made in my life."

REY

"So why not entrust me to your sister, the General?"

LUKE

"Leia was a great mother, but her own child showed signs of darkness at an early age. My attempt to train him failed horribly, and deeply broke her heart. I sought to free you from that kind of life, the best I knew how."

Rey can no longer hold it in, and begins to cry. Luke waits patiently, having expected this reaction. After a few moments, she settles long enough for one more question.

REY

"Were you ever going to bring me home?"

LUKE

"I wanted to, many times. But with the emergence of Snoke and the First Order, plus your cousin's betrayal...keeping you close was far too dangerous. Powerful as I am, I knew I could not shield you from all that evil by myself. So, I placed a mental barrier in your mind, keeping your location secret, and mine to only one. Your arrival here signals both an end, and a beginning."

He stands, and offers his left hand to help her up. Looking into her eyes, Luke speaks softly.

LUKE

"I don't seek your forgiveness, but I hope you will trust me. We will return to Leia, and the Resistance; they will need us both now."

Still teary-eyed, Rey accepts her father's hand. They journey toward the Falcon, and their destinies...
