"Woahh~" Issei whispered in awe as he & Kojiro entered the living room, looking around in awe at the numerous katanas sitting on wall mounts & stands all around the room.
"Pretty cool, right?" Kojiro spoke with a smug grin as he sat down on the rocking chair in the room, Issei nodding as he focused his vision & made out the aura of each sword.
Unlike the usual gold and/ or white that humans had, each sword's aura was a vibrant colour, each colour specific to the blade's hilt while the sheath was coated in light grey aura.
"They're awesome! How many are there?"
"26. One for each letter of the alphabet, though there are five more. This is one of them." Kojiro spoke while slightly lifting the katana at his side, Issei turning to look at him before his eyes widened as a wave of malicious energy slammed into him like a freight train.
"You felt it, didn't you?" Kojiro spoke with a knowing look as he saw the slightly nauseous look on Issei's face, the young boy nodding while he felt a slight hint of fear towards the malevolent katana next to his grandfather that was coated in a reddish-black energy.
"Dad, did you scare him? Issei sweetie, is everything okay?" Miki asked the moment they entered & saw Issei looking a bit queasy, Kojiro rolling his eyes as he saw Gorou looking at him.
"Don't get your panties in a twist, boy. I simply held the sword up and he got like that. Besides, I seem to recall you nearly throwing up when I showed the same sword to you the first time. Compared to that, the brat simply looking a bit squeamish is incredible in my opinion." Kojiro spoke bluntly with a shrug, to which Gorou simply rolled his eyes while Miki sighed as she picked Issei up.
"Are you okay now, sweetie?"
"I-I'm fine. It just…surprised me a bit."
"How about this? I have a few bokken out in the back so why don't you, me and your old man here have a few swings at each other?"
"Uh, I'm…I'm okay."
"Nonsense. It will be some Granfather-Father-Son bonding, eh Issei?"
"Can I?" Issei asked as he looked at his mother, who simply looked amused at her husband's pleading stare before he groaned & Issei cheered as she giggled & nodded.
"Why not? Mom & I will get ready with some drinks & snacks when you're done."
"That we will. Please, make sure I have my son-in-law still alive by the time you three are done."
"I will make no such promise." Kojiro spoke with a smirk as he stood up & began walking towards the backdoor, Issei blinking as his mom placed him down before looking at his dad as he watched the man slowly shuffling towards the door.
"Dad, why do you look like I do whenever I did something naughty?"
"Because the punishments you get are far more tolerable than the one I'm about to get."
"…Wait. Try again." Kojiro spoke with a frown and Issei nodded as he raised the bokken above his head before bringing it down, the old man watching the blade swinging through the air before shaking his head while Gorou winced as the bokken bounced back up & smacked the boy on his forehead.
"You good?" Gorou asked, smirking as Issei just gave a thumbs up while rubbing the red spot on his forehead.
"I'm good. Another try?" Issei asked Kojiro before blinking as the man snorted while shaking his head.
"No need. Truthfully, you have no skill in using a sword at all."
"Wait, what?"
"A bit harsh there, Kojiro." Gorou spoke with a frown and Kojiro sighed as he saw the slight tears forming in the corners of Issei's eyes.
"Look, I'm sorry for the blunt statement, but you needed to hear it. Sometimes you can't do the stuff that you want to because you're incapable of actually doing it. However, just because you're inept with a katana doesn't mean you aren't good with other stuff."
"O-Oh? Like what?"
"That…we need to figure out. What do you like hobby wise?"
"Uh…I like reading." Issei said with an unsure look, to which Kojiro simply gave him a deadpan stare before slowly turning to Gorou who shrugged.
"We've tried getting him outdoors, but he'd rather be in his bed with a manga or a book than be outside with the other kids."
"…You, go & see if the ladies need any help. Let me have some grandfather-grandson time here."
"Will my son be still in one piece when we see you two again?"
"Why would I hurt my own grandson?" Kojiro asked with a raised eyebrow, Gorou just giving him a doubtful look before shaking his head as he crouched next to a nervous Issei.
"Well, you heard the old man & your dad wants to live to see tomorrow, so I'll be leaving you two alone.
"R-Right, I promise Gramps will still be in one piece when we head back in."
"Ohohoho~ We'll see about that, brat." Kojiro spoke with a smirk, Gorou chuckling at Issei's comment as he patted his son on the head & nodded before standing up & walking back into the house.
"So…when I showed you the katana, why did you feel sick?" Kojiro asked after Gorou entered the house, to which Issei looked at his grandfather in confusion before seeing the knowing look on the man's face.
"You saw it, didn't you?"
"Saw what?"
"Reddish-black with hints of grey around the sheath? Ring a bell?"
"Wait, you can see the light too?" Issei asked in shock before blinking as Kojiro chuckled while shaking his head.
"Nit a way. For me, it tasted foul, like rotten socks stewed in vomit."
"Eurgghh…wait, how would you know what that tastes like?" Issei asked with a disgusted look before gagging as Kojiro simply smirked & shrugged.
"Don't ask. Now then, what is this light you spoke of?"
"I…don't know how it actually works. I just look at someone or something and I can see the light."
"And what does this light look like when you look at someone?" Kojiro asked as he sat down, to which Issei blinked before answering.
"Uh, it's kind of a bright yellow like the sun."
"And I'm guessing that the older someone gets, the dimmer the light gets, right?"
"Are you sure you can't see the light, Grandpa?" Issei asked, to which Kojiro chuckled as he shook his head while tapping his sheathed katana against his heel.
"No, it's more of a deductive guess. So, are there any people where this light is brighter than it should be?"
"Okay, so you can see the light. Also, yeah, with some people." Issei answered and Kojiro nodded before Issei's eyes widened as he watched his grandpa be surrounded in a calm yet potent white aura.
However, what surprised him even further was how much brighter his light had become, with it now shining nearly brighter than that of the few younger kids that he had seen running around in his school.
"Whoa~"
"So, is my light brighter now?"
"So much more. What is that? Can I do that too? Oh, can you teach me how?!"
"Hold up, kiddo. One question at a time." Kojiro stopped Issei with a raised hand before he could go even further, rolling his eyes as the boy did stop asking questions even though he couldn't stop himself from vibrating in excitement at what he was seeing.
"To answer your questions in order: this is Touki, you can't do it and I won't be teaching you how."
"Wait, what?! Why not~?" Issei whined and Kojiro rolled his eyes as he dispelled his Touki while leaning back into his chair.
"Because (A) I'm too old & lazy to be training anyone in the arts of martial arts & (B) you don't have the capabilities needed to learn it. The first requirement is being able to swing a sword without whacking yourself on the forehead."
"O-Oh…maybe you have something else to teach me?" Issei asked hopefully before grumbling in disappointment as Kojiro simply raised an eyebrow.
"Like what? I'm a guy that can use Touki & swing a sword. That's it."
"Come on~ You said you can smell the light stuff like I can. That means you know what this light stuff is, right?" Kojiro simply looked at his son before Issei's face lit up as his grandfather sighed while scratching the back of his head.
"Well firstly, the 'light stuff' is what you would call a person's aura, which also grows brighter & brighter as you get closer to your prime until it slowly begins to dim as you get closer & closer to death. Secondly, there is something, but I don't know if you would be able to pull it off."
"Oh come on, Gramps! If you know something, then tell me, please!" Issei pleaded and Kojiro smirked as he nodded and stood up with a groan before walking over to his grandson.
"Okay, then. The first step is on your knees." Issei was instantly kneeling on the grassy ground, surprising Kojiro at his swiftness before the old man shook his head as he used his sheathed katana like a cane.
"Legs closer like you're sitting in seiza but keep your back as straight as you can like you're sitting in kiza." Kojiro spoke as he slowly walked around Issei, who nodded as he slowly moved himself to sit better with his grandpa tapping a spot when he wanted it moved a bit.
"Perfect. Now, I don't know if this is even going to work but-!"
"Uh, Gramps?" Issei interrupted him, Kojiro sighing as he looked up from the ground & towards the sky in exasperation.
"I swear, you youngins' lack patience. Let me finish speaking. Hah…yes, Issei?" Kojiro asked as he turned back to his grandson only to blink at the sight of Issei clad in a crimson aura, Issei looking just as surprised and a bit nervous as his eyes had gone from a light golden brown to a deep emerald-green.
"W-What is happening?" Issei asked and Kojiro frowned as he saw the streaks of blond appearing & disappearing on Issei's hair.
"Issei, sit like you normally would." Kojiro ordered, waiting as his grandson quickly moved to sit on his behind with a slouched back and his legs straightened out in front of him.
Immediately, the crimson aura faded away while the flashing streaks of blond & the emerald-green sheen in his eyes faded away and turned back to normal, leaving Issei to let out a sigh of relief while Kojiro hummed as he tapped his katana against the ground.
"Now, go back into your previous position."
"W-What? I-Is it okay?" Issei asked nervously as he was a bit hesitant to do so, to which Kojiro smiled as he nodded.
"It is okay, but if you don't want to, we can stop now and-!"
"No! No, I…I want to keep going." Issei spoke with a nervous yet determined look, to which Kojiro simply gestured for him to do so as he went back and sat down in his chair.
As soon as Issei sat in his mixed position of seiza & kiza, the aura & emerald-green eyes instantly returned once more, but Kojiro frowned slightly as he saw the blonde becoming more prominent while still flashing in & out of existence.
'His chi is circulating, but there is something else clinging to it that are causing these changes.'
"Issei, do you feel any different?" Kojiro asked and Issei blinked as he looked around & moved his body around before slowly nodding.
"Y-Yeah, I feel like I have a bit more energy…and if I focus on my vision, I can see deeper into the lig-I mean, aura." He corrected himself and Kojiro blinked before frowning slightly.
"What do you mean by 'you can see deeper into the light'?"
"Well, I can see the light, but I can also see these small orbs floating inside of it."
"Oh? And what orbs are in me & how many?"
"A-A lot like a lot lot…and there's also fire in all the orbs & your light. It also sounds like they're…screaming?"
"Screaming?" Kojiro asked with a raised eyebrow, Issei frowning in concentration as he gave a slow nod.
"Y-Yeah, screaming. Like those 'Banshee' movies from America that Mom likes."
"Hmm, I see. Can you see your grandma's soul from here?" Kojiro asked and Issei looked to the side of the kitchen, the wall obscuring his vision for a moment before he looked right through it & saw a beautiful yet dull white light moving around.
Next to it was a light that shone just as beautiful and next to that light was a grey light that was a bit dimmer but still shining brightly.
"Uh, yeah? Kind of."
"The dimmest light would be your mother if I'm understand your ability correctly. What do you see inside of her?"
"Clouds…gold…and you." Issei answered and Kojiro shook his head in fondness.
"Of course. What about the many orbs? Do you see them in her too?"
"Uh…no. I don't see them in my mom & dad either."
'So the orbs are the souls of all those that I have killed…and the fire is self-explanatory if Otoki has clouds & gold inside of it. I guess I'm going to hell like I expected.' Kojiro thought with a wry smile as he stood up, shaking his head in amusement at his grandson still looking towards the house before Issei blinked as he felt a tap on his head.
"You can turn it off now."
"R-Right." Issei nodded as he deactivated his focused sight, his parents' & grandma's lights fading back to be behind the wall before the young boy groaned as he felt a slight headache.
"Urgh, that hurt my head."
"Well, you did strain your eyes so your head hurting is something to be expected. Now then, I think I've got something planned for you but that can wait until breakfast."
"Really?! Ye-!" Before Issei could finish his words, warning bells blared in Kojiro's head as he quickly reached under Issei's chin with the butt of his katana & turned his head towards the sky.
A split second later, both Hyoudou males looked in shock & awe respectively as a shock wave rippled from Issei's mouth and flew up to the sky, watching as it continued on for another few meters before slowly dimming away.
"…What?" Issei whispered as he slowly turned to his grandpa, who now had a serious look on his face as he palmed his face.
"Of course it isn't that easy."
"HOW COOL WAS THAT?!" Issei exclaimed and Kojiro was quick to point the boy's face to the sky once more, Issei watching in excitement as a rather big shockwave flew out & this one flew almost a dozen or so meters before it finally started to dim.
"Quiet voice, Issei, or else you might hurt someone." Kojiro spoke and Issei's eyes widened as he slapped his hands to his mouth.
However, that was the wrong thing to do as he slapped himself too hard & let out a high-pitched yelp, Kojiro unsheathing & slashing in front of him as he felt danger rushing towards him.
Sheathing his katana once more, the old man looked besides him at the jagged scars running down the ground on both sides of him before looking back at the wide-eyed Issei.
"S-Sorry." Issei whispered and Kojiro could see the tears already welling up in his grandson's eyes as he sighed & shook his head.
"It's okay and you can talk normally, but no shouting or whistling or any sort of high-volume from your mouth, okay?"
"Yes sir!" Issei saluted before Kojiro pushed his head down to face the ground, a shockwave impacting the ground and sending dust flying up into the air.
"Hehe, sorry." Issei apologized with a sheepish giggle and Kojiro just sighed as he let him go while looking up at the sky.
'This…was a very bad idea.'
"And there he goes again with his grandson. I think he was just lonely and missed having someone to just talk to about guy stuff." Otoki said with a soft smile as she watched her grandson & husband race up the stairs like madmen, to which Miki giggled while Gorou grumbled.
"I'm a guy. I could talk about guy stuff."
"Dear, the only guy stuff you like is katanas and the last time you tried to talk to Dad about that…well…"
"You got yourself into a hunting match against someone that used to hunt zoo animals for a living." Otoki finished her daughter's sentence with a smirk, rolling her eyes as Gorou winced while rubbing his back.
"R-Right, how could I forget about the arrow to the back?"
"Eh, it was blunt rubber ones so they didn't hurt that much."
"It felt as if someone took a sledgehammer to my back."
"…Yeah, Dad's crazy is kind of something most of the family is not used to, but at least we got Issei away from the manga. That has to count for something, right?"
"Hah, that is true. Now, we have someone else to bring him to if Irina & her parents go on a trip again." Gorou muttered and Miki nodded before glaring at her mother as she gave her a knowing smirk.
"Nice changing the subject." Otoki mouthed, hiding her giggles as Miki waved her away before she went to do the dishes and left the couple on their own.
Up in Kojiro's office, Issei was in awe as he looked at the numerous animal heads & ornaments displayed on the wall and the names under each one of the displays.
'Minotaur Jr., Naga, Siren, Oni-Wait, why does the Oni look like something someone would wear for cosplay? Pretty realistic too.' Issei thought & shook his head before blinking as he turned around to see his grandpa sitting behind his desk with an amused smirk.
"Hehe~ Sorry."
"Hahaha! It's of no concern. Now, why don't we sit and we can talk about your little 'sound' problem?" Issei's eyes widened as he remembered why they were here and nodded, sitting down swiftly as Kojiro cleared his throat and looked his grandson in the eye.
"Listen, I'm in the dark here just as much as you, but I think I've figured out a few things of your new ability. From the looks of it, it is based on your throat so the louder you speak, the higher the chances are of you making a shockwave."
"That is what we already know." Issei said with a nod and Kojiro nodded before continuing.
"Now, what I did figure out is that the intensity & length of your shout determines how the shockwave is going to be. For example, your first & second shouts were long shouts that weren't high in pitch and it created blunt shockwaves that pushed stuff out of their path. The fourth on the other hand was more sudden & swift unlike the first two that were drawn out, which resulted in a bullet-like shockwave that flew rapidly."
"And when I slapped myself, I made a loud yelp, which is a lot higher pitched & faster than the others and made a blade that cut the ground on both sides of you…right?" Issei asked hesitantly before smiling proudly as Kojiro chuckled & nodded.
"Precisely. If you give a long shout, it will create a blunt shockwave that pushes stuff out of the way. A short yet still relatively normal pitch shout will create a quick shockwave that will most likely pierce through something like a bullet. Finally, a sharp & high-pitched shout or yelp will create a sharp blade-like shockwave that cuts through things."
"…Awesome." Issei whispered to himself before blinking as Kojiro shook his head.
"No, it's not awesome when you don't have control over it. Let me ask you this. What's going to happen when your friend surprises you with a scare from behind and you give out a shrill shout in a group of people?" Kojiro asked before nodding as he saw the horror slowly settling in.
"Let me answer that. You'll kill everyone in front of you with a razor-sharp wind. Same with a loud shout to greet your friend when they're running towards you. You'll create a concussive shockwave that may turn them & everyone around you into a bloody smear."
"S-S-So, I-I can't shout anymore?" Issei asked while holding back tears and Kojiro sighed as he stood up and walked around to hug his grandson.
"It's okay. Like I said, it's not awesome unless you can control it."
"S-So, I have to c-control it?" Issei asked while sniffing to hold back tears, Kojiro grinning as he pulled back to look his teary-eyed grandson in the eyes & nod.
"Exactly. Everyone can be controlled and from the looks of it, the shouts only happen when you have that red aura around you so if you train to control that, you could learn to turn it on or off. Actually, let me test something." Kojiro spoke as he stood up, Issei letting go of his grandpa with a confused look as he watched him rummage through his drawers before being even more confused as the man took out a thick book.
"Now, give me a whistle aimed at the book."
"B-But what if I hit you?" Issei asked as he stood up and Kojiro simply smiled as he placed the book down on the cabinet besides him to make it face Issei and took a few steps back.
"Okay, how's that?"
"…A-Are you sure this is okay?"
"It's okay, Issei. Anything you can destroy in here can be replaced. Now, give it your best whistle." Kojiro said and Issei looked at the man before giving a shaky smile & nod as he looked at the book & took a deep breath.
Silence reigned in the office as time passed and Kojiro wasn't sure if his grandson was going to let out a whistle, but his worries were for naught as Issei let out a quick yet high-pitched whistle.
The old hunter watched as the air visibly warped before something impacted the book and both men watched as the top of the book slowly slid off while a jagged blade mark appeared in the wall behind it.
"Ha! See! You can control its direction already! You just need to learn to power it down and you'll be able to shout like normal again!"
"Really?" Issei asked, Kojiro's excitement infecting him too as the old man grinned & nodded.
"Haha! Yes! Now, what's say you and me go out in the back & practise your whistles, eh?"
"Yes sir!" Issei saluted before they both remembered the boy's ability, Issei giving a sheepish grin as Kojiro stood with his door hanging slightly off of its hinges.
"…Maybe we need to work on you knowing not to shout when needed."
"Kojiro! I swear you break something every week!"
A/N: And Issei's ability is revealed! Like I said, Fus-Ro-Dah!
Now, for those wondering if it's just shockwaves or if there's something else in stored for his voice…hehe~you'll have to wait & see.
When that will be…who knows?
