CHAPTER 12 - UNSPOKEN PROMISES AND POSSIBILITIES
The festive lights of Mistletoe Cay had dimmed, leaving Nathan and Elizabeth to make their way back to his truck, their steps slow, almost reluctant to end the night.
"So," Nathan chuckled, breaking the comfortable silence between them, "our families weren't exactly subtle, were they?"
Elizabeth laughed, a sound that felt like a balm to the quiet night. "No, they weren't.
Nathan shook his head, his smile rueful. "But," he paused, his tone softening, "I can't say I'm upset about it."
Elizabeth glanced at him, her expression a mix of amusement and something more tender. "Neither am I. It wasn't exactly a hardship, was it?"
"Not at all," Nathan agreed, his voice dropping to a more serious note. "Actually, I really enjoyed tonight. You're... easy to be with."
She smiled, her heart fluttering with an unexpected mix of joy and sorrow. "I did, too. It's just," she hesitated, her words betraying a hint of regret, "I'm heading back home in two weeks, so don't worry that I'm a threat to your singlehood."
Her statement hung in the air, a reminder of the temporary nature of their connection. Nathan felt a sudden, surprising disappointment. 'What if I want you to be?' he thought, the idea catching him off guard. But she was right. There wasn't anything they could do in such a short time except enjoy the time they did have.
The walk to the truck was filled with a new kind of silence; each lost in their thoughts, the easy camaraderie they had shared now tinged with unspoken longing. Once in the truck, the silence stretched between them, not awkwardly, but with the weight of unasked questions and unrealized desires. Nathan started the engine, the hum breaking the quiet but not the thoughts racing through their minds.
Elizabeth stared out the window, the landscape passing in a blur. She thought about how effortless it had felt with Nathan, how each accidental touch had sent a shiver through her, how the more she knew of him, the stronger her attraction grew. What if there was a reason to stay? she wondered, her heart whispering possibilities she dared not voice.
Nathan, for his part, was equally reflective. He had never experienced such a natural, easy friendship with another woman, one that felt like slipping into a comfortable old jacket. And the attraction was undeniable, a current running beneath their every interaction. He stole glances at her; each looks deepening his sense of connection and the unexpected wish for more time.
As they neared her place, Nathan finally broke the silence, his voice tentative. "Elizabeth, I've never... I mean, I don't usually..."
She turned to him, her eyes searching his, a spark of hope flickering within her. "What, Nathan?"
He took a breath, the words coming out in a rush, "I've never felt this easy, this right with someone so quickly. And I'm not ready for this to... end."
Elizabeth felt her heart skip, her feelings mirroring his. "I know what you mean," she admitted, her voice a whisper. "It's like finding something you didn't know you were looking for."
Their eyes met, holding a conversation of their own, filled with possibilities, fears, and a burgeoning desire for something more than just this moment.
"I enjoyed tonight, Elizabeth," Nathan said, his voice thick with emotion. "Could we... could we do this again? Just the two of us, maybe coffee tomorrow? I'd say dinner, but I start a new shift tomorrow at 3 until Monday, and I don't want to wait that long."
Elizabeth's heart fluttered the invitation, a beacon of hope in the looming goodbye. "I'd like that," she replied, her voice soft, her eyes locked with his. "I'd really like that."
The air between them was thick with anticipation, the romantic tension palpable. Nathan's gaze dropped to her lips, the desire to kiss her overwhelming. But at the last moment, he lifted her hand, which he had been holding, and pressed his lips to it instead. It was a chivalrous and profoundly personal gesture.
Elizabeth's breath caught, the kiss on her hand igniting a fire within her, her heart racing with the intensity of his touch. "Goodnight, Nathan," she managed, her voice a longing whisper.
"Goodnight, Elizabeth," he replied, stepping back reluctantly, the space between them now a chasm of what-ifs. As he moved to turn toward his truck, he stopped and turned back to Elizabeth, asking for her phone.
She handed it over, confusion on her face. He quickly added his phone number, grinning as he did so. After sending himself a text, he returned it to her, still open to his entry.
Elizabeth looked at it and giggled because he put Captain Fire Hazard as his name. Then, with a wink, he headed for his truck.
As he walked to his truck, Nathan couldn't shake the feeling that this was the beginning of something significant, something worth holding onto, even from afar. Watching from her door, Elizabeth felt a similar pull, her hand still tingling from his kiss, her mind and heart already planning the next time they would meet.
The night ended not with a kiss but with an unspoken yet deeply felt promise, a connection neither distance nor time could easily sever.
Elizabeth stood on the porch until Nathan's taillights disappeared in the distance. She could still feel his lips on her hand and wondered how his lips would feel on hers. She giggled at her phone as she looked down at his contact info again.
Elizabeth chuckled at the nickname Rosemary had coined for Nathan—Captain Fire Hazard; she mused, the nickname both amusing and oddly fitting. Even now, she could easily recall his photo on the calendar and felt herself getting warm. With a sigh, she entered the house, wondering if his sister would let her wait until tomorrow to begin her interrogation.
Upon entering, she saw Scott in the living room watching something on TV. Though he looked at her, he did not comment, leaving it up to her to decide whether she wanted to discuss her time with Nathan. It was one of the blessings of a friendship as deep as theirs was.
"Grabbing two bottles of water from the fridge, she headed for the living room. Taking a seat next to him, she handed him a bottle. "Where's Julie?"
"She's already out like a light," Scott replied, taking the water. "But be ready for her to grill you about Nathan in the morning."
Elizabeth nodded, taking a sip to hide her smile. "I figured as much. I was surprised she wasn't here waiting with you."
After a few minutes of companionable silence, Scott turned to her, noting her thoughtful expression. "So, how did it go with Nathan?"
She looked at him, knowing he was her safe harbor before the storm of family curiosity. "It was... unexpected," she began, then shared about the evening, the tram ride, their conversations, and the undeniable connection. How Nathan looked at her and kissed her hand felt like something out of a storybook. Then, Elizabeth showed him how Nathan entered his contact information.
"So," Scott started, his tone light but probing, "sounds like you two hit it off, huh?"
Elizabeth took a moment, her gaze distant. "Yeah, we did. It was... effortless, you know? Like I've known him forever, yet there's this buzz of excitement every time we talk. We are going for our coffee date in the morning."
Scott nodded, understanding. "He's a good guy. But you're leaving soon, right? How do you feel about that?"
She sighed, her internal conflict bubbling to the surface. "That's the part that's tearing me up inside. I mean, I'm supposed to go back to Boston, to my life, my job. But the thought of leaving now, after tonight... it feels like I'm walking away from something real."
He watched her, his expression softening. "You think you could do long-distance?"
Elizabeth shrugged, a mix of hope and doubt in her eyes. "I've never been one for relationships over distance, but with Nathan... maybe. Something about him makes me think it might be worth trying."
Scott raised an eyebrow. "You sound pretty smitten."
She chuckled, her cheeks warming. "I guess I am. But it's not just about being smitten. It's about feeling like I've found someone who gets me and can be myself. That's rare."
"Yeah, it is," Scott agreed. "And Nathan, he's not one to rush into things. If he's into you, that says something." Why not just enjoy whatever time you have and see what happens."
Elizabeth played with the label on her bottle, her thoughts a whirlwind. "I want to, Scott. I really do. But then there's this part of me that's terrified. Terrified of getting attached and then having to leave."
He leaned back, considering her words. "You've always been the brave one, Liz. Moving here, chasing your dreams. Maybe this is another dream to chase, just in a different way."
She gave him a small, grateful smile. "Thanks, Scott. I just... I don't want to let go of what we've started, but I also don't want to live with 'what ifs.'"
"You could always come back," Scott suggested, his tone hopeful. "Or he could visit you. It doesn't have to be an end."
Elizabeth nodded; the idea was appealing yet daunting. "I might have to think about that. And how I explain this to Rosie without her planning our wedding."
Scott laughed, "Yeah, good luck with that. But seriously, Liz, if you both feel something this strong, maybe it's worth exploring, no matter the distance."
She looked at him, her brother, always the voice of reason with a touch of whimsy. "You think so?"
"I do," he said with a nod. "Life's too short for 'what ifs.'"
Elizabeth felt a weight lift slightly at his words, her heart still heavy with the impending goodbye but now lightened by the possibility of a future, however uncertain. "Thanks, Scott. For listening, for... for everything."
"Always," he replied, clinking his bottle against hers. "Now, let's watch this movie. You need to take your mind off things for a bit, even if it's just for tonight."
She nodded, settling in, her mind still on Nathan but comforted by the support of family, ready to face whatever came next with a bit more clarity and hope.
She smiled, the warmth of family enveloping her. "I'm so glad I have you as my bestest friend and brother. How did Julie and I get so lucky?"
"I don't know," Scott teased. Elizabeth giggled and hit him with a pillow.
They turned back to the movie, but Elizabeth's real focus was on the future, on possibilities, on the heart's whispers that sometimes, just sometimes, led to the most unexpected but fulfilling places.
Back at his place, Nathan sat on the edge of his bed, the events of the evening replaying in his mind like a favorite movie. He had enjoyed every moment with Elizabeth, her laughter, her wit, the way her eyes lit up with the Christmas lights. There was an ease with her that he hadn't felt with anyone else. He thought about her leaving in two weeks, and a part of him felt the weight of that ticking clock. 'What if I don't want this to end?' he pondered, the idea of a long-distance relationship both daunting and exhilarating.
He smiled to himself, recalling the touch of her hand, the gentle pressure of her fingers in his. It was like holding a promise, a connection not easily broken. His thoughts drifted to the kiss on her hand, a moment of restraint that still felt intimate, charged with what might have been. As he got ready for bed, he felt a sense of anticipation for their date in the morning. With that thought, he realized he hadn't set the time to pick her up. Reaching for his phone, he saw he had missed a call from Colleen. No doubt she wanted to get all the details about his time with Elizabeth. For now, he decided against returning the call, wanting to savor his time with Elizabeth in private for a bit longer.
Faced with the dilemma of reaching out to Elizabeth, Nathan paced his quiet room, filled with a blend of anticipation and uncertainty. The soft glow of his phone illuminated his face as he weighed the options. After a moment of contemplation, he decided that a text would be just the right touch. He picked up his phone, his fingers trembling slightly as he typed out his message with a mix of eagerness and anxiety.
Captain Fire Hazard: Are you still up?
Almost immediately, the screen flickered to life with her response, igniting a rush of warmth in his chest.
Elizabeth: I am. Miss me already? Smiling face emoji
A smile broke across Nathan's face, lighting it with genuine delight. Her cheeky tone filled him with a sense of joy and possibility. He quickly composed his next message, energy coursing through him as he revealed his intentions.
Captain Fire Hazard: As a matter of fact…Yes. But I also realized we never set a time for our first date.
Nathan watched the dots move for what seemed like an eternity and held his breath. Finally, the dots disappeared, and a now familiar thrill rushed through him as her response appeared.
Elizabeth: "Is this date?"
His heart soared as he could almost hear the teasing lilt in her voice. Without hesitating, he responded, his confidence swelling.
Captain Fire Hazard: I'd like it to be.
The seconds seemed to stretch indefinitely as he waited for her to reply, his mind racing with all the possibilities this date could unfold. Then, just as suddenly as before, her message flashed across his screen, bringing a flood of relief and excitement.
Elizabeth: "Me too. (Winky face emoji)
Nathan felt his heart race as excitement filled him, making him more confident, even bolder, as he decided to up the ante.
Captain Fire Hazard: Would you like to have breakfast with your coffee? I know the perfect place with the best food in town. Maybe we can go for a walk on the beach afterward?
He imagined the sun rising over the waves, the salty breeze whipping through their hair as they strolled along the shore, basking in each other's company. She responded quickly, and he could picture her smiling as she typed.
Elizabeth: I'd love that, but No, Mr. Fluffy's, right?
Nathan grinned as he recalled her encounter with the native spider.
Captain Fire Hazard: No, Mr. Fluffy's, I promise. He doesn't really care for the beach.
With a playful twist to the conversation, she responded with a hint of mischief with her rather cheeky message, bringing a smile to his face.
Elizabeth: What about fire extinguishers? You are a walking fire hazard? ( winky face, fire emoji.)
Nathan couldn't help but laugh, feeling the thrill of their flirtatious banter spark even further.
Captain Fire Hazard: "I am a Fiery, remember? Of course, I will always have access to fire extinguishers. I even keep one in my truck for fires I want to put out. (Fire, heart, and winky face emojis.)
For a moment, he paused and looked down at his message, reflecting on his boldness. This was different for him—usually reserved in his flirtations, he found himself uncharacteristically confident around Elizabeth. Maybe it was because she would be leaving soon, and it felt like they were racing against time that gave him the courage to put his cards on the table. Gathering his thoughts, he took a deep breath, ready to take a leap of faith and push the boundaries of their interaction. He pressed send, hoping his eagerness wouldn't scare her off.
Moments later, the familiar notification sound rang through the stillness of his room, igniting a rush of triumph in him as he saw her response.
Elizabeth: I'll be waiting. What time should I be ready? Do I need anything?
Nathan's heart danced with excitement. He quickly typed back, relishing the thought of their morning together.
Captain Fire Hazard: Can you be ready at 8:30 am? Bring your thong for later.
As soon as he sent the message, he felt a surge of confidence—until his screen lit up with her shocked reply.
Elizabeth: ? EXCUSE ME! Why would I bring a thong? (Angry face emoji)
His heart dropped, and confusion washed over him as he reread his message, suddenly realizing the blunder he had made. A wave of embarrassment swept over him as he galloped through the layers of misunderstanding. With a quickening pulse, he scrambled to correct it. No wonder she was upset by it. Even though they had progressed quickly to flirting through messages, he knew that didn't mean other things would move as fast. By nature, he was a slow and steady guy.
Captain Fire Hazard: "OH NO! I'm sorry I left off the s. I meant thongs, as in what you Yanks call flip flops."
There was a brief pause before her response came through, and he could sense the shift in her tone—a lightness that eased the tension.
Elizabeth: "Of course. I totally forgot that thongs have a different meaning here. How embarrassing. I apologize for jumping to conclusions. I haven't been around you long, but I know enough that you wouldn't go there. Unfortunately, it wouldn't be unusual for a guy to have that type of expectation in America. Although Rob Casanova seems like the type. (Embarrassed face, face palm emojis)
Captain Fire Hazard: Rob Casanova? Should I be concerned I have competition?
Intrigued, Nathan felt a flicker of jealousy bubble up at the mention of this Rob.
Elizabeth: The first Aussie I technically met on the plane. He was my seatmate on the flight from LAX. Remind me tomorrow, and I'll fill you in. Definitely NOT COMPETITION
A smile crept across Nathan's face, feeling relief at her reassurance.
Captain Fire Hazard: Deal! I can't wait to see you tomorrow.
Elizabeth: Me Neither.
With a heart full of hope and anticipation, he typed one last message for the night.
Captain Fire Hazard: Sweet Dreams, Elizabeth
Elizabeth: Same to you, Captain. (Heart emoji)
As he put his phone down, Nathan's mind buzzed with excitement and longing for the day ahead. The thought of their first date filled him with a giddy sense of adventure and possibility. Smiling, Nathan got up from the bed and went to the kitchen, having already formed his plan. After checking that he had all he would need, he returned to his room and set his alarm. Before putting his phone down, he sent a quick message to Colleen, saying that he was picking Elizabeth up for breakfast and would talk with her later in the afternoon. He knew that if he didn't give her something, she would either show up at his house in the morning or blow up his phone until he answered. Then he just copied it and sent it to his mother as well. He wasn't taking any chances of their first date being disturbed by eager, nosy matchmaking sisters or mothers.
