A week and a half later after the phone call with Renae, the paternity test results came back. Adam was the father of Londyn Evans. Adam sat on his couch in his apartment, holding the piece of paper that is going to change his life. He hasn't talked to Renae yet, she has been calling him, but he's been ignoring her. Not to be rude or anything, he just thinks he is not ready to take this further step in his life.

An hour later after sulking on the couch, Renae called Adam again, and he finally answered her call.

"Adam it's so nice to hear from you, I was getting worried, I have got the test results right here in front of me, How are you feeling", she asks him nicely.

"I'm okay, I guess….I don't know how I feel at the moment. Confused, scared. Never thought me starting a family would end up like this" he says sighing.

Renae smiles warmly, she can feel his nerves over the phone. "I know that it can be a lot to take in right now if you would like, you can come and talk to me here in Detroit. We can set up a time to meet with one another, talk about Londyn, and her file, and go on from there how does that sound? She asks him.

Adam takes a deep breath, "yeah that sounds good, I think it will be better to talk in person" he tells her. They both make a time and place to meet over in Detroit, now Adam has to think about what he's going to tell his boss. He doesn't think he is ready to tell the unit the big news.

Adam goes to work the next day, with butterflies in his stomach, it seems like time is going fast, to meet up with Renae. He knocks on the door of his boss Hank Voight and walks in when he gives him the okay.

"What can I do for you Ruzek?" he asks him gruffly. Adam runs his hand over his mouth, he debates on whether he should sit down or not, but he decides to remain standing.

"Umm, boss I'm going to need some time off this week, I need to head to Detroit, to talk with someone," he says as calmly as he possibly can.

Hank shrugs, "You are going to have to give me a little bit more information than that kid," his boss says.

Adam tilts his head down. He's debating on if he should tell him the full story. "It's a personal family matter, they need me there for something, I think it's best If I should keep it private," he says putting his hands in his pocket. I mean it technically wasn't a lie, it was a personal family matter.

Voight stares at Adam, he can tell that Adam isn't telling the whole truth, but if it was private information for him, he would respect his privacy. Voight tells him that it's okay, and will give him some days off. Adam thanks him and goes to his desk. Voight follows him out of his office.

"Alright, everyone listen up, Adam is going to be out for a while, so Burgess you will partner up with me starting tomorrow. Before Kim could ask any questions about the sudden change of partners, Voight's phone rang. "Alright, everyone let's head out, we got a case. A body over on Highland Street" he says, Everyone gets up, grabbing their jackets on the way out.

The unit heads back to the station to talk about the evidence that they have found at the scene. In the truck sat Kim and Adam. It was a quiet ride. Usually, they make small talk or talk about the current case, but neither one of them said a word. Kim decided to speak up.

"Is everything okay, why do you need to take some time off?" she asks him. Adam turns to look at her.

"Just something, with family, nothing serious. I'm good" he reassures her. Kim nods her head.

"Makayla's been asking about you, she's been wondering when you're going to come over," she tells him. Adam has missed Makayla. Sometimes he would pick her up from school when Kim was busy at the station.

"Tell her I miss her, and I will see her soon," Adam says. Kim smiles indicating that she will tell her. They pull up to the station and head inside to go over the case.

After his work day was over Adam headed back to his apartment. It was filled with awkward conversations between his coworkers asking about why he was taking time off and Adam just gave them all the same answer. That was a family matter. He is starting to think, that his unit is not believing him, but it's not their place to know his business outside of work.

Later in the week, Adam is seated in a coffee shop in Detroit, waiting for Renae to meet him. His nerves were eating him up inside. He wasn't sure he was ready for this. Adam spotted a young woman enter the coffee shop, looking around, he assumed it was Renae. He stands up and calls her name. She walks over to him with a smile.

"Adam it's so nice to finally meet you in person," she says shaking his head. She takes a seat and orders herself a coffee.

"So how have you been after the phone call," she asks him. Adam takes a sip of his coffee.

"I have been a bit nervous, I mean I have always wanted kids, but I thought that I would be married first, you know. I mean there's nothing wrong with having kids when you aren't married, but for me, I wanted to settle down, with someone then start a family" he tells her.

Renae nods in understanding. "Life can throw obstacles at us. I want to make you feel as comfortable as you can, I don't want to force you into anything," she tells him. Adam tells her that he is okay to hear more about Londyn and her life up to now, he reassures her that he feels he is in the right mindset to take in the information that she is going to give him.

Renae pulls out Londyn's file and opens it. She takes out a picture and slides it across the table to Adam. Adam picks up the photo. He stares back out at a young girl, with light brown skin, and brown brown curly hair. She's not smiling in the photo, just a blank stare into the camera, this image kind of saddened Adam a little.

"This picture was taken last month. She didn't want to smile in the picture, she was just recently taken out of a home where the foster parents neglected her and the other children and the foster parents were doing drugs in the house" she tells him. Adam looks up at her with a sad look in his eyes, what else has this little girl been through?

"Were there any good foster homes that she was in?" Adam asks her, setting the picture down on the table.

Renae sighs, "Not many. In most homes that she was in, the foster parents would neglect the kids, abuse them, or use the money that they were supposed to use for the kids to buy food and clothes, instead, they used it for drugs" she tells him. Adam plays with his coffee cup. If Ashley had just told him that she was pregnant, maybe this all could have been avoided. Londyn would not have to be in these homes with these terrible people.

Adam and Renae talked some more about Londyn and the abuse she endured, and then Renae had a big question to ask him.

"So, after hearing her story, are you willing to take custody of Londyn? I'm not forcing you to, but I do feel that it's in her best interest for her. The department ran background checks on you, you have a steady job and income, and overall you seem like a good guy" she tells him.

Adam folded his hands in front of him, he knew that this was taking a big step in his life. His life was going to change. Maybe for the better, but he feels like he is ready for this, especially hearing about the abuse Londyn has suffered. He feels that he owes this to her.

Adam takes a deep breath, "I'll do it. I will take custody of her" he tells her.

Renae smiles excited to hear the good news, "I'm glad to hear that, but I want to warn you. This isn't going to be easy. Most foster kids don't get the proper care in the system, especially for their mental health. She may need therapy, and she may have nightmares at times, but I want to assure you that you are not alone. I am here to help if you need anything" she tells him. Adam thanks her. Renae decides it will be best if Adam meets Londyn today, She knows that it's soon, but she thinks the sooner the better.

"Does she know about me?" Adam asked her. Renae nods her head.

"She knows your name, and what you do for work, but I didn't tell her much. I didn't want to overwhelm her" She tells him. Renae gives him time for him to come into the Children and Family Services office to meet Londyn. It's now or never he thought to himself.
