A couple of hours later, Adam found himself standing outside of the Children and Family Services office. He was pacing, time was getting closer and closer until he had a child living with him. His child.

He finally gets the courage to walk through the doors and tells the front desk lady that he is here for Renae Evans, she guides him to a waiting room and tells him that Renae will be with him soon.

As he sat in the waiting room, he looked at the other citizens seated in the waiting room with him. He wonders what they are here for. Are any of them in the same situation he is right now, probably not he thought to himself.

Renae came into the waiting room and led Adam outside a room. They both looked inside and Adam could see a young girl, seated at a table coloring. That was his daughter.

"Are you ready for this, do you need a moment before you go in?" she asks him.

"No, I'm good" Adam was ready for this.

Ok, come on in" she says. They both walk into the room and Londyn didn't look up when they both walked into the room. She could feel both their presence but she was too nervous to look at her father. Adam walked closer to her, and he could tell that she was nervous, by the way, her shoulders tensed up.

Adam approaches her timidly, not wanting to make her any more nervous. "Hello Londyn", she said.

Londyn stopped coloring, "Hello," she said quietly. Still not looking up at him.

"May I sit?"

She nodded and continued coloring. Adam sat down at the table with her, folding his hands in his lap. "What are you drawing?"

"Me and my foster sibling playing at the park" she replied. She slid the paper over to him so he can take a look, and she finally looked at him. Adam picked up the paper and looked at it.

"It's nice", he said smiling. She returned the smile. Maybe this won't be as bad as he thought.

"Thank you" she replied politely. She looked at Adam studying him. Londyn has seen a picture of him, but someone's appearance can be different in real life. He wondered what she was thinking.

Londyn got out another blank piece of paper and started to color another picture. "Do you have any questions for him, sweetie?" Renae asked her. She knows that Londyn has many questions for him, when Renae first told her about her father, Londyn asked her a million questions, but with him seated right in front of her, it was hard to remember all the questions she had.

"You can ask me whatever you want," Adam told her.

"Do you like living in Chicago?" she asked him. If Adam liked it, Londyn wondered if she would like it too. Since living in Detroit, she knows that it's not the best place to live. She wonders if Chicago is safer.

Adam nods, "Yeah I like it. I've been living there my whole life. I think you will like it too." he tells her.

There were a million questions that Adam wanted to ask her, but he decided to wait for that and leave the questions up to her.

"Were you happy when you found out about me," she asked looking up at him with curious eyes.

The question caught Adam off guard. He wasn't expecting a question like that. "Yeah, I was happy. I was nervous though and shocked, but it was a good shock, I'm happy to finally meet you," he tells her with a warm smile.

Londyn grew a little more confident since talking with Adam. She didn't seem angry or upset which calmed Adam's nerves.

Adam looked down at her picture. "Is a dog your favorite animal," he asks her. She nods her head. "Mine too," he tells her. That's one thing they have in common.

"Do you have a dog? My old foster home had a dog, but he barked all the time."

"No, I don't have a dog, but I do work with dogs at my job," he tells her.

They talked some more, and Adam watched her. Taking in her features, and the way she colors and draws in detail. Adam felt warm inside. He thinks this is the happiest he has ever been.

It was time for Adam to leave. It felt like time went by quickly. Londyn cleaned up her coloring things and put them back on the shelf and put on her jacket.

"Goodbye Londyn," Adam said. "I'll see you soon," he tells her. He wasn't ready to leave her, but he knows that he will be seeing her again.

"Bye," she said. Before she left the room, Londyn handed him the drawing of a dog playing at the park. Adam gently took it from her hands. "Thank you", he says softly. Londyn gives him a small smile and leaves the room.

Adam was back in Chicago and was currently standing in the extra bedroom in his apartment. It's going to be Londyn's new bedroom. He ran some errands today, picking up paint, furniture, and room decorations for her new bedroom. He was going to ask one of his co-workers for help, but he wasn't ready to tell them about his daughter. So he decided to do all the decorating on his own. He looked up pictures on Google, to give him some ideas on how to decorate the room. Adam knows that her favorite colors are pink and light blue, so he decided to paint the whole room pink and got some light blue bedding.

Hours went by, and Adam was finally finished. He looked around the room and thought that he had done a decent job. I mean he has never decorated a kid's room before so he did his best. He closed the bedroom door and was ready to begin this new chapter in his life.

It was finally time for Londyn to come to Chicago. Adam didn't feel as nervous before but still had some jitters. He picked up groceries and toiletry items. He was ready for Londyn's arrival.

Time moved on and it was now evening time then there was a knock on the door. His daughter was here. Adam took a deep breath and moved towards the door and opened it.

"Renae, it's nice to see you again," he said. Beside her, stood Londyn looking more nervous than when he saw her before. Adam looked down at her. "Hi Londyn," he said, smiling warmly.

Londyn smiled back shyly, but she didn't speak. "It's nice to see you again also," Renae said, breaking the silence. She led Londyn inside gently and grabbed her small duffel bag. Adam closed the door behind them.

"She's got a few things with her from Detroit. She didn't have much" Renae said. Adam took note of the duffel bag that Renae was holding. Is that all she had? He thought to himself. "Here are some important documents that you will need, including her birth certificate, medical records, school records, those kinds of things." she took out a brown envelope from her bag. She handed it to Adam and he took it. "We're here to help and support you if you need anything, okay? We want to make you both feel as comfortable as possible."

"Thank you, would you like something to drink?" Adam asked.

"No thank you" she politely declined. "I think I should entrust you." She turned towards Londyn who was still standing by the door. Her eyes wandered around the apartment. "Londyn, I'm going to get going now," Renae said. "Are you going to be ok?" Londyn nodded and put on a brave smile. "You guys have a nice night."

Now it was just them two. Adam was alone with his little girl. It was amazing and frightening at the same time, but he couldn't imagine how Londyn was feeling. He set the envelope on the kitchen table and walked towards Londyn, "I'm so happy you're here," he said. "You want me to take your jacket? Are you thirsty? Hungry." he realized that he was rambling and apologized.

Londyn was about to speak, but the tears gushing out of her eyes stopped her from speaking.

It was all too much for Londyn to handle. Adam was taken aback by her sudden outburst. He needed to be strong for her.

"Hey, everything is going to be okay, I know it's a lot to handle, but we're going to get through this together." Londyn didn't look at him., but she heard and listened to every word he said. Adam wanted to pull her into a hug, but he didn't know if she was ready for that kind of intimacy. So he just let her cry it out.

Eventually, Londyn calmed herself down. Her eyes were red and her face tear-stained. She looked at Adam with her light brown eyes, Adam offered her a smile and stood up.

"Do you want to take your jacket off?" Adam asked. Londyn nodded and pulled her arms out of her sleeves. He took the jacket from Londyn and hung it up on the coat hook by the front door.

"Let me show you around the apartment," Adam said. He tried to sound as lively as possible. Adam walked around the apartment showing her where everything was. The kitchen, balcony, bathroom, and his bedroom. As he walked through his place he realized that it was very manly, not very family-decorated. He made a note to change that.

After Adam showed Londyn his room, he reached her room. "This is your room," Adam said opening the door. He turned the light on and Londyn walked in and her eyes widened. "I hope you like it, I tried to decorate with things you like," he said.

Londyn wandered around the room looking around. Adam stood at the doorway watching her carefully. Londyn touched the bed, and the desk, and looked out the window taking in the scenery. "I love it thank you, I never had a room like this before. I mean when I was living with my mom I had a room to myself, but it wasn't as nice as this. When I was in a foster home, I usually shared with the other foster kids" she said simply.

Adam was happy that he had the privilege to provide her with nice things. It's the smallest things that can make someone happy.

Adam walked towards the closet door and opened it. "I bought you some clothes," he said. "We can go shopping for some more when you feel you're ready"

Adam took a box-shaped item that was wrapped in pink wrapping paper from the top shelf of the closet. "This is from me," he said handing it to her.

Londyn took it apprehensively, tearing the wrapping paper carefully. Under the pink wrapping paper was a doll wearing a dress. It kind of looked like her. Londyn smiled down at the doll.

Seeing Londyn smile warmed Adam's heart. "I remember you telling me that you like to play with dolls. I was thinking of taking you to the toy store, so you can pick out some toys that you like to play with" he tells her.

Londyn looked up at Adam with excited eyes. "Thank you, I would love that," she said with a hint of excitement in her voice.

Adam was glad that he could keep her comfortable, he told her that he left her be, to let her unpack, and left the room to start cooking dinner.

A while later, Adam set the table and looked up to see Londyn standing in the doorway watching him silently. "Is everything okay Londyn?" Adam asked. "Would you like to sit down, I made spaghetti."

Londyn slowly made her way towards the kitchen table pulled a chair out and sat down. Adam put some spaghetti in two bowls. They both sat down to eat.

After a couple of moments of silence, Londyn spoke up. "What do I call you?" she asked him.

Adam should have expected this question, but it hadn't occurred to him since she arrived. "How about Adam," he tells her with a smile. He doesn't want to force her to call him dad, she will call him that when she is ready. Londyn nodded, taking a bite of her spaghetti. For the rest of dinner, they made small talk, Londyn warming up to Adam a little bit more.
