Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey guys! :D 0~0 ;p
So….yeah.
I postponed this scene for a LONG while….I won't even give you an excuse….but at least I got it out to you now! Imma be frank and ask you to go easy on me with this scene (these babies are hard to write!).
Someone commented that the superhero names were hard to keep straight (I forgot who and I'm too lazy to see who it was…sorry) so for the actual story part I'll keep their OG names, and for the dialogue I'm going to use their superhero names.
For those of you who forgot:
Keefe is "H". (I'll bold it when his name pops up to make it easier)
Sophie is "Moonlark"
Fitz is "Captain"
Dex is "Techno"
Biana is "Sparkle"
Can you guys make an exception with this story, and pretend that Keefe's mom isn't part of the Neverseen? Pretty please, with a cherry on top?!
Anywho, this scene takes place two weeks after part 2. (HA! I rhymed!) :) :o :s
P.S. There's some gun violence in this scene, and it's a little more intense, just to warn you.
P.P.S There's a quote from Bronte that I made Mr. Forkle actually tell Sophie.
Sophie walked down the hall with a deep feeling of self-consciousness sitting in her stomach. In all her years in the resistance, lunchtime was the activity that scared her the most…even more than stopping criminals from robbing a bank, or even confronting the leader of the Neverseen…
Why?
All the members in the Black Swan had a disguise based off of an animal to keep their identity hidden from the Neverseen and everyday people. But those who stayed during 12:00pm could get lunch in their base's cafeteria. It is then, and only then, that you were able to take off your mask and show who you really are. No one hid their identities.
…everyone took their masks off…
…everyone had a chance to be normal amidst all the secrecy…
…everyone but Sophie Foster…
Because of all the powers they'd given her due to the tweaks they'd made to her genetics, Sophie could never show anyone her true identity. She knew most of her superhero friends in real life, since she'd seen them with their masks off.
But none of them knew it was her that was the Black Swans Moonlark…
No one could ever find out who she was….
It wasn't that she resented her life with the Black Swan, they'd provided her adoptive parents to live with, and Grady and Adeline were amazing…but she wished there was at least one person she could be truthful to….
As Sophie thought this, she felt a bitter sensation come over her. She pressed her fist to her stomach to push the dark emotion within herself. Maybe it would come in handy the next time she ran into the Neverseen.
Sophie quickly composed herself before she caught anyones attention. Just as she was about to enter the cafeteria, and endure another half hour of discomfort, a teasing voice interrupted her. "Yo Foster!"
Sophie turned around, fully expecting the familiar boy with artfully tousled blond hair and ice blue eyes that ran towards her.
"Keep your voice down H!" Sophie said to Keefe.
With all the secrets she kept, of course it was Keefe who found out that part of her real name was Foster. He didn't know if it was her first, middle name or last name, but he insisted on calling her "Foster" when they were alone.
She didn't realize it until then, but thankfully no one was in the halls but them.
"'Hey' to you too," Keefe, a boy from her school, smirked as he reached her in record time.
"Hey H." Sopie said with a smile, as she was greeted by the person that was the closest thing she'd ever had to a boyfriend in the Black Swan. It was surreal that she could think that. They flirted sometimes, but they didn't kiss or go on a date or anything. She went to school with him in real life, but he didn't even know she existed. It could be because he was a Junior in high school, while she was only a Sophomore…but they had a handful of classes together. Despite that, she wasn't surprised she hadn't guessed who she really was.
"For the last time, the name's Hunkyhair!" Keefe said and adjusted the belt that connected to the fox tail part of his suit. Honestly anyone else would look ridiculous in his superhero suit, but H somehow managed to pull it off.
Sophie rolled her eyes and said, "The day I call you Hunckyhair is the day you find out who I am."
"I'm getting close!" Keefe insisted his smile turned excited. "Are you Ella Brown?"
"Who?" Sophie asked and raised an eyebrow.
"She goes to my—our?—school."
Sophie shook her head sadly.
"Erg! Why are you so impossible to track down?" Keefe complained. "I've been trying to find you for two years now, and the only clue I got was that you have 'Foster' in your name history. Everyone figured out who I was even before I took off my mask for the first time…"
"No offence, but you aren't exactly subtle H…" Sophie said and playfully shoved him. "Speaking of which, why do you have your mask on?"
"I thought you shouldn't be the only mysterious one around here." Keefe teased, though she knew that he was doing it so she wouldn't be the only one not wearing a mask. He was kind and considerate like that.
"Very funny." Sophie smiled and turned around to walk to the cafeteria.
Sophie felt a hand grab her forearm, gentle but firm, and turned around to see Keefe looking at her too seriously for her taste.
"Foster…it's not right that you have to hide yourself from everyone."
Sophie's breath caught in her throat as she realized how close he was to her. She could feel the warmth of his hand through her super suit.
"I-I don't have a choice…" Sophie said, caught off guard.
"There's always a choice." Keefe said in a voice full of emotion. He stepped closer to Sophie and she resisted the urge to take a step back.
Sophie looked down sadly. "Not for me…"
Keefe took hold of her hands in his and gave her a small smile. "If you tell me who you are, I could help you."
"I don't know…" Sophie said hesitantly.
"Please…I know I joke around, but I can keep a secret…" Keefe said desperately. "You mean a lot to me Foster."
Keefe reached his hand up to her face and cupped her cheek.
Sophie savored the moment, and the closeness of Keefe, knowing a moment like this wouldn't occur everyday.
"You mean a lot to me too H." Sophie said and smiled.
They stood there for a few moments, just Sophie and Keefe, their bodies pressed together.
Then hesitantly, as if waiting for her to protest, Keefe moved his hand from her face, and reached towards her mask.
Sophie felt stricken, not sure if he was really going to do what she thought he was going to do...
His fingers brushed the side of her white and blue domino mask, like he was imagining what she looked like without it.
"H…" Sophie breathed. All the words she didn't say were in that one name.
He was going to do what she thought he was going to do…
He was going to take off her mask…
She wanted to stop him, tell him it wasn't safe to know who she truly was…
But she couldn't find the strength to say it…
She closed her eyes. She didn't give him permission to do so, but she didn't tell him he couldn't…
And he knew that.
Keefe slowly moved his hand to the edge of her mask and gently slid his fingers under it, about to take it off…
Sophie grabbed Keefe's hand, her eyes still tightly closed, like it was paining her to stop him.
She slowly pulled his hand away, and her mask fell securely back in place. "We can't…"
Keefe sighed and gently tightened his grip on her hands.
"I'm sorry Keefe…" Sophie whispered, not even bothering to use his code name. "I don't want it to be like this…I'm so sorry…"
"Hey, you have nothing to apologize for." Keefe said softly.
Sophie wrapped her arms around him and laid her head on his shoulder. "I wish I wasn't the Moonlark…"
"Someday you won't be anymore…and you can fully take control of your life." Keefe promised and pulled her closer to himself.
"The second that time comes I'll tell you who I am. I promise." Sophie said and looked up to smile at him.
Keefe smiled and squeezed her a little tighter.
"Moonlark?" A familiar voice asked.
Sophie's arm stopped mid-swing. She was currently in the training hall and trying to practice her aim with a throwing star, her choice weapon. She turned around to see a familiar bloated figure, standing a few feet behind her.
"Is everything okay Mr. Forkle?" Sophie said and lowered her weapon.
"Yes, the Collective would like to see you." Mr. Forkle said and gestured for her to follow him. Sophie put her throwing star in one of the hidden pockets in her super suit, and walked after Mr. Forkle.
She'd been waiting for two weeks for the Collective to make a decision regarding the tracker she put on Fintan. But the Collective, of course, took forever to decide on what to do. As Sophie followed Mr. Forkle to his office, her heart was beating faster and faster thinking that this was it.
This was the day that they would confront the Neverseen.
After years of hiding and running away, they were finally going to do something, give a counterattack to end the dangerous rebel group.
Sophie barely managed to keep her face as neutral as possible before Mr. Forkle opened the door to his office, revealing the Collective.
And Captain, H, Sparkle, and Techno.
"We have reached a decision on what to do about Fintan." Mr. Forkle said, his eyes surveying the room before settling on her. "We've decided to approve your idea, Moonlark, and we'll set a trap for Fintan."
Sophie expected to feel happy, or at least more relaxed that they were finally taking action…
She mostly felt sick to her stomach.
Keefe seemed to know this, she wasn't surprised because his superpower was Empathy, and gave her a reassuring look.
Sophie nodded at Mr. Forkle and said, "When and where?"
"This is boooooooooooring," Keefe complained from his position beside her. They were crouched down inside a bush, hiding. "We've been here forever and nothing's happening."
Sophie tried to stop herself from expressing the same concern herself. The part about where nothing was happening, not the bored part. About one-fourth of the entire Black Swan was hiding in various places around the big park where they were staging their ambush. Of course, one-fourth of the Black Swan was only thirty-five people, but still, they should be able to capture Fintan.
But Fintan didn't show up…
They'd been preparing this ambush for days and had finally found a place where Fintan alway traveled to.
Every single day without fail.
They didn't know if he came alone, but that's why they brought so many people. Most of them were vanishers, to keep their element of surprise, so Sparkle was with them. Where specifically, she didn't know.
Keefe had talked himself into coming, even though they didn't really need any Empaths. She was pretty sure it was because she was going to be at the center of the ambush.
It was Sophie's job to Inflict on anyone who came with Fintan. It was dangerous, because she'd have to come out of hiding to get a better shot, but she'd do it if it ended their war with the Neverseen.
"Just be patient." Sophie whispered to Keefe.
Keefe groaned but stayed silent after that.
After about half an hour Keefe shook Sophie's shoulder.
Sophie looked at him, about to ask him what was the matter, but she was greeted by Keefe looking fearful. He pressed his finger to his lips in the universal "shh" sign and pointed to their left.
There was Fintan.
He was walking down a path through the park, getting closer to them by the second.
Sophie gathered dark emotions deep within herself and readied to jump out and Inflict on him.
Keefe grabbed her arm and mouthed, be careful.
Sophie nodded and gave him a small smile, before she jumped out of her hiding spot and thrust her arm out.
But nothing happened.
Sophie was frozen with fear.
Just behind Fintan were more than a hundred people, armed with every weapon imaginable.
HOW COME NO ONE WARNED HER THAT THEY WERE THE ONES BEING AMBUSHED?!
Then Sophie saw the reason.
At Fintan's side was a man with black hair, his eyes shut tight and his fingers pressed to his temples.
He was a Mesmer.
Sophie looked back at Keefe, but he seemed to be frozen just like the rest of the Black Swan.
And her, she realized.
Sophie tried to move but she couldn't…
She looked at Fintan as he stalked closer to her, her heart beating faster than it had any right to.
"Ah, Moonlark. We meet again." Fintan said with a smug smile. "You must be confused. Allow me to shed some light on the situation. I've known about your little tracker since you first put it on me. I used your pathetic plan to finally get rid of the Black Swans' precious champion..."
Sohpie then thought of a lesson Mr. Forkle had once taught her: Inflicting comes from the heart, not the mind.
Sophie concentrated on that advice, letting the emotions swell inside of her.
Fear and pain and anxiety and concern and sorrow.
She let them boil inside of her…then she thrusted it at the Mesmer who was controlling everyone.
What happened next was a blur, weapons firing, fists flying, people running, yelling, crying.
Sophie was in the middle of it all, inflicting on any Neverseen members who came too close to the Black Swan supers, while also throwing anyone down bold enough to come close to her with her telekinesis.
She occasionally saw glimpses of artfully tousled blond hair, but she was too focused on not getting killed to focus on Keefe.
She didn't know how long the battle lasted. Minutes? Seconds?
When no one else came charging at Sophie, she took it as a sign that the battle was over, and looked around in shock at all the bodies on the ground. Most of them were clutching their heads in pain from her Inflicting on them.
Sophie looked around at the Black Swan members still standing, and saw Sparkle with them. She also saw Keefe punch the last Neverseen member to the ground, and immediately ran towards him. "H!"
Keefe raised his head, his eyes widened in relief that she was okay, and he ran towards her too.
About halfway through the battlefield, Sophie heard a gun fire off and looked to her left to see Fintan. He was laying on the ground covered in blood, his eyes staring out into nothing. And in his hand was a small handgun.
By the time Sophie realized what was happening, she already felt the unbearable pain of the bullet in her side. Sophie fell to her knees, one hand on the ground, and the other on her waist, trying to stop the wound from bleeding.
"Foster!"
Sophie barely registered what happened next.
Worried voices yelled all around her, the sound pounding into her head…
Strong arms grabbed and steadied her…
The scenery changed as she was carried away from the once peaceful park…
The last thing Sophie remembered was looking up to see Keefe holding her, a determined look on her face, before she fell unconscious.
Sophie drifted in and out of consciousness, hearing snippets of conversations.
"...bring her to Elwin…"
"...she's unstable…"
"...need to take the bullet out…"
"...hold her down, it'll hurt…"
Then Sophie felt a jerking pain, as the bullet was removed from her side. Then she felt soft bandages being placed on her wound, easing some of the pain.
Someone brushed her sweaty hair away from her face, and she heard a voice say, "Just rest Foster, you're safe now."
Sophie happily obeyed, the last thing she saw being a pair of ice blue eyes.
Sophie slowly woke to a pounding headache, and groaned.
She felt pressure on her hand and looked to her right to see Keefe holding it.
"Foster…" Keefe breathed.
Sophie smiled at him and squeezed his hand with what strength she had left.
"Hey H."
"We had me so worried…" Keefe said.
"Can't get rid of me that easily." Sophie said with a smirk and tried to sit up. Her banged up body only allowed her to prop herself in her elbows. She saw that she was in a cot, Keefe the only one in the Healing Center beside herself.
Sophie reached and pulled off the blanket on her. She saw that a strip of her super suit had been cut off around her waist, and replacing it was fresh bandages, not a spot of blood on them.
Sophie then realized what had happened. "Keefe! If Fintan–"
"He's gone, Foster. All the Neverseen are."
Sophie layed back down, sighing in relief.
Sophie was finally at peace.
No more running.
No more lies.
No more hiding who she truly was.
Sophie sat up with a gasp. This meant that she could tell Keefe her secret identity.
"Keefe…" Sophie said. "I-I need to tell you that…I'm…I'm…"
"It's okay Foster…you don't have to tell me now, or ever if you don't feel comfortable." Keefe said softly.
Sophie just lifted her hand to her mask and ripped it off, not feeling the slightest bit exposed from showing Keefe her real self.
Keefe gasped and said, "It's you?!"
Sophie didn't know if he was happy or disgusted. She looked down and nodded.
"My name is Sophie. Sophie Foster." She said to him as she looked at her hands.
There was a beat of silence and then Keefe grabbed her hand. She looked up at him and saw pure love shine on his face.
Sophie grinned.
Keefe leaned ever so closer to her.
She leaned closer to.
They met each other halfway and their lips met, soft and sweet. Keefe wrapped his arms around her, and she held his face close.
Sophie had never felt more happiness than the moment when she kissed Keefe.
