Sarah POV
She opened her mouth to rebut my point, but closed it again silently. She smirked. "When have
you ever panicked?"
"Let's see here. When I was three before the first day of pre-K. Oh, and when my powers came
in."
"So two instances in your living memory. And I'd bet that suddenly seeing the futures of
everyone in the auditorium was a bit disorienting."
"Indeed. It's not just people I see, but anyone near me, so my vision splits into different panels,
looking through walls and everything."
"So you have X-ray vision?"
"No. I can only see the people and what they are touching in my mind to see their actions. I
can't scan a room, look into an empty one, or see anything not touching a living being. And I
don't think it works for animals unless they're to interact with a human within the next five
minutes."
"What about a werewolf? Would you be able to see their future?"
"Perhaps. I've never encountered one. But I'd guess yes, because they are part human. And
before you ask if it will work on aliens, I have no clue how it would react to sentient, non-humans
with human-like intelligence. No, I don't know if a dolphin counts."
Layla had successfully calmed down with her curiosity, completely ignoring the loop-the-loop
that the bus driver did at a thousand meters in the sky.
Everyone else was still screaming and I heard the bus driver, courtesy of his future being
projected into my mind, say "Pfff! Freshmen."
"There she is. Sky High." Ron started narrating like a tour guide. I mouthed the words with her
hands dramatically placed on her hips. "Kept aloft by the latest in anti gravitational
propulsion…." Layla stifled a laugh. "She is in constant motion as a precaution against those
who might otherwise have nefarious plans…" I started mimicking his eyebrow and facial
movements. "...her location supplied only to a few highly qualified individuals such as myself,
Ron Wilson, bus driver.
He took us in for a landing and I whispered to Layla, "Brace yourself."
"Smooth and easy."
The bus landed, throwing everyone forward in their seats.
"Whoa. Sorry!"
As everyone started piling out, the man started his speech. "Word of advice. Don't miss the bus,
'cause the bus waits for no one."
As Will exited, he added "Except for you, Will Stronghold! You ever running late, running early,
or you just want to talk…" he whipped out a business card, "...give me a call."
"Thanks, Ron. Seriously." Will said, uncomfortable at the special treatment.
I tapped Layla on the shoulder, pointing to two boys who were leering at a girl dressed in pastel
blue. "Yeah! Freeze-Girl!" The boy who shouted beamed a laser at her but, and she froze him
and his pal in ice."
A group of identical girls dressed as cheerleaders with a short skirt and a half-sleeve shirt with a
star surrounded by blue and orange did routines, moving in somersaults and holding their
copies up. "Welcome newbies to Sky High! Juniors, seniors, all the rest. We're back in school.
Sky is the best!"
All the copies combined back into one girl with a glowing light in the torso of one of them.
"Whoo! We're number one!"
I grabbed Will and Layla's shoulders, stopping them seconds before a blur whipped past us,
surrounding us and herding us into a circle. The blur turned into an overweight boy wearing an
orange shirt and a black and white tracksuit with his arms crossed. A second boy stretched
himself like taffy and went down the steps like a slinky.
"Hey, freshmen!" called the slinky who had returned to a 6' 2'' male wearing an black shirt with a
skull and white and black striped sleeves, like a raccoon's tail with a vest overtop.
"Your attention, please," added the fat one.
"I'm Lash. Uh, this is Speed," said the Slinky.
"As representatives of the Sky High welcoming committee…We'd be happy to collect that $15
new student fee," continued fatso.
A new girl walked over, decked out in at least five shades of pink, with brown hair and bangs.
Her brown eyes sparkled and her blinding smile hit Will hard. He went into his own head, staring
at her with an obvious infatuation.
I hit Will's shoulder hard, causing him to rub it before sending me a glare. He nodded in thanks,
hearing the speech.
I'm Gwen Grayson, you student body president. I know you're all going to love it here at Sky
High. I know I have. I've just had the greatest experience…but there are a few rules that I just
want to let you know. First of all…"
My attention was diverted by a flash of red light. A boy wearing a leather jacket, with shoulder
length hair with a red highlight stood up, flames appearing in his hand as a group of boys
walked away laughing. I saw him hesitate, then put out the flames, sitting down with his head in
his hands. I was angry at those boys. I didn't know for what reason, but clearly the flame boy
was hurt.
"If you can remember those few simple rules, I promise you will not fall off the edge of the
school."
I turned my attention back to Gwen. I didn't need to listen to the rules because I had already
heard them five minutes earlier. "Follow me inside for orientation."
