Nathan was sitting at his office looking through the information Elizabeth gave him. Ughh how could I let this happen to her Nathan thought to himself. He was the only one still at the station which was weird because he was usually one of the first ones out.
Ding. Nathan picked up his phone to look at his notification. It was Lee giving him Elizabeth's address. He thanked him and headed for her house.
Back at Elizabeth's house, things were hectic. She was struggling getting around. Everything was pretty cramped because she lived in an apartment. Right as she was turning the corner, she hit a chair and it knocked her down. "Ow!" Elizabeth said in pain.
Knock Knock Knock
"Ms. Thornton? It's Officer Grant. Can I come in?"
"Sure," she muffled in pain. She was still laying on the floor with the chair on her. "Oh my goodness! Are you alright?" Nathan asked rushing over to her to help her up.
As she sat up she said, "Yeah I guess. The chair knocked me over as I was turning the corner. What are you doing here?" Nathan frowned. He could still tell that she was closed up to him.
"Uhh I just wanted to check on you. And I was wondering, did I upset you earlier?" Nathan looked at her worried when he asked. "Oh no. Sorry about that. It just brought up some memories… Anyways thanks for checking in on me Officer Grant. I really appreciate it." Elizabeth said as she grabbed her crutches.
"Oh. I was hoping that we could eat some pizza together. I picked some up on my way here if that's okay with you?" Nathan asked hopefully.
Elizabeth looked surprised by his offer. "Sure that sounds lovely. Thanks officer." Nathan nodded and grabbed the pizza by the door where he last left it.
Nathan put the pizza on the table as Elizabeth grabbed the plates. "I just picked up half cheese and half pepperoni since I didn't know which one you liked. Oh and I think it's about time you start calling me Nathan" Nathan told her.
"That's perfect," Elizabeth said. "You can call me Elizabeth." She added
They both grabbed a slice and sat on the couch. "Elizabeth, when you were talking about the memories, I sensed it was something sad. If you would like to share it with me, I'm happy to hear." Nathan offered with a warm and encouraging smile.
Elizabeth took a deep breath and started to share her story. "Umm, so I used to be married. Jack. He was a cop. A good one. We were engaged for 3 years and got married. We both met in New York when he was in the academy and became a couple and so one. Then after one week of us being married, he got called to do some undercover work, got shot and died." Elizabeth was looking into her lap fiddling with her hands.
As soon as Nathan heard her story, his heart broke for her. He grabbed her hand and gave it a squeeze. He could see all of the tears start to form in her eyes. She looked at him and started to cry.
Nathan pulled her into his arms and started comforting her. He started stroking her hair and saying words that she needed to hear.
After a couple of minutes, she stopped crying but stayed in Nathan's arms. Nathan looked at her and wiped the tears from her eyes. "Sorry, talking about it makes me sad." Elizabeth apologized.
"Hey, you have no reason to apologize. I am so sorry for what you've been through."
Elizabeth smiled from Nathan's comment and stood up to throw away their plates. "I have some ice cream in the freezer if you would like to stay for dessert?" She offered.
Nathan looked at his watch and said, "Thank you so much for the offer, but I have an early morning tomorrow at the station and it's getting pretty late." Elizabeth's face dropped, but she understood.
"Oh. Okay, well thanks for coming and bringing the pizza. I had a good time getting to know you," Elizabeth added as he got up and headed towards the door. Nathan turned around to look at her and asked, "Yeah, maybe we can do it again?"
"Yeah, I'd love that."
When he reached the door he turned around to see Elizabeth standing behind him using her crutches with tears in her eyes. He bent down to give her a hug and held on for longer than we usually would.
"Are you alright?" Nathan asks as they pull apart. Elizabeth looks at him and smiles. "Yeah I'm fine." She let go and Nathan opened the door.
"Nathan? Be safe" She added as he walked through the door. "You too." He replied. That was the best either of them have felt in a good while.
