Chapter 14: The fulfilled Promise
As Dash fell into his deep slumber he was haunted by another nightmare. This time, it wasn't something he'd already witnessed before. No. This time was something new. He found himself at their old home, but it wasn't destroyed. He seemed to be alone, what confused him. Where could everyone be? That's when he realized someone standing on the street before their house as he looked through a window.
Opening the front door Dash walked over to the stranger. As he approached him, everything turned dark. Suddenly, there were his parents and Violet, all laying on the ground in the darkness. The house was destroyed aswell.
"What is going on?!" Dash shouted at the man standing in front of him.
As an answer, the stranger just removed his mask, revealing to be Syndrome.
"YOU?" Dash took a step back in fear.
"Looks like I finally have my revenge. I couldn't take away my nemesis' youngest, so now, I will just have to break your family as your father broke me." Syndrome grinned self-confidently before glancing over to Violet.
"And I know exactly how to break you."
He walked over to her and grabbed a gun he took from one of his soldiers.
"Superheroes?" He shouted to the now waking Mr. Incredible before continuing
"You all bleed the same as we do. You're in no way special!"
With that, he grabbed Dash's sister and held her gun to her back.
"And I'll prove it to you." He said calmly before pulling the trigger.
Dash was shocked beyond reason. He saw the blood coming out of her body as Syndrome let her fall to the ground. Motionless. Soundless. Lifeless. Dash fell to his knees as everything blurred out and turned dark again. But he didn't wake up. No. Suddenly, there was fog all around him and he saw Violet the way she died, lying in front of him.
"Violet…" Dash cried, kneeling down next to her, hugging her dead body.
"She can't wake up anymore, Dashiell." A voice came from behind him.
As Dash turned around, he felt his heart skip a beat. Uriel stood in front of him.
"It's too late for her. And you know it aswell. There is no escape from the dark future that lies ahead."
The fog covered Violet's body as it made her disappear. Afterwards it approached Dash and everything turned into darkness.
His eyes shot open. The nightmare was over. As he came to his senses, he realized Violet has turned on the light and was sitting on his bed, looking at him with worried eyes.
"Another nightmare?" She asked warmly with sadness in her eyes.
Dash nodded. But this time was different. He remembered something. Something he told Violet a few days ago as he had another nightmare. A promise he made.
"Violet?" He started.
"Yeah?"
Dash sat up and hugged his sister before pulling back a little and looking into her eyes.
"I made you a promise. I will tell you everything if you want to know it."
This made Violet's eyes widen. She remembered him making that promise. But she was convinced he wouldn't tell her if she didn't ask him again. Luckily she was wrong.
"Of course I still want to know, Dash. From the first day we got here I wanted to know what bothers you to be able to help you." She answered.
Dash took a deep breath as he tried to figure out where to begin.
"You know, Vi. It all started when we were on that island and our lives were in danger. We managed to save each other several times as we ran from the bad guys or from the fire. Even as we got back into the city and that robot attacked us, we managed to get out of it all alive. But even though we survived, I always thought about what might have been if you got injured. Or worse… killed. And that's what was keeping me in my thoughts. That's also why I have so many nightmares, you know?"
Violet listened carefully as her brother explained everything. He continued
"The first nightmare I had a few days ago when you saw me crying outside… we were back on the island. And in that cave. The fire came and I grabbed your hand, but I couldn't save you. You got burned…"
Now, a few tears came to Dash's face as he tried to stay calm for her to understand what he said.
"The second nightmare was about that soldier who wanted to shoot us. This time, he was able to. He killed you in front of me. I didn't know what to do…"
Now, Violet felt tears coming to her own eyes.
"The third nightmare I had was about the robot. He hit you and threw you into a wall, then he crushed you… Every time I close my eyes, Violet, I see you getting injured or killed! Because I'm scared to lose you! More than anything…"
Violet was now crying a little, trying to stay strong for her little brother. She pulled him towards her and wrapped her arms around his neck.
"You will never lose me! We will always be there for each other! Noone can stop us. I promised you that our bond will only grow stronger and that we will always stay together. We're no ordinary siblings, Dash! We're super siblings! And we are best friends aswell, as I told you!"
Violet tried her best to calm her crying brother she was holding. He sobbed into her shoulder because of the pain he felt, going through all those nightmares again. But he wasn't done yet. He pulled back to look at her before beginning again
"Those nightmares were hurtful, but you remember when Bomb Voyage threw that bomb at you? I just couldn't let you get hurt… I needed to jump! I would do anything for you. As long as I can keep you safe, everything is perfect. And then… you went into that fog and disappeared. I thought I lost you for good, Vi…"
Sobbing again. But this time, it was worse. With a cracking voice he continued
"I'm so happy you are back… And now I had another nightmare… about Syndrome being back and shooting you in front of me. But it didn't end there!"
Violet looked at him with sad eyes as she waited for him to calm down a little so he can keep talking. While waiting, she slowly rocked him back and forth. It was exactly what he needed.
"When he shot you, everything went dark and only you and me were left. Then, Uriel came and said that there is no escape from a dark future and the fog took you and me… then I woke up." Dash finished, his head buried deep into Violet's shoulder.
Violet was sad to hear all that. But she was also happy. Happy that Dash told her everything. She felt that it must've been hard for him. He never really talked about his feelings since last week. Before they moved into this motel, she never knew if he was scared. But now it was all easy for her to see. And he let her see it.
"That's what's been bothering you this whole time?" Violet asked.
He nodded. Suddenly, Violet's expression turned to show a warm smile.
"Oh Dash. You are actually not scared because you were in danger or because of something that could happen to you… but for me? You cared so much about me from the beginning that you have only been sad since?" She asked as a few tears started rolling down her cheeks.
"Yes, Violet. Because I really love you. And I don't want anyone to hurt you. I can't lose you, sis…" His gaze was fixed on the ground in front of his bed as he felt Violet's arm around his back, pulling him closer to her again.
"You know what? You ain't gonna lose me ever. When we're together, we're the strongest! I have already told you several times by now this week, but I need to tell you again. You're the best brother a sister could ever ask for. I love you too, Dash. And from now on, we're going to fight every battle together!"
Dash's eyes lit up as he heard everything she said.
"That's it! That's how we will get our parents and everyone else back!" He said excitedly.
"Exactly" Violet smiled at him as they shared another hug.
Suddenly, a bright light appeared between them and illuminated the room around them. They watched in surprise to see the light returning to each of them before disappearing.
"What was that?" Dash asked in his confusion.
"I don't know" Violet answered while looking around "But whatever this was, I think… we did it"
It was already long after midnight. Even though Dash needed to go through all those horrible experiences again to tell Violet about it all, he felt happy. Happy that he finally told her. Happy that she finally knew all of it. Violet was happy too. Dash trusted her from deep within his heart. He could tell her anything. It's incredible how much their bond has increased in just a single week. And knowing this has only been a week, how much would their bond increase over the next few weeks? When things were going to be normal again after Uriel got defeated? They will have to find out.
Now they were tired. And they needed to sleep in order to be ready for the big fight next night. As he felt safer when Violet was around, he asked her if it's okay if he stayed with her. With a reassuring smile, she lay down next to her brother and they managed to fall asleep quickly.
