Chapter 4

Later that day, Tramp was out in the garden. Jock and Trusty arrived and said hello. Tramp greeted them happily. The three friends talked for a while, but then Jock noticed that Tramp was looking a little uneasy.

"Is something wrong Tramp?" he asked.

"Oh, it's just," said Tramp. "My owners have been not paying attention to me a lot lately."

He explained that the Dears haven't stopped loving him, it was just their love for him had just seemed to cool. Whenever he tried to get their attention, it was always "In a minute Tramp" and that morning when Jim got up to leave Tramp got in front of him and laid on his back expecting a tummy rub, but Jim just said "Not now Tramp" in a kind, but firm tone.

"They've been busy," said Tramp. "And are always talking about something. They said they're expecting a baby."

As they were talking Lady was walking by the house. She looked through the front gate and saw the three dogs talking. She was greatly attracted to the youngest dog. A handsome schnauzer terrier mix. His grey fur had a glossy sheen and was well kempt and a red collar and the gold tag sparkled in the sun.

"What are babies?" asked Tramp.

"Babies are what we all star out as" explained Jock.

"They're also a lot of trouble" said Lady humorously walking up.

The three friends turned around to see a female cocker spaniel around Tramp's age. Although her fur was somewhat unkempt, Tramp could see she was very beautiful. Her brown fur and she had brown eyes like him.

"Who are you?" asked Tramp in wonder.

"Friends call Lady," said Lady stretching loungely. "What's your name."

"Tramp," replied Tramp. "These are the guys, Jock and Trusty."

Jock and Trusty stared wide eyed at the young female dog. Even they were attracted to her.

"I couldn't help but overhear your conversation about babies," she said in interest. "They may be cute, but they can also be troublesome for us dogs."

"What are you talking about pigeon?" asked Tramp crocking an eyebrow.

"Humans can be very attentive to babies," retorted Lady. "Trust me, I know from experience. They'll forget about the dogs and turn them away."

Lady didn't necessarily hate humans, but she didn't really like the idea of being owned. She was the wild type of person and preferred the life of a street dog.

"My owners would never do that!" exclaimed Tramp in disbelief.

"What do you know?" said Jock somewhat annoyed.

"I've heard tales about dogs being abandoned by their owners when they've had babies," declared Lady. "It might happen to you" she teased.

"It's time you left pigeon," said Tramp looking away. "My owners really will be home soon."

"See you around" said Lady as she left.

"Don't listen to her," said Jock assuring as they watched her leave. "The Dears would never do that."

"She's certainly beautiful though" said Trusty in a flirty tone.

Tramp looked with interest. Of all the girl dogs he had met, there was something special about this one.
