"You're sure it's around here?" Akatani asked while looking around the busy plaza. Iida, who had his phone out, didn't answer for a second. From what Uraraka could see, the spectacled teen had a map pulled up, as he attempted to find the right directions. The directions were to a small ice cream place Uraraka had heard of. It was highly rated, and more importantly, cheap if the reviews were true.
"The map says it's across the street," Iida replied while pocketing his phone carefully.
"You said that four streets ago, kero," Asui pointed out, though Iida was already waving to the group to follow him. They all did so reluctantly, sticking close to him as they walked. As they did, Uraraka couldn't help but grumble over the day's exercise.
"I know I passed, but it was by a hair," she muttered, with Akatani listening quietly.
"It couldn't have been that bad," Akatani told her, thinking she was exaggerating.
"I lost every hero, except All Might," Uraraka replied, causing Akatani to go wide-eyed.
"Oh that's bad," Akatani muttered, changing his mind quickly.
"Better than me, kero," Asui interjected, "I missed one villain, and he killed a family of four."
Her blunt statement immediately drew the shocked eye of a nearby person. Though he kept walking, unsure whether to acknowledge the frog girl's words.
"What about you Akatani? How'd you fare against Bakugo?"
"He had me on the ropes surprisingly," Akatani replied, "He charged in like I thought he would, but he kept outmaneuvering my units. Not to mention he had my distraction force surrounded at least three separate times. Bakugo even kept his heroes from sustaining heavy injuries. I was worried he would beat them all before my real force could steal his aid."
"Hmm, it sounds like he fared better than me somehow," Iida muttered, a little downtrodden. Though his mood took a quick one-eighty in an instant.
"I think we should all take this lesson to heart. As students, we have much to learn for the future, even if the simulation was a bit unrealistic," Iida stated, and Uraraka couldn't help but nod with him. If they wanted to be good heroes, then they would have to do better.
"Unrealistic?" Akatani asked, causing Uraraka to look over at him.
"Well… yeah," Uraraka replied, though she could still see the Akatani's confusion.
"What was unrealistic about it?" he asked, Uraraka looking at him surprised for a second.
"They did have to nerf All Might," Asui replied, with Iida nodding in front of them. Except Akatani shook his head no.
"They didn't nerf All Might," Akatani countered.
"If that was true, then no one would have lost," Iida retorted, "All Might is just too powerful to be defeated."
"Not to mention he's never lost a fight," Asui pointed out, just as the group came to a stop in a wide-open plaza. It was bustling with people and lined with several stores on the outskirts. But Uraraka couldn't see the ice cream place.
"All Might isn't invincible you know. I could name a dozen different ways to beat him," Akatani said, though they all waved off the idea quietly. Don't get them wrong, they knew Akatani was creative in his methods. But taking down All Might of all people?
"The League of Villains thought the same," Asui countered bluntly, "Yet they still lost."
"Every villain has thought the same. It's just unrealistic to think anyone could be All Might," Iida added, while slowly looking around the plaza. Akatani simply sighed in response, knowing there would be no convincing them. It left the group quiet for a second, as they all looked out around the plaza.
"Yeah, I'm not seeing it Iida," Uraraka told him, while the teen pulled out his phone again.
"Maybe it's closed…" Iida muttered, quickly scrolling through his phone's map. It took a few seconds before he put it away slightly embarrassed. He didn't have to say anything for them to understand.
"Should we start backtracking? Maybe we passed it on the way here," Uraraka said, hopeful she was right. Iida quietly, as he continued to look around the plaza.
"That might work. Could take us a while though," Iida replied.
"Didn't Akatani bring Victoria with him? Couldn't we ask her for directions?" Asui asked, reminding everyone of the AI's presence.
"That's right!" Uraraka exclaimed, turning over to face Akatani.
"Think she can…" Uraraka attempted to ask, only to stop when she saw Akatani staring at something. Confused, she followed his eyes, finding a tall golden statue resting in the center of the plaza. It was rather tall, and decorated in all manner of gemstones. It took a minute for her eyes to recognize the statue was depicting a group of heroes. It only made her more confused as to why Akatani was fixated on it.
"Akatani?" she said, trying to get his attention. It didn't work though, the teen continuing to stare at the statue. It brought forth new questions, as Uraraka looked back at Iida and Asui, both of them now concerned.
"What's he looking at?" Asui asked, trying to follow Akatani's eyes. Iida, being taller than everyone else, had a far better view. Quickly Uraraka saw him squinting his eyes a little before recognition struck his face.
"That's the Elemental's memorial," Iida muttered, only giving Uraraka more questions.
"Who?" Uraraka asked, slowly glancing back at Akatani.
"They were a hero group that disappeared years ago. No one was able to find out what happened to them," Iida answered, adjusting his glasses. That was not what Uraraka was hoping to hear, as she slowly placed a hand on Akatani's shoulder. That finally seemed to snap him out of it, with Uraraka watching him slowly blink a few times.
"Akatani?" she again asked, this time seeing him turn to look at her.
"Oh, sorry. Zoned out for a second," Akatani replied. It was a decent enough excuse, one Uraraka wanted to believe. But something about it seemed off.
"Everything all right?" Uraraka asked, Akatani replying with a slow nod.
"Yep-"
"Midoriya is that you?" someone asked, interrupting Akatani. For whatever reason Akatani's eyes widened in response. He and the rest of the group turned to face the new voice, confused by the question. There Uraraka found a man in a lab coat walking to them. He had unkempt brown hair, was relatively tall, and had an odd smile on his face. It was odd. Quickly the man got ever closer though, before he looked over at Akatani for a few seconds.
"Ah, my apologies. I thought you were someone else," the man told them, with Akatani looking at him… nervously? That caught Uraraka by surprise. It was difficult to notice, but Akatani's hand was fidgeting as if inching toward his gun.
"It's fine," Akatani replied, quietly averting the man's eyes. The man didn't seem to notice or if he did he didn't mind. He started to walk away from the group, the brief interaction coming to an end before he spotted Iida. His smile got a little wider, as he brought a hand to his chin.
"Say, now that I think about it you seem familiar," the man said, "Have we met before?"
"I don't think we have." Iida politely replied, the man carefully rubbing his chin.
"Hmm… I don't know what it is, but something about your quirk seems… wait Ingenium! That's why you seem familiar!" the man suddenly exclaimed, "You're much too short to be him though, so you must be Iida Tenya then."
"You know who I am?" Iida asked surprised, the man quickly nodding.
"I believe I do. And if I'm right, then they must be students from UA?" the man deduced, "Let me guess, Uraraka Ochaco, and Asui Tsuyu?"
It was now the girls' turn to be shocked, and a little worried.
"How do you know us?" Asui asked warily.
"Well, I'm always on the lookout for new and upcoming heroes… Oh wait, I haven't introduced myself. Nagai Okitatsu, Vice President of the Hero Public Safety Commission," Nagai introduced, before wrenching a small business card from his pocket. He held it out for them to see, with Iida carefully grabbing it.
"I must say I and the commission are impressed with all of you. So many promising up-and-coming heroes," Nagai praised, Uraraka nervously laughing at the compliment.
"Oh, we're not all that impressive," she replied, with Iida and Asui nodding.
"Nonsense! You managed to survive a villain attack just as the school year was starting. I can't name a single other hero class who's gone through something similar," Nagai countered, which was a little more impressive. Though Uraraka had to force the image of Thirteen's bloody and broken body out of her mind.
"Still, you have a long way to go, and a little support can go a long way. So, if you ever need anything from me or the commission, just give us a call," Nagai told them, while slowly walking away. As he did so, he whispered "Oh, and tell Snake I said hello," with only Akatani managing to hear it. With that though Nagai was gone. Iida, who still held the man's business card, carefully put it in his pocket.
"That was peculiar," he muttered, with Uraraka quietly agreeing. However, as she did so, she noticed Akatani slowly holstering his gun. Which immediately made her worried. He had to have drawn it when Nagai was around, but why? She was about to ask him, but Akatani quickly spoke up.
"So uh… Ice cream?" he asked, pulling out his Idroid. Soon they were off walking again, with Uraraka all the more confused.
Why? That was the only question in All Might's mind. Why? Why was it that every lead on the MSF brought up nothing? See, it hadn't taken long for All Might and Tsukauchi to find the power plant. But when they arrived, they found the place in cinders. Bits of the building were crumbling in or had random holes on the exterior. Windows were shattered with glass littering the grass outside as if some powerful force blasted them out.
One room was even missing a roof. Not to mention every part of the building is covered in scorch marks. Were this place any closer to Musutafu, All Might would have wondered how no one saw it burning. And at first, All Might was hopeful. This much destruction meant something important had to have happened here. So he and Tsukauchi went inside and searched. But, you already know how this goes.
"Maybe we missed something," Tsukauchi tried to reason as he ran a hand through his hair, "This place is huge after all."
Tiredly All Might brought his hands to his face, thinking over the detective's words.
"I don't think we have time for that. Class is in an hour, and I don't think Ocelot would like me skipping out again," All Might replied, the sound being muffled slightly.
"Then should we come back?" Tsukauchi asked the detective, busy looking over the scorched halls they now stood in. His flashlight did little to illuminate the area, but it gave him a good enough few of everything.
"I… I don't know. All we're likely to find here is another dead end," All Might muttered, "It just doesn't make sense though, why can't we find anything? It's not like they just appeared one day."
"They could be censoring information about themselves," Tsukauchi reasoned, and All Might didn't want to think about that. The implications were not good if it was true.
"Do you have any ideas then?" All Might asked, removing his hands from his face.
"Well… have you asked Nezu?" Tsukauchi asked in return, only to be met with All Might's silence.
"You haven't, have you," Tsukauchi said, annoyed, only for All Might to shake his head in objection.
"I have. The problem is he can't tell us anything," Al Might replied, confusing Tsukauchi.
"Wait, can't?"
"Think about it. It's clear he trusts us, and I assume he would tell us everything if he could, but the MSF doesn't. If he wants to keep the MSF's trust, then more than likely he's keeping everything quiet," All Might explained.
"That still leaves the question of why," Tsukauchi muttered, with All Might agreeing. What did Nezu know? Why was it important enough to keep it secret? All Might tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, but it was becoming more difficult as time went on. The MSF was up to something, that much he was sure of. Why Nezu was helping them with whatever it was, All Might didn't know.
"Seems we're not going to find anything then," Tsukauchi again muttered, turning his flashlight to light up parts of the hall.
"At least we have that Colombia lead. Maybe I could throw some of my influence around, and have a chat with their ex-president," All Might reasoned quietly while walking forward. Tsukauchi followed next to him, as the two moved through the dimly lit hallway.
"Might take you out of the country for a while. You sure that's what you wanna do?" Tsukauchi asked, his eyes tracing over the area's darkness. All Might wasn't sure if it was the wisest course of action. Leaving right after Melissa arrived on campus was too big of a risk. Even if Midnight was right about the MSF being morally gray, he didn't want to risk Melissa or any of UA's students in that small chance. It seemed to be the only way though.
"Well, unless we run into a new lead in the next five seconds, then I'm gonna have… to…" All Might said, before slowly trailing off. He spotted something in his peripherals, barely making out what it was. He came to a stop, with Tsukauchi looking over at him. Quickly the detective brought his flashlight to where All Might was now looking. There it illuminated something new, a door.
"Did we miss this room?" All Might asked, thinking back to their search. He couldn't remember going inside it. Tsukauchi shaking his head no, only confirmed his memory. Slowly All Might approached the door. Looking over it, he couldn't find anything amiss. Carefully he grabbed the handle and opened the door. Instantly the smell hit him. Burnt flesh permeated through the room, causing All Might to gag.
Tsukauchi's flashlight helped little, but All Might could see enough. Inside sat a large machine resting against the back wall. Dozens of burnt and melted cables surrounded it, with distinct parts of the machine buckled in from the intense heat. Strangely enough, the large machine was the only thing in the room. All Might almost assumed it was a generator of some kind, but then Tsukauchi's light shifted a little, hitting a different spot. Slowly All Might turned green. A head was resting in the center of the machine.
Its eyes were cut out, and its mouth was wired shut. Its skin was burnt to a crisp, and partially melting. Dozens of wires, tubes, and pipes were jammed into the back of the skull. Neither man said anything as they looked at the head, slowly walking to. They both tried not to throw up, as All Might noticed another thing. The head had a bullet hole lodged right between its eyeless sockets.
"What the hell was going on here?" Tsukauchi couldn't help but mutter, though it voiced All Might's thoughts well.
"Seems we found our lead though. Not sure what we could use though," All Might said, examining the head closely.
"Well, regardless of the burns, the head is still somewhat intact. No large signs of decomposition yet, so whoever this is was killed recently," Tsukauchi said, looking over the head, "I'm going to call for backup. Forensics might give us some more answers."
"Here's hoping you're right," All Might muttered, still looking over the burnt head. Just what had happened here?
It had been an eventful few days, and to say All for One was interested would be an understatement. In less than a week, a new organization had taken Japan by storm, unleashing an unrivaled cacophony of fear. Now, All for One had heard the rumors of the MSF and their nation-state. But he never truly cared. They too would fall to his machinations, as all others would. However it was as he said, he never truly cared, that was until they stepped foot in Japan.
"They just had to bring in a swarm of new enemies," Shigaraki muttered while scratching his neck. Though All for One didn't see the action, it was loud enough for the bar's microphones to pick up.
"Patience Tomura, they will be dealt with in time," All for One told him calmly. Next to him, he spotted Garaki tending to one of his various machines. Ensuring they did their purpose in keeping All for One's husk of a body alive.
"But why? Why do we have to wait? These guys are just more low-level NPCs. Any of the doctor's pets could handle them," Shigaraki countered, annoyed.
"Indeed they could. However, it's best to learn as much as you can about our new enemy," All for One retorted.
"Learn about what? They're a random band of mercenaries," Shigaraki replied. He never said it, but All for One knew his pupil thought of hiring them. They were, however, only villains because the media said they were.
"Oh? Well, you're mistaken," All for One said, shifting slightly in his seat, "Tomura, in your meetings with Giran, have you ever heard the name Big Boss?"
"No. Just his ramblings about some NPC he calls the Broker," Shigaraki replied, with All for One remembering those times. It normally ended with Kurogiri losing a dozen ashtrays. Even with all his quirks, All for One couldn't stomach the idea of smoking as much as Giran.
"I thought as much. But you see, Big Boss is a legend among the criminal underworld. An almost boogeyman of sorts," All for One explained, "Nine years ago he was stealing from and blowing up oil fields in the Middle East. Seven years ago he and his men tore apart the largest drug cartel in South America. Five years ago he killed a warlord who controlled a massive army, and nuclear weapons."
All for One tried not to grumble that last part, still thoroughly pissed off some nobody managed to one-up him. This Tyrant had the HPSC shaking in its boots, while he was relegated as a side show by All Might. But he digressed.
"And just a few short months after that, he dismantled the largest human trafficking organization in Europe. He became a legend rivaling that of All Might. Now, he's here," All for One continued, leaving Shigaraki in silence for a second.
"He sounds annoying," Shigaraki grumbled, hearing the choice comparison between All Might and Big Boss. Good, All for One thought, better to add another enemy for his pupil to despise.
"But he's still only one guy. And you haven't said anything about his quirk," Shigaraki pointed out. Though Shigaraki couldn't see it on the screen, All for One nodded slowly.
"That is because no one knows his quirk. It is a heavily debated rumor on what it is," All for One answered, though he had a few ideas. It was nothing overly powerful like All Might's, otherwise everyone would have heard of him. But maybe something useful like invisibility, or a kind of active camouflage. Silent footsteps, enhanced senses, it could be anything. And All for One wanted it, whatever it was.
"So what then, we're not going to do anything?" Shigaraki asked, still annoyed. Weeks hiding out in the bar had made him feel cooped up. This wouldn't normally be a problem, but he ran out of games to play. All for One could tell his pupil was overeager, wanting to do anything other than sit around.
"Not yet. For now, we must rebuild our strength. Once that's done, the MSF will be crushed, leaving only All Might to deal with," All for One answered. The MSF's employment was nothing more than a minor nuisance. They would be dealt with, soon enough.
"I don't think I can take it anymore," Jiro muttered tiredly placing her head on her desk, "How long are they going to be here"
"Yeah. I know they're campus security and all, but it's just…" Kaminari added slowly trailing off. The class who had yet to break for lunch and instead lounged in the classroom, quietly agreed. For too many days they had walked onto campus, warily watching every guard they passed. It was worse for Jiro especially as she could hear every single aircraft flying around campus. Dozens of helicopters, massive cargo planes, and small drones made everything so noisy. It was better when her jacks weren't plugged into anything, but it was all still so loud.
However, Yaoyorozu couldn't bring herself to agree.
"They're just waiting to strike, I know it!" Mineta exclaimed fearfully.
"Tch. They won't do anything with All Might on campus," Bakugo scoffed. He didn't say it but everyone could hear the "Besides, I'd blast them to hell," that lingered after his reply.
"Come on guys, they can't be that bad. I mean what about Akatani?" Uraraka asked, trying to change their minds. However, she felt more like a hypocrite as the words left her mouth. She always kept an eye on the soldiers guarding the gate whenever she got to UA and always walked as fast as possible without seeming afraid.
"Well…"
"He's a child soldier," Asui bluntly stated, bringing everyone into a brief uproar.
"As- Tsu!" Iida exclaimed, his arms chopping quickly.
"What? We all were thinking about it." Asui replied, as the class slowly quieted down.
"It could have been better put, but yes," Iida agreed, his face turning to a frown, "I'm sure the MSF forced him into joining."
"Wait-" Uraraka tried to object, only to be quickly cut off.
"Think about it. He's been training for years, he has his own uniform and weapons, and he even has a trained attack dog," Iida explained, the class following his line of logic.
"Damn…" Kirishima muttered, "You think the teachers are trying to help him? Maybe that's why they made him a teacher's assistant."
"I don't think that's it," Yaoyorozu interjected, deciding to stop this before it got out of hand, "I don't think he was forced into this either."
"Yaomomo?" Ashido asked, confused, the class's attention now on her. She thought over her words carefully and how to explain it best.
"...Snake is his father," Yaoyorozu told them, sending the class into a round of shocked gasps.
"Snake!? As in the head of the MSF!? As in the supreme bad guy leader!?" Mineta exclaimed, before slowly turning pale. Akatani could have been a spy, sent to watch all of them for the MSF.
"How do you know this?" Iida inquired curiously.
"I saw them talking to each other at the end of our first training exercise with him. And they acted rather close," Yaoyorozu explained, remembering what she had seen. Her words quickly drew Todoroki's curious eye, and the air got colder for just a second. Yet it was barely noticeable.
"That doesn't change anything. Snake could have forced Akatani into joining," Iida countered, the others nodding in agreement. But Yaoyorozu just couldn't buy that idea. They acted far too close, and Snake looked genuinely proud when he and Akatani talked. Very carefully Yaoyorozu spotted Uraraka, who looked over at her. Her face said a thousand words as she tried to vouch for Akatani.
"Then wouldn't he be trying to escape? He's surrounded by the nation's top heroes. He's even friendly with All Might," Uraraka pointed out voicing Yaoyorozu's opinion. It made the class stop and think for a moment. It made sense. If he was forced into joining the MSF, then now would be the time he tries to escape. But surprising everyone, Todoroki spoke up.
"He wouldn't. Not if he thinks Snake loves him," Todoroki stated coldly, and suddenly Uraraka's point was moot. Yaoyorozu could see Uraraka thinking it over, not wanting to believe it. Yaoyorozu wasn't sure if she herself believed it. But it did make a sort of sense, as much as she hated it.
"N-no… he would have told us. We're his friends," Uraraka tried to rationalize, only for Bakugo to loudly scoff.
"You've only known the extra a few weeks," Bakugo countered, causing Uraraka to glare at him. Yaoyorozu meanwhile kept trying to think of some answer or point she could use. She still didn't trust the MSF, but Akatani and Snake's interaction was just too real to be faked.
"Yet we're still his friends," Uraraka retorted, looking over to Iida as he interjected.
"Uraraka, he probably thinks they care for him. He's gone through this for years, so he doesn't realize he's being abused," Iida told her.
"I know that isn't true. It can't be," Yaoyorozu said determinedly, slowly standing from her desk. It brought a few skeptical looks to her, as Ashido looked at her confused.
"Yaomomo, I'm finding that a bit hard to believe," Ashido replied, bringing over Yaoyorozu's determined look.
"I think you're forgetting someone we met recently. Someone, who wouldn't let Akatani's abuse happen, if it ever did," Yaoyorozu replied, now walking away from her desk and to the door. It left Ashido confused for a second as she saw Yaoyorozu stop right outside the door. She looked into the classroom as if waiting for them to follow her. It didn't make sense for a second, but Ashido slowly connected the dots.
"Grizzly," Ashido muttered, standing up to follow Yaoyorozu. Hagakure quickly followed, leaving the class confused.
"Grizzly?" Kirishima asked, looking over at Ashido.
"He's a soldier we met, he's… an ex-hero," Ashido replied, sending the class into another uproar.
"An ex-hero!?" Mineta yelled in shock.
"Why would he willingly join villains!?" Iida exclaimed, surprised, his arms already chopping wildly.
"Bullshit! Either he's a coward, weak, or you're lying!" Bakugo yelled, small explosions going off in his hands.
"It's true. I didn't believe it at first either, but he's an ex-hero. We'll take you to him if you want," Yaoyorozu offered, finding everyone in the class standing up to follow her.
"I'm telling you, it's true," Eagle told them, causing Ape to groan annoyed.
"Then why haven't we seen her yet, hmm?" Ape asked, remembering a conversation he had with the sergeant years ago. It left both Grizzly and Gecko to watch confused, as Eagle and Ape walked over to them to eat lunch.
"I don't know, this campus is a big place after all," Eagle tried to reason, while Ape shook his head slowly.
"Or you made it up all those years ago," Ape countered, the two reaching the others.
"Made what up?" Grizzly asked as he grabbed an MRE from his bag.
"Nothing-" Eagle tried to say only for Ape to cut him off.
"Years ago Eagle here, said UA had a hero dressed as a stripper. I didn't believe him, and now here we are at UA, with not one sighting of this hero," Ape answered, sending Gecko, who was in the midst of drinking water, into a coughing fit.
"Fucking what now?" Grizzly asked in surprise, thinking he misheard the Lieutenant.
"Look, it was years ago. For all we know the teacher could have been fired," Eagle countered though Ape quickly waved him off.
"W-wait, you mean Midnight?" Gecko asked, still coughing a little. The reply made Eagle snap his fingers before pointing at Ape with the widest smirk.
"Told you she was real," Eagle said, with Ape bringing a tired hand to his face
"Tell me you're joking," Ape asked only for Gecko to shake his head.
"Nope. She's real. Though she's more dominatrix than a stripper," Gecko replied, though Ape seemed to relent with that answer. It left a brief silence amongst the group as they all stopped to get their food. It wasn't much, and they all silently agreed that the food was terrible. But none of them could complain, having eaten the same MREs for days.
"Come on, I'll trade you the beef ravioli for the stew," Grizzly said, eying Gecko's meal.
"Please, that ravioli ain't worth shit. Neither is that brick you call a cookie," Gecko replied, waving him off. He then enjoyed a spoonful of the meal, relishing in its warmth.
"Eh, you give that cookie a bit of water, and you'll take that back," Eagle interjected, with Ape nodding in quiet agreement.
"If only milk didn't expire," Grizzly muttered, the others quietly agreeing. But hey, you did what you could, with what you had. Then again, the cafeteria probably had milk. Could stop by just to check, Grizzly thought. Seeing no one was taking the beef ravioli, Grizzly gave up his attempt at a trade. He was about to dig into his meal when a new voice piped up nearby.
"Excuse me, Grizzly?"
Hearing the voice, Grizzly turned slightly and spotted the black-haired girl he had met before. He tried to remember her name, but quickly realized she never told them it. Accompanying her were also the same pink-skinned and invisible girls. However, there were also a lot of new faces. One was a girl with dark purple hair and a pair of jacks hanging on her earlobes.
"Hey, kid. Got more questions?" Grizzly asked, the black-haired girl nodding calmly.
"In a way," the girl replied as Grizzly took a quick bite of his ravioli.
"Cool. So, who are they?" Grizzly asked, pointing at the large crowd of students behind her.
"My classmates, I believe you remember… wait I never told you our names, did I?" the girl asked, quickly realizing her mistake.
"You did not," Grizzly answered calmly.
"My apologies then. My name is Yaoyorozu Momo. The pink one you talked to before is Ashido Mina and the invisible one is Hagakure Toru," the now-named Yaoyorozu introduced, "As for the rest of the class we have Uraraka Ochako-"
She then went on to introduce the rest of her classmates, a few eyeing him suspiciously or outright glaring. The most prominent of these was a spikey-haired blond named Bakugo, a candy cane kid named Todoroki, and a teen with engines in his calves named Iida.
"Well, it's nice to meet them. This is Ape, Eagle, and Gecko," Grizzly said, taking another bite of his ravioli, "So, what's up?"
"You see, some of my classmates were discussing our teacher assistant and his… status in the MSF," Yaoyorozu slowly explained, Grizzly carefully following along.
"Ok…" Grizzly muttered, before eating more of his ravioli.
"And… a few of them were worried he was being abused," Yaoyorozu told him, deciding it was best to rip off the band-aid. It immediately made Grizzly freeze, the words registering in his mind. Next to him the rest of his squad had also froze, and Gecko could be seen to slowly start glaring.
"...What's your TA's name?" Grizzly carefully asked, to slowly hide his rising temper. Because if this was true, someone was going to die.
"Akatani Mikumo," Yaoyorozu answered.
"Akatani…" Grizzly muttered thinking over the name for a second. It sounded familiar, the man thinking he read it from a report he was given. But it didn't fully click. But then Ape quickly spoke up.
"Oh shit, you mean the boss's kid?" Ape asked, Yaoyorozu shaking her head at the surprised man.
"Yes. Do you know him?" Yaoyorozu asked in return, the lieutenant giving her a so-so-hand gesture.
"Eh, kinda. Met the kid once years ago," Ape replied, with Eagle giving him a confused look.
"Wait when did this happen?" Eagle asked, thinking over what Ape said.
"You were there. Dr. Emmerich went crazy, remember?" Ape replied, a look of recognition striking Eagle's face.
"Oh, I remember what you mean! That kid back then was the boss's?"
"Yeah, that was him,"
"I'm sorry, what happened?" Yaoyorozu interjected, thoroughly confused by what the two men meant. While at the same time, she tried to translate everything for her classmates.
"Ah right. See a few years ago the MSF's head of R&D, Dr. Emmerich went nuts and tried to experiment on Akatani," Ape replied, instantly shocking her, and the rest of the class when she translated his response.
"Oh my-"
"Exactly. However, R&D's co-head, a woman named Dr. Strangelove, walked in right before Dr. Emmerich could start any kind of experimentation. To speed things up, Dr. Emmerich shoved her into a coffin, Eagle and I arrived to break her out, and then I ran out to catch Dr. Emmerich," Ape explained, bringing a shocked look to Yaoyorozu's face. Next to her a girl Grizzly remembered as Uraraka said something to Yaoyorozu.
"Was Akatani all right?" Yaoyorozu asked, more than likely translating for Uraraka.
"He was fine. Nothing bad happened. Though it made the boss pissed," Ape replied, Yaoyorozu taking note of that last part.
"How pissed are we talking," Eagle asked curiously.
"Well, if Commander Miller hadn't talked him down, I'm pretty sure he would have ripped Dr. Emmerich apart," Ape answered, watching as Yaoyorozu translated for the class again. It brought a sigh of relief to Uraraka, who then turned to face the rest of the class.
"[See?]" the girl said, Grizzly unsure what she said. He didn't think it best to pry though, so he kept quiet.
"[They could still be lying,]" Iida remarked, though he seemed uncertain.
"[You don't say four eyes. They're villains for fucks sake, why would they tell us the truth,]" Bakugo retorted, annoyed.
"[I wouldn't say they're-,]" Yaoyorozu replied, slowly noticing the angry look Bakugo was getting from Gecko.
"[They get paid to kill people and blow shit up. They're villains,]" Bakugo said, interrupting her.
"[They don't just kill people. They do other things,]" Yaoyorozu tried to defend, a few of her classmates still looking skeptical, "[Here, I'll ask them about one of their contracts, happy?]"
Bakugo only grumbled quietly in response. Grizzly then saw Yaoyorozu take a quick deep breath, before facing his squad again.
"So… what were you doing in Colombia?" Yaoyorozu asked.
"Me? I was on an internship, remember?" Grizzly pointed out, with Yaoyorozu shaking her head slowly.
"Right, poor choice of words. I meant the MSF," Yaoyorozu corrected.
"...Oh…" Grizzly muttered, realizing things were going to get difficult. He slowly turned to Ape and Eagle, remembering the few times they talked about their time in South America. Already the two men had stopped what they were doing, slowly blinking.
"Colombia…" Ape muttered to himself, while Eagle's hand traced his hand cannon.
"Is something wrong?" Yaoyorozu asked, noticing the change in the two men's demeanor.
"Colombia's a bit of a rough spot for them. Bad memories," Grizzly replied, a hint of pity in his tone as he looked at his Lieutenant and Staff Sergeant.
"Oh, I'm so sorry! If you don't want to talk about it, it's fine-" Yaoyorozu told them apologetically, only for Ape to interrupt.
"No, no… it's fine. It was years ago, and we've gotten over it… mostly," Ape told her calmly, though you could hear the tension in his voice, "It was years ago, but I can still remember it clearly. Command had gotten a contract with the Colombian and Venezuelan governments. Both parties were dealing with an out-of-control cartel that controlled a good portion of the Venezuelan countryside."
"My word. How… How could that have happened? Both countries had great heroes at their disposal," Yaoyorozu said in disbelief. And Grizzly mentally scoffed at her last comment, knowing full well neither country even had heroes. Of course, that answer wouldn't work, so Ape was able to come up with a believable lie.
"Like I said, the cartel had taken control of the country's outskirts. Secluded areas that lacked decent roads or infrastructure. Most heroes couldn't navigate through. And for those that could, none of them could be resupplied without sustaining heavy casualties," Ape explained, Yaoyorozu following his line of logic, "Even worse, the cartel had plundered parts of the Venezuelan military."
"So they all had guns," Yaoyorozu muttered, before translating for her class. It caused Bakugo to scoff at the last part, and Todoroki to become disinterested.
"Not just guns. They had tanks, artillery, attack helicopters, rocket launchers, missiles, and the works. They tore apart the countryside, killing anyone who didn't obey them. Entire towns were ransacked, burnt to the ground, and their inhabitants sent into forced labor," Ape told her, Yaoyorozu slowly turning pale. It only got worse as Ape continued to describe the destruction. Bakugo who originally scoffed, now had his eyes wide in shock.
"There was this one town we came across, I can't remember the name. But the… the entire place was empty. I thought it was strange at the time, but assumed the civics were just hiding. But when we started to search the homes, we couldn't find anyone. We checked the nearby fields and still didn't find anyone. We… we checked the small schoolhouse, and found nothing," Ape continued, though it became harder to go on. Grizzly could see the Lieutenant's hand shaking lightly as he went on.
"Two hours after we arrived, our platoon's drone operator spotted something out in… in the jungle. We were sent out to investigate… and… we…" Ape trailed off, closing his eyes for a second to try and calm down. Grizzly heard him take a few loud deep breaths before finally saying "We found a pit. It had to be nine feet deep, maybe more. And… inside it had to be thirty, or forty people. All dead, and piled on top of each other."
Yaoyorozu couldn't help but gasp, as she cupped a hand over her mouth. She didn't translate for her classmates yet, so they could look at her confused. When she finally explained what she heard, the rest of her class went silent.
"Some… some of the people in the pit were… they couldn't have been older than seven," Ape muttered, bringing his hands to his face, while Eagle put a hand on his shoulder, "Some of the girls… they were… most were beaten and raped before… before death…"
"[Those… those bastards,]" Jiro angrily grumbled when Yaoyorozu translated.
"[Such unbridled evil,]" Tokoyami muttered angrily as well.
"They're monsters," Yaoyorozu said, still starkly pale.
"They were. Which is why the Colombian and Venezuelan governments contracted us," Ape told her, still taking a few deep breaths, "Our objective was to liberate the countryside and to stomp out the cartel's presence. It took months of fighting, but we did it."
"Even then, I still feel as if we were too late. I can hardly count how many civies the cartel killed," Eagle spoke up, deciding to add to what Ape said. The Lieutenant solemnly nodded in agreement though. It left everyone quiet for a moment, as they all stewed in the men's words.
"Sorry for uh, dragging down the mood," Ape said remorsefully, only for Yaoyorozu to quickly shake her head.
"No, it's my fault for bringing it up," Yaoyorozu replied.
"Eh, you didn't know," Ape told her, a small attempt to comfort her. Grizzly could tell she didn't believe it though. Of course, then Bakugo started saying something.
"[I don't buy it,]" Bakugo stated, turning to glare at Ape briefly.
"[Come on, you think he made all of that up? I could see his hand quivering,]" Kaminari pointed out, with Bakugo scoffing in response.
"[He could be a good actor,]" Todoroki countered, while facing Yaoyorozu, "[Ask him what the fighting was like. If he's lying, he might contradict himself.]"
"[Wha- No! I'm not asking him that!]" Yaoyorozu exclaimed. Just talking about Venezuela already had Ape on edge, and… well he and the other soldiers seemed like good people. She did not want to put him through those memories again.
"[Oh please, don't tell me you're buying his act. Ask him about it,]" Bakugo told her, with Yaoyorozu glaring back at the blond.
"[No.]" she said, determined, before turning to face the rest of the class. She had hoped they would agree with her decision. A few did, such as Jiro, Uraraka, Tokoyami, Kaminari, Ashido, Hagakure, and Sero. However, a few didn't. Iida looked skeptical like Todoroki and Bakugo. Sato, Ojiro, Asui, Aoyama, Mineta, Koda, Kirishima, and Shoji seemed affected by Ape's words, but also a little hesitant.
"[It… wouldn't hurt to be sure,]" Asui added, looking over at the soldiers concerned.
"[Yeah. And well… These guys sound kinda manly. I'd rather be sure what they're saying isn't a lie,]" Kirishima agreed while rubbing the back of his head, "[They don't have to if it's too much though. We could always come back later.]"
Yaoyorozu couldn't help but look at her class surprised, but ultimately she found herself outvoted. She could have just left, just walked away. But… there was a small part of her that still had questions. Taking a deep breath she turned to face the soldiers again while working up the courage to ask the question.
"I am sorry for asking this, and you don't have to answer, but my classmates want to know what it was like for you," Yaoyorozu hesitantly told him. Nervously she waited, as the soldiers thought over her words.
"...Well… there was no AC, that's for sure. Every day was a scorcher out in the field. We were practically sweating our balls off the first day. It didn't help that our first assignment was rebuilding a bombed-out town…" Eagle carefully began, slowly ramping up one of many stories, with no one realizing lunch had ended.
