Petalburg X
I woke up to the familiar weight of Han sprawled across my stomach, snoring loudly enough to rival a chainsaw. His makeshift twig "cigarette" bobbed slightly as he exhaled. That wasn't unusual, I'd gotten used to Han's peculiar habits by now.
What wasn't usual, though, was the heavy tail draped across my face, making it nearly impossible to breathe.
"Atlas…" I mumbled, my voice muffled by the fluff of his tail. "Get your tail off me… I can't… breathe…"
The oversized Stufful, clearly unbothered by my plight, didn't even twitch. With a groan, I began shimmying down the bed, trying to escape from the smothering fluff. The movement must've jostled Han, because he stirred, blinking sleepily at me. Then, as if realizing the absurdity of my situation, he laughed.
"Thanks, Han," I said dryly, finally managing to free myself and sit up. "You really know when to help, huh?"
Han hopped down to the floor, the twig still firmly clamped in his teeth and stretched his arms above his head. Atlas, meanwhile, yawned lazily, his tail swishing slightly as he settled into a new position. I shook my head at him, but I couldn't help smiling. Atlas had always been a bit oblivious to how much space he took up or how much weight his tail could throw around.
Across the room, Bodhi was already in his usual spot near the window, basking in the soft morning sunlight that streamed through the curtains. His stubby legs shifted slightly as he adjusted his position, the Shroomish looking as peaceful as ever.
I glanced at the clock on the nightstand. It was still early, but the nerves were already starting to creep in. Today was the day, of the gym battle with Norman. The thought sent a jolt of anticipation through me, and I stood, stretching out the kinks from a night of questionable sleep.
"All right, team," I said, rolling my shoulders. "Time to get ready. Big day ahead."
Han perked up at my words, his twig twitching like it was some kind of antenna. Atlas, on the other hand, let out a low grumble of protest, burying his face further into the blankets. Bodhi, of course, didn't even flinch, content to soak in his sunbeam.
"Come on, Atlas," I said, giving the Stufful's massive frame a gentle nudge. "I need all of you awake for this one. Let's not make this harder than it has to be."
Atlas finally sighed—an exaggerated one, as if to tell me how inconvenient this was before slowly rolling onto his feet. He shook out his fur, and I caught a flash of his sleepy eyes before he gave me a slow, reluctant nod.
"Thanks, buddy," I said with a grin. "Knew you'd come around."
Han was already bouncing around the room, tugging at my backpack with the kind of energy that only he seemed to have in the mornings. Bodhi, as expected, remained blissfully undisturbed until I walked over and gently picked him up.
"Sorry to ruin your sunbathing, Bodhi," I said, tucking him into my arms. "But we've got a gym leader to face. Can't have you slacking off now."
The Shroomish gave me a faint, unimpressed look, but he didn't resist.
With my team gathering and the morning routine underway, the weight of what lay ahead settled on my shoulders. Norman wasn't going to be an easy opponent, but I felt ready. Well, as ready as I could be.
"All right, let's do this," I muttered to myself, grabbing my bag and heading for the door.
""
Walking down toward the Pokémon Center's cafeteria, I spotted Roxanne already seated at one of the tables, looking like she was ready to take on the day. She was dressed neatly, as always, with a cup of coffee in her hand. What caught my attention, though, was the way she was staring at her plate. Her gaze was locked on her food like she was trying to psychically will it to do something.
Sliding into the seat next to her, I tilted my head. "You okay, Roxy?"
She flinched slightly at my voice, her eyes snapping up to meet mine. "Oh, Michael! When did you get here?"
"Just now," I said with a chuckle. "You looked like you were having a staring contest with your breakfast. Everything okay? A bit of pre-gym jitters?"
She let out a soft laugh, setting her coffee down. "A bit. I was mostly just thinking about how today's battles are going to go. You know how it is—trying to mentally prepare."
"Fair," I said, leaning forward with a curious expression. "Anything in particular bothering you?"
"It's not really that I'm nervous," she admitted, stirring her coffee absentmindedly. "It's more… anticipation. This is going to be one of the toughest fights we've had so far. For trainers like us, the third badge is always seen as a rite of passage."
I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Rite of passage? Why's that?"
Roxanne looked at me like I'd just asked if water was wet. "You don't know?"
I resisted the urge to cringe. Right, I'm supposed to know this stuff. Feeling cornered, I improvised quickly. "Uh, well… I grew up in a pretty small town. Not a lot of trainers around, you know? I never really got the chance to hear about all this stuff firsthand."
Roxanne's expression softened. "Oh, that makes sense. Sorry, I didn't mean to sound condescending."
"No worries," I said with a smile. "So, what's the deal with the third badge?"
"Well," she began, sitting up straighter, "the first and second badges are considered achievable for most trainers with minimal to moderate training. As long as they've got decent fundamentals and some natural talent, they can usually succeed. But the third badge is where things change. It's the point where gym leaders stop holding back as much and start battling more seriously. They'll bring stronger Pokémon or use more advanced strategies, and it becomes a real test to see if a trainer has what it takes to continue."
"Interesting," I said, nodding thoughtfully. "So, it's like the barrier between casual trainers and those who want to climb the ranks."
"Exactly," Roxanne said, smiling faintly. "Many trainers stop their journey at this point because it becomes clear they don't have the drive or skill to progress further. But for those who do… the third badge is a turning point. It's when you start to really prove yourself as a serious trainer."
I leaned back in my chair, letting that sink in. "Huh. Makes sense. I guess it's like a wake-up call for some people."
"Exactly," she said again, taking another sip of her coffee. "It's both thrilling and intimidating at the same time. But that's what makes it exciting, don't you think?"
I grinned. "Yeah, I get it."
Roxanne returned the smile, the hint of nerves in her earlier expression replaced by determination. "Exactly. And I'm sure we'll come out stronger for it."
As we continued chatting, the sound of a door swinging open drew my attention. I turned just in time to see Flannery stride into the cafeteria, her fiery energy still there, but noticeably dimmed. She had dark circles under her eyes, and her hair looked like it had given her as much trouble as sleep did. Trailing behind her were Santi, her ever-reliable Torkoal, and Numsy, her energetic Numel. Santi lumbered forward with his usual deliberate pace, while Numsy hopped along, letting out a cheerful bleat that seemed out of sync with Flannery's sluggishness.
She spotted us at the table and waved, though it was more of a half-hearted flap than her usual enthusiastic greeting. "Morning, guys," she said, her voice a little raspy.
"Morning," Roxanne said, giving her a quick once-over. "Rough night?"
Flannery dropped into the seat across from us with a groan, resting her chin on her hand. "You have no idea. I couldn't sleep at all, kept thinking about today's battle. My brain wouldn't shut up. I'm excited, but, ugh… I feel like a burnt-out Rapidash right now."
"Figured something was up," I said, nodding toward her Pokémon. "Santi and Numsy look ready to go, but you… not so much."
Santi let out a deep grunt of agreement, his usual smoky exhale curling lazily upward. Numsy, ever the opposite, was sniffing around the table with bright eyes, clearly looking for something to eat.
Flannery let out a laugh, rubbing her eyes. "Yeah, they slept like logs. Meanwhile, I was tossing and turning all night. I don't know, it's just… Norman's gym, you know? I've seen how tough his Pokémon are. I'm hyped, but I'm also kind of terrified."
"You'll do fine," I said firmly, giving her a reassuring smile. "You've trained hard, and you've got a solid team. Plus, nerves are normal—they just mean you care about doing your best."
Roxanne nodded, her expression calm and supportive. "Michael's right. And remember, you're not doing this alone. We're all in this together."
Flannery managed a small smile at that, though her tiredness was still evident. "Thanks, guys. I just don't want to be the weak link, you know? You're both so solid in battles, and I feel like—"
"Stop right there," I said, cutting her off. "You're not a weak link, Flannery. Not even close. Don't let a rough night mess with your confidence."
"Exactly," Roxanne added, her tone firm but kind. "Every trainer has their strengths, just believe in yourself and your team."
Flannery's smile grew a bit stronger, and she straightened up slightly. "Okay, okay, I get it. Thanks. You guys are the best."
As the conversation lightened, Flannery's Pokémon began interacting with ours. Santi settled beside the table, letting out a soft plume of smoke that immediately caught Terra's attention. Roxanne's Nosepass tilted her head slightly, staring at the rising smoke with an expression that could only be described as fascination.
Rocky, on the other hand, was more focused on his food, chomping down with his usual enthusiasm. Atlas was curled up under the table, only half-awake, while Han darted around Numsy, playfully waving his twig like he was inviting her to join some imaginary battle. Numsy responded with an eager hop, bleating happily as the two began their usual antics. On the other hand, the only one unaccounted for would be Titan, and I haven't seen the little guy ever since I sat down.
Roxanne glanced at me as if sensing who exactly I was looking for and with her coffee cup poised mid-air, she smirked. "Titan already ate earlier," she said casually, lowering the cup. "He's resting in his Pokéball, and wants to conserve his energy for today's battle."
Something about the way she said it made me pause. That smirk wasn't just casual, she was definitely hiding something. Could it be? I thought to myself as I raised an eyebrow, but Roxanne simply sipped her coffee, not elaborating.
I didn't press her. If she had a trick up her sleeve, I'd find out soon enough. For now, I turned my attention back to Flannery, who was perking up slightly as she worked on her breakfast. The nerves were still there, but I could see her starting to relax, bit by bit.
"Let's make this count," I said, looking between them.
Flannery raised her glass of orange juice, managing a grin. "You bet. No way I'm letting a bad night stop me."
Roxanne nodded, a quiet confidence in her expression. "We'll give it our all."
As we continued eating, the Pokémon carried on their little interactions. Santi puffed out small plumes of smoke that seemed to fascinate Terra, who was now fixated on the Torkoal's rhythmic breathing. Rocky, meanwhile, watched Numsy and Han's game of tag with a faintly amused expression, though he didn't move from his spot.
Roxanne and I exchanged a glance, and she gave me another one of her mysterious smirks. It was subtle, but it spoke volumes. Something was up with Titan, and I had a feeling I'd find out soon enough. For now, though, I let it slide, focusing on the camaraderie at the table.
Despite the weight of the day ahead, the lively energy between us and our Pokémon made the morning feel lighter. The gym battle loomed, but for now, we had this moment to enjoy.
""
After finishing breakfast and gathering our things, the three of us headed out of the Pokémon Center, stepping into the crisp morning air of Petalburg City. The streets were already bustling, trainers and townsfolk alike moving with purpose. The energy in the air matched our own a mix of anticipation and determination.
Flannery walked beside me, her usual spring in her step starting to return as she shook off the lingering fatigue. Santi ambled beside her, his shell releasing faint wisps of smoke, while Numsy trotted ahead, occasionally stopping to sniff at the plants lining the sidewalk. Roxanne was on my other side, her calm demeanor making her feel like the steady anchor of our trio.
"You ready for this?" I asked, glancing at Flannery.
She blew out a breath, running a hand through her hair. "Yeah. I mean, I think I am. Norman's no pushover, but hey, we've trained for this, right?"
"Exactly," I said with a nod. "We've put in the work. Now it's just about execution."
Roxanne adjusted her glasses, her expression thoughtful. "As long as we stay composed and stick to our plans, we'll have a good chance."
Flannery grinned, though it was a little wobbly. "Stick to the plan. Got it. Just… remind me what the plan is if my brain decides to bail on me mid-battle, okay?"
I laughed, shaking my head. "Don't worry. You'll be fine."
As we continued down the street, the towering structure of the Petalburg Gym came into view. Its design was as imposing as its leader's reputation broad and solid, with sleek lines and a clean façade that spoke to its no-nonsense approach.
"So, this is it," Flannery said, stopping for a moment to take it in.
"Yep," I said, my own gaze lingering on the gym's entrance. "Time to see what we're made of."
A moment of silence passed as we all stood there, the weight of the challenge settling over us. Even Numsy seemed to pick up on the shift, pausing her playful sniffing to stand beside Santi, who let out a low rumble.
Roxanne broke the silence, her voice calm but firm. "Michael, you'll be up first, right?"
I nodded. "Yeah. No pressure, right?"
Flannery punched me lightly on the shoulder. "No pressure at all. Just set the bar nice and high for us, okay?"
I smirked. "Oh, you know I will."
As we approached the gym's entrance, Roxanne glanced at me with a faint smile. "Good luck, Michael. We'll be cheering you on."
"Thanks," I said, taking a deep breath. "Let's do this."
The gym doors slid open with a faint hiss, revealing the sleek interior within. As I stepped inside, my nerves gave way to a surge of focus. It was time to prove myself and my team against one of Hoenn's toughest gym leaders.
We approached the receptionist's desk. The woman from before, the one who had raised her brow at our insistence to fight Norman's third badge team, gave us a knowing look.
"Well, well, well. You're back," she said, her fingers poised over the keyboard. "I take it you're here for your scheduled challenges?"
"Yes, ma'am," I replied, my voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through me.
She tapped a few keys, her screen lighting up with our registration details. "You've got three slots reserved today: Michael Kane at 10 a.m., Roxanne Voss at 1 p.m., and Flannery Moore at 2:30 p.m."
The receptionist's lips twitched in amusement as she handed me a clipboard. "Sign here to confirm, Michael. Once you're ready, you'll head to the waiting area. Oh, and just so you're aware, there's a decent crowd gathered today. Word got out that the Rookie Tournament winner is taking on Norman at the third badge level."
My stomach did a little flip. I hadn't fully considered how much attention this match might draw. I signed the clipboard, handing it back. "Great. No pressure."
Roxanne nudged me lightly. "You thrive under pressure. Just focus on your battle. The crowd doesn't matter."
Flannery gave me a thumbs-up. "Yeah, you've got this, Karate Kid. Show them why you're the champ."
The receptionist chuckled. "Good luck. You'll need it."
""
The waiting area was quiet, save for the faint hum of the air conditioning. I could feel Han's Pokéball vibrating slightly at my side he must've been sensing my excitement and was just as ready as I was. Atlas's Pokéball was secure next to it, and Bodhi's was clipped neatly beside it. My whole team was prepped and rested.
A gym attendant entered the room, giving me a nod. "Michael Kane, it's time."
I exhaled deeply, steadying my nerves as I followed him. The hallway leading to the arena stretched longer than it should have, the muted sounds of the crowd growing louder with each step. When I finally stepped onto the field, the noise hit me like a wave.
The arena was packed. Rows upon rows of spectators filled the stands, their eyes trained on me as I made my way to the challenger's box. I caught glimpses of some familiar faces, trainers from the Rookie Tournament, locals from Petalburg, and even some traveling trainers who must've heard the news.
"Ladies and gentlemen!" boomed the announcer, the same one from the tournament. "Kicking off the day, we have the Rookie Tournament winner, Michael Kane of Littleroot Town, taking on Gym Leader Norman's formidable third badge team!"
The crowd erupted into cheers, and I felt the adrenaline spike through my veins.
Norman stepped into view, his calm and collected presence commanding the arena. He adjusted his gloves, giving me a small nod. "Michael," he said, his voice carrying over the noise. "I hope you're ready. My Pokémon and I won't hold back."
I smirked, trying to match his composure. "Wouldn't have it any other way."
The referee stepped forward, raising both flags. "This will be a three-on-three battle. Only one Pokémon per trainer will be on the field at a time. The Challenger is allowed two substitutions. The battle ends when all three Pokémon on either side are unable to battle. Trainers, are you ready?"
Norman gave a firm nod. "Ready."
I unclipped Han's Pokéball, holding it tightly. "Ready."
The referee's flags dropped. "Begin!"
