Chapter 1: a universe of new beginning
Disclaimer: I don't own Ben 10 or Legend of Korra, just the Ocs.
Earth. Fire. Air. Water. When I was a boy, my father, Avatar Aang. He told me the story of how he and his friends heroically ended the Hundred year war. Avatar Aang and Fire Lord Zuko transformed the Fire Nation colonies into the United States Republic of Nations. In this society, benders and non-benders from all over the world could live and thrive together in peace and harmony. They named the capital of this great land Republic City. Avatar Aang accomplished many remarkable things in his life. Sadly, his time in this world ended, and like the cycle of the seasons, the Avatar Cycle began anew.
Republic City:
It was night in Republic City, the streets illuminated by lights from the buildings and cars. A police car drove through the street, inside was a woman dressed in metal-like armor, her black hair was in a net style, she had a scar on her right cheek. This was Lin Beifong, driving around town on patrol with an exasperated look on her face. Many thoughts were going through her head, Having been made chief not too long ago reminds her of her family trouble. She is bought out of these thoughts by her radio going off.
Dispatcher: "All units have a gang related incident near the non-bender ghetto."
Picking up the receiver Lin replies.
Lin: "This is chief Beifong I'm enroute"
Arriving at the Ghetto she enters an alleyway, taking a look around she see signs of a battle all around. Scorch marks on the wall and ground, large puddles of water and scattered debris of earth. Seeing all this gave her an idea of whose responsible, she soon spots a couple of officers gathering around something, walking over she see what they are standing over, two bodies, one women with long black hair, the other was a boy with short black hair looking to be around ten, both lying motionless. The sight of this brings sadness to Lin before she steals herself.
Lin: "What have you got?"
Officer 1: "Looks like a mugging gone wrong, this has the Triple Threat Triad written all over."
Lin: "Quite the mess for a simple mugging."
Officer 1: "Well the lady didn't go down without a fight, according to witnesses she was a fire-bender. She put up a fight but they eventually got her."
Lin: "What's a fire-bender doing in a non-bender ghetto?"
Officer 2: "From what the witnesses told us she lives around here."
Lin: "What about the kid?"
Officer 1: "Her son, a non-bender, poor kid tried to be a hero, but it just didn't work."
Lin: "All these witnesses and nobody tried to help?"
Officer 2: "There non-benders, what chance did they have against benders?"
Looking down at the bodies, seeing the mother holding her son like she is shielding him, puts a mournful look on Lin's face. With a heavy sigh she steels herself before facing the other officers.
Lin: "(sigh) Alright let's get them out of here."
Hearing that one of the officers kneels down to pick up the boy, but as soon as he touches him the boy starts to cough. This surprises the officer, causing him to fall back.
Officer 2: "Hey! This kid is still alive!"
Hearing that shocks Lin, she begins giving orders.
Lin: "What are you waiting for? Get him to a healer!"
Following the orders of the chief one of the officers carefully picks up the boy and the women. As this happens something falls out of the boy's hand and hits the ground, taking notice Lin walks over and picks it up, she finds that it is a coin with a dragon on each side with a red gem in one dragon's eye and a blue gem in the other. Looking at the coin then back at the boy she puts the coin in her pocket before following the officers. Sometime later we find Lin sitting on a bench at a hospital waiting to hear about the boy's condition, while waiting she looks at the coin she found as she uses her metal-bending to float it around her hand. Just then a door opens as a doctor walks out, Lin stands up to talk to the doctor.
Lin: "Well doctor? How is he?"
Doctor: "We managed to heal the boy's injuries on his chest and eye, he's resting right now, we'll know more in the morning."
Hearing this Lin lets out a sigh of relief and a small smile. Her expression changes to a stoic one when she looks back at the doctor.
Lin: "What about the boy's mother?"
The doctor lets out a deep sigh as his face turn sorrowful before speaking.
Doctor: "I'm sorry we've done all we could but there was nothing we could do."
Saddened by the news Lin looks down, before she could ask anymore questions two officers approach her. She recognizes them as the two officers from the slums.
Officer 1: "Chief"
Lin: "What have you got?"
Officer 2: "We went back to the ghettos and questioned the witnesses like you ordered."
Lin: "What did you find out?"
Officer 1: "The same thing like before, no other family or relatives in the city. As far as anyone knows it's just the boy and his mother."
Officer 2: "Poor kid with no one else he'll most likely end up in an orphanage once he's let out of here, if he doesn't wind up back on the street."
Hearing all this Lin looks over at the room the boy is in then looks at the coin, she ask the doctor if she can go in and see him. After getting approval from the doctor she walks in to find the boy asleep on the medical bed, his left eye is covered in bandages concealing the scar, this makes Lin reach up to her own scar. Walking over to the bed Lin takes a moment to look at the boy, she then places the coin in his hand before walking out of the room. With one last glance she closes the door, back over with the boy while still asleep his hand closes over the coin. Back in the halls Lin rejoins the doctor and officers.
Lin: "Is it alright if I come back tomorrow?"
Doctor: "Yes, he should be healed up and awake by then."
With that said Lin give a light bow before walking off, the two officer watch their chief walk off, looking towards eachother to get an idea about what going on. Neither having an answer both just go about the rest of their day. Back inside the boy's room hours have passed and he is still sleeping, however in his mind he dreams of the incident.
Flashback:
The night of the attack is remembered clearly to the boy, hiding behind a door feeling both fear and worry as he watches his mother standing in front of three men who appear to be from the same gang. All four of them in a battle stance staring each other down, The first to strike is the Earthbender who sends a piece of earth flying at her, the women ducks down to avoid it then launches a blast of fire at the Earthbender making him dodge, as she does the Waterbender attacks next with a stream of water. Seeing this she lifts one of her legs sweeping it across the air sending out a trail of fire to block the water. Finally the Firebender sends a blast of fire, but the woman jumps towards it; she then redirects it towards the Waterbender before delivering a powerful kick to the Firebender, knocking them both to the ground. Before she could react she is hit by a large wave of earth knocking her into a wall. Struggling to get up she sees the Earth thug sends another stone towards her, rolling out of the way she quickly gets back on her feet before she blasts fire towards the earth thug, forcing him back. Suddenly the fire thug jumps in with a blast trying to catch her off guard, but she blocks his attack before repels him with her own. With all three thugs in front of her the mother prepares to advance on them, but finds she unable to. Looking down she finds one of her feet is trapped in ice, Before she could do anything the earth thug strikes her with a large colum of stone, knocking her into a wall. Walking towards her followed by the other two thugs. Not giving her a chance to get up, the Earth thug uses his earthbending to get on her knees then restrains her arms to prevent her from bending. Walking up to her the water thug prepares to finish her, seeing what was about to happen the boy was first afraid, he then shut his eyes then rushed out towards the water thug, biting down on one of his hands, slapping the boy off the water thug shoots a water whip at the boy hitting in the face across his left eye knocking him across the yard. Rubbing his hand the water thug glares at the boy before the fire thug speaks.
Fire thug: "Hey focus we need to wrap things up here, before someone shows up."
Water thug: Shut it! I know that but we also have to take care of the brat, so we might as well do it now."
Everything starts to slow down as the water thug prepares another attack to finish the boy off, seeing all this the mother uses her fire bending to break her restraints and propel herself to her son, wrapping her arms around the boy to shield him from the attack as the water turns to ice stabbing into her back and out of her chest, causing both mother and son's eyes widen in shock before collapsing to the ground. Before the thugs could get close enough to the bodies the sound of police sirens catches their attention.
Fire thug: "We gotta go, don't feel like dealing with cops."
The thugs quickly leave through an alley leaving the mother and son behind, believing them both dead, unaware that they are both still breathing just barely. Feeling her life leaving her the mother looks over to her son who is coughing in pain from the attack, unaware to the thugs she managed to stop the ice from piercing deep into her son's chest. Struggling through the pain the boy looks up at his mother who had a sad smile on her face as she cups her son's face in her hand,
Mother: "(tearfully) I'm sorry this happened, I wanted to be there for you but it looks like the universe has other plans…(coughs blood)"
The son: "(weakly) Mom?"
His mom try saying something but he is unable to hear what she has to say as everything around him fades to black, struggling to reach out to his mother as the darkness begins to envelop her.
The son: "MOM!"
Rising up in his bed in a sweat, after a couple of deep breaths he looks around to see he is in an unfamiliar room, as he tries to figure out how he got here the sound of a door opening catches his attention. Entering the room Lin is surprised to see the boy is awake and looking right at her, quietly he watches her approach him while trying to understand who she is, he recognizes her uniform as the same one the police wear. This tells him she is a police officer, once she reaches his bed she sits down on a chair and looks at him, there is an awkward silence as they stare at each other before Lin speaks.
Lin: "I'm glad to see you're awake."
The boy remains silent and continues to look at her cautiously.
Lin: "(throat clearing) My name is Lin Beifong, I'm one of the police officers who found you and your mother last night."
Hearing mention of his mom cause him to look at her in shock as he is reminded of what happened last night, Looking down at his hand he finds the coin his mom kept, Not taking his eyes off the coin the boy quietly speaks.
The boy: "Where is my mom?"
Upon hearing this Lin looks down, having trouble figuring out how to tell him. Taking notice of this it doesn't take him long to know what happened to his mother.
The boy: "she's gone isn't she?"
Lin: "I'm sorry."
Another awkward silence between the two, the continues to stare at the coin in his hand as tears fall from his eye. With his other hand he lifts it up to his face feeling the bandage over his left eye, Lin seeing all this can't help but feel sorry for him.
Lin: "I never got your name, care to tell me."
Looking up at her he takes a deep breath.
Johnny: "My name is John Li, but everyone calls me johnny. My mom's name is Li Mei, what's going to happen to me now?"
Thinking this over Lin come to a conclusion.
Lin: "That is up to you, but if you're willing, I can help you."
Hearing this he looks to see her extend her hand out to him, giving it some thought he slowly reaches his hand towards her's.
