This last chapter is going to be 3rd person POV
Will POV
"What are we going to do?! What are we going to do?!" Nico screeched over and over while also saying every swear word he knows.
"Nico, Nico," I repeated his name and put my hands on his shoulders trying to get his attention and calm him down because we'd never figure out what to do about this if he lost his mind, "Calm down."
"Calm down! What do you mean calm down?! They're going to show that picture and we will be dead in a few hours, Will"
"Not if we leave right now"
"We don't have anywhere to go, I'm completely broke, and people will wonder at least where you went."
"We were gonna fake our deaths in a few days and leave anyways we just have to do it a little sooner, and by a little I mean now."
Thoughts were circling in my head faster than I could process them. Like we had just been talking about we couldn't trust any of our friends not to turn us in, and even if they agreed to hide us that's putting them in way too much danger. I had my credit card, keys, phone, and the clothes on my back. There wouldn't be time to stop back at my place, we had to get on the road. Once we did that we could figure out where we would go from there.
Nico was back looking out the window, "They're long gone people might already be on the way here."
"Okay let's go, we'll drive through the night till we're far enough to safely stop."
Neither of our anxiety calmed in the slightest the first few hours of the drive. I had to stop to get gas after a little while and it took all of my bravery just to get out of the car, there were gonna be cameras somewhere, we're gonna be tracked down its only a matter of time.
We didn't talk most of the time, not until Nico got a text from Percy.
"They know, people are looking for us. There's prize money for who turns us in."
That wasn't uncommon, in fact, there were always people who were wanted to be turned in for exactly this, just neither one of us ever expected to see ourselves on that list.
"He's asking if we found somewhere safe, and Hazel's house and your apartment have been searched already, they're going to Percy or Jason's next."
"Glad we didn't go to any of them"
"Will, what about our phones couldn't they be tracked?"
"Dammit you're right"
We pulled over on a bridge a few miles later and threw our phones into the water below.
I asked Nico, "Anything else that could identify us?"
"You're license plate, but there isn't much we can do about that without being even more suspicious so we just have to get far enough away so no one will know to recognize it."
The first few days were the hardest, sleeping in the car, and Nico going into a store with no protection but his hood up was nothing short of terrifying, but after the first couple things got a little easier, we couldn't risk contact with anyone yet but maybe when there's been more time for this to die down we will.
Under different circumstances, running around from state to state with Nico would have been amazing, but even now he was really great. His sense of humor kept the whole trip from becoming too dark or scary. He somehow found a way to talk about even this as if it were no big deal, which I knew was hard for him, knowing how his sister died. I hadn't kissed him again since that night, it just seemed like bad luck right now. Besides, there would be time later for all that, right now we needed each other as friends, anything more would complicate things.
After a month had passed all the fear and tension was pretty much gone, being this far from home neither of us felt weird about going into public together. We looked like two normal guys, it's not like we walked around wearing rainbows and holding hands.
We probably shouldn't have gotten that comfortable though, should never have assumed they stopped looking, because one day we got back to the car and it was being emptied and searched by police.
"You sure this is Solace's car?" One of them shouted
"Hundred percent" said another, "tracked his card all the way out here, and look at the license plate"
"I have even better evidence than that" the last one pointed out, "Him and di Angelo are right over there"
I barely even heard Nico say run before we both took off. We ran down the street and into an ally before I grabbed Nico's arm to stop him.
"What are you doing Will we have to keep going" he struggled a little bit before realizing that if I wouldn't run there wasn't a point in him going either.
"They found us Nico, we lost we've been caught, it's over"
"No-"
"I love you Nico"
"No- there's so much- why didn't we-"
"Maybe there's more we could've done and maybe there wasn't but it doesn't matter now okay, I love you just let that be all we have to say"
Officers came flooding down into the ally some grabbing me, others Nico. They were leading us in different directions, I understood that this would be the last time I saw him.
I heard him yelling for me even after he was out of sight, I think I heard him say I love you too, at least I want to believe I did.
I sat in a cell I assume about a day later when I felt it, I don't know how I knew he was gone but I did. Some people last a few weeks without their soulmate, some even a month. Whether there is a correlation between how strong of a match you were and how long the survivor can live after the other is gone no one knows. But I do know this, less than an hour after Nico was killed in his cell I closed my eyes hopefully to join him again in whatever universe there was waiting for us.
