"Hiccup? Your leg?" she turns desperately towards Gobber, a battlefield of emotions sparking in her large blue eyes.

"How? What happened? Will he be ok?"

Before she can get a reply, she gets nudged out of the way by Toothless. He whimpered loudly, nudging at Hiccup's hand as the despair and guilt from not being able to save his Viking from his injuries tore through him.

He sniffed at Hiccup's stump before wrinkling his nose at the pungent odour of burnt flesh mixed with the various herbs from the ointments.

He then spun around, pushing everyone around Hiccup away gently and curled his body around the two injured Vikings, resting his head on Hiccup's chest, and covering them both up under his wings.

"Well, at least they'll be warm" Iðunn chuckles at the pile of black scales covering the two downed Vikings.

"Much warmer than I am!" Snotlout complains, over-exaggerating a shiver.

"Says the one with a Stoker class dragon" Fishlegs mutters.

"Calm it you lot" Hedgelout rolls his eyes, "Now we're all regrouped, we have to figure out how in Helheim are we getting back to Berk."

A couple of the Vikings start to discuss getting back to Berk safely, the best idea thus far being one from Fishlegs' - to all exit out the way Astrid came in.

"Wait, hold on." Astrid says, scrunching her forehead. The rest of the Vikings all look over to where she's sat on the floor by Toothless. Still obviously visible was the emotion in her eyes, but now it had settled on defeat.

"How will exiting out the other side of the island help us? Sure the Jormung may not see us immediately, but Berk is the exact opposite way."

"She's right y'know. An' so we'd still have to go round this side of the island by the Jormung to get home anyway." Sköld affirms.

"We could take a detour in the other direction maybe?" Tuffnut suggests.

"Not with the condition Hiccup's in" Astrid says firmly. "Gró too, they need to get back to Berk to heal."

"We also don't have much in the way of food" Fishlegs adds on, holding his rumbling stomach.

"An' we can't just fly all the way home fast enough to outrun the Jormung, it's undoubtedly faster at swimming than us flying." Sköld agrees.

"Not to mention the Dragon's will probably need to change who's carrying Hiccup and Gró, never mind the rest of us." Ruffnut pipes up.

"And without food or rest, we'd be sitting ducks for the Jormung anyway, no matter how high we tried to fly to avoid it as the dragon's would just tire even quicker."

"The dragon's are going to struggle to make it as it is, and that's if they can pace themselves and take it slowly." Fishlegs' worries.

"We'll go out the front way." Astrid interjects, causing some confused looks.

"I have an idea. It might be our only shot to safely get us all out of here."

"Or what's left of us anyway." Snotlout adds.

Gobber glares at Snotlout, "Go on then lassie, we're all ears."

Sitting astride Stormfly, Astrid takes a deep breath. Inhaling the cold wind as they poke their heads out of the cave mouth awakens them further.

"Well, here goes nothing, right girl?" Astrid says, half smiling more for her dragon's sake than her own.

As they start to take off, Astrid notices the Jormung lounging half-submerged in the bay from earlier.

"It's lying in the bay Snotlout!" She yells back as Hookfang too exits the cave.

Inside the cave, they had managed to coax Toothless into letting them lie Hiccup on the Night Fury's back, securely tying him to the harness with the many convenient buckles and attachment points on Hiccup's armour.

They then got Gró and Sköld up on Barf and Belch's body, the twins riding up by their heads.

"Make sure Gró doesn't fall off Sköld!" Hedgelout says.

"Would'ya try an' make sure Hedgelout doesn't fall off Gobber?" He retorts, causing Gobber to snort in laughter from where him, Hedgelout and Fishlegs were on the back of Meatlug.

Flying high above the cave they were in was Stormfly, watching as Snotlout started his flaming passes by the great serpentine dragon.

With the Jormung not seeming to take much notice in him simply flying by, Snotlout got Hookfang to shoot towards it's exposed back.

This caused it to shift it's weight, but it's head was still below water, with only a small section of it's lower body up on land.

"Wait for it" Astrid told Stormfly as they were gliding high above the submerged Jormung.

Another few shots from Hookfang and the Jormung's head broke the surface of the water, watching as the Monstrous Nightmare flew directly towards it.

"Come on Snotlout" Astrid muttered.

Right as the Jormung was about to strike forwards, Hookfang lit the majority of his whole body on fire, causing the Jormung to pause and jolt it's head back slightly.

Then Hookfang began to climb, gaining more and more altitude with Snotlout hanging on for dear life by the dragon's wiry (and fortunately not aflame) neck.

Seeing this Astrid urged Stormfly into a dive, just as the Jormung looked up to follow where the Monstrous Nightmare was going.

The flaming target would have been setting all kinds of biological dinner bells off in the Jormung's brain with it's thermal sensing pits on its nose, and thus was masking Stormfly up above.

But those flaring pits were exactly the Deadly Nadder's target as they flew down, unleashing a large Magnesium Blast right upon the unsuspecting Jormung's snout.

Spreading her wings at the last moment to catch them as if they were base jumping, Stormfly speeds them away from the thrashing Jormung.

The super heated and bright Magnesium Blast had seared right across the Jormung's face and in it's pits, blinding and disorienting it.

The massive beast roared enormously, before diving into the ocean and rapidly retreating.

Flying past the cave, Astrid beckoned the rest of them out and anyone left standing hopped on Hookfang, allowing them to start the flight back towards Berk.

"First stop will be Crescent's Quake, both Stormfly and Hookfang need a rest after that." Astrid shouts across to the other riders over the wind.

Snotlout came flying through, the last of Hookfang's full body fire going out much to the relief of his passengers, "That's the last time I volunteer to be the bait!"

"It worked Snotlout, quit complaining" Fishlegs told him.

Toothless flew up alongside Stormfly, silent and completely devoid of his usual playfulness. Recognising the determined glint in his eyes, Astrid decided she should talk him down.

"Hey Toothless" Astrid called over, "Listen, I know, I'm very worried about him too, but even you'll struggle to make it back to Berk in your condition. You got hit out of the sky only a few hours ago!"

The Night Fury snorted dismissively.

"Toothless." Astrid said more firmly, before taking another approach.

"By the halls of Valhalla, I promise I will kick your scaly behind from the docks, up to the tallest point on Berk and then all the way back down again if you don't let yourself rest." Astrid crosses her arms and raises her eyebrows and the stubborn dragon.

Once again Toothless snorts in response, only this time it was more mirthful, if a little sarcastic.

Pleased with herself, Astrid settled back down on her saddle, trying not to think about the comfortable saddle's talented creator bundled up safely on Toothless' back.

"Don't worry Hiccup, I'm getting you home."
