Chapter 15

A few days had passed since the conversation with Kaworu, Shinji was in his EVA fighting in the simulators, his body aching from the stress of the battles, even in the simulators he had programmed them to be like reality, to feel like it was a real battle.

Squeezing the trigger of his gun, he watched as the virtual enemy exploded in front of him. He felt his body grow tired as he sat back in his seat. He let out a long sigh as he closed his eyes, still troubled by the nightmare; whenever he closed his eyes, he could see Kensuke and Asuka together.

"Stop it! It was just a bad dream! And even if it were true, she's free to do whatever she wants." Shinji cursed himself at the thought of being so possessive of Asuka, but why did he still feel that way? He had abandoned her and he couldn't blame her for seeking comfort in someone else

Shinji took a deep breath when he saw the success status of his last battle in the simulation, he was feeling better about the virtual battles, but he still wanted to be able to help Kaworu, he wanted to be able to make people see that he wasn't an enemy, but a good person.

"Why don't you take a break kid, you've been there for four hours straight." Koji asked from the other end of the radio, Shinji looked up when he saw the open communication, calmly he replied.

"The enemy doesn't take time off, I want to be prepared."

"Yes, he doesn't, but fainting from training isn't good either." replied the man who had once been the helmsman of the mighty Wunder, but he preferred his new post, it was calmer.

"Training that hard isn't healthy."

"What is healthy in our lives?" Shinji asked no one in particular, his mind screaming to go back home as he thought about the past, closing his eyes tightly to expel the bad images from his mind.

Koji sighed when he heard this, not because he was tired, but because he felt sorry for Shinji, he himself knew what it was like to occupy himself to clear his mind of all the nightmares, so he calmly prepared another one, changing a few parameters so that the simulation would be as different as possible.

"How's he doing?" Mari asked smiling as she approached the monitor, Koji frowned as he saw the pilot approaching.

"Thirty climbs, thirty victories... he doesn't even look tired." Koji said as he typed on the computer, Mari lost the smile on her face as she heard this, she thought that Shinji getting closer to Asuka again would help things a little.

"When will he learn that the past is the past?"

"As soon as you can forgive yourself." Koji said as he began another program.

"I've prepared something else, kid, I hope it's challenging." Koji concluded as he typed on the console, he had changed a few things in the simulation to make it different from the others, but even that was proving difficult, even for the computer it was hard to predict the future.

Mari looked at the simulation starting in front of her, becoming crestfallen at the thought of Shinji's situation, and sadly slapped Koji on the shoulder as he started to leave.

"I hope that changes in the future, I really do."

"You stupid brat..." Asuka complained as she removed her clothes, she had tried to get closer to Shinji these days, but he seemed to be getting more distant, this was making her angry, why wasn't he opening up to her yet? What was bothering him so much? Soon the sound of Mari entering the changing rooms caught her attention.

"Is the brat still training like crazy?"

"Yes, he seems to use it as a form of escape, it reminds me a lot of you." Mari said as she unzipped her suit and headed for the showers, even though she loved the smell of LCL she didn't like when it dried, especially in her hair.

"What do you mean?" Asuka asked as she was offended, her eye patch shining slightly, Mari didn't mind as she started to wash.

"At Wunder, you stayed with him when there was something bothering you, it was practically impossible to talk to you, you locked yourself in the simulator all day." Mari said as she picked up some soap, and Asuka gave her a deadly look.

"It wasn't like that, back then we had to stay in shape, now it's not as stressful as it was back then." Asuka tried to defend herself, but she knew Mari was right, especially the night before the rescue of unit 01 in space.

"What's wrong with the puppy? I thought he'd get a bit better at getting close to you again." Mari asked seriously as she washed her hair, she didn't want to play with Asuka right now, she was seriously worried about Shinji.

"The brat is lost, not just because of the angel but because of something else." Asuka said as she began to wash.

"He asks me a lot about my life in the village, I think he's jealous that we stayed at Kensuke's house, I think he thinks we had something." Asuka thought back to their last conversation, she could see that just at the mention of Kensuke's name, Shinji stiffened.

"The puppy's jealous? But nothing ever happened between you and Kenken? Did it?" Mari asked, already knowing the truth.

Asuka looked at her angrily, because no one realizes that Kensuke is like a brother to her?

"No... for the thousandth time, Kensuke and I never had anything! He's just a good friend to me! He helped me when I needed it!" Asuka said angrily as she squeezed the soap tightly in her hands, Mari smiled at this.

"But it seems that the puppy doesn't see it that way."

"What do you mean?" Asuka asked as she calmed down a bit, she didn't like the idea of Shinji being possessive like that.

"I don't know, it seems to me that he's feeling betrayed by his friend, you know... men have this thing about not picking up each other's girlfriends after break-ups." Mari said as she washed herself more thoroughly.

"But it's never happened, I've already told him that! I don't like feeling pressured! He has to learn to trust people!" Asuka said angrily as she thought about it, she hated the feeling of being untrustworthy.

"He'll realize as soon as this whole thing with the angel gets better, he's just a bit sick... in time it'll pass." Mari said, smiling as she trusted her instincts.

Asuka looked at Mari as she nodded, she was going to have to have a good talk with Shinji about this in the future, he would have to understand that everything she said was true.

"Guard!" Kaworu called out as he approached the glass, he could see the man looking at him intently, but his oath with Shinji had to be kept, he felt his mind burning with the proximity of the next angel.

"What is it?" A male voice called through the intercom, Kaworu could feel the hostility, but it didn't shake him.

"Call Sub-Commander Akagi immediately!" Kaworu ordered, the guard looked into the room when he saw the angel's gaze, but he had orders to call her immediately, with disdain he walked away picking up the phone, Kaworu didn't care about that as he went back to bed and sat down, holding his legs as he did his exercises to keep his angelic part under control.

Kaworu took a deep breath as he concentrated on the AT field approaching him. Sitting on the bed, he closed his eyes, meditating to clear his mind as much as he could.

Breathing deeply as he closed his eyes, feeling that sensation in his body, the same one he felt in the first angelic war, closing his eyes tightly to control his senses to end Lilin life on this planet, feeling the sweat dripping down his face as he struggled to control himself.

He doesn't know how long he stood there breathing, but in the background Ritsuko entered the room, she wanted to know what was so urgent, but she could see Kaworu fighting something inside him, she decided to wait.

Taking a deep breath, he continued to control himself, completely ignoring the presence of Ritsuko staring at him from the other side of the glass.

Tapping a few times on the screen of her personal tablet, she looked at the parameters that the DSS cholera was giving her, frowning as she saw abnormal data, data that Kaworu had never shown her.

"Interesting." She says as she sees Kaworu stiffen and slowly turn his head towards her, seeing his expression change slightly, but she could still see the effort on his face.

"It looks like it's been a difficult morning for you, Nagisa."

Kaworu took a deep breath to calm himself down enough to be able to communicate with this person who was studying him intently, but it didn't bother him.

"A little, but nothing I can't handle... so? What do I owe you for this visit? Another routine examination?"

Smiling falsely at the angel in front of her, the doctor could see that the data was still abnormal, but at least it was the same as before.

"No, but I couldn't help noticing that you seemed conflicted a few minutes ago." The doctor asked analytically, she could notice some changes in the man, but waited for an answer.

Kaworu smiled at this, but decided to open up a little, his brother was getting closer and closer, and he felt another twinge of instinct wanting to open up to him, but he managed to control himself.

"It seems that nothing escapes your eyes, Doctor Akagi."

"This is my job, I have to keep my eyes open at all times." Dr. Akagi said as she clasped her hands in front of her body.

"Anything about our next enemy? You said he was coming a few days ago." The doctor said as she smoked a cigarette, and soon the sound of Kaworu's laughter filled the small room, and she looked at him doubtfully as he smoked.

"What's so funny?"

Kaworu laughed a little more, he had sworn an internal oath to cooperate for Shinji's sake, but it was hard to fight his angel part for these people, running his hands through his hair he slowly calmed down.

"He's getting closer." Kaworu said in a somber voice.

"The angel?" She asked with real interest, her enemies had complete priority.

"Yes, he'll be here any minute." Kaworu says as he closes his eyes when he feels the strong AT field approaching.

"Why didn't you say that before?" Ritsuko spoke slightly annoyed as she approached the glass, she analyzed Kaworu's posture for anything that might tell her he was going to make a move, but the angel did nothing.

Kaworu took a deep breath as he thought about what he was going to say.

"I was trying to calculate the distance, I wanted to give a number but I couldn't, I hope you understand."

"What can you tell me about him?" The doctor asked as she got as close as she could to the thick glass, she didn't like this answer, but at least she seemed sincere. Kaworu closed his eyes.

"I can't, my brothers have the same standard of pitch, unfortunately I can't know who it is, but I can feel that the time has come."

"Right, I'll let Misato know!" Ritsuko knew that the angel was telling the truth, she knew that this was an emotional issue he felt with Shinji. Kaworu slowly sat down on the bed, he thought about how he could help, but inside this cell it was impossible.

Misato was in her living room, a steaming mug of coffee in her hands, she was reading some intelligence reports about groups trying to get close to the pilots, but the people from session two had managed to arrest them before anything else.

KNOCK ON THE DOOR.

"Come in." Said the woman as she continued reading her report.

"Misato, we have a problem." Ritsuko hurried into the room, Misato stopped what she was doing to pay attention to her friend, she would never disturb her if the matter wasn't important.

"What happened?"

"The angel Nagisa has informed me of an imminent attack at any moment, he doesn't seem to be joking." Said the doctor as she became anxious.

"Damn it!" Misato said as she became irritated, she knew that the angels would appear at any moment, but that didn't help when she finally had the information.

"When did he speak?"

"No, it's just that his field is getting stronger by the second, I think it's only a matter of hours or minutes, who knows." The doctor tried to think of a solution.

"Damn, any news about unit 13?" Misato asked as he thought about how he was going to fight.

"No, she's still rejecting Rei or the fake system, but Maya is working on the codes now, who knows, she might have gotten something." Ritsuko explained, but before she could say anything else they both heard her communication device ringing in her pocket, both women picked it up as they already knew what it meant.

"What's wrong?" Misato asked in her battle mode, on the other end of the line Hyuga reported frightened to think that he had made a mistake by not noticing the enemy approaching

"Ma'am! The MAGIs have detected a faint orange pattern on the west coast! It appeared all of a sudden! " Hyuga reported startled on the other end of the line, Misato growing colder as her personality shifted into battle mode.

"Call the pilots now! I want to implement security level 01 and I'm on my way to the command center." The woman hung up as she left her office; both women exchanged a look, already knowing what they had to do.

"What have we got?" Misato asked as she approached her team at the WILLE command center, having already been updated by the tip the angel was giving her.

"Enemy was detected a few minutes ago! Appeared on radar suddenly!" Hyuga reported upon receiving the first reports.

"Faint orange pattern confirmed, MAGIs have no doubt it's an angel, readings getting stronger by the second!" Sumire reported.

"I've just notified the authorities to evacuate the civilian population." Tama reported as she turned and saw Misato's back, she nodded at that, her team still had the best timing in the world.

"Teams signaling that all defense material is ready to be deployed." Sumire spoke calmly.

"What about the EVAs?" Misato asked calmly, but her eyes never left the screen showing the enemy in a red dot.

"They've already been notified and are on their way to their EVAs, pilot Ikari was training on the simulators, he's already waiting for orders." Maya reported professionally on seeing the images and status of the powerful machines.

"Makinami and Shikinami are changing again, Shikinami wasn't happy about having to take another shower after the battle."

"Great, as soon as we have the first images we'll implement the EVAs, any news on unit 13 with Rei?" Misato finally turned to look at Ritsuko who was looking at some information on her personal tablet.

"No, the unit still rejects it, I'm beginning to believe that it really only works with Kaworu." Ritsuko said in frustration as she thought about it, nothing could make that unit work.

"That shouldn't be a problem, we'll still have three fully operational EVAs, but keep Rei ready in case anything changes." Misato ordered as she turned her sight back to the home screen.

"We have visual contact! On the main screen." Shigeru reported as he pressed a few buttons, everyone looked at the main screen when they saw the image of the angel, frowning at its strange shape.

"It looks like... he looks like a white crown shape." Hyuga reported on seeing the enemy.

"So far we don't have any more information about his energy source, the core must be somewhere inside him." Ritsuko said as she noticed some of his details.

"Deploy the EVAs as close to their route as possible! Equip them with long-range firearms and await orders." Misato ordered with authority as she saw the large ring getting closer and closer, she clenched her hands as she began to get anxious, a feeling that she was beginning to lose control.

Shinji was in unit 01 when it was launched, looking sideways he could see the city in the background, next to him unit 02 and 05 stopped.

"Hello, puppy! I hope you're not tired from training so hard." Mari said cheerfully as she felt the pre-battle adrenaline coursing through her body.

"I'm fine Mari." Shinji said as he looked ahead, knowing that the enemy would appear in front of him at any moment.

"Do we know anything about him yet?" Asuka asked in her cold voice, she was in battle mode now.

"Negative, MAGIs can't make a conclusive prediction, so we have to be cautious." Hyuga replied, and then Misato joined the conversation.

"As soon as the angel is within arms reach, I want you to open fire, avoid physical contact at all costs."

Shinji nodded at this, slowly he looked forward as he squeezed his controls tightly, letting his eyes search for the enemy, slowly he watched the birds fleeing from something on the mountain.

"I think he's coming."

"I'm going to the left flank!" Mari said as she started to move away, Asuka did the same leaving Shinji in the middle.

"You heard Misato, we're not letting him near the EVAs." Asuka ordered as she walked away, Shinji felt his anger growing by the moment, it was because of these creatures that his life had become a living hell, raising his rifle he adjusted his aim, it was just a matter of waiting.

Armisael slowly approached the city, he could feel the bond of the Lilin sin in this place, he observed his enemies waiting for him, calmly he approached.

"Here!" Shinji spoke as he squeezed the trigger of his EVA, and could feel the jolts on the EVA's arm as the shots rang out across the Tokyo 03 plains.

Armisael had no problem seeing the shots coming towards him. He calmly changed his form into a long cylinder and easily dodged the shots Shinji was firing at him.

"Damn shape shifter!" Shinji said as he tried to change his aim, but his shots weren't even coming close to hitting the enemy.

"Let's take him by surprise!" Mari said as she took aim with her sniper rifle, and with strong bursts she fired, seeing the big shot heading in her direction, she smiled as she saw little reaction from the enemy.

"I don't think you're that expert." Mari spoke arrogantly as she waited for the big damage, but her eyes widened as she saw her shot easily avoided.

"What!?"

Armisael quickly changed his target, heading straight for the pink giant. Mari's eyes widened at the sight of the great white clasp heading her way, she tried to change her position, but the angel was quicker.

Raising her tail just below the pink giant, Mari felt a heavy thud on her waist as she was flung away, but he quickly caught her in a strong embrace like a snake crushing its enemy.

"Ha!" Mari shouted as her ribs ached.

"Four eyes!" Asuka shouted as she launched herself towards the enemy, grabbing her knives she ran as far as she could, Shinji watched the pink giant being crushed, pointed his guns at him and pulled the trigger, but just like before, the shots had no effect.

Asuka flew with a powerful leap, pointing her knives downwards and using all her strength to penetrate her enemy's skin.

"Die!" She shouted as she plunged her knife in, but her eyes widened as not even sparks came out when her sharp blade slipped through the tough skin.

"What!?" She tried again, but her knife didn't even scratch her enemy's strong white skin.

Mari struggled to keep control of her body, but the lack of oxygen was starting to mess with her mind. She slowly looked around as she saw herself in another place, it was strange, but recognizable.

"Where am I?" Mari found herself in her old office, she knew what it was, it was her old life, slowly a person entered the room, her eyes tearing up as she realized who this person was.

"Yui!" Mari shouted happily as she ran towards the woman, but slowly she realized something was wrong with her eyes, once happy and kind, now they were cold and animalistic.

"Hello Mari." Armisael said, smiling sadistically.

"Makinami's psychographs are firing! The angel is doing something to her mind!" Maya reported as she began to see the pilots' statuses.

"Cut the sign!" Ritsuko ordered.

"We can't get into the systems! The angel seems to have blocked our access!" Hyuga shouted in fear as he tried every command he knew.

"Asuka! Shinji!" Misato ordered as she placed her hands on the panel.

"Get Mari away from the angel at any cost! He's attacking her mind!"

Shinji realized that he wasn't going to help with his gun, and promptly ran towards Mari and the angel, using his machine gun as a weapon, Shinji promptly went to Asuka's side as she tried to deliver a strong blow.

"Mari!" Asuka shouted in fear as she received only static over the radio, she struggled to do any damage, but her attacks were proving completely useless, next to her Shinji rushed in using his weapon as a kind of iron bar, but his attack proved useless.

He felt the people getting in his way, Armisael, using his free tail he pushed the two giants away, he would have smiled if he could but he turned his attention to his prey.

"You're not Yui." Mari said as she walked away, but the creature came even closer, and another woman materialized beside her, another woman Mari had longed to seek out.

"What's wrong? Why do you feel this way? Isn't that what your heart wants most? To be with them again?" Armisael walked further into Yui's form, Mari felt her body freeze.

"Just allow it to come true." Armisael tried to touch Mari's face, feeling a wave of courage run through her body, closing her fist tightly she struck a powerful blow to the face of the person she loved most.

Losing his smile, the angel glared at Mari as he growled, knowing she wouldn't cooperate, and spoke angrily.

"Insolent Lilin!"

Mari closed her eyes as she tried to free herself, feeling a pain in the back of her head as she no longer allowed the angel to use her memories against her.

"Get out!"

Mari opened her eyes inside the entry plug again, she felt the grip around her waist getting tighter and tighter, she struggled to breathe.

"Get off me, you damn thing!"

From outside the sound of crushing could be heard, Mari struggled to get free, but the grip was too strong, hearing a metallic cracking sound she watched her armor crack as if it were nothing, using her knife again she tried to open a gap, but nothing happened.

Asuka ran towards Mari again, but just as before Armisael didn't allow it, every meter she gained was hundreds she lost as other tentacles pushed her away.

"Brat, do something!" Asuka shouted in the hope that Shinji might do something, but he wasn't much different from them.

"I'm trying!" Shinji shouted as he launched himself, he felt one of the tentacles coming towards him, he tried to dodge it, but he felt it when his abdomen was taken by the creature, looking at his hands he could see small veins starting to grow, he felt a pain running through his body with every centimeter the creature advanced.

"What's that!?" He groaned in pain as he felt his mind going haywire, but he would fight to keep control, using all the strength he could he picked up Mari's sniper rifle from the ground.

Struggling to maintain control, he managed to hold off a small part of the enemy by placing the muzzle of the gun directly on the monster's skin, roaring as he pulled the trigger and the ammunition hit him directly.

"Die!"

Asuka was on her feet again, the grotesque crunching sound coming from Mari was making her ill, but her eyes observed Shinji's point-blank shots not even scratching his enemy's skin, what could she do?

"Misato! Nothing's working!"

"The Makinami pilot won't last long!" Shigeru reported.

"Serious damage to the internal structures of unit 5! If it continues like this, the nerve damage will be too great!" Maya reported upon receiving the damage reports.

"Unit 01 beginning to show signs of angelic contamination! Enemy penetrating the first layers!" Tama explained anxiously.

Misato clenched her hands as she saw that things were bad, if a shot from that rifle wasn't hurting her nothing would, angrily she turned and started to leave, in the background Ritsuko watched everything cautiously, already knowing what she was going to do.

Kaworu could feel what was happening outside, he could feel the suffering of the Lilim who were at his brother's mercy, he felt his heart ache knowing that Shinji was suffering, closing his eyes he struggled to keep control, but before he could do anything else, the red lights went out, as did his choker.

"You go outside and help them." Misato spoke as she opened the cell door, her cold stance facing the being she hated most in this world, but for the sake of Shinji and the others she was going to do it.

"Why?" Kaworu asked as he stood up, he could feel that his angelic powers were stronger without the restraint, Misato took a deep breath as she thought about the last conversation she had with Shinji.

"Shinji-kun trusts you, so I don't want to think otherwise." The woman replied coolly, but Kaworu could see behind all the masks that she was worried about all the pilots.

"Okay, I'll help."

"Well, I've already had unit 13 prepared, when you arrive it will be ready, just go outside, kill the creature! And come back!" Misato ordered as she threw a plug suit at Kaworu.

"I'll do my best." Kaworu replied as he thought of Shinji, feeling a strange sensation in his mind, he knew who Armisael was, this was going to be difficult.

"Damn you!" Asuka shouted as she launched herself at the enemy, using her progressive knives she hit with all her might, she hated this feeling of being useless, looking to the side she could see unit 1 starting to have veins popping out in its armor.

"What do I do?" She whispered to herself as she felt helpless.

"There... there... there" Mari struggled to breathe as she felt her abdomen being crushed inch by inch, ready to lose consciousness she felt her body being lifted into the air.

"Let her go!" Shinji struggled to get off one last shot before the pain in his head got even stronger, losing the fight against it he finally let go, with a loud thud the heavy rifle fell to the ground, bringing his hands to his face he screamed in pain as he felt the angels trying to enter his mind, but as soon as it started, the pain stopped, opening his eyes to see that the small veins were gone from his body, Shinji felt his EVA falling to the ground on his knees.

Raising his head, he saw unit 13 standing in the background with a rifle in its hands. The shot hadn't caused any damage, but the creature knew who was piloting the EVA.

"Kaworu?" Shinji spoke weakly when he saw his enemy turning to his friend.

"I hope you're all right, dear Shinji." Kaworu said happy to see that he could help, just ahead of him he could see the pink giant writhing in pain, thinking about how he could help, but nothing came to mind.

"Brother, please stop." Kaworu pleaded in his mind, hoping to get his brother to stop, but he himself knew it was impossible.

"Traitor." The thing spoke across the AT field to Kaworu as he forced his grip even tighter on Mari, a final move and used all his strength, his eyes widening as he saw the pink giant being easily broken in half, both parts falling to the ground like a lifeless rag doll.

"MARI!" Asuka ran towards Mari when she saw her EVA in two halves, she knew that must have hurt a lot, feeling afraid of losing her family she tried to contact her by radio, but only received static.

"She's alive, Asuka! Only unconscious! Focus on the enemy!" Misato's voice flooded the communication systems, Asuka felt angry at the thought that they were just tools, soon the conversation with Mari about the fake system came back, did Misato know? Turning around, she saw the source of her anger approaching Unit 13.

"I'M GOING TO KILL YOU!" Shouted the redhead as she ran with all the speed of her unit, grabbing what was left of her knives, she jumped hoping to penetrate the weapon, feeling her eye patch glowing brightly with each passing second, her contamination aching more and more for control.

"AH!" Tried Asuka as she felt the blade slip through her enemy's skin, turning her body and acting angry, Armisael had no trouble repelling the enemy, using his now free tail, he easily deflected Asuka's blows by hitting her chest throwing her away, approaching like a snake he grabbed her by the neck, squeezing with all his strength, Asuka felt her neck starting to hurt.

Shinji finally managed to come to his senses, he stood up when he saw Asuka being swung like a doll through the air, roaring he jumped towards her and held onto the tentacle, feeling the pain returning to his body from the contact, it seemed that the angel wanted something to do with him.

"Let...let... let go!" Asuka tried to speak, but the grip on her neck was too strong, the connection was taking its toll.

Raising his gun, Kaworu with pain in his heart began firing rounds at the enemy who was now concentrating on Asuka and Shinji, seeing his shots bounce off his skin, this gun was useless.

Running towards them, Kaworu jumped on Unit 02's back to try to loosen Armisael's strong grip.

"He's very strong!" Shinji fought the pain again, but he had to help Asuka, Kaworu was doing the same on the other side.

"We won't be able to let go! I'll trigger the emergency ejection!" Kaworu said hurriedly as he searched for the opening.

"No! We need her!" Shinji said as he felt his connection getting even weaker.

"Just two EVAs won't do it!"

"If he breaks her neck we won't have any more pilots!" Kaworu spoke hurriedly, he knew Mari was lucky, Shinji watched the red giant go limp when a popping sound flooded the room, he knew it was that sound, unit 2's neck had broken.

Losing interest in the dead monster, Armisael threw unit 13 and 01 away as he shook himself, watching Shinji and Kaworu fly away respectively, but still kept unit 2 in his grip.

Kaworu stood up when he saw the enemy waiting for them in defense mode.

"He's not even using his AT field."

"The thing won't get hurt!" Ritsuko said fearfully

"We haven't located the core yet!" Shigeru and Maya said as they analyzed the enemy.

"Damn you!" Misato realized that this was going from bad to worse.

Kaworu closed his eyes as he had an idea, but it wouldn't please the people around him, so he picked up his gun again and took aim at the enemy.

"Come to me..."

Shinji watched Kaworu shoot at the enemy, observing a huge tentacle heading in his direction, his eyes widening as he saw it enter Unit 13's belly.

"Kaworu!"

Kaworu opened his eyes as he saw himself in the void, and could see that this was the world he knew so well.

"Hello, brother."

"Why did you betray your people?" Armisael spoke angrily to Kaworu, how could such a pure being lower himself to the Lilim?

Kaworu said smiling, even he wasn't sure what had changed his mind.

"Have you ever stopped to watch?" He asked smiling, Armisael looked at him doubtfully, not understanding the meaning, Kaworu let out a laugh at seeing this scene.

"The Lilim are imperfect creatures, that's the secret... them being imperfect makes them perfect brother, open your eyes please, see what they've built!" Kaworu said anxiously, thinking mainly of the music.

"They built it? They're destroying everything they touch! How can there be perfection in sin!" Armisael said, still angry, and Kaworu smiled even more.

"If you only look at the bad things, but try to see the good things? Their love, the determination of the righteous? Creativity? These things border on the divine, brother, not everyone wants evil, can't you see that?"

"I can only see sin, and we will be able to purify this land, even if I fall, others will see until we have the final victory, a world free from the sin of the Lilim." Armisael spoke with determination, nothing could change his mind.

Kaworu looked down as he was crestfallen, really crestfallen.

"So you're not going to give me any other choice, brother."

"You can't fight me Tabris, you've seen what's happening out there, you know that victory will be mine, it's only a matter of time before I do what you refuse to do." Armisael spoke arrogantly as he raised his hand.

"I'm going to kill them both and then finish my duty." Armisael left the world as he came back to reality, turning his focus to unit 01.

"Exactly." Kaworu said as he began to concentrate, pushing his AT field towards unit 01, looking for a particular soul, being able to see it looking out, just as a pilot would.

"Yui?" He asked, smiling.

"What do you want?" Yui replied angrily, she could feel her son's desperation, his brilliant mind trying to find a solution.

"Can you do me a favor?"

Shinji could see the giant with his arms outstretched, the huge tentacle entering his belly, but nothing was happening. Ordering his EVA to get up, he grabbed his knife, staggering in pain towards his enemy, but before he could strike another blow, Armisael's tentacles caught him, and he felt pain coursing through his body.

Inside Unit 01, Kaworu was talking to Yui, she could see her son's suffering and was getting angry.

"Speak up! My son needs me!"

"I know, I have an idea, but I'm going to need your help." Kaworu spoke calmly.

"What is it?" Yui asked fearfully, but deep down she knew what it was.

"I need you to lock down unit 01, don't let Shinji intervene." Kaworu spoke calmly and sadly.

"What?" Yui asked in confusion.

Shinji stood up as best he could, he could see all the EVAs trapped in Armisael's death grip, but soon the pain stopped, looking ahead he could see Kaworu with his arms open, the angel entering his body.

"Kaworu? What are you doing?"

"What is necessary." He says as he reverses his field to himself.

"What's he doing!?" Misato asked as she saw the angel being absorbed by Unit 13, her body screaming in fear that an impact was going to happen.

"He's reversing his field! He's pulling the angel to himself!" Ritsuko replied as she got an idea of what the angel was thinking.

"Damn."

(*)

"Kaworu! Stop!..." Shinji tried to move, but his EVA didn't respond, it was as if he was paralyzed on the ground.

"What?"

"I'm sorry Shinji, but it's the only way." Kaworu spoke as he absorbed all of the angel, a hole in his belly showing the initial point of impact, looking to the side, he could see the motionless body of Unit 02 now safe on the ground, smiling as he knew she could help Shinji better than him.

"I can kill him, but it will come at a cost." Kaworu says as he turns in his seat, fearlessly reaching for a small lever, with a metallic sound he pulls it.

"Kaworu please! Stop it!" Shinji struggled to move his EVA, but nothing happened, he could feel a strong sense of sadness inside his EVA.

"Eject the input plug!" Misato ordered as she saw the self-destruct sequence being activated, she hated the angels, but this wasn't the best strategy.

"No! If I do that, my field will fall apart, the angel will escape!" Kaworu's voice flooded the control room, Misato looked at the screen and at her companions without knowing what to do.

"Kaworu please, we can find another way!" Shinji spoke desperately as he tried to control his EVA, but it wouldn't move.

"That's the only way, I can only do it once, it would be worse to have to choose who lives... I'm fine with it Shinji, I really am." Kaworu smiled as he looked at the glowing core of Unit 13, he could feel the angel inside him trying to break free, but he wasn't going anywhere.

"You can be happy around the people who care about you, I think my part is done, I thought that keeping you away from them would help you, but I was wrong ... so please be happy."

"Kaworu please!" Shinji shouted with tears in his eyes, his EVA returning to his most faithful friend in this world, he could see unit 13 glowing and moving strangely.

"Misato! Please!" The man begged with all his might, but nothing happened.

Kaworu, knowing it was any minute, looked at Unit 01 as he spoke directly to Shinji, and with great sadness he spoke.

"You know I care a lot about you Shinji, I love you too much to do this for a better future, your future and please... live the best life you can and thank you for being part of my world... thank you so much." Kaworu said as he closed his eyes, he didn't fear death.

"Kaworu please!" Shinji shouted as he saw the giant glowing bright white, blinded by the light he only heard the sound of the loud explosion that took over the room, feeling his EVA falling backwards with the shockwave that went through all the fields, Shinji screamed in pain as he felt his friend leaving.

"NO!."
