Chapter 41 - Mipha's Diary Lost Pages

Summary: Astra gives the pages from Mipha's diary she found inside Ruta to King Dorephan and Prince Sidon.

"But this is amazing, Astra!" exclaimed Sidon with his customary exuberance. "A truly remarkable discovery!"

It was evening in Zora's Domain as Astra met with King Dorephan and Prince Sidon for dinner. Queen Zelda had asked Astra to inspect Divine Beast Vah Ruta, and Astra's return to the domain for dinner afterward was expected. But her discovery of some missing pages from Mipha's diary inside Ruta was not.

King Dorephan was as thrilled as Sidon, of course, but behaved differently. Astra watched him as he held the newly found pages and stared at them. He seemed eager to read them, yet hesitant too. Perhaps he was mentally preparing himself for the memories they would stir up, thought Astra.

Astra had noticed from her earlier visits with King Dorephan and Prince Sidon how much they loved to hear about Mipha. But in the end, Mipha was still lost to them, gone forever from their lives. Was her discussing Mipha helping or hurting? On balance, she thought it was helping, and they said so themselves by way of encouragement. But perhaps it was a bit of both.

"Thank you from the depths of my heart for this, Astra," said King Dorephan finally, realizing he was neglecting his company. "We suspected some of my dear Mipha's diary might be missing from the portion we recovered in East Reservoir Lake. But, of course, we did not know where the missing pages might be or if any of them had even survived."

"I'm happy I could find them," said Astra.

"Mipha began keeping her diary safe inside Ruta once she began training to become its pilot," said King Dorephan. "As she grew older, she became more concerned about keeping her diary private and away from prying eyes. Her teacher, Muzu, for one, disliked Hylians and would have been upset to learn of her feelings for your father. And I'm sure Mipha would have also been embarrassed to have your father read it."

"I can vouch for that based on things I learned later," said Astra.

She recalled the story she had heard several times about her father using knowledge of the Champions' diaries to convince them that, despite his memory loss, he was not delusional but had indeed traveled back in time.

"But now I think merging these new pages with the ones we already found makes the most sense. Sidon, would you see if Laflat is available and ask her to come here if she is?"

"At once, Father," said Sidon as he left to find Laflat.

"Laflat is our Royal Secretary and is in charge of things such as historical records," explained King Dorephan. "Her father once ran an armor shop, which sadly went out of business long ago. Hopefully, Laflat can put the diary in order while we have dinner."

A moment later, Laflat returned with Sidon.

"Your Majesty, you wished to see me?" said Laflat.

"Yes, Laflat. Oh, have you already met Princess Astra?"

"I know of Her Highness, but we have not spoken," said Laflat. "Pleased to meet you, Highness."

"Pleased to meet you too, Laflat," said Astra.

"The amazing news, Laflat, is that Princess Astra has recovered some more pages of Mipha's diary from inside Ruta," said King Dorephan. "I was hoping you could work on merging them with the pages we already found as best you can. However, I understand there may be some uncertainty about the correct order."

"That is wonderful news, and I will do my best," said Laflat.

King Dorephan handed the newly found pages to Laflat, and she left after taking the existing portion of Mipha's diary with her.

"Now, let us have dinner," said King Dorephan.

They all sat down to eat, and Astra was served a cooked Hyrule Bass.

"Delicious fresh fish, thank you," said Astra after swallowing a bite. "But I have been thinking. I wonder why my father did not find the missing pages inside Ruta years ago."

"Ah, well, if you knew more about your father's visits to Ruta, then you would not be so surprised, Astra," said Sidon.

"What do you mean?"

"Your father only entered Ruta twice," said Sidon. "The first time was on his own to defeat the blight creature that had taken possession of Ruta. The second time was with Zelda shortly after Ganon's defeat."

"I see," said Astra after swallowing another bite of fish.

"On Link's first visit to Ruta, he was eager to finish his mission and move on to the next Divine Beast. So, he had no time to explore Ruta thoroughly. Besides, Mipha's diary may have remained out of sight on his first visit, only becoming dislodged and exposed when Ruta passed through East Reservoir Lake and climbed up to its target position."

"That makes sense. But what about my father's second visit to Ruta?" asked Astra.

"Did Link never tell you about it, Astra?"

"No, never," said Astra. "About some things that happened, my father preferred to remain silent, and we did not wish to stir up painful memories."

Astra recalled her father did not like to speak about what happened in this timeline. And even shortly before she left, he preferred to only speak of things that could be of use to her once he realized returning here might be her fate.

"Ah, I see," said Sidon, nodding his head. "Well, let me tell you about his second visit to Ruta, which I learned from his friend, Bazz. As I said, it occurred shortly after Ganon's defeat. Link came here with Zelda, arriving in the late afternoon. I saw them approach across the Great Zora Bridge as I stood on the balcony. They first stopped at Mipha's statue and spoke briefly, but I was too far away to make out any words. Of course, Zelda had not seen my sister's statue in person and no doubt wanted to pay her respects. Then they came to the throne room to speak with Father, and I joined them. Zelda expressed her heartfelt condolences for my sister's loss, and we spent the rest of the day talking about all that happened, including my sister's bravery. It made my sister come alive again in my thoughts to hear her spoken about by another who knew her."

"Yes, it did for me, too," said King Dorephan. "Zelda spoke kindly of Mipha and described some occasions they were together that Link had forgotten about after he lost his memory. "

"Yes, Link seemed to hang on every word spoken about Mipha," said Sidon. "Anyway, Zelda said she and Link intended to inspect Ruta the following day after breakfast, as Ruta had stopped working, and she needed to know why. Father insisted that a guard accompany them, for monsters were still dangerous back then. The guard who volunteered was your father's childhood friend, Bazz. Bazz went as Captain of the guards but also said he wanted to accompany Link as a friend and spend some time with him. So, the three of them went off together."

"I remember and wondered then if they would find anything belonging to Mipha on their visit," said King Dorephan.

"When they returned later that day," continued Sidon, "Zelda explained that one terminal inside Ruta had gone offline, and she had reactivated it, so all was well. Zelda clearly seemed keen on keeping Sheikah Technology in good working order. Anyway, she and Link then left to return to Kakariko Village, but later I spoke with Captain Bazz. Please forgive my long and rambling preamble, and let me describe what was said."

"I trust the journey back and forth from Ruta was uneventful, Captain," said Sidon.

"No enemies encountered, Prince Sidon, but not completely uneventful," said Bazz.

"What happened?"

Bazz hesitated, then spoke up.

"I know you and Link are close, and you treat him as family, Prince Sidon. But I respectfully request that you not repeat what I tell you beyond those you deem necessary."

"Very well, but now please tell me. Your words make me even more eager to learn what happened."

"It's about Link," said Bazz. "First, you should understand that Link never likes to show any fear or weakness. Even as a young child, he refused to cry when he got hurt. And after he was older and chosen by the sword, he only grew more determined to show no weakness. He felt he had to live up to being the strong, brave hero expected of him. Anyway, when we reached Ruta on the plateau, he and Zelda boarded the Divine Beast while I waited outside. However, a short time later, Link emerged alone and began throwing up. I rushed to his side."

"Link, are you okay? Is it something you ate?"

"Sorry, Bazz … no, it's nothing I ate," said Link between deep breaths as he tried to recover his composure.

"What is it then?"

I could see that Link was wiping his eyes though he kept his face averted from me.

"I told Zelda I felt dizzy … from Ruta's tilt," said Link. "But it wasn't that either."

I waited for Link to continue when he felt able to.

"It was Mipha."

"Princess Mipha?"

"I last saw her … inside Ruta."

Then Link broke down again and couldn't continue.

"It's okay to let your emotions out, Link," I said as I hesitantly put my arm around his shoulder.

I wasn't sure Link would allow me to comfort him like that, but he did. After another few moments, he was better able to speak.

"I've forgotten so much, but I've been thinking a good deal about Mipha lately. We were supposed to spend time together here now that Ganon is gone. And when Zelda and King Dorephan spoke of Mipha at length yesterday, it brought back more memories of her. And not just memories, Bazz, but feelings, too. I had trouble sleeping last night thinking about her. Then, returning to Ruta today, I recalled my last visit: how happy she was to see me again, how even as a spirit, she wanted to protect me by giving me her healing power. And then she said goodbye, urging me to save Zelda. I felt sick inside. I had to leave and get some fresh air."

"All of your friends here remember how close you and Mipha were," I said. "I think it's good you remember it too. And it's perfectly normal that you would be deeply affected by her loss."

Finally, after another minute or two, Link straightened up, took a deep breath, wiped his eyes one last time, and returned to his old self.

"Thanks for comforting me, Bazz. But please don't say anything to anyone," said Link.

Just then, Zelda emerged from Ruta.

"Ruta's back in working order again!" said Zelda proudly as she approached us. "But I hope you're feeling better, Link. I agree it was dizzying inside Ruta with it tilted upward like that. But the way you soar through the air on your paraglider, I never expected you to suffer from vertigo."

"I'm all better now, thanks," said Link, who seemed eager to change the subject.

Then we began our journey back here to the domain. The whole time all Zelda spoke about was what she wanted to do to restore Hyrule, including seeking help from our architects. Link was quiet and seemed grateful that Zelda was doing all the talking. Anyway, I'm glad I went with them and was there to comfort my dear friend in his time of need.

"That's what I learned from Captain Bazz," said Sidon. "And until now, I have shared the story only with Father."

"That's interesting, and no, my father never spoke of that incident," said Astra. "But I know very well that he has a deeply emotional side, which surprises those who think of him as only a warrior. So I can see why he would likely not have noticed Mipha's diary, even if it was visible back then. And Zelda was likely too preoccupied with restoring Ruta to do much exploration."

Just then, Laflat returned.

"I have put the pages in order as best I could, Majesty, and numbered the extracts," said Laflat, handing the book to King Dorephan.

"Thank you, Laflat, you are a wonder," said King Dorephan.

Laflat bowed and left.

"Thank you both for a delicious dinner and for making me feel so welcome here again," Astra said. "Now, I should excuse myself, as I am sure you are both eager to read the missing pages from Mipha's diary in private."

"Come, Astra, we are all family here!" said King Dorephan. "Let us read it together now. I would be amazed if it did not contain more about your father, perhaps things you might wish to learn."

And with that, King Dorephan began to read.

Entry #1

I have a diary now! Mother surprised me with it today as her gift.

"You are old enough now for this, sweetheart, and it will give you pleasure to read it later in life when time has passed, and memories have faded," said Mother as she handed me the book full of empty pages for me to fill in. "I am so proud of you, Mipha! And now I want you to record all the special moments in what I know will be part of your amazing life."

We hugged and kissed, and I promised her I would do as she asked and forever cherish her thoughtful gift.

Entry #2

Mother is gone! It happened so suddenly, and I do not even know how. Father cannot speak of it, for his heart is broken like mine. We comfort each other as best we can. Poor little Sidon may well have no memory of her. He is still so small. Though I can never fully succeed, I must do my best to make up for Mother's loss to my dear brother. In this way, I will help both Father and him.

I cannot write more about Mother's passing … it is still too painful. But I will honor her memory by doing as she asked and keeping this diary.

"A sad way to start her diary," sighed King Dorephan.

He paused for a moment, and no one wanted to interrupt his thoughts. Then King Dorephan continued.

Entry #3

At the request of Hyrule's King, a group of outsiders came to greet us at the domain. One of them was a Hylian child of only about four years of age. His name was Link. He made quite a first impression. He was curious and full of energy, with a ready smile. Are all Hylian children that way? One thing that surely sets him apart is his swordsmanship, which I hear is exceptional. He has even bested adults. He must be somewhat reckless, however, as he was covered in bruises. Wishing to be helpful, I healed his wounds for him. It must have been his first time seeing healing magic as he looked up at me with big, round eyes. It was…adorable.

"This next part looks to be another one of the missing sections," said King Dorephan.

Entry #4

I have been helping Sidon to improve his swimming, and I am pleased with how much progress he has made. I remember how Mother taught me: lovingly yet firmly. She would always urge me to do my best and say she believed in me no matter what. I miss her so very much! I have striven to do the same as her with Sidon. When I compliment him on his progress, he gives me that cute flash of his teeth and the pump of his arm! He's so adorable!

I know I must help Father, but he insists I not neglect my own studies and makes sure I keep all my lesson appointments with Muzu and Seggin. "Mother would have wanted that," Father says, and I know he is right. Seggin encouraged me on my spearmanship today, saying I am growing into the beautiful trident Dento made for me. I assume he meant my skill, not my height, as I am still going through my endless growth spurt. Why must we Zoras take forever to reach adult height?

Entry #5

A curious thing happened today. While on my way to a lesson, I was surprised to see the little Hylian boy named Link back in the domain once again. He was playing with three Zora children, two of whom I recognized as the sons of Trello and Seggin.

When I mentioned this later to Father, he explained that Link's father had been assigned as Hylian army representative to our kingdom and would visit from time to time. Father added Link had also lost his mother, so his father needed to travel with his young son wherever he went. I was saddened to hear this, of course, and I am glad Link has at least found some playmates to have fun with. I should do my part to look after him as well.

Since this means Link will often visit the domain, perhaps I should offer to teach him to swim so he can better play in the water with his new friends. I should also explain to his playmates that they need to look out for Link in the water. Though it is my nature to help everyone, why do I feel so especially protective of Link?

Entry #6

Sidon's swimming and coordination continue to improve, and I know Father is pleased.

"I should be the one doing this for Sidon, not taking away your free time, sweetheart," Father said, but I told him I enjoyed spending time with my little brother and seeing him grow.

Speaking of little brother, Sidon's tail fin has gotten quite long for his age, and that is an early sign he will be very tall someday. It's hard to imagine that now!

Oh, Link agreed to let me teach him to swim, and I took him to East Reservoir Lake, where the water is calm. At first, I feared I had been too ambitious, as it quickly became clear Hylians cannot swim the way we Zoras do. At first, I was at a loss about how to proceed, but eventually, we figured out what to do. Link was very good-natured the whole time, thanked me for my help, and thought he might benefit from another lesson soon. He is a remarkable little boy!

Entry #7

I healed several more of our soldiers today, something I am doing more and more of lately. I am happy to put my gift to good use, of course. But monster attacks are occurring more frequently now around the domain, which concerns Father and all of us. I think the incident affected my mood because Seggin noticed my spearmanship seemed more aggressive today.

Speaking of mood, I dislike losing my composure, but honestly, you would think those three would know better, especially after my talk with them! How could they let Link get washed over the falls while they played? Thank Nayru Link was unhurt, and a guard brought him safely back. Afterward, I had words with his playmates, Bazz, Rivan, and Gaddison, and I hope my message sank in.

Entry #8

A Divine Beast was excavated from Zora's Domain. This one is called Vah Ruta. The first time I laid eyes on Ruta, I was surprised by how cute it was. It's so big and round, with a long, awkward nose. According to the Sheikah who found Ruta, Divine Beasts require someone worthy to control them. It's fun to imagine someone piloting this enormous Beast in the distant past. I wonder who will have that honor next.

Entry #9

There is much more coming and going from the domain now as Sheikah scientists arrive to study Divine Beast Vah Ruta. I overheard some conversations that there is concern that a great evil called Calamity Ganon may return soon, which may be why we are seeing more monster attacks now. They say that these Divine Beasts can play a key role in Hyrule's defense when Ganon returns, so their discovery is none too soon.

I realize now that Link was not quite the innocent child I once thought. He seems to grow a bit more every time I see him, and it seems he cannot resist a dare. His friends challenged him to climb to the top of our fish sculpture, and Link lacked the good sense to decline. When I spotted him perched at the very top, my heart was in my throat! Fortunately, Link is quite a skilled climber and returned safely back to the ground. I then took him by the hand and scolded him, explaining how dangerous it was, especially should it have rained. He looked at me with his bright blue eyes and apologized, saying he would be more careful in the future. As much as I wanted to, when I looked into his adorable eyes, I could not stay upset with him. Afterward, I had harsher words than perhaps I should have with the three miscreants who urged him to undertake his perilous climb. I hope they knew I would not really feed them to Octoroks.

Entry #10

It was some time since Link's last visit, and I was shocked when I saw him. He has grown a good deal more and was wearing a Hylian army uniform. Link explained his father had perished in a monster attack. And though still young, he had enlisted in the Hylian Army, wanting to do his part for Hyrule. So, he would need to spend more time on duty and could visit here less often. I offered my sincere condolences, of course. There is so much sorrow in people's lives!

During this visit, Link seemed happy to spend more time with me than with his three friends. We took Sidon on a picnic together at Veiled Falls. We chased frogs, played tag in the water, and Link even had a mock battle with Sidon using sticks as spears. It was touching seeing Link play like that with my little brother. He was like a child himself again when he played.

Afterward, Link spoke with my father while I put Sidon to sleep. Father said they discussed events in Hyrule and thought Link a well-mannered and bright young lad, as he put it. He said it was wonderful that we were friends. I couldn't agree more! And I am glad Father approves of our friendship.

Entry #11

Link again came to visit the domain. It feels like forever since he was here last. He definitely no longer resembles the child I first met. He is now an accomplished knight and keeper of the sword that seals the darkness. I am so proud. However… he hardly speaks anymore and smiles even more rarely. He is still the kind soul I knew, but something has changed. I asked him if something had happened and if something was wrong. He merely shook his head. Perhaps it is his newly acquired height, but I feel he is ever looking past me, into the distance beyond…

Entry #12

After several months passed, Link visited once more, and I was happy he did. He was more like his old self this time.

"I'm glad you're feeling better," I said. "Last time, you barely said a word!"

"Yes, I must have been terrible company," said Link, shaking his head. "But it's the sword's fault. I was obsessed with combat training when I was last here, working to become the best I could be. But since then, I have gotten much more practice with the sword and feel more confident in my skills."

"That's good, but please don't be overconfident, either," I said.

"Trust me, I won't," laughed Link, and it was sweet to see his smile and hear him laugh again.

"Let's take a walk to the east this time," I suggested. "There is a wonderful view of Mount Lanayru and the sea from there."

We began our walk and spoke about what each of us was doing. When we neared Tal Tal Peak, Link took my hand as we ascended some rocks. Then he continued to hold it as we gazed at the view and blushed when he realized what he was doing. He looked so cute! I sense we are becoming more than just friends.

Entry #13

The princess of Hyrule paid a special visit to the domain and met with me while I was swimming with Sidon at Veiled Falls. She asked me if I would agree to pilot a Divine Beast. She told me she needs my help to face the Calamity. My heart knew at once what to do. I agreed without reservation. Calamity Ganon must not be resurrected. If he is, there is no way to ensure the safety of my people or of anyone. I do not know what will happen. All I know is that if there is anything I can do to help, I must try. I must protect Hyrule. There is also that…the Divine Beasts are meant to assist the chosen hero when he faces Ganon. In this way, I can help Link.

Entry #14

Link came to visit me. It felt like it had been ages. I told him the Lynel of Ploymus Mountain has been terrorizing everyone lately. When I said that, he started walking toward the mountain without a word. Spellbound, I followed him there. When we were almost there, he told me to turn back. He insisted he would be fine on his own. I stubbornly stayed. While I argued, the Lynel attacked us from behind! I was sure we had met our end. How silly of me to doubt. With a sure hand and a fierce gleam in his eye, Link unsheathed the sword that seals the darkness and defeated our foe. His swordsmanship was swift and graceful. I was fascinated by the beauty of his movements. Though I should have been terrified, I could not help but feel safe in the presence of my dear friend. His kindness and determination to help those in need… His strength and skill… My heart is drawn to his. I am doomed. The last beautiful move Link performed on the mountain is called a Spin Attack. Perhaps I will attempt it with my spear.

Entry #15

Father honored Link today for ridding our domain of the dreaded Lynel. There was a brief ceremony, and Link was awarded a Zora Helm crafted especially for Hylians. The helm will reside in the temple at Toto Lake when Link does not use it. That ancient temple was built long ago in honor of our special relationship with Hylians, so it is fitting Link's award should be kept there. I am so very proud of him! And Father thinks ever more highly of him as well!

After the ceremony, we played with Sidon and shared a meal. Then Link had to return to duty. I find myself longing for his visits more and more! There is no doubt I have fallen in love. I wonder if Link feels the same way? I know he cares about me, and I think it is love. If only Link was not so shy about sharing his feelings!

Entry #16

Father has finally given his blessing for me to pilot the Divine Beast. The threat of the Calamity can no longer be ignored. Father said the Zora must play their part. He seemed on the brink of tears when he made me promise to return unharmed. My eyes burned with tears as well, so I simply nodded. Seggin could hardly look at me. Muzu left partway through. I feel awful for putting them through this, but I must do what I can to help Link. I could never forgive myself otherwise. Speaking of Link… I have at last finished gathering the materials for the armor. I shall start making it at once.

Entry #17

Today was the inauguration ceremony at Hyrule Castle. It was an honor to take part. However… Honestly, I do not remember much about it, but only because something unforgettable happened afterward. I experienced something wondrous, a beautiful moment in time I shall treasure forever. I am grateful to the princess for agreeing to my request and to Daruk for…um… well, for bringing me closer to Link. Oh… I did hear something that shocked me enough to almost overshadow that happy moment. Link has been chosen to guard the princess wherever she goes. They shall… be spending much time together…

Entry #18

Link surprised me with a visit today. He arrived in the afternoon at East Reservoir Lake just as I was swimming back from a training session with Vah Ruta.

"This is a delightful surprise!" I said. "How did you find me?"

"I asked one of the guards," said Link. "He said you spend all your free time training with Ruta. Are you working too hard?"

"I want to be sure Ruta and I are ready to aid you when the time comes," I said. "And look who's talking about working too hard."

"Well, who can blame me? And any help I can get will be most welcome," laughed Link. "Anyway, I hope you're well, Mipha."

"I'm fine and thrilled you're here."

As we spoke and I looked at him, I couldn't help but notice that Link had his share of bruises needing attention. He knew from my expression how seeing his injuries made me feel, and he answered my unspoken remark.

"I know, I know," said Link, shaking his head as we both sat down on the edge of the bed on the northwest pier, and I began to heal him. "I need to be less reckless. But honestly, it's not entirely my fault. Monsters are everywhere these days and are more aggressive. Anyway, I can always count on you to make things right for me."

"I hope you don't visit me just to have your injuries healed?" I teased as I healed one bruise and moved on to another.

"No, no, Mipha, of course not, I like to see …" said Link. Then he saw me smiling at him, realized I was teasing, and laughed.

"Anyway, I'm happy you came to visit," I said as I held his arm until his wound was healed, then gently released it. "I'm surprised the Princess gave you any time off."

I admit I was jealous of Link's time with Princess Zelda and feared they would grow closer.

"Are you kidding?" laughed Link. "She still treats me like I'm a nuisance and wishes her father had never assigned me to guard her. But she told me she planned to stay at the castle for three days, so I could go where I wanted."

"And you wanted to come here?" I said.

"Of course, where else? You're here," said Link, and we smiled at each other.

I must say that Link has only grown more handsome with time. And his voice has changed too. It's deeper and more melodic - on those occasions, he chooses to speak, of course. He's still much too quiet!

"Thank you!" said Link with a smile as he examined where the last wound had been. "You're incredible!"

We looked into each other's eyes for a moment, and I felt myself feeling flush. Link is handsome and a kind, caring person, yet a fearless warrior. He would risk his life for anyone. I wish he would speak more openly about himself and his feelings. Maybe over time, I can gently urge him to do so.

"What should we do now?" Link asked, interrupting my thoughts.

A few ideas flowed through my mind, like taking him in my arms and kissing him. But when I get flustered, I usually dive back into my favorite activity - swimming.

"Oh! Why don't we swim together here at the lake?" I said. "It'll be fun!"

Stupid me - I wasn't thinking! Or was it my subconscious thinking? Now Link would need to undress!

"Great idea! I love seeing how gracefully you swim," Link laughed as he pulled off his shirt and trousers.

I didn't want to stare — honestly, I really didn't — but I couldn't help it! Link is so cute! He has a slim, athletic build, gorgeous blue eyes, and perfect features. I don't even mind his hair, which undoubtedly hurts his swimming because it looks so soft and frames his face perfectly. I had to dive into the water to cool off and hide that I was blushing. Then I waited for Link to join me for some swimming.

Entry #19

I finally completed that special armor for Link. I am confident it will fit him perfectly. He is coming to the domain soon. I hope to give him my gift when I see him, but… should I really go through with it? According to the old legend, long ago, a Zora princess fell in love with a Hylian swordsman. Perhaps there is hope. This will be a rare occasion that Link is not accompanying the princess. We should have some time to ourselves. Oh, I have an idea! At sunset, I shall ride upon Ruta with Link. Zora princess of the past…please lend me your courage!

Entry #20

My training with Ruta has gone better than I expected. We have spiritually bonded now, and it feels incredible! I have learned how to coordinate my thoughts and movements in the way Ruta expects and understands. Now she feels less like a machine to me and more like a friend, and I think we are as well prepared as we can be for the eventual return of Calamity Ganon.

Speaking of Ruta, my plan for a sunset ride upon it with Link was only partly successful. Link and I shared some moments alone on Ruta's trunk, where I reminisced, healed a wound on his forearm, and promised to protect him. But in the end, I did not feel comfortable offering Link the armor.

Link was clearly too tired and so preoccupied with his duties that he hardly said a word the whole time we were there. I need Link to give me his full attention for so serious a proposal, and it was clear I did not have it today. So I walked him back to the Seabed Inn for the night.

However, all hope is not lost. Link has agreed to meet me tomorrow morning before returning to duty, and I will give things one more try. At least Link should be better rested after a night at the inn. But I am so nervous that I don't know if I will sleep at all!

Entry 21

Link and I are to marry! My heart is bursting with joy!

I know I must write about such an important event in my diary, but I am so excited that my hands are still trembling. I hope what I write will be legible!

Link met me as agreed after breakfast this morning, and I walked with him to Veiled Falls, carrying the armor I had made in a bundle. I had hoped that Link would be fully rested, but he said he has not been sleeping well from all the stress of guarding the princess and the increased monster activity. Oh, well, I thought. But I refused to let that deter me.

When we reached Veiled Falls, we sat on the rock in the pool of water together. As usual, Link was quiet. But the combination of the sun reflecting off the water and the melodic sound of the waterfall lulled him to sleep. I gently rested his head in my lap to make him more comfortable, and he looked so at peace as I brushed away some hair from his face. His breathing was calm, and his chest gently rose and fell. I was happy he was finally resting, as Link has had so many burdens to bear. But I wondered what to say when he awoke and went over different ideas in my mind. Then too, I had to prepare myself for a bitter disappointment should Link not feel the love I did. But I knew I might not have another chance to be alone with him for some time, and I was determined not to let this opportunity float away.

But to my surprise and delight, which I will never forget, when Link awoke, our eyes met, I smiled, and then he suddenly reached out and pulled me close for a kiss! My heart nearly burst with joy, and at first, I feared I was the one dreaming! Then, amidst many more kisses, we expressed our love for each other, a love we both felt but had feared to express. Of course, I offered Link the armor then and there, and he gladly accepted, unwrapping it from the bundle and holding it up to see. We kissed several more times, but then Link needed to leave.

We decided it was best to keep our pledge of love a secret until our work defending Hyrule was over. We both felt it could complicate our relationship with Zelda and the rest of the Champions at a time we could not afford any distractions. So, after Link left, I stored the armor safely back in the domain until my fiancé could wear it openly and forever. Before sleeping, I said a prayer of gratitude to Nayru for fulfilling my heart's desire. Then I couldn't sleep anyway!

Entry #22

Both Father and Sidon could not help but notice my mood change. But I kept my promise to Link and put off explaining, though I think Father may well have suspected. I spent most of my free time training with Ruta and reviewing what I must do when Calamity Ganon eventually attacks.

After a week passed, Link surprised me with an unexpected visit. I was training with Ruta at East Reservoir Lake when I noticed him standing on the northwest pier. I waved and swam over to him at once.

There was something odd about Link this time, though, and I am not sure why. He almost seemed like a different person. Link was very emotional at first, even sobbing over how much he missed me after only a week apart. That was sweet and nice to hear, of course! But to my surprise, he did not take me in his arms and kiss me but needed my urging to do so. Strange!

Whatever the reason for Link's odd behavior, I enjoyed our unexpected day together. We swam, talked, and, best of all, slept overnight in each other's arms on the bed at East Reservoir Lake. I cannot wait to spend every night in his arms!

Link needed to return to duty the next day, so we said our farewells. But we will see each other again soon when all of us meet the princess at East Lanayru Gate. She is making a pilgrimage to the Spring of Wisdom, and I pray Nayru will guide her to attain her sealing power. If not, perhaps I can suggest that what works for my healing power might also be the key to unlocking hers. I hope we can fulfill our mission when the time comes. Then Link and I can finally marry and start our lives together. I love him so very much! My heart is forever his!

"That's the last page," said King Dorephan. "I know she would not have had time to record anything further in her diary on the day of Ganon's attack."

Astra and Sidon were both quiet as King Dorephan wiped his eyes.

"Forgive me," said King Dorephan after a moment. "This brought it all back for me. But, Sidon, you were still too small to remember much back then."

"It is late, Father," said Sidon. "Perhaps we should all rest for the night."

"Yes, good idea," said King Dorephan.

"I will use the Sheikah Slate to return to Hyrule Castle now," said Astra. "Thank you for sharing Mipha's diary with me and, as always, for making me feel so welcome here. I wish my father could have seen these pages. Though, come to think of it, perhaps he has by now since her diary would be intact in the other timeline. But in any case, he has something much better - a chance to live with the one he loves. Until we meet again."

"Until then," said King Dorephan and Sidon as Astra took out the Sheikah Slate and departed.
