As Lenny started to come to consciousness, he automatically reached over for Midge, even though some part of him knew she wasn't there. They'd spent most of their married life sleeping in different beds, fuck, different states, but in the times they were together, he'd grown used to it. As he was reaching, he felt the bedding and realized that this wasn't the motel he'd been living in for the last few months, and that woke him up enough to remember he was back in New York and Midge was supposed to be with him.
He opened his eyes and saw two sets of tiny eyes staring at him, "Fuck!"
He regretted cursing as soon as the words left his mouth, then again, with Midge as their mother, they'd probably heard that and much worse, often. He sat up and rubbed his eyes before remembering he was completely naked under the sheets that were falling off of him, so he quickly pulled them up to his waist. "Good morning."
"Hi, Lenny!"
"Good morning," Esther said with much less enthusiasm than her brother.
"Uh, what are you guys doing in here?"
"Watching you sleep."
"I was looking for Ethan."
"Huh, okay," was the only response he could think of, "Where's your mother?"
"She went to work."
"Work?" Oh, right, she was doing the voice acting. Didn't they have plans today? Was he supposed to stay here and hang out with her ex-in-laws all day? No fucking way.
"Yeah, but she saved you breakfast and left you a note."
"She did, did she?"
"Mhmm," Esther said, pointing to a note on the nightstand.
Lenny snatched it up and quickly read it over. She'd be working in the city until noon, and she wanted him to meet her at the Stage Deli so they could go right into their apartment hunt. Huh, he hadn't been there in ages, since he was first starting out and scrounging for shows, he wondered if Verna still worked there. He picked up his wristwatch that was on the nightstand and saw that it was almost 9 am, fuck, he was never up so early, it was probably the eyes on him that woke him up. He flicked his eyes to Ethan; he'd have to keep an eye on that one.
"Did you two eat yet?"
"No, Grandma Shirly was playing Majong with Eithan, and she always loses track of time when that happens."
"Right then. Uh, why don't you two head downstairs, and I'll join you in a few minutes after I get dressed."
"Okay!" They both said, perking up. It seemed they were excited to get to know him; he couldn't deny it was a shared sentiment.
When the two ran out of the room, thankfully shutting the door behind them, Lenny flopped back down on the bed and ran his hands over his face. This was not how he expected his first day back in New York to go, his first day back with Midge. From context clues, he learned her family was very important to her; he guessed he didn't really take the time to think about what that'd mean for him. He liked them all well enough, but unless he was working or in the mood to go out, he was more of a solitary person. Having this many people around him all the time was a lot, especially these specific people. Fuck, even having one around him at a time would be a lot. He shook his head and told himself to stop complaining; they were the decent type, and it'd be worth a lot worse just to keep Midge in his life.
So he sighed and lit a cigarette before getting up, digging through his suitcase, and finding something to wear today. He wanted to look good; he already had a feeling having his name attached to an apartment application would make it much harder to get approved. He didn't want to make Midge's life any harder just because she was married to him, plus, the sooner they got out of there and got a place of their own, the better.
He'd just stubbed his smoke out and gave himself one more look in the mirror when he heard the front door open, and someone yelled, "Hey, Ma!"
Lenny cringed. He had no idea what was about to happen, but he had a feeling it wasn't going to be anything good. He stood there at the closed door, his hand halfway reaching for the doorknob, wondering what to do. He wasn't a wimp or a coward; he wasn't going to hide up in the room until Midge's ex-husband left, but he also knew that Midge was very worried about this meeting, so that meant it was probably going to get heated, plus he figured she'd have wanted to be here. He flicked his eyes to the window but shook his head, he was on the second floor, that wouldn't work, with his luck, he'd end up in the hospital.
Lenny heard the panic in Shirley's voice when she replied, "Joely, what are you doing here?"
That was right; she didn't want her son to know that she liked and approved of him, or at least of Midge's new husband. "I figured Midge would be working, so I thought I'd come by and see if the kids wanted to spend the day with their dad."
"No!" They both yelled at the same time, and Lenny chuckled.
"Jeez, way to hurt a man's feelings. Why not? What's going on around here that's so good you don't want to go to the park with your old man?"
"We want to hang out with our new dad!" Eithan said, and Lenny's laugh turned into a cringe. "Ow! What was that for?"
Esther answered, "Mama told you, Daddy is still our dad, we just have two now!"
"I know! So that means we have a new dad and an old dad. We want to see new dad, right Esther?"
"Hey, you two, your mother made it very clear that he was your stepfather, this is your one and only dad."
"I still don't see the difference," Ethan said, and Lenny was sure he could hear the shrug in his tone.
"Yeah, me either, but it sure seemed like a pretty important difference." Esther counseled sagely.
"Ma, what the hell are they talking about?"
"Huh? I'm not sure."
"Silly grandma, you know mommy's new husband."
"Stop lying to the boy, Shirly." Moishe said, joining the conversation, "I'm sorry, son, to be the one that's telling you this, but you know Midge is staying with us until she finds an apartment of her own, who were we to say no when he made it to town? They're married."
"Wait, what? You're saying this guy is staying here? As in right now?"
"Oh yes, it's been a treat," Shirley said.
"Who is this guy? Ma, what the fuck? How do you know he's not like a killer or anything?"
"Don't talk to your mother that way!"
Lenny looked out the window and reconsidered sneaking out. He hadn't had to do that since he was a boy living at his aunt's farm, but the emasculation might be worth it to avoid this whole situation. Midge certainly owed him after all this.
"Sorry," the ex said, not sounding sorry at all, "This is just a lot to take in. So he's here right now? Where is he then? He's already met the kids? Midge knows I'm not okay with that."
"Lenny said he'll have breakfast with us soon he just has to get dressed," Ethan helpfully chimed in. Alright, it seemed like running away like a wuss was no longer an option, probably for the best, Lenny decided.
"L-lenny? That's his name?"
"Yes!" The kids helpfully chirped.
"Fuck. Ma, please tell me it's not who I think it is."
"Wait, you're telling me you know Midge was close to Lenny Bruce, and you didn't tell your own mother? What kind of son are you? You know how much we like him!"
"Fuck. So you're telling me Lenny Bruce is upstairs right now, and- and he's Midge's new husband? This can't be happening."
"It was so nice meeting him, he's such an interesting person,"
"I convinced myself when I saw them in Las Vegas that they were just two people in the same business."
"So nice, too, and completely smitten with Midge," Shirly kept saying.
"I knew she had someone in her room that night, and I saw him leaving early but told myself he just found a groupie."
"I'm so happy for her; she deserves to be happy after what you did to her." Lenny was sure at this point mother and son weren't even listening to each other, much less having the same conversation.
"Fuck, how could she do this to me, Ma?"
"Do what to you, sweety?"
"She knows how much I look up to him! How much I wanted to be like him in comedy. Fuck, I took her to see him on our first date."
Huh, now that was a juicy piece of information Lenny couldn't wait to bring up to Midge. He stood up a little straighter. All of a sudden, he didn't think the situation was going to be too uncomfortable for him, he might even be able to have a little fun with it.
"Joel, I taught you better than that, how is that a romantic first date?" His mom chided.
"Well, it worked, didn't it?"
"Yeah, until you couldn't keep it in your pants and screwed the whole thing up," Moiche answered.
"Keep what in daddy's pants?"
Lenny chuckled while the adults downstairs got awkwardly quiet before stumbling over their words. Lenny checked his watch and realized he'd have to leave soon if he wanted to meet Midge on time, and he did promise to eat with the kids, so there was no time left to procrastinate. Plus, he'd rather just get this conversation over with. So, with one more look in the mirror, he opened the door and started his way downstairs.
The kids were the first to notice him; the adults were all huddled in a small circle, yelling at each other in a whisper. He thought they were trying to be quiet he was sure he had heard his name a few times. The kids yelled his name and ran up to him, wrapping their small arms around his legs, he patted the top of their heads without anything better to do, he wasn't used to people taking to him this easily when it wasn't in a club setting, much less kids so he was a little thrown off kilter.
"Lenny, you're up! Come, sit, sit, I gave Zelda the morning off and made breakfast myself, I couldn't resist after how much you liked my cooking last night." Shirly said as soon as she noticed him.
"Thanks, Shirley. I'm not normally a breakfast person," Or morning person, "but I promised the kids, and it smells delicious."
Both the kids took Lenny's hands and led him to what he assumed was the kid's table, he followed without complaint but was still confused about what he did to make them like him so much. He made eye contact with Joel, at least he was pretty sure that was the man's name, and nodded at him once as he passed him. He had to force himself not to laugh because the man was gaping at him like a fish, his eyes wide, his jaw resting on his neck.
Shirly served him, and he nodded gratefully, the kid's plates were right behind his. He grabbed his fork to take his first bite, but Joel took the seat next to him and sat down, looking right at Lenny but not saying anything. Lenny extended two fingers and put them to his forehead before soluting him, "Morning."
Lenny put his attention back to eating; it seemed like Joel was a mix between star-struck and in shock that his ex-wife's new husband was staying in his childhood home, he understood that last one, he'd be fucked up if he went to visit his mother and Honey's new man was sleeping in his childhood bed.
Joel shook his head, getting a hold of himself, he had no idea how to start this conversation; his first inclination was to be aggressive, to interrogate Midge's new husband, to let him know in no uncertain terms that his kids were his top priority and no one was going to hurt them, and if he dared hurt Midge as Joel himself did, he wasn't above getting sent to prison to prove a point. But this was Lenny Bruce. Lenny fucking Bruce, his comedy idol, the man who made him first want to get into standup. Fuck, he was pretty sure he had every record Lenny had ever released, and he seen him live whenever he had the chance. He even tried taking one of Lenny's sets for his own, just like he'd done with Bob Newhart, but could never get the tone and timing right and got booed off stage the one time he tried. No, Joel, you're not looking at Lenny Bruce, the stand-up comic, you're looking at Lenny, Midge's new man. You can't get what he does for a living or who he is throw you off your game; you still have to make your point, these are your kids and your wife you're talking about… uh, ex-wife. "Mr. Bruce, it's good to meet you. I'm Joel Maisel, and I've been a huge fan for a long time now."
Lenny nodded but didn't reply, instead, he focused his attention on Eithan, who was talking a mile a minute about his favorite TV shows, apparently, he couldn't decide his favorite, it was between Howdy Doody and The Adventures of Superman. "I'm partial to Superman. He's the best superhero, in my opinion."
"You read comics?!"
"I've been known to pick up a spare comic now and again," he leaned in, "I was a big fan when I was a kid. Superman didn't come out till I was a little older than you, but I'm pretty sure I got some of the first ones that came out packed away at my mother's house somewhere."
"Woah! Can I see them sometime?"
Lenny shrugged, "Sure, why not? I'll get Kit to bring them with her when she comes."
"Whose Kit?" Joel asked, but the kids spoke over him.
"Is she coming soon?" Lenny was pretty sure the only reason Eithan cared was because he wanted those comics.
"I can't wait to meet her!" The question was probably the most emotion Lenny had seen Esther make yet.
"She's excited to meet you, too," Lenny said with a quirk of his lips.
Joel was trying to stay calm and not handle this like the jealous ex, but it really wasn't easy, and Lenny paying more attention to the kids than him was making it even harder. Perhaps after he left and he had some time to cool down, he'd realize that Lenny caring for the kids was a good thing, but not right this moment, "I asked who the hell Kit is?!"
Everyone in the room quieted down; his parents gave him disapproving looks that he ignored, and his kids looked at him with wide eyes, maybe even a little frightened, which calmed him down a little. Lenny, on the other hand, was looking at him incredulously, with a little bit of anger deep in his eyes that Joel could tell he was working hard not to show. Lenny put his fork down and stood up, flicking his eyes to the front door and then the kids. "Maybe it'd be best for us to talk alone."
"Yeah," Joel said, clearing his throat.
As they were walking towards the front door, Lenny wondered for the first time where Abe and Rose were. That thought also made him look at the clock, he had to leave to meet Midge soon, and he couldn't wait, he liked the people in this house well enough, and he was willing to do what he had to to keep his wife happy, but the place was a little crowded for his liking. When he shut the front door, it was as if he shut away all the sound with it. It was deathly quiet for a few long moments as the two men looked at each other.
Lenny looked down at his hand for a second too long before giving Joel a tight smile. "Joel, right? Heard a lot about you."
Joel crossed his arms, trying to stay calm. "Good things, I hope."
Lenny smirked, shrugging as he tilted his head. "Well, the first thing that comes to mind is, 'My husband's girlfriend barged into my work and accused me of stealing her man.'" He gave Joel a pointed look.
Joel flushed, but tried to keep his composure. "Yeah, I, uh, saw that one, too. I was there that night."
Lenny chuckled, the sound almost too casual. "That explains why she disappeared before my closer."
Joel stiffened. "So you wanted her back then, huh? How long has this been going on?"
Lenny's eyes narrowed. He could throw out a joke, deflect it with sarcasm, but something about Joel's tone irked him. "Not sure that's your business. Especially since we didn't meet until, oh—right after you left her for your secretary."
"That's not the point. That night, we were still—"
Lenny cut him off, his voice low but firm. "There was no overlap. Don't rewrite history just because it's convenient."
Joel took a step closer, trying to stand taller. "And how do you know that? You think you really know her? Think she tells you everything?" His voice lowered, more biting. "You don't know her, man. Midge, she holds back. It was part of the problem."
Lenny stared at him for a moment, then laughed softly, shaking his head. "Don't do that."
Joel frowned. "Do what?"
"Try to blame your wandering dick on her."
Joel's temper flared. "Hey, you don't know what it was like!"
"And I don't care either." Lenny's voice sharpened, cutting Joel off. "I know enough. I know what you did to fuck her up, and I know the insecurities she's got now because of you. And guess what? None of it's my problem. I'm here for her, not for you."
Joel's jaw clenched. "I'd argue it is your problem. Those are my kids in there, and if I'm not happy, I can make your life and Midge's life a living hell when it comes to them."
Lenny's face broke into a slow grin, a dangerous twinkle in his eyes. "Oh, I get it now."
Joel blinked, suspicious. "Get what?"
Lenny checked his watch nonchalantly. "You're feeling threatened, aren't you? Maybe even a little jealous? Don't worry, Joel, Midge loves you, in the same way you love... your old record collection. It's nostalgic, but it's collecting dust, and frankly, you haven't touched it in years."
Joel bristled, but Lenny shrugged again, glancing toward the door. "Are we done here? I promised the kids breakfast, and you're making me run late. I gotta meet Midge in—" he checked his watch again— "fifteen minutes. So unless you want to continue this post-breakfast, I suggest you get on with your point."
Joel's mouth tightened. "I said, those are my kids. I can eat breakfast with them."
Lenny raised an eyebrow, unconcerned. "Sure, you can. But I promised, and unlike some people, I keep mine."
He turned, leaving the door open for Joel to follow. Joel fumed as Lenny casually strolled back inside, tossing a quick "Feel free to join, if you can manage it without causing another scene in front of them," over his shoulder.
Yeah, Lenny needed to get the fuck out of there and fast. Hopefully, Midge wasn't as picky with places to live as she was with clothes, shoes, makeup, and, god forbid, hats. He rolled his eyes; he was fucked.
He breathed a sigh of relief when he closed the door to the cab. The rest of breakfast was just as tense as the conversation out front was because, of course, Joel decided to join them. The good news was that the kids seemed to have a good time, and they liked him, too, which was still fucking surprising to him. He worked hard not to let his annoyance and anger show in front of the kids, even though their father really brought him down to his last straw of patience.
He handed the cab driver the fair and made his way into the deli, Midge and Susie were sitting there sitting next to what looked like two huge boxes of women's feminine products. He ignored the few tables where the people stopped eating to look at him. If he was going to get recognized anywhere and be treated like a star, it'd be here; it was why he stopped coming here in the first place. If he had to listen to one more stand-up comic tell him a joke and ask for his opinion, he'd go insane, or more insane than he already felt he was most of the time, anyway.
He sat down next to Midge without any fanfare. He wanted to kiss her hello, but they still hadn't come out to the public, and there were already enough rumors about them going back to almost when they first met. Plus, comics were probably the most gossip-hungry vultures he knew, even if he didn't touch her once, he knew for a fact that this meeting would get around by the end of the week, being wildly speculated on by almost everyone he knew.
Still, though, he rested his arm behind her head on the back of the booth and smirked at her, "Morning."
"Good morning," She smiled back with a hint of promise.
"Ew, blegh!"
Midge turned to Susie, "What, is there something wrong with your meal?"
"No, it's fucking perfect, like always. It's you two that are gross."
"What? We just greeted each other."
"Midge, I can smell the pheromones from here, you're practically panting at each other."
"Well, good morning to you too, Susie."
"Fuck you very much," Susie replied, flipping Lenny the finger.
Lenny chuckled, "How much you've grown. Don't think I don't remember how you were the first night we met. You practically fainted when you lit my cigarette."
"Did not!" She yelled, Lenny swore he saw her cheeks blushing up.
"Yes, you did!" Midge laughed, remembering. Susie moved her hand to flip Midge off instead, making Midge laugh harder, she pointed the two large boxes at Susie's foot, "Okay, do you have that under control? We have to get going"
"Yeah, yeah, I've got it. I'll make money off it if it's the last thing I do."
"I know you will," Midge said fondly, "I'll see you tomorrow for our next commercial?"
"No, you'll see me tonight, you've got a gig."
"I do?" She asked, digging through her purse, pulling out her calendar, and flipping through it, "I don't have it written down."
"It's just at the Gaslight; we've gotta keep you fresh, we have no idea how long this break is going to last. Ha, exhaustion, I still don't get it, the man doesn't even tie his own shoes, how is he exhausted?"
"I don't know, the stress of stardom, I guess," Midge said, but she had a look in her eye like she knew something more.
"Lenny, are you looking for any gigs?"
"Susie, stop!"
"I've already got a manager, thanks though," He laughed.
"No, I just mean, if you wanted a spot at the Gaslight, I'm sure we could make room for you."
"Always working, this one," Midge joked, looking at Lenny somewhat apologetically while pointing at Susie.
"We've already had this conversation, remember? The dangers of telling someone their drug dealer is waiting outside."
Midge looked back and forth between the two, confused, while Susie held her hands up in surrender, "Fine, fine, just thought I'd offer."
"Thanks for thinking of me, but apparently, Joe got me booked solid for the next month."
"Really? That's great, Lenny!" Midge said as she leaned forward to kiss him but stopped herself at the last moment as she looked around and remembered where they were.
Lenny shrugged as he took a drag of his cigarette. He'd been getting in his own head lately, and he worried that he wouldn't be as funny now that he didn't have the drugs to rely on; he knew he was probably just being dumb, but he wouldn't feel better until he got back on stage and the crowd laughed as much as normal. He couldn't remember the last time he performed sober, when he got out of the Navy, he was already prescribed a myriad of drugs, including both amphetamines and morphine, so he'd been using since before he ever stepped on stage, it was intimidating.
He pushed that thought away; there was no point worrying about it now, he'd just drive himself crazy. He looked at Midge, "Ready to go, sweetheart?"
She looked at her wristwatch, and her eyes opened wide, "Fuck, we're already late for the first showing! We have to go now."
"I swear, one night, I'm going to sneak into that house and turn every single watch back a half hour. That way, she'll always think she's late but will actually arrive on time," Susie grumbled.
Lenny laughed, "Let me know when you plan to do it, and we'll coordinate an attack from both sides"
Midge slapped Lenny's arm and huffed but couldn't say anything because they were right, she was terrible with time. Lenny stood up to leave, Midge following suit, but he wasn't able to get out of the booth, a man was standing there clearing his throat. Lenny turned his head to see who was blocking him. He looked somewhat familiar, but he couldn't place him. Context clues led him to believe this was a comic he'd seen at one gig or another over the years.
He quirked his eyebrow at the man, pointedly looking down at his legs, which were stopping Lenny from moving. "Yes?"
"Oh shit, I'm sorry," The man said and quickly took a step to the side, making room for them to stand, "Mr. Bruce, it's been a while, how are you doing?"
"Frank, what the hell are you doing? You look like you're about to be sick," Midge asked, confused. Frank shot her a dirty look but quickly turned his attention to Lenny, holding his hand out to shake.
Lenny looked down at his hand for a moment too long before taking it, "Lenny, please,…."
Midge spoke up simultaneously, "Mr. Bruce is his mother."
Lenny looked at Midge with a smirk, "Stealing my jokes now, Upper West Side?"
"It's not my fault you recycle old material."
"Old? The first time I ever said it was in Miami!"
"Yeah, well, I heard it before, so old."
"Christ, there's no impressing you, is there?" Lenny leaned in just slightly, eyes gleaming with amusement. "You know, I'm starting to think you only keep me around to knock me down a peg."
Midge crossed her arms, eyebrow raised. "Please, if I wanted to knock you down a peg, I'd write your material."
Lenny gasped in mock offense. "Oh, is that so? And what would you even write? Maybe a bit about how I'm already washed up?"
"Oh no," Midge quipped, her smile devilish. "Something classier, like how a certain Mr. Bruce has to borrow punchlines from my act now."
Lenny shook his head, chuckling. "You're ruthless, Maisel."
Midge shrugged, pretending nonchalance. "It's part of the charm. Keeps you on your toes."
Lenny opened his mouth to continue but Susie's loud groan broke them from their own little world, "Does that ever get tiring?"
"What?"
"The nonstop witty banter. I'm getting tired just hearing it!"
Midge looked at Lenny and smiled slightly as she shrugged, "I don't even realize we're doing it."
"I mean, I'm sure your conversations are a lot more interesting than they were with Joel, but there must be a line."
"Speaking of, guess who I had the pleasure of meeting."
"No!" Midge said, not wanting to believe him.
"Fuck Midge, you promised I'd get to be there when he met Lenny!" Susie complained.
"I wasn't even there. Don't get mad at me," Midge defended herself.
Lenny laughed, "It's not like you should be all that surprised considering where I was staying."Frank cleared his throat, and Lenny jumped a little, completely forgetting he was there and running over his words, trying to figure out how much of their relationship they gave away. "Oh, right. What can I do for you?"
"Oh, I just wanted to say it was nice to see that you're back in town, it was getting a little dull here without you. I uh also wanted to let you know a bunch of us comics are meeting up this Wednesday at Upstairs at the Downstairs, and we wanted to give you an invitation. You recently got divorced, right? It might be fun to get back out there. We'll show you a good time."
Midge was a mix between entertained and pissed, entertained because she'd never seen Frank look or sound so nervous, and it was funny. She was pissed because of this fucking boys club of a profession, she'd known them for years now, and she was never invited to anything like that, not like she'd go, but it'd be nice to get the invitation.
"Yeah, I'll tell you what, Frank, it's Frank, right? I can't make it, as I was just telling these two, my schedule is full up the next month, but we'll do it another time, I'm sure I'll see you around town now that I'm back." He turned to Midge, holding his hand out in an offer to help her up, "Midge, we gotta go, we're late, remember?" He really just wanted to get out of this awkward situation. He never knew how to act around other comics, especially those that weren't as well known as he was, and he never could figure out if they liked him or if they were just trying to use him for their own gain. Midge never acted like that with him; she always treated him like he was just a normal, completely regular person, it was another thing that drew him to her in the beginning.
Midge took his hand as she stood, "God damn it, I forgot again, we probably missed the first one completely."
Lenny led Midge out of the deli, not saying another word to the two left behind. Susie watched them go, trying to stop the small smile that wanted to spread. She could tell Midge was happy, and that made her happy. She knew this could end in disaster, but she'd known for a long time that Lenny cared about Midge, it was clear as day to anyone who wanted to see. So she didn't see him purposely fucking anything up anytime soon, it was him accidentally fucking things up that worried her.
Frank scoffed, "God, she's lucky she's hot."
"What the fuck is that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing, I mean, she's funny, I know that by now, but are you really trying to tell me that if she wasn't a hot chick, he would go out of his way to hang out with her? Or shows that are beneath him just to help her? No, they're either sleeping together, or she's leading him on enough for him to think he has a shot."
"Oh fuck you, Frank. Your ego is just hurt that he left with her and didn't agree to go to your little dick party."
"Dick party?"
"Yeah, dick party, a bunch of dicks getting together and trying to find someone to fuck their dicks."
"Oh, good one." Frank said with a roll of his eyes, "If it's not cause she's hot, how do you explain the notorious loner continuously going out of his way for her."
"They're friends, plus, she helped him. First, they were both arrested and put in the same cop car; it's how they met, and she bailed him out. They just do each other favors, that's all."
"Yeah, right, I know that look he was giving her."
"Whatever, Frank, go find someone else to annoy."
Frank scoffed and walked away, but it did leave Susie thinking. Frank was right about one thing: neither of them went out of their way to hide the looks they gave the other, they might as well be panting like dogs when they looked at each other. It wasn't as if these looks were new; they'd been happening since the first night they met, but back then, they at least tried to hide it, not anymore. Fuck, Susie had to figure out the next step, it was obviously going to get out that they got married, Lenny was a big enough name to consider his new marriage news, but she had to figure out a way to let the information out without fucking up midge's career. It's clear a lot of people think he's helped her get to where she is and that people only give her a chance because Lenny vouches for her, but that's bullshit. He helped her career out exactly one time, and that was it. Okay, so he did get her on TV in Miami too but whatever. Fuck, Midge did everything in her power to make Susie's job harder than it had to be. 'Of course, she had to go and fall in love with America's bad-boy comedian.' Susie thought with an eye roll.
